Most pleased with winning some allies thanks to his deft diplomacy, S'sylin led himself be guided down the passageway. He called back to the others.
"Leave the levers! Come! We should see this 'sentinel of frost' my new friends have battled for generations for ourselves!"
Jan 16, 2023 5:21 pm
"Oh yay," Verin mutters. "More cold."

Shivering and wet, she makes her way along to see this Sentinel.

Lash doesn't see a way to climb back up from the fall so he joins the trek to the sentinel.

Okay, sounds like these other levers are probably a trap, and I'd like to see this tomb anyways. Hey S'sylin can you ask them not to attack me if I come down there?
Not waiting for an answer, Cualli takes a drag off of his cigarette. A special blend of light tobacco and levitation magic.
He descends onto the ground below.

Rythorn will lower himself down to the sublevel and follow as the last person into the corridor after the kobolds.

Following the kobolds, you're led deeper into the tunnels, past untold generations worth of decayed detritus and the abandoned accumulation of the eternity that the kobolds have been trapped unnoticed below the rest of the world. Tattered canvases look as though they'd crumble to dust if they were touched as they hang loosely in front of the tiny insets that the diminutive lizard-people unwillingly inherited from the drow - the only semblance of privacy they've ever had. But these slums are their homes. You pass several communal kitchens where rust monsters and slugworms are rotisseried above open flame, and you can't help but wonder how they could have lasted down here so long.

Finally, you come to a stop in front of a set of huge stone doors that reach at least twenty feet high - clearly gaintish construction. One of the two doors is open a few feet, and you're ushered inside. On the other side of the door, dormant arcane circuits are etched into the floor, but the patterns are seemingly broken or incomplete. In the center of the floor is a magic barrier of some kind, and inside it is an ice elemental that stands nearly as tall as the doors. It is frozen in place, probably by the barrier.

But as you study it, one icy blue eye - over the course of a minute - turns to lock onto you.

"Well, if anything down here screams, 'go tell our professor about what you found right this very moment,' it's this," Verin says, putting her hands on her hips.
Jan 21, 2023 3:44 am
I'm not touching anything. I have already triggered two traps so I stand still and just gawk at the elemental.
After a minute,
Well, now that I have seen their secret I'm ready to leave.

"Hmph. Have some spine." S'sylin shot back, not ready to abandon his new underground kingdom just yet. Instead he began inspecting the broken wards to see if they could be repaired or, even better, if there was some way to banish the elemental back to its plane..

"When that thing gets out and you end up dead, I'll be sure they put that on your tombstone," Verin assures the dragonborn.

Rythorn stands in awe of the elemental. They don't have things like that where he comes from. "Is it worth the risk of letting it out? What do these Kobolds think? Is this on their side or their enemy?"
Jan 23, 2023 1:25 pm
"Oh.... definitely their enemy." S'sylin replied nonchalantly as he went over the ward's patterns, making sure not to touch any.
"They mentioned it woke up a few times and their elders somehow trapped it again while the tribe kept it busy, so I think the ward is failing and the kobolds managed to patch it up every time so far before this thing freed itself completely.."

With S'sylin's synopsis, Lash decides to help decipher the arcane circuits.

Laaesh discovers - with some time and study - that the circuit is complete, it's just out of place. Someone has, at some point in the far past, actually picked up some of the 200-pound stones and exchanged their places on the floor. The question is why? And the answer is obvious. Someone never wanted that circuit completed. So should you complete it now? You've heard stories of spells that had to be finished to be dispelled. But you've also seen what can happen if spells that were never meant to be used are used. The Mournland anyone?

If this stone was there and that stone was here, it would activate a spell. But I can't say what the spell would do.

I feel like I'm being led into another trap. Somebody else make a choice.

"Again, I'm pretty sure we know someone who would know the answer," Verin sighs. "We ran from smaller elementals on the beach, are we really standing around this one deciding if we should screw around with it?"
Jan 24, 2023 5:37 pm
"I'm inclined to agree with Verin here. No need to be messing with something this powerful if we can get someone more experienced to verify it. The last thing we want is to make this elemental angry and then set it loose on ourselves."

While examining the pattern S'sylin scratched at his maw. He certainly had the strength to move the stones, but not knowing what would happen when one completed such a large ritualistic spell did give him ample pause. He had little desire to somehow doom Stormreach... and himself with it. Still, the lure of raw power beckoned to him and his gaze was hungry..
"Very well. Let us ask the good professor...

OOC:
On one of my devices, there sits a post that was supposed to go out Friday. I say this not to excuse my delay, but so that you're not thoroughly confused if it accidentally pops up at some point.
With your minds made up, you begin to head back out, with S'sylin explaining that you must seek guidance on the matter (however you want to explain that). This does not sit well with all of the kobolds, however, and by the time you've reached the entrance to their tunnels, there is a veritable horde of tiny lizard-people surrounding you, yelling and cursing not only you but also each other. When you try to begin climbing back up, looking for handholds or some other way to get back up (Acrobatics/Environment check, DC 12), they begin pelting you with tiny stones, fish bones, and other pieces of trash. "No run away!" "Stay and help!" "Evil-hearted giants!"

I cast Thaumaturgy to cause harmless tremors in the ground for 1 minute to distract the kobolds. Hopefully the party recognizes the tremors from my previous casting. And I start climbing.
