The boat is like any other designed to move cargo on a larger river. Low, wide, and filled with boxes, bundles, and people both crew and passenger. You happen to be one of the latter though the crew tend to treat you more like cargo. You have been aboard for three days now and should reach port sometime tomorrow. The captain of the boat, a rough no nonsense though fair man, has told you to rest up as the boat will pass into inhospitable waters later today. There are a couple of other adventurers onboard and are expected to take turns on watch starting tonight and throughout the morrow till you reach your destination.

The boat is manned by the captain and 4 large and burly men. One appears to be an have orc blood but doesn't talk much so you are not sure. The two other adventurers are Garic, a goblin warrior who has dream, and an ego, much larger than himself but is a easy going and likable fellow. The other is Sellene, and elf mage of some sorts. She is very private and does not seem to fit the mold of a typical adventurer but has been lumped in with Garic and yourself by captain Helgar.
The river, never small since you got on the boat, is getting wider and slower which is part of the problem. Captain Helgar says that some of the troubles come from the unusual wildlife which can be quite large, even larger than the boat according to the captain. This is only his 2nd run so he is not too familiar with all the eddies and currents of the river so has been putting in every night. However according to Helgar the river is so simple and the danger on shore greater that he does not plan to stop this night. He says the other boat captains have said this is safe as long as there is some moonlight to steer by.

Rovan wrinkles his nose at the notion of keeping watch.
So much for my beauty sleep. The thought passes like one of the clouds on the darkening sky.
"I hope you are not intending for us to become target practice for tribal bowmen, captain." Rovan stands up from his impromptu seat, adjusting the sleeves of his robe. He gives the captain a strained smile. "But if 'tis for a good cause, then I suppose we shall serve the common good of our crew.."
Even when you cheekily make us do unpaid labour.
"Any signs to look out for, then?"

That should do the trick.

Garlic gets to his feet hefting one of the two shields he carries that are nearly as big as he is. I got a bit of magic which isn't all that powerful but I'm pretty handy with keeping things distracted.
I'll focus on defending the crew of we run into any trouble.

The river at this point varies is width but has been getting steadily wider and slower with the crew spending more effort speeding it along than pushing off of rocks and steering. Now well over 50' wide at its narrowest and getting over 100' by tomorrow it takes little for ever one of the crew to keep it safe and in the main current.

Rovan notes the ungainly size of the shields for Garic with a flash of his eyebrows. Well, at least he sounds confident about it.
He smirks at Sellene and her subdued demeanor, giving her a small nod as she looks at him. Then he connects his sleeves before him, turning to the captain.
"Well, I figure someone has to take first watch. I may as well volunteer. Thank you, captain, for your tireless guidance."
Rovan distances himself from the captain, hoping to catch some of his travelling party out of the man's earshot.
"Wonderful. I'm thrilled about watching the waves for hours," he mumbles out of the side of his mouth. "Conveniently employing us for a bit of shut-eye. Hopefully he won't become too used to this."
He prepares himself for the watch of the evening, hefting chalk and powdered silver with him in his pouch.

the comment about time was in reference to a couple days ago when you started the voyage before this scene. The river was narrower and faster validated to your cogent situation. All good. Oct 29, 2022 4:29 am
Well, we should arrive tomorrow or the next day so it ain't that bad. Just don't fall asleep when in watch. The old dwarf who trained me said things like that stick with you and can ruin your reputation as a reliable adventurer. Guess I get last watch. the goblin warrior gives you an appraising look So what kind of magic do you have? Mines a family gift. Good for the little odds and ends of adventuring but not much starting power. Still it should come in handy. As he talks he snaps his fingers and a flame appears in his hands before he tosses it aloft and it vanishes.

Rovan's nose twitches.
An adventurer. Is this how I shall be remembered for posterity?
After a small delay, he smiles and spreads his hands.
"Impressive. If only my magic could light candles as effectively." He chuckles, pleased with his own joke. "Mine requires a little more preparation, but can be surprisingly useful, given time."

"Mm-well, some of my magic is aimed at less mundane threats than tribal warriors and beasts. Unless there are more supernatural forces at play, I beliƩve it is better preserved. I can, however, provide some light in this darkness."
Rovan exemplifies his words by touching a nearby mast and touching two fingers to a sun-and-moon engraved talisman, alighting it with a harmless, white flame, burning like some ghostly torch.

Grumbling about fire on boats and fool mages he returns to his rudder tossing a comment over his shoulder We'll have a fair moon t'night. No need t'light up the ship like that less something gets aboard

At first, surprise washes through Rovan at the sudden shout. He narrows his eyes at the captain, and with a flick of his hand, the white flame vanishes.
"My sincere apologies, captain. I did not mean to fray your wrought nerves. This magic is quite harmless, I assure you - though it may be frightening to some souls."
He smirks like an imp, counting on the darkness to veil his venom. It cannot completely mask the patronising tone below his honey-sweet words, however. He turns to Garic with a friendlier disposition.
"Well, I suppose you'd best make use of what sleep you can get. I'll watch the shores for now."
Rovan sets upon the task of scouting the shores with vigilance - especially since failing this task would give the captain a chance to undermine him.

give me 3 standard checks. The simplest way to do this is to tap the "Rovan Ravenhill (Tiny D6)" button at the bottom of the sheet, below the "Rolls" seconds. This will expand your character below that section. Tap on the 2d6 button on the top left of your character three times.
