Rules Discussion

Nov 13, 2022 4:08 pm
I decided to make a place specific for rules discussion. As I am really new to the system I don't know all of the rules. I may have questions from time to time, or ask for player input. This thread will keep that discussion out of the story thread so it can be more easily tracked.

Also, you player may bring rules issues up if you disagree with something I decide. I consider myself fair and willing to listen, but I retain ultimate authority on how things go. If I tell you no it will be for a reason that I'm happy to explain. Rule of Cool Plot tends to win out with me.

I'm happy to help if you have any questions.

I thought you would be, I'm sure I will, and ill appreciate the help. Right now, absent of players making things complicated, I think I get the basics. Once the shenanigans start though... :D

Lol It's always the shenanigans!

With the dice coding, how do we implement the +1 column shifts for Talents?
Nov 16, 2022 10:25 pm
That's a good point. So the way it works right now you type the name/rank in the "Reason" and 1d100 in the roll and it does the job. So if you have a column shift you van just type it in. Not as cool as clicking on the sheet, but it will work.

I'm not very familiar with this system yet as its my first time playing, so once I understand the rules better and know what would be useful to the sheets I'll be making updates. If you let me know how shifting works for talents or tell me the page in the rulebook I'll see about adding the feature.

So, Talents are the skills of this game. Weapon and Fighting talents...aka martial arts...start on page 90 of the pdf.

They column shift your stats when they apply, but each talent could apply different shifts. For example:

Note
Weapons Specialist: The character with this Talent gains a + 2CS with a single weapon of choice. This may be any type of weapon, missile or melee. The character who is a weapon specialist will also increase his initiative when using this weapon by 1.

But

Martial Arts B: This form of martial arts is keyed on offense and inflicting damage in short, quick bursts, and includes such disciplines as boxing. The practitioner of this form of martial arts gains a +1CS to Fighting ability when engaged in unarmed combat.
CS means Column Shift. So if your Fighting is Excellent and you have these Talents, it becomes Incredible while using your specialized weapon but only Remarkable while fighting unarmed.

Short of programming every possible scenario into the sheet, I'm not sure how to use that. Might be better to just have the range of options on the sheet and let the player click the one they need, rather than coding it for the specific stats?

I could just add a roll button in the talent section where you can just type in the appropriate shifted ability rank.

That could work.

Raising a interesting discussion point:

would our heroes who did not stay to help the diamond woman lose Karma points, and likewise since Nightcrawler and MM stayed, does he gain Karma? I understand that how the whole Karma mechanic is supposed to be driven.

Well, yes, Nightcrawler and Multiple Man will earn Karma at the end of that scene. The rest should lose 5 Karma. I'm filing this under "Allowing Other Crimes" because of all the strange circumstances. You don't know what is happening exactly and you had an apparent ally telling you not to engage. So the loss should be minimal because sometimes discretion is the better part of valor.

I just want to double check, are we 1) Allowing retroactive expenditures of karma, and 2) Allowing those expenditures to be for the exact amount needed?

I am totally fine if we are, just making sure I'm on the same page.

Yes that was how I read it just now, but the wording does come across as vague. There is a minimum spend of 10 that I think we should stick too...but yeah...I think spending retroactive makes more sense so you aren't wasting buckets of it on one minor roll then retting a 100.

That's actually the design, though. By RAW, you declare your intent to spend karma before the roll. It prevents characters from just making sure they just succeed on every roll. You have to determine how important your action is ahead of time.

It's a gamble, by intent.

Especially when you consider that it becomes easier to bank karma if you spend just enough... you can regularly take in more than you spend.

Like I said though, I'm good however you want to play it.

Well...for now I like this idea. If it gets abused to much we can discuss altering the plan.
