OOC:
Yes, I agree.
"We have no healing magic, but I can help with some healing herbs." As he speaks, he gets a bundle of medicinal herbs out of his backpack, selects only a few herbs, prepares a small poultice and applies it on Lligarond's knee.
"Your knee should be much better by tomorrow morning."
After putting the bundle back.. "So, are you joining?"
Sep 26, 2022 5:42 pm
Lligarond eagerly nods agreement.
You continue into the mountains. As you get higher, and approach mid-day, the sun gets hotter. You are approaching snowfields, and the grass on the slope is muddy from trickling melt water.

"There is a pass, that way," says Lligarond. Checking your map, you see a faint line traced in what seems like a corresponding place. "We can avoid the thickest snow."
OOC:
Do you take the pass, or try to summit the snowy peak?
Sep 26, 2022 7:33 pm
Eldar decided to trust the elf, but he would prefer to hear the opinion of the rest of his friends first.
"Sounds like a good option to me,shorter and less risky than muddy slopes. What do you think?"
Sep 26, 2022 10:06 pm
Ulfheddin who had been silent for the exchange put away his axe and when the pass was indicated nodded in agreement.
Sep 26, 2022 10:24 pm
"As always - any pass - is a good place for an ambush. So we have to be careful. But this slippery snow seems even more dangerous. We don't have proper equipment for this. So good decision Eldar."

You proceed across the slope to the mouth of the pass, which is a narrow slot between two steep slopes. Both sides of the slot are coated with ice and snow. The footing is a bit slippery, gravel and ice, but manageable. It is cold around you as you pass into the shadow of the mountain.

The pass runs fairly straight. You walk for about an hour, first slightly upward then slightly downward, before the pass opens out onto the far side of the mountains. You are looking down across a wide plain or prairie; at the northern horizon you see a river glinting in the afternoon sun. To the east of the plain, rightward, are low hills. Closer to your right are the snowy slopes of the mountains. To the left, westward and northwest, the mountains continue - steeper and snowier.

Do you forage? If you do not, it would be twilight by the time you get down to the plains. If you do, you will be spending the night on the mountainside.

If current food level allow, Eldar would prefer to get to the prairie as soon as possible.

„It could be harder to find some food on those snowy mountains. I think we should press on, for the prairie ." Says Alfred breathing heavily with steam coming from his mouth because of cold air.
"What you think Ulf?"
Sep 27, 2022 7:10 am
Ulfheddin didn't respond for some time he didn't even recognize that he had been asked a question directly until it occurred to him that he was the only Wolf around. "Hmm?" He asked processing the question. "Ulfheddin no think!" He corrected and pointed to the plain below. Realizing the answer was completely unsatisfactory to the question he grumbled. "Food below." Sniffing the air several times he nodded agreement with himself. "We go food. Wary brigand!" He patted his axe with a fond smile. "We go!"

OOC:
That's settled. Good. We're going to skip Foraging and move to phase 5, Sustenance, followed by 6, Taking Courage.
The descent to the prairie is tricky but not treacherous. As the cold shadows of the western mountains turn the greenish-yellow grasses grey, you reach mostly-flat ground that is dry enough to be suitable for a camp. It will be a chilly night; there does not appear to be much firewood nearby. But you are sure that you will survive it, and the new day will bring new hope.

You make the best of your provisions, and find that there's enough left for at least another meal tomorrow. Still, it would be good to forage.
OOC:
You could Take Courage, but you've suffered no losses, so perhaps save that for another day.
The night is still, cold, calm. Distantly, wolves cry in the mountains.

Sunrise wakes you in dampness. Dew was heavy. Nearby to the east, maybe a mile away, you see a thin plume of white smoke rising as if straight out of the ground. There is a faint smell of bacon. Do you investigate?

"Uhh... what's that smell? Do you smell it too Ulfheddin?" - Alfred asked a companion who seemed to be awake for a long time now. A loud rumble came from his belly - confirming his interest in the new phenomenon.
OOC:
I wonder how the landscape looks like? Is it possible to sneak near the place where the smoke is coming from? After knowing that, I will be able to decide what Alfred wants to do.

Ulfheddin nodded and his stomach growled in response. "Sæhrímnir." He said hungrily as he sniffed at the air. Hungry and achey as he was he was itching for a fight. "We fight most like, be ready." Ulfheddin sniffed at the air trying to ascertain the direction of the bacon. Strapping his brigandine tight and winding the sling of his horn holder tight, stowing a rock in it. He double checked the straps on his axe and shield. Finally drawing the sword just about an inch out of its scabbard. Nodding he tapped his right temple. "Ready!"

As usual, Eldar checks the perimeter of their makeshift camp very early.
When he hears his friends talking about the smell, he adds "Oh the smell, and we are indeed hungry for breakfast... you are right Ulf, better to be prepared from the beginning. Let's investigate".
Sep 28, 2022 5:38 pm
In warlike array, you approach the smoke plume. It comes, with the bacon smell, from a small hole (about the size of Ulf's big hand) in the side of a small rise of the ground.

Now you faintly smell the brewing of tea. You also hear a subterranean voice, barely audible, chanting a morning orison.

"A nice, hospitable hermit or a little cannibalistic cult? Who takes the bets?" - Alfred says in hushed voice, trying to say it in different direction then the hole - in case his voice could be magnified by the little tunnel's acoustic for the other side.
"I know what my belly is voting for - that's for sure." - he adds.
"Lets sneak to the entrance that have to be on the other side of this raised ground. This time I have mixed feelings... to good to be true?"
He starts to move, crouching towards supposed entrance - if no-one stops him.
OOC:
Are there any bushes or something to hide in front of this entrance?
Sep 28, 2022 7:33 pm
Ulfheddin crafty and cunning plugs the hole in the side of the hill with a stone and some grass. He knew how to smoke a building out, this would certainly do the trick. He then followed Alfred skirting along the mound with his back to it.

Seeing what his friend done: "Perfect idea Ulf!"
OOC:
indeed it is really good!
Sep 29, 2022 5:14 pm
OOC:
Great Idea Ulf!! Hahaha
Eldar follows his companions searching for the 'entrance' on the other side. Bow and arrow at hand and prepared to attack if the need arises, and waves to Lligarond to ready himself and to follow him. Hopefully they are friendly, share some food and eventually join our ranks.

As you come around the side of the "mound," you hear a door slam open and there is a fit of coughing. A few more steps reveal a middle-aged man in a bathrobe, wheezing and leaning against the hillside next to the open door that leads into what you now recognize as a turf-house.

The man looks up at you, gasps, and snaps his fingers.

Then he's not there.
Sep 29, 2022 7:42 pm
Ulfheddin lunges at the place the old man just stood with incredible speed, attempting to capture the invisible man in a lightning fast bear hug.
