A Rainbow Runs Red

Cade's actions seem almost psychic as the door tries to blow shut, getting caught on the rug. The wind makes a weird buzzing sound passing through that door and others unseen. Almost like the low buzz of a thousand strange reed instruments.

Cade narrows her eyes, as the door tries to close. She gestures toward it, as the sound erupts. "SEE! It tried to lock us in just like in my nightmare."

"Grab something from in the room and help me block the door from closing."
She calls out to Ash.

"WOAH! You weren't wrong about this house!" Ash responds excitedly upon seeing and hearing the unnatural reaction the house appears to take as Cade stuffs the rug in the doorway. He quickly grabs the coffee table in his free hand and attempts to shove it in the breach to help keep the door open.

The coffee table moves easy enough, the sheet only getting caught under the leg for a moment. It's simple wood, but solid. At a glance it was made anywhere between 20 and 50 years ago.

The door doesn't bang like it's being shut necessarily. At least, not by an entity, so much as just the wind.

Cade looks at the temporary blockade they have set in the doorway and nods. "I don't know if it will hold while we search through this old house, but I like the idea that I can leave this room and not be stranded here forever."

She moves over to the closest and uses her truncheon to widen the gap between the partially opened doors. "Let me see if the same items are in here, as in my nightmare." She says to Ash.

One thing is immediately not present in the closet. No guitar leaps out at you.

The box on the floor is present though, with the canvas green eye watching you as you search. As you recall, the box contains 3 old pieces of mail and a few dead flies. The same number, if you bother to count.

Ash pulls his attention away from the front door and follows Cade's movement over to the closet. "Well? What did you find? Is it what you expected..like the door trying to close us in?"
Sep 16, 2022 10:52 pm
"Yes. And no." She says picking up the canvas holding it up as she turns to face Ash. "The one-eyed green monster is in here and the box with the old mail in it, but no Mickey Mouse shit."

OOC:
Heads up that you are always welcome to continue talking/exploring. The house may not always have a response to your actions.
The rain is beginning to blow in the door at this point, though on this side of the room you're largely fine. It is a bit chilly with the door open like this. Perhaps the rain is bringing a cold front with it.

Ash gives the staring eye on the canvas a side eye of his own, as he reaches into the box and examines the old mail within. He takes up the invoice and notes the selections on it. "I'd say someone was into studying spirits and learning to communicate with them."

"I agree with that observation, Ash." Cade says as she moves from the closet and flashes the beam of her maglight down the narrow hallway leading deeper into the house. "Follow me. I want to see what is in this old house and why it has tormented my dreams for so long."
Sep 20, 2022 8:16 pm
Placing the old invoice back in the box, Ash glances toward the open hallway and nods. "On it." He says, taking a tighter grip on his flashlight and hoisting the baseball bat into his other hand. He takes a deep breath and accompanies Cade into the hallway.
Sep 20, 2022 9:07 pm
The beam of the flashlight hits the edge of the hall and stops. The light illuminates the doorway just fine, and doesn't appear to be hitting a wall (physical objects will pass just fine), but for some reason the light just...stops.
Sep 21, 2022 9:42 pm
Cade notices the weird situation with the light beams. "What the fuck?!" She taps her maglight against the heel of her other hand and couple times and shines the light at the hallway again, with the same result.
Sep 22, 2022 7:33 am
Ash squints with one eye at the anomaly. "The light has to go somewhere. Since it doesn't illuminate that hallway, I can only conclude that what we see and where the light goes are two different places." He shoves the end of the bat through the threshold and pulls it back to see if causes a reaction.
Sep 23, 2022 8:27 pm
Cade holds back long enough to see if the light-absorbing hallway eats the end off the bat, then steps through.
Sep 24, 2022 2:36 am
The bat indeed doesn't react to the hallway. As you pass in, the flashlight turns off completely and switching it on or off doesn't change this fact. Feeling along the hall is easy enough to navigate, though it is "dark as the inside of a skull." This phrase bubbles up in your mind unbidden as you pass through the hall.

Emerging from the hallway is a long room, with brick columns to the right and large raised windows past them on the right wall. The windows let in light, but there is utter darkness beyond them. You can't see the storm outside; you're not even sure you can still hear it.

Forward and to the left, the room eventually fades into darkness. The floorboards near the second column look like someone started to pry them up.

Sep 24, 2022 10:12 pm
"This place is weird as fuck." Cade utters, stuffing her ineffectual maglight into her pack and slowly moving forward to the point of the second column. "No way is this room inside that house we entered. Am I right?" She listens for the sounds of the storm and her gaze falls on the loose floorboards. She crouches down and examines the spot, giving the boards a light tug to see if they are loose.
Sep 24, 2022 10:22 pm
Likewise, Ash stows away his flashlight and he looks intently at the windows. "Hard to tell, Cade." He answers her immediate question. "We didn't exactly get time to do a sweep of the exterior of the old house before the storm forced us inside." He turns to face her and see her at the floor. "But, my gut tells me NO."
Sep 24, 2022 10:27 pm
The boards are easy enough to pry up, but the hole under the floor curves away.

Listening closely you hear, tick...tick...tick...
