Verin silently catches Lash's eye and points to the kobolds, then shrugs her shoulders as she collects her rapier from where it landed.
OOC:
OK, now the dice roller is just mocking me.

One tiny bow is no big deal. Many tiny bows might just be a problem. Seeing those, Rythorn slowly sheathes his sword and holds up both his empty hands. In a loud but not threatening voice he speaks in Draconic. "Hold! We're here to explore not to fight. We mean no harm."

The kobolds are below us on the same level as Verin and Laaesh aiming up through the stone grid. Is that right?

Lash sees Verin. Then sees the kobolds. So he quietly crawls out of the cold water.

There's some chittering in a language that you're not immediately familiar with. Whatever language they're speaking, it's clear that Rythorn's body language - if not his words - has had an effect on the kobolds below. They don't disarm themselves, but they make no further move toward you, waiting on whatever you do next.

Verin is hesitant, but she takes her eyes off the group of kobolds and starts looking around at their surroundings... mostly looking for a way up, but generally seeing what all is actually down here.

Lash, still shivering, will risk voicing a spell. He stays low to the ground and keeps his eyes on the kobolds while he casts Prestidigitation to add some warmth to his cloak.

Cualli gets in the center of his stone walkway and gets low in order to not present any target to the kobolds below. He begins crawling along the walkway and towards the center of the room. From here he plans to look around now that the ice is melted to see if he can see anything corresponding to the crystals on the wall. Maybe something on the interior of the center square?

"Perhaps they will respond better to a fellow draconic person." S'sylin offered. He held his large cudgel on his shoulder and stepped forward, giving the kobolds a clear view of his mighty dragonborn form.

"Well, do you speak my language?" he asked of the kobolds.
If that does not work, he asks the same in Giant, the ancient dominant language of the continent.
Jan 4, 2023 5:24 pm
The kobolds don't respond to the first question, but they do to the second. They respond a bit too well, really. They go from being standoff-ish to absolutely enamored with S'sylin, bowing down to him and offering him some of the food they'd been preparing, chattering away all the while. Their speech isn't quite Giantish, but it's close.

This keeps them busy enough to let Cualli examine his surroundings for more markings. There are none in the center of the square, but down below, where the others are crawling out of the water, there are markings on the walls, and they seem to be of the same sort as those on the levers above. It's hard to see if they match exactly though.
OOC:
To examine the markings in detail, it's going to take an Insight check from someone up top and a Perception check from someone below, or vice versa.
Jan 4, 2023 5:42 pm
Verin will, as silently as possible, try to get a little closer to the markings to see if she can see them any better without alerting the kobolds to her presence.

Lash understands both draconic and giant languages so he followed Sys'lin's questions. Surprised to hear them respond in giantish, sort of. He stays quiet and still and listens for anything helpful.
How is the lighting down here?

Seems like S'sylin has got the kobold situation under control for the moment, so.... Let's see here. ..

Cualli looks around at the four levers in his room double-checking the crystals. He then looks around in the room below, searching

Rythorn locks eyes with S'sylin, nods, and begins to move towards the location of the levers.
Jan 7, 2023 12:34 am
Pleased with his new servants, even if they didn't seem to be the best cooks, nor very hygienic, S'sylin decided to find out more from them.

"Good. I assume you live nearby? Tell me what you know of this place."
Jan 10, 2023 4:40 pm
@gnellson - The light is actually a lot better than it has any business being, and you can't see a source for it.

@majunior @trustyjustin - The symbols top and bottom seem to all be of the same style, but only two sets of them match. For one set, the matching levers seem to already be pulled, which would account for the kobold's hallway being open already. The other matching set hasn't been touched.

The kobolds respond again - still in Giantish. "We have lived in the Halls of Winter for all our lives and all our ancestors lives, and all the lives of our ancestors' ancestors. We guard the Sentinel of Frost, and wait for his awakening. When he awakens, we must battle him while our elders find a way to put him back to sleep. And now that you have come from the heavens above the ice, the time is nigh!"

There are cheers all around at the last of these proclamations, and they echo down the hall behind them as the story spreads. From the sounds of the cheers, there's at least a thousand or so back there.
OOC:
I'm not hiding what they're saying under the assumption that S'sylin has no motive to hide the conversation. If there's anything you aren't going to share, just say specify what that would be.
Jan 10, 2023 11:03 pm
Cualli pulls out a small pencil from his bag of alchemical things. The lead gives the glint of graphite and magic. He draws on the ground and in front of S'Sylin appears an illuminated message written at his feet.

Ask them what happens if we open the other door.

OOC:
Rythorn doesn't have anything to add here. He will get in position to pull the other lever and wait.
Jan 11, 2023 11:13 pm
The Dark Dragonborn looked past the kobolds in front of him, listening to the cacaphony. Indeed, it seemed he had gained a great many potential servants. He did wonder what the time was nigh for though. He noted the scribbling of his felow student, and with a sigh he decided to acquiesce.
Giant: "My smooth-skinned companion wishes to know what is beyond that door over there, with the levers.."
Jan 16, 2023 3:06 pm
This request ignites a furor amongst the kobolds. All at once several voices ring out in answer.

"No! Do not touch the levers!"
"The allies of evil will awaken!"
"Our doom is upon us!"

The lead kobold - or at least the one that's less in awe of you than the others - speaks up again. "Truth be told, we do not know even that there is a door, although if your wisdom says there is, then obviously it is true. But our prophecies say that our great enemies may someday be released to help the Sentinel of Frost."

A few of the kobolds grab ahold of S'sylin's hands, trying to lead him down the passageway. "Come away from the temptation of evil machinery. Come look upon the Sentinel's tomb and regain your resolve."
OOC:
If it's not entirely clear - hopefully it is - the kobolds would love your assistance with this battle they're apparently supposed to fight now that you've shown up. That doesn't mean you have to, obviously, but it's what they want, and it might make friends down here. On the other hand, making friends sounds like it could make enemies as well. Is there anything you can do to find out more before going ahead? Or do you know all you need to know already?
