Ok given the pacing issues with this game I'm going to offer an interesting alternative, setting along the lines of how dark souls actually works.

You guys will all return to your original solo threads, play the games there, following your paths independently, but whenever you come across a challenging area you can put down a summoning sign, which will allow you to join other players threads as a phantom to help them overcome their challenges. That way we should be able to have each thread moving at a rate more comfortable to the players...
