One of the three, the short man, is bolder than the other two. He lunges forward with his sword to strike, as his comrades pause to seek an opening. He finds no gap in Ognimir's whirling halberd. Indeed, the burly Guardian sends the man stumbling back with a great gash across his naked chest. The other two, strangely, make no sound of outrage or concern. Their eyes flit from Ognimir to the other three Guardians as you burst out the cottage door, weapons to hands.
OOC:
I will refrain from any more graphic description of injuries.

Again, I will telegraph the NPC actions and roll for them, and then you should make your rolls (to find out where you stand in the order of actions) before stating your actions.
Silent, bleeding, fierce, the wounded man redirects his furious assault toward Quintus, who has just shouldered his crossbow. The other two lunge toward Ognimir as the big man's eyes reveal a briefest moment of sympathy for the wounded assailant.
OOC:
Here is what the dice tell us: Revenant 1, the badly wounded one, is about to deal 1 harm to Quintus - unless something kills him. Revenant 2, uninjured, is about to inflict 10 harm on Ognimir (yes, boxcars double the damage roll) - unless something kills her. Revenant 3, uninjured, is handsome, tall, and ineffectual. Think Zack from the Big Bang Theory, with a long sword and lusting for blood.

Rolls

Revenant 1: 5/6 wounds, armor 6 - (2d6+2)

(15) + 2 = 8

Revenant 2: 0/6 wounds, armor 6 - (2d6+1)

(66) + 1 = 13

Revenant 3: 0/6 wounds, armor 6 - (2d6+1)

(42) + 1 = 7

Damir takes a quick, deep breath as he readies his sword ...

... and he moves to strike at Revenant 2, the woman, but probably too late to be of help.

Rolls

Damir Scekic: Attack with sword - (2d6+1)

(33) + 1 = 7

Jan 20, 2023 4:13 am
OOC:
...rolling...
Danill sees what Damir is doing. He opts to move on Revenant 1, shield raised and sword thrusing.

OOC:
Ognimir has already gone, or is this a new round? I'll roll just incase.

Rolls

If new Round, Ognimir's Response - (2d6)

(16) = 7

If halbred gives advantage - (1d6)

(3) = 3

OOC:
Just waiting on @ciriaco for Quintus' roll and action. Keep in mind, the woman with the sword will slaughter Ognimir if she's not stopped by someone with a higher (faster) roll.

Oooh I see now. Is there a way for us to add to others rolls instead, to boost them up?

OOC:
... I feel like you could use your action to give Advantage (extra die) to someone else - even to someone who already has rolled. However, because I'm keying order of action off the die rolls, someone will need to roll higher than 13 in order to intercept the woman with the sword before she lays Ognimir low.

I have an idea for combat that leans hard onto Maze Rat's Danger Rolls rule rather than using roll-to-hit. I'll address that in OOC thread.

It's all happening too quickly. Quintus's instinct is to fire at the naked man charging him, to preserve his own life at any cost. However, honor whispers to Quintus that his own assailant is but one man, and wounded at that, while Ognimir stands beset by two healthy and aggressive foes.

The tip of the crossbow's bolt shifts out of line with the charging figure, trains instead on the back of the woman who seems most to threaten Quail's ally.

Trying his best to ignore the doom descending upon him, Quintus lets fly.

Rolls

Attack w/ Crossbow - (2d6)

(34) = 7

OOC:
Bloody dice.
The naked woman with the sword evades big Ognimir's halberd stroke, lunges low and thrusts.

Danill's short sword plunges into the guts of the short man threatening Quintus.

Quintus' bolt strikes and passes through the woman's left trapezius.

Damir's sword catches the woman's thigh as she darts back from Ognimir.

Ognimir staggers, drops his halberd, clutches at his solar plexus, but his hands can't stop the blood.

Three Guardians face two ... others. The woman holds a bloody blade. The taller man has a blank expression. The short man, like Ognimir, sprawls on the hard ground in the frost. The moonlight renders everything in shades of grey.

Damir does not hesitate as he pursues Ognimir's attacker with another attack. No time to think or check on friends. No time until the foes are slain. He vaguely thinks of the old hag and wonders if she has a hand in this.

Rolls

Shortsword Attack - (2d6+1)

(66) + 1 = 13

Jan 24, 2023 11:51 pm
The woman pivots to receive Damir's attack and respond with her own sword stroke.

Edit to add: She is too slow to survive. Damir's sword takes her blood, breath, and life.

The taller man moves on Quintus.

Edit to add: He is very quick, and his blade is sharp. @ciriaco, what does Quintus do?

Rolls

female Revenant: 2/6 wounds, armor 6 - (2d6+1)

(15) + 1 = 7

taller male Revenant: 0/6 wounds, armor 6 - (2d6+1)

(66) + 1 = 13

Quintus stands flabbergasted as Ognimir topples, as the bodies pile around him. He starts to scold the Guardian's murderer in a harsh, reedy voice, like a schoolmarm to a naughty child: "What-- what did you do? What did you do?!"

Then Damir has slaughtered the slaughterer, and the last of the naked warriors is bearing down on Quintus himself. Quail scrambles backwards, dropping his crossbow and fumbling to draw the dagger at his waist. He slashes in his attacker's direction, hoping somehow to drive the other man back before his blade can land.
OOC:
Alas, no. :) Unfortunately, there's no way for Quintus to beat a 13 on 2d6.

@Dunko, what of Danill?
Jan 25, 2023 3:34 am
Pulling his sword free from the short man, Danill turns and slashes at the last standing enemy, adding his blade to the other Guardians' efforts.

Rolls

Attacking Tall Man - (2d6+1)

(46) + 1 = 11

OOC:
Do Ognimir and Damir get another action? Whose turn is it? sry, just not sure
Jan 29, 2023 1:15 pm
The slaughter is finished. Damir and Danill stand. All others rest on the frozen ground, contorted as they fell. Steam rises in the moonlight from the blood that puddles in the frost.

You two who live, you hear a quiet voice. "Alas. I did not warn you well enough. The night is dangerous here." Old Belle steps toward you from her cottage, face downcast toward the fallen. "And so. This. It will not end with this. The Veil will send more. Even those who fell here, if they are not burned. I will rouse the village." She turns toward the alarm bell, some distance away among the cottages.
Jan 31, 2023 2:06 pm
Danill stands, breath steaming, limbs tired and shaken. He watches Old Belle walk off. Then he turns to Damir.

"W-what do we do?" He shrugs. "I mean, do we just burn your friends bodies? Then what? Two against the veil?!"
