Shit! We can't cut it free..by normal means anyway. What about our new friend and her magic? Bailin says as he looks over the side.
Dec 12, 2022 12:08 am
Overhearing the new development, Elwood calls over another crewman to take the helm then runs to the stern, grabbing whatever tools he can along the way. "How's the chain attached?" He asks as he approaches Darrok. "If it's locked in place maybe I can pick it. Or failing that, detach the rudder entirely."

OOC:
@callan make a craft roll to devise a way to remove the chain (difficulty +3)

OOC:
Here goes…

Rolls

Crafts to unchain

4 Positive, 0 Blank, 0 Negative - Total: +4 (+4) = +8

Dec 12, 2022 4:29 am
Elwood wraps a rope around his body and rappels down the side of Mare with Darrock and Bailin’s help. When he reaches his destination he can see that the chain is wrapped around the rudder and secured to itself with a simple lock. The other end of the chain is somewhere under the waves, probably attached to an anchor Elwood guesses. Lucky, the lock itself is an old chunky thing, exactly the type that’s simplest to pick. He makes short work of it and shouts his success back up to the deck. "We’re loose! Now let’s get out of here!"
OOC:
What a roll! It looks like we get a boost as well, though I can't immediately think of what it should be.
Dec 14, 2022 2:02 pm
The remaining sails catch the wind, enhanced by seraphine's magic. The galley furiously rows toward the Mare.
OOC:
Sailing roll against +5 to escape the galley. Seraphine grants a +1 bonus with her magic.
Dec 14, 2022 9:18 pm
Down near the waterline, Elwood observes the motion of the sea and the way the waves are breaking. While his fellow officers help to haul him back up, he notices a patch of foam being carried quickly out to sea. On the deck, Elwood hurries to the helm to get the Mare back on course.
OOC:
My boost will be "Found a Rip Current". Declaring it now because I think I may need it for this roll.

Rolls

Sail to flee (again)

1 Positive, 2 Blank, 1 Negative - Total: +0 (+4) = +4

Dec 14, 2022 9:25 pm
"We're turning to port! Set sails for a beam reach!" the shipwright turned helmsman calls out. He deftly maneuvers the whipstaff to guide the Mad Mare into the narrow current he saw from the stern.
OOC:
Yep, definitely gonna take the +2 from the boost, if that's okay.
Dec 14, 2022 10:03 pm
Seraphine pumps the sails with magical wind, but it isn't enough. The damage from the sails proves too much and the galley draws closer.

Just as it approaches artillery range, Elwood finds a rip current and steers the Mare into it. The Mare pulls away from the galley.

They pull around the island chain and are out to the open sea. The galley slows down behind them as the oarsmen tire.

They are free from the galley, and the main sail is repaired, but the Mare is running low on rations due to the extra prisoners to feed (resources track down to 1).

OOC:
Begin new scene with The Mad Mare, traveling the sea, filled with prisoners, and beginning to run low on provisions. What will the heroes do next?
Dec 16, 2022 10:51 am
"We need to put in to port and resupply, or take another ship and take their stores. What shall it be?"
Dec 16, 2022 4:22 pm
Let's keep it simple, we make for the nearest friendly port. If we happen upon a ship, then we can take their cargo and stores. Bailin tosses his idea out as the group discusses various options.
Dec 17, 2022 3:56 am
"We should let the prisoners go when we get to port."

"Honestly, do you really think that the Malicine are going to pay for their sailors? We just saw that they'd rather break a truce to try and catch you than pay for their release."

"Besides, we can't keep them locked up on this tiny ship forever and they didn't do anything to us other than try to be not-pirated. And, if you want to be practical about it, they're taking up space and eating a lot of food."

"And they look so sad...

Elwood nods. "That's right. Let them know the empire broke our deal and risked their lives but that we chose to be merciful. That might be good for our reputation, at least."

"But of course we should only release them at a major pirate hub—maybe Ragola or Magallos. Somewhere outside Malicine authority, so they can't go blabbing as soon as we make port."
Dec 23, 2022 6:45 pm
The Mare makes it back to the port of Ragola, supplies are running low, but they have enough for the journey.

While in port restocking, Marcus receives a letter from Elton, a weasly cut-throat alchemist who is known to contract out to the Malicine Empire. "I hear you are trying to make up for your past sins. Come see me - I've got a job for you. There might be an antidote to the fire that you helped create."
OOC:
Compeling Naturalist Atoning for his Sins. The client is not trustworthy, but it is a chance to make up for what he's done.
Dec 30, 2022 3:50 pm
Marcos sits in a dingy tavern, turning the letter over in his hands. He makes a decision, drinks off the last of his watery wine, stands up, and heads for the door.

Let's see what ol' Elton has to offer. Then I can take that offer to the captain of The Mare. Best way to ingratiate oneself with a pirate crew is to bring a paying job. Especially if it's one that clears my conscience even a little...

Marcos' boots hit the cobblestone streets and he heads for the specified meeting location, likely whatever back alley shop Elton has set up.
