The Hexcrawl

This next part of the adventure will be a hexcrawl as you try to get away from the Burning Mammoth's forces. You are represented by the banner, and them by the red token (Once you start moving you won't know where their token is).

You get 1 Travel Activity each day. It takes 1 Travel Activity to move into a hex of open terrain (the green hexes). It takes 2 activities to move into difficult terrains (the yellowish hexes that represent hills and the forests). The following can't cross large bodies of water, but they can cross rivers.

You may also Reconnoiter a hex. This will take as many Travel Activities to move into the hex. You automatically find any special feature that doesn’t require a check to find, and you attempt the appropriate checks to find hidden special features. In this chapter, there’s little actual
exploration to do—the Broken Tusks know this area well, the scouts have no reason to linger or go off course.

As it is a new map, you no longer see the full map, only the hexes around your position. You also have gained access to a couple of new exploration activities and I will repeat the old ones for easy reference in one post:

The party can attempt a delay activity only before they’ve used their hexploration activity for the day. Each delay activity requires a check. Only one character can attempt this check, though other characters can Aid as usual. Succeeding at an activity’s check temporarily slows down the Burning Mammoths, but critically failing the check only causes the Broken Tusks to waste precious time. Once the party has attempted a delay activity in a hex, they must Travel to a new hex before attempting another delay activity.

I think maybe it will be easier to keep the strategic discussion about where you want to travel in this thread. I took the executive decision to move you into this hex, as it was the only possible hex. The next one is quite obvious as well before it starts opening up a little. But you need to decide if you want to Reconnoiter, Conceal Tracks or Plant False Tracks or just move on quickly.

Reconnoiter has my vote

Edit: as it says we can use a delay activity only before choosing our exploration activity for the day, I'm taking that to mean we:

1. Choose and complete a delay activity if we choose, THEN ALSO
2. Choose a Travel Activity (such as reconnoiter or moving to a new hex)

Is that right?

If so, Koram would like to attempt to Plant False Tracks and then reconnoiter. Rolling below

Edit 2: one shy of a crit success! Can the others "Aid" to potentially push it to a crit success?

I'll allow aid after the fact. Usually the aid has to be rolled before the roll, but due to everyone being online at the same time I have no problem with aiding after seeing the roll.

As for the rout I'd suggest the bottom right hex on the map...

Nice! Great job, WhtKnt! I foresee a lot of hiding tracks in our future w/ bonuses like that.


@Furmyr A thought, going forward - for these checks, if you wanted to maintain the idea of rolling Aid checks 'before' or at the same time as the primary check: we could always roll the primary check as 'hidden', allowing people to post their aid checks after without knowing the primary result. You could reveal the rolls when you post the results of the check. Just a thought.

You spend a day to reconnoiter and finds nothing of interest. Again you must choose to Reconnoiter or not, and wether to use a delay or not. You must also choose where to go next.

Koram will almost always opt to reconnoiter. I don't like missing things lol If others feel different, please say so, but that will be my vote. If someone else wants to lead the delay roll, please do so. I am going to post a 1d20 w/ hidden results here - if nobody else wants to lead, I'll volunteer it as another Deception roll for hiding tracks. Otherwise, consider it an aid roll.

His Deception modifier is +9.
