Hello there! New player here, hoping to find like-minded people.

I've been into roleplaying games since before I can remember, unfortunately I've had very little opportunity to actually play. I have some "live" experience but mostly one-shots - DnD, CoC, VtM, I've even ran a couple of adventures of my own.

Years ago I was a part of a PbP forum game and it was awesome, but also awfully frustrating. Most of my friends have office jobs, while I've had a variety of jobs (delivery driver, production line operator, petting zoo-keeper) which mostly had me out and about; and since I couldn't be online all the time, I would often come home and find that the game has moved on without me, so I eventually quit.

I played on Tumblr for a while (5 years or so). I was extremely lucky to find someone there with whom I clicked pretty well, but unfortunately they were the exception - on the whole I don't like how games run there, the themes, the format, the etiquette, just isn't my thing.

So here I am, trying my luck in a new place. I've done, I think, just enough PbP to know I like it and I'm looking for people who are willing to make it work.

I'm specifically interested in Blades in the Dark, not necessarily the original setting (something Dishonored and/or Fallen London-themed would be nice too).

Welcome Merivel.

We generally try to set reasonable posting rates so that games don't drag too much, but also so that people don't get left way behind as you describe. It sounds like you were wanting to post about a day later and things had run away? That is not cool unless the game specifically states it requires more than one post per day. Very few games here ask for more than one post per day, so you should be fine. Most GMs will also notice that one player has been away for a lot of posts and reign things in and have people wait (the benefit of playing on a site that specialises in PbP is that we have seen those problems and learned to work around them:).
I am not sure how much luck you will have with Blades in the Dark. I have tried it a few times and still believe it could work in PbP with exactly the right group, but the likelihood of finding that group while recruiting for a game is too low for me to try it anymore. If I had an existing group of players I knew and trusted I might PbP it with them, and it is still near the top of my lists for in person or live games.

It is also unreasonably hard to disentangle Blades in the Dark from its setting. I have looked at a lot of FitD (Forged in the Dark) games and only CBR+PNK actually ended up being something I would want to play (Scum and Villainy is fine too, but there are so many other space games out there). I don't usually use pre-made settings, but Blades is the exception.

Is there anything else you are interested in trying? PbtA is Blades-adjacent and works well in PbP.

There was no rule, and that was the problem. People would get excited and start firing posts one after the other. I can't really blame them, because it happened a couple of times when I was online and I know how easy it is to get carried away. No hard feelings really, we are all still irl friends. And since it was only me who had a problem, it would have been unfair to stall the game just for me.
I beg to disagree about BitD, I do believe it can be detached from the setting, especially with ones like those I mentioned, where you basically replace one city and factions with another city and its factions. What would require more work is the magic system, but even that doesn't sound that hard, since you don't have a list of specific spells, but GM and player can work together on what effect they want to achieve. I imagine Stress can work as a mana pool of sorts.

As for PbtA, I remember looking at it at some point when I was looking for some light system for my one-shots. I don't remember what was it that I didn't like in it, why I passed it over, might be worth checking out again.

Anyway, other games I might be interested in are WoD and Cthulhu and similar investigative horror/urban fantasy/ vaguely historic stuff.

Welcome, Merivel.
Just a heads up, Tibbius had a Ghost/Echo game listed that they've been thinking of running, a very blades-adjacent system. You might want to keep an eye on that just in case.

It can be, I am just saying it is harder than most, the setting is very closely tied to the mechanics.

Agreed. I did think that those specific settings could be done with little-to-no changes except for names.

Welcome, Merivel. As the resident Vampire: the Masquerade pusher, always glad to see more non-reflections in the mirror.
