"My...? father...? What do you mean?" Phil says defensively, once more withdrawing into himself and clutching at his jacket, and looking around for Theo for protection.

You remember that it is Theo's father who is the mayor, and that the mayor only has one son, but your question seems to have shaken Phil more than a simple mistake should have.

What do you do?

Albert catches up with Norbert and Phil after tying his shoes. "Do you see Wes and Will anywhere, Norbert?" He asks, not realizing he may be interrupting.

"Do you think they took that booze to a tavern maybe? I don't know this town, but I think your idea of having a drink with the locals is a good one. We might actually get some useful new information."

Together with the others, Albert makes his way out of the Baron's compound, trying to stay out of sight of possible guards.

''Say, Christian... Do you know a place where we can spend the night if need be? I was thinking, what if the baron returns this evening. That might give us a second opportunity. Maybe some of your men can stand guard out here in the field, and warn us if he comes back. ''

"Oh, yes, of course. Good idea." Christian says when Roald suggest leaving a lookout to report on the baron's arrival. He calls out to two farmers who have not completely wandered away. "These heroes have a job for you." He tells them --you have noticed that Christian does not have a lot of authority in the resistance, and tends to make use of passing around other people's ideas and authority.

When you tell the farmers what you need they grumble a bit ("How long do we need to stay here?" being the top of the pile) but comply willingly enough --farmers are accustomed to such 'watch' jobs --especially those with sheep, Norbert will know.

"Any of the resistance would be proud to put you up for the night." Christian declares, returning to Roald's other enquiry. Implied in that is that he, too, would be proud, but you get the feeling that he --and possibly most-- would rather someone else got the duty of being thusly proud. You could choose to stay with anyone here and they will agree.

What do you do?

"Oh yeah, I meant Theo's father. You never told me about your parents. Do you know my family?" With a little embarrassment in his voice Norbert adds: "I have a lot of brothers.".

Turning to Albert he says: "Oh, um, bringing your own booze to a tavern is frowned upon in these parts. Maybe they went to one of the little shacks where the shepherds sleep to empty their loot." That last word sounds like Norbert spat out a wasp.

"But maybe its getting time to think about the night. It will get difficult to get back to the village if we loiter here much longer."

After a short silence he adds to Albert: "I must say I expected something else from adventurers than storming and sacking someones house. Do we even know who we are looking for?"

"Oh, yes. Theo's dad." Phil says, but it sounds like like he does not fully believe you. "Let me tell you a secret." Phil says, maybe as a ploy to get change the subject --from though from what, you can not be sure. "Theo's father had nothing to do with any of this. He does not know about this 'resistance' and has not been helping them... but neither does Theo... I am not sure why they think Theo is involved, but that does suggest there is a spy in the mayor's ranks."

He drops his voice even further. "He does not know that we ... that Theo... left town. Theo allowed those farmers... where have they gotten to, anyway?" You notice that the bodyguards seem to have forgotten that they were not just here to meet with their resistance buddies, and they have wandered off when the other farmers dispersed --though you still heard Gerard protesting against Helga when you left. "... They just assumed, and then Theo let them believe that the mayor was hiring them, but he paid out of his pocket-money."

"I think I have seen your bothers when they come to town." Phil answers your other question dreamily. He almost says something more but then blushes and pretends to be looking around for Theo or the missing bodyguards and is relieved when you turn to Albert.

Roald thinks for a moment.
" I think it would be best to stay with someone who is leading this resistance, that way we can easily come up with a new plan if need be.

We don't ask for much, during our adventures we slept on the ground and under the stars quite often. We also have some nice stories to tell over a meal... well not all of them are suited to talk about while having dinner, but you know what I mean..."

Roald stops talking and stares at Christian in the hope he will make the suggestion they can stay with him or Olaf.

Norbert rises his eyebrows slightly when Phil suddenly shows he knows much more than he let on at first. But Norbert is going to let it go ... for now.

"Lets catch up with Roald before he gets too far ahead."

To Albert he continues: "Maybe we can talk about it this evening. After our nerves had time to settle a bit."

Norbert whistles softly, gives the dog a long cuddle when it arrives from the bushes. The dog is friendly to everyone and keeps on wiggling its tail, but it doesn't go more than a few feet from Norbert.
Oct 15, 2022 4:40 pm
"Yes" Albert replies to Norbert. "This is not what I had hoped from our trip to see the baron, either." He looks back over his shoulder to where they just came from. "I think you're right. We'll need to do some talking to figure this whole thing out."

He follows Norbert and Phil to meet up with Roald, and see what he's up to.
Oct 15, 2022 4:55 pm
"What!" Phil says defensively at Norbert's raised eyebrow. "I was there for that part." Which only excuses the bit about the bodyguards not all the assurances about the baron or Theo.

As the group reforms around Roald, you can reassess your party. In addition to the three adventurers you still have Daryl, Theo and Phil. "Where did the protection get to?" Phil asks Theo nervously. "We don't need them anymore." Theo says dismissively, we was worried about the group before but, now that he has met the 'heroes' he seems to trust them. Phil nods and smiles in agreement. There is no mention of who the baron will feel about them abandoning their post.

Christian looks concerned about these numbers... or was it the word 'meal'. "The ... six ... of you?" He asks, counting on his fingers. "We can go to Olaf's." He decides. "Olga can cook.". He seems much happier now that that responsibility is lifted from him. "And we can wait for Olaf."
Oct 19, 2022 2:45 am
Four kids --aged between three and eight-- are playing a noisy game in the yard, but they break off to stare at the adventurers --Dylan in his shining armour being a particular point of excitement-- as you arrive at Olaf's house. Christian looks nervous as he tentatively knocks on the kitchen door, hat in hand.

Olga turns out to be a large woman, her red face smeared with the flour that coats her hands up to the elbows. "What do you want?" She demands of Christian uncharitably, glaring at the rest of the group.

"These are Olaf's friends." Christian lies. "Great adventurers and allies of The Resistance. They need food and a place to sleep tonight." He explains. "And you know I can't feed them."

She glares at him some more, it does not look like being friends of Olaf --nor aiding the Resistance-- inclines Olga towards your favour, but the need for food makes her face soften. "I suppose they better come in." She says grudgingly. "Where is that no-good husband of mine?" She demands, but does not really pay too much attention to Christian's story. "Stop gawking!" She shouts at the kids halfway though his answer about going to see his contact. "And go wash up for dinner."

The kids make their way to a pump in the yard and biggest struggles to get it moving. If any of you want to wash up as well, or just want to help with the pump, you can do so before going in.
The table is a bit crowded with all of you --a light rain has started, else Olga would have set up on the table in the yard-- and the kids are forced to share stools --unless you are brave enough to let them sit on your laps, like Dylan did-- and you are just wondering where Olaf will sit if he returns when you hear his loud voice in the yard outside:

"... wrong < swearword > baron! How could we get the wrong < swearword > baron!" He sounds angry, and Christian looks worried about what comes next.

What do you do?

Never been a big brother to anyone (and to forget some of the events of the day) Norbert joins the children at the pump and in a little play before dinner. He lets them pat the dog and invites Phil to join. He is careful not to let any rough play get out of hand. Kids get excited so quickly nowadays.

Once at the table he tries to slip some morsels of meat and bone from his own plate into his sleeve for the dog later this evening.

When he hears the angry voice outside he can't help to let slip: "You must be kidding me."
OOC:
I love this plottwist. Call me stupid, but I did not see it coming at all :)

Albert thanks Olga kindly for the hospitality. "We are very sorry to intrude like this. I will gladly help you in the kitchen if you can use an extra pair of hands." He offers as a measly recompense. "I used to own a bar, and would often make stew. I'm a pretty decent onion peeler, if I do say so myself."

He enjoys this meal even more so than the one at the mayor's house. Everything is so cozy here, and full of life. Then he also hears the yelling outside and realizes why the resistance hadn't had much success...
He exchanges glances with Roald and Norbert that clearly echo Norbert's words "You have GOT to be kidding me!"

Roald doesn't let the opportunity to wash up a little slip. He takes off some of his clothes - but keeps it decent - and enjoys the cold water. If he has a chance to splash at Norbert he will do so.
The crowded table is not his cup of tea, he eats and also thanks the lady of the house for the fine meal.
After hearing Olaf's words he chokes on a piece of bread. Coughing like a goose with a nasty cold
OOC:
yes I made that one up
He looks at Daryl for some help. His eyes wide, as if shouting ''help''
Before Daryl can react (if he even understood Roald's eyesigns) a strong thump on Roald's back sends the piece of bread flying out of his throat back into his bowl. It is one of the older kids who has clearly dealt with this kind of problem before. With tears in his eyes and a raw voice Roald thanks the lad. '' I think you just saved my life''. The exaggeration makes the boy blush.

His vision is still a bit blurry when Olaf steps into the room.

At the pump, Phil is keen to get clean again --the trip into the attic has left its mark-- but again, anyone watching might notice an abnormal amount of care over his clothes --ill-fitting and unimpressive as they are. He is also very careful not to remove his leather hat while washing his face. Phil laughs delightedly at Roald's 'assaults' on Norbert... until the clothes start coming off, when he turns away and heads quickly into the house. Theo follows.

Daryl needs a little help getting the gauntlets off his hands so he can wash up and eat, but soon there are kids running around wearing them and his helmet and wielding willow switch swords at each other till there are tears --despite Norbert's efforts.

Olga is a bit suspicious of Albert's offer at first, but grudgingly accepts and tasks him with bulking up the existing stew --and wondering if his duties extended to cleaning up after-- while she adds another loaf of bread to the oven. "It will be a bit flat." She apologises to no one in particular. "It really should rest until tomorrow morning before baking. But you young bucks have good teeth." And, indeed, the flat dense loaf is delicious if eaten while still warm before it gets hard.

The eight-year-old who 'saved Roald's life' straightens Dylan's helmet which is slipping off his head and squeezes proudly onto a shared-stool instead of climbing back onto Dylan's lap. So Dylan can finally get to eating properly, though it is still awkward as his armour restricts his range of movement.
When Olaf barges through the door --shaking rain from his beard and hair-- he looks more surprised to see his brother at his kitchen table than he does to find the rest of you strangers. But he rallies quickly enough. "It's the other baron!" He declares without any greeting. "The Clodo-one. Nixon said 'the baron', why did we all just assume it was this one instead of the one way over on the other side of the valley?" He ask, easily shifting the blame for this assumption from his shoulders alone. "Not sure what we can do about that." He says, and again the apology seems to be directed Theo's way.

"Budge up." He grunts, sweeping a gaggle of kids off a stool, plonking down tiredly, and reaching for bread, stew, and ale.

What do you do?

OOC:
adding a bit to what happened before Olaf shows up. Hope that's not too confusing :)
Albert is eager to show Olga what he can do. After spending some time on the road now, he's starting to miss a few things about his previous life as a barkeep. Then again, it has brought him good friends. Old and new.

"It's a shame we couldn't find the girl." he says to Olga while dicing some turnips. "I keep feeling like something was off. Could you by chance tell me more about her?"
Oct 25, 2022 6:08 am
- Albert -

"What girl's this, then?" Olga asks as you work. She does not appear to know anything about this, and you get the impression she may frown upon some of the ideas you guys had about what was happening.
Oct 25, 2022 5:51 pm
Roald Takes a long sip from his cup, his voice is still hoarse when he speaks: "Thank you for your hospitality Olaf, so generous of you and your family. "
Still not being sure if they should come clean about the fact that they have no clue about what's going on he decides to leave things as they are and hopes there will be some more information coming their way as they keep the conversation going.
"Indeed, quite an unfortunate mistake, when are you planning to meet with Nixon? We can come with you and work out a new approach."
Oct 25, 2022 8:14 pm
"Well, to be honest, that's what I'm trying to figure out as well. We were caught off guard with that part of the mission." Albert says, not mentioning that all the other parts were a surprise as well. "I'll have to ask Olaf himself when he gets here."
After exchanging annoyed looks with Nortbert and Roald, Albert sits still, not sure what to say next. He's relieved when Roald takes care of that.
Oct 26, 2022 7:01 am
"Maybe a good night sleep will bring a clearer view. And hopefully it will give us better idea's to approach the Baron. News of today will have reached the Baron, both of them. So I fear the same approach for the other Baron will not go so well."

Norbert looks around, almost surprised at hearing his own voice uttering these words. All eyes on him he hopes he doesn't turn red.

"I assume we don't plan on storming the gate again, hoping they don't put up too much of a fight. Maybe talking to the Baron will prove a less destructive route. Especially now we bloodied his adversaries nose."

"Well, anyway, I am off the bed." Norbert says standing up and making ready for going outside to the hay barn.
