Sepulcher of the Mountain GodThe Town of Hillkant
Early spring

It had been more than six months since the townsfolk of Hillkant discovered the Curwen depravities. Since then, our brave men and women did their best to forget about the horrors they encountered at the Homestead.

It was almost as if normal life did not want them though. Nightmares have visited our heroes frequently, reminding them of goat-eyed men, demons made of mud and humans used as cattle.

Some have tried to find their redemption in faith, others in studies of the occult and magic. There were also those who have tried to banish the dreams through tough physical work, be it the one of a warrior or a thief.

Sometimes it worked. When it did not, screams have guided our local heroes to finally awaking.

All of them were in need of closure, one way or another.
Sooner or later, all of our heroes would finally learn about a clue, a rumor about a weird family matching the Curwen description, wandering around the village Inira - a settlement on the northern side of the mountains - where they have been talking nonsense into young folk, trying to persuade them to join some odd faith.

It would not take much more for our characters to prepare for the journey.
OOC:
Alright people, happy to see things moving forward once again!

This will be a short adventure following up on the escape of the Curwen trio, with a short set-up phase in the village of Inira. Feel free to describe what your characters were doing for the past 6 months and if they are travelling from Hillkant or some other location where they have undergone their training!

Whatever story you decide to go for, you should all end up in Inira. There is not an inn per se (this is a small village), but travellers can ask for food and lodging at the small temple to Ira the Mountain god in exchange for donation.

Following the events at the Curwen's manor, Riffen has found himself living further on the outskirts of society. His farm has fallen into disrepair with only the wretch tending the turnips and maintaining the house. Villagers have become increasingly concerned as strange sounds and lights are noticed coming from the depths of the house. Riffen has also undergone some physical change with the hair on his head going completely white over the course of a few weeks since desecrating the alter in the grinder below. Riffen arrives at the village of Inira looking for answers...
Nov 17, 2022 12:56 pm
Jasen and Josen have taken it upon themselves to be the wardens of the forest around the old Curwen place. They do their best to run off the few nosey folk and to keep the 'cattle' contained. No good answer has presented itself with respect to those surviving 'cattle' and the cousins have decided that as long as the 'cattle' stay on the Curwen farm, they can live out what's left of their lives.

Dewayne has built a small temple on the edge of Hillkant and ministers to the wretches and a few of the town folk. He's trying to establish a sense of good, hoping to push away the foul influence of the Curwens.

Not much is known about Wyna's days. She is often gone for a week at a time and when she does appear, it's in a new set of clothes and with a few spare coins. Some of which she offers to Dewayne's temple, she never misses a service if she's in town.

Since Mother Breadwife has become a cleric to Ira, her story fits in well with Inira, and I thought it might be a good way to introduce the rumors of Curwens in Inira and also get the gang back together.

Feel free to to use the notes as a motivation, or ignore it if your characters have other motivations for going to Inira
Mother Breadwife

Having returned from the adventure to her farm, she could not settle in. She felt the call of something greater and was pulled to the town of Inira. There she discovered a temple to Ira and was for the first time since the Curwen's, she felt at peace. She was given lodging in the temple and devoted herself to the study and and service of Ira.

For awhile, her existence was content. That is until one day she was running errands and got a glimpse of a small group that looked similar to the Curwens who escaped. Once again she was troubled with thoughts of the Curwens, this time at the idea of them running loose in the same town that she is now calling home. SHe asked around and heard some rumors of a new family who moved into town, but there wasn't much else to go on. No one seemed to know much about them ,or where to find them.

Not knowing what else to do, she wrote a series of notes to her fellow adventurers: "I cannot say for sure, but I have some reason to believe the Curwen might be in Inira. If you chose to come, you can find me at the temple." and had them delivered via a courier passing through Inira.

Cynwe

Having returned to town, Cynwe realized her existence so far has been rather, short sighted. Her practice of astrology was still going strong, but she now knew was much more than just reading some tea leaves or the moon phases. Having seen real magic, and having some of the spell books to help, she found she had a natural aptitude for spellcraft and spent her time practicing and learning.

Cynwe had just found mastered the basics of the art, and felt that she had gone as far as she can without going off in search of a teacher when a note from Mother Breadwife arrived. This gave her the motivation she needed and she headed off for Inira.

Walt

Walt was always gambler and now with some gold from his adventurers, he plunged back into the gambling dens with renewed vigor. Unfortunately, luck was not on his side and after racking up a significant debt, he had no other choice but to turn to less legal means of making a living, namely that of a thief. This suited Walt jsut fine however, and he quickly raised enough to pay off his debts, at the cost of others gold.

Finding thievery to be more lucrative (and more fun) than gambling had been, he traveled to Inira in search of new targets. He was just waking in a room he rented when the letter from Mother Breadwife found him, and seeing as he was a short distance from the temple ,decided to pay a visit.

Kari

Kari returned to her mushroom farm, and just kept farming mushroom. She found it rather easy to sink back into the routine. She missed Tiny, but life comes and life goes, something the dwarves had been comfortable with for generations. She did however, realize the importance of staying in practice with fighting skills, and devoted more of her time to training, a part of heritage she had previously ignored. She was just in the middle of a training session when a courier arrived with an interesting letter.

While Kari felt content in her current station, she also did not want to leave the Curwens go unpunished, or worse, to cause more trouble elsewhere, grabbed her gear, and set off to the temple.

Duri has returned to his trade in Hillkant, a stonemasons life seemed rather simple and safe since the events of yesteryear. Most of his trade was in tombstones and even that infrequent. Duri has kept the sword of his fallen comrade sharp and remained in contact with Slim. Upon receiving mother Breadwifes note, he dutifully packed his belongings closed his workshop and made his way to Inira.

Odric having lost his brother Adric in the grinder has walked the fringes of the region. Sleeping under the stars in all weathers and stopping only briefly in towns to collect essential supplies. Rumours of a cloacked unkempt wild man filter through the towns, some say he is looking for vengeance against some evil, some suggest he's cursed and brings misfortune with him, others disregard him as a man who has lost his mind...

Odric arrives in Inira hungry, unwashed and on the trail of something.

Sepulcher of the Mountain GodThe village of Inira
Early spring

It took a week or two, but finally many of the original Curwen cullers, as some would call them, arrived to Inira. While waiting for her companions, Mother Breadwife had the time to investigate more about the Curwens and found out the following:

1) There were more people accompanying the Curwens now, as it would seem that the family has acquired a following since their disappearance. It would not be hard to guess how they did it, as the surrounding towns and villages reported some of the poorest families missing - those, who would many times struggle with surviving the winter.

2) There are less travelers around than usual at this time of the year.

3) After getting some help from Walt and Wyna, Mother Breadwife managed to find out that one of the ancient tombs the saints of Ira - Aven-Kruz the Tribal king, has been broken into. The Curwen activity is the strongest around here, so it may be a good place to start the search.

As the whole group meets at the temple dedicated to Ira - the only stone building in the whole village - it is time for Mother Breadwife to present her findings and to set up the expedition sooner rather than later.

Mother Breadwife looks at the group assembled before her at the temple. She was glad to see them again and it felt a bit like coming home, regardless of the fact that they were currently gathered at the Ira's temple.

"Its great to see you all again, and I'm sure we will have to time to catch up. But let me get to right to the point as it appears the remaining Curwens have traveled here and are active. I shouldn't need to remind you what kind of trouble they can cause if they are left to their own devices and I like it here. I would hate to see this place ruined by whatever foul work they are up to."

She pauses for a moment to gather her thoughts and continues, "As you know this temple is dedicate to Ira, the mountain god. This is a special place as it also close the tombs and crypts of the saints of Ira. One of those was recently defiled. Some people matching the description of the Curwens have been spotted in the area and seem to be the likely suspects. Beyond that we don't much. I suggest we head out to the tomb and look for any clues post haste."

She pauses again this time with a glimmer of amusement in her eyes, "Of course, only after we have had time to take our fill of the bounty of Ira. she says with a smile and unveils a table filled with fresh berries, breads and mead. "Please, help yourself and we can head out packs and bellies full of the blessing of Ira."

Looking at the spread, you start to realize why it is that Mother Breadwife seems so content here.

The tomb of Aven-Kruz, the Tribal king

It takes about a half a day of a treck through the mountains to reach the tomb of Aven-Kruz. A tribal king who lived a centuries ago, he unified the smaller tribes of the mountains and ended the war with the giants, and while doing so, adopting their devotion to Ira - the God of the Mountains.
Ira has since become a patron of the local land, a lawful deity teaching respect to the cycle of nature and finding growth in struggle against odds.

Luckily for the group, Mother Breadwife knows the way well and is able to lead the group without any hitch. As the adventurers finally cross one last grassy hill, they see a stone entrance about the size of two very tall men standing on top of each other.

https://i.imgur.com/ApIIE2X.jpg
Entrance into the tomb

The stone door with an iron ring in the middle is left slightly open, indicating that the seal that should protect the place had been broken. Upon entry, the group finds themselves in a dark passage, through which it would be unwise to continue without any source of light.
OOC:
I have noticed that none of you have any torches or lanterns! I would strongly advise purchasing some - they are fairly cheap and you would have troubles navigating the tomb otherwise. We can say you did this retrospectively during your preparations, just let me know in post what (or how much) did everyone buy!
The passage opens to a wide natural cavern where a group of skeletal corpses lie in stately repose. A larger, decorated corpse lies on a black stone bier at the back of the chamber. There is flowstone everywhere here, giving the room an eerie vibe.
Wind whistles strangely here, as if the cavern is breathing.
OOC:
A search check would be in order here! For those intending to do so, please roll a 1d20+Int modifier!

I'm hoping it's just a classic stall, happens sometimes in PbP games. Let's see if we can get things moving again!
Odric is the first one brave enough to explore the tomb. Carefully, he sheds light from his torch forward, not going further than needed.
There are eight bodies within side alcoves, all placed around a central stone slab on which the ninth body resides. This has to be Aven-Kruz, the ancient tribal chieftain. Buried along with his most loyal ones and covered by what seems to be... A cape of multi-colored feathers?

There is no way such a thing should survive for so long, the tomb is clearly ancient. Confused, Odric turns himself around and notices that a passage leads to the south, hidden behind the curtains of flowstone.
OOC:
I will leave it to you whether you wish to examine the cape or proceed further!
Dec 4, 2022 8:43 pm
Jasen and Josen enter the room and take up positions just inside the door, bows ready.

Dewayne enters behind Odric and says a short prayer honoring the dead.

Wyna begins a slow circle around the room peering over the bodies. Ostensibly she's looking for signs the bodies have been disturbed recently. But that doesn't stop her from noting items that may want to travel with her later.

Jasen's arrow flies true and hits the undead chieftain right in the head. With one last growl, Aven-Kruz looses the demonic glow in his eyes as his dead body falls limp.
It is still not the end of things though, for his warriors continue to fight even after their master's demise.

Kari becomes surrounded by two zombies, both clawing at the dwarf. The attacks leave nasty looking wounds, but the warrior manages to stand her ground.
The cannot unfortunately be said about Dewane. As one of the undead jumps at her, she reacts too late, mortified by the presence of Aven-Kruz. An elongated claw slices through her neck, bringing her down, gulping on her own blood.
Josen is the last one attacked. Still fumbling with his bow, he is clawed the same way as the others, thus receiving a nasty looking wound!
OOC:
Jasen's arrow manages to bring Aven-Kruz's HP to 0, thus killing him! All characters can be controlled once again!
Kari receives 6 damage total

Dewane receives 4 damage, unfortunately bringing her down to 0. You guys have 1 turn to try and bring her back as she is Bleeding out.
Josen receives 5 damage.

Mother Breadwife sees Dewane fall and rushes to her side. She lays her hands on Dewanes wounds and cries out to Ira asking for healing, "Return to her the strength to defend this mountain!"

As Aven-Kruz falls, Walt sees Kari being out numbered by zombies and moves behind the first zombie and viciously stabs at it with his dagger.

Kari glances thankfully at Walt as she attempts to parry the second zombies attack. She manages to clear enough space for her to bring her short sword to bear and swipes at the zombie.
OOC:
Not sure how much to roll for mother breadwife's hit dice to heal Dewane. Depends on alignment, MW is lawful. If Walt is allowed a backstab here, I believe its 1d10+1 (after his str modifier which I forgot to apply to his attack roll though it shouldnt matter with that roll), if not its 1d4+1.

Mother Breadwife rushes to Dewane and Lays her hands on her. Grey-blueish light emanates from the cleric's hands as she beckons Ira to save the life of the woman.
Ira answers. The festering wound closes with black ooze being expunged from the wound, yet a horrific scar remains. Dewane gasps for air as her life seems safe once more!
OOC:
Since Mother Breadwife managed to absolutely overkill the healing AND rolled a natural 20, I have decided to cancel the zombie's critical hit, which would cause Dewane to loose 1d4 stamina temporarily. She is now back to full HP (4/4).
Dewane WILL however permanently loose 1 point of Stamina as a result of Bleeding out. This will bring her from 10 to 9, the modifier remains the same.
Meanwhile, the combat continues. Walt manages to dodge a zombie's claw and burrows his dagger into it's side, yet aside from a slightly choked growl, no other reaction comes from the zombie.

Kari tries to retaliate at her foes, however the pressure from their attacks is too much and she ends up having to defend only!

The Unwanted wretch that had been following Odric jumps at the other zombie attacking Kari, biting it in the leg. The undead growls and it would almost seem that the residual magic in the wretch's body is working against the curse of undeath, yet that does not stop the zombie from attacking Kari further.

The other Wretch zigzags through the combatants to the corpse of Aven-Kruz and starts to undo the chieftain's feathered cloak. He should be able to bring it back Riffen soon.
The mage himself keeps babbling, gurgling and howling, as his teeth get covered in his own blood. Riffen's hands start emanating a blueish glow, as the white-haired man crouches in almost an animalistic position.

The zombies do not care though. They continue their reckless attack with indifference to any harm done to them.

Walt stumbles back as his foe claws at him. The zombie falls onto the man, biting and clawing. None could survive such an attack without divine help.

Duri keeps struggling against the tribesman and finally the undead manages to strike through with one hand, giving the warrior a nasty chest wound.

And finally, Kari. The brave warrior managed to hold both of the zombies for quite a moment, yet finally, even after the assistance of Odric and his companion, a strike goes through the dwarf's defense. The dwarf stumbles back, gravely wounded.

Kari stumbles back, still standing after the assualt but barely. She lashes out with her sword. Walt, on the ground cries in pain as Mother Breadwife kneals beside him and once again calls on Ida to heal the fallen thief. Cynwe, who had been shocked at the sudden arrival of the undead horrors finally regained her composure and lashed out at one of the closest skeletons with her staff. She then invoked one of the spells she had learned, calling on her magic to infuse her hand with power.

Things take a dark turn as the zombies continue their offensive. Kari keeps falling back, mercilessly attacked with such force that she has troubles mounting up a proper retaliation.

Mother Breadwife slams into another undead, hoping to get the tribesman from Walt's soon to be corpse. As she proclaims the sacred words of healing, fear grips her heart as there is no response from her god.

Cynwe joins Mother Breadwife and smashes at the zombie with her staff. The undead growls and grabs the staff, shoving Cynwe of her feet and interrupting her spell casting!

Riffen's hands glow blue as he lunges at one of the remaining zombies. A bright flash appears as his staff connects with the zombie's head. The negative energies clash with a great force that sends most of those nearby staggering, yet as the party refocuses their eyes, they can see the zombie laying below Riffen's feet, limp.

A wet sound wakes everyone from their surprise. The fighting is not done and a horror of a scene opens up before everyone, as they look on the two remaining zombies. Kari lays on her back, her face almost unrecognizable from being claw. The undead above her finally raises his head, ready to strike at the next victim.
OOC:
Kari is considered Bleeding out, once again you guys have 1 turn to save her!

Mother Breadwife, not about to abandon one of the folks who she summoned to investigate the sightings, kneels down once again next to the Kari and cries out for the aid of Ira in healing the fallen dwarf.

Cynwe, still coming to terms with her new magical powers decides to take a more direct route and swings at the closest zombie with her dagger.

The sound of cracking ribs fills the room as Odric drives the axe through the chest of the final zombie. "Rotten bastards!" He looks around at his company, what a disaster...

Mother Breadwife stands after ensuring Kari was healed and looks upon Walt. The gambler was not a close friend, but she still felt a connection with him from their past experiences together. "I'm sorry we couldn't do more, but we won't let this sacrifice be wasted" Mother Breadwife says and looks more carefully around the tomb now that their foes are dispatched.

Eerie quiet fills the cave as Odric crushes the last zombie with his battleaxe. Walt is dead, his luck ran out this time as the gods decided he is no longer worthy of life.
His fine dagger (1d4+1 damage) lies on the ground next to him. Any person ruthless enough to loot him may also find his pouch for gold (8 GP, 4 SP, 30 CP), a hand-sized mirror and a set of gambling dice.

As the adventurers search the tomb, they also find the following:

Next to the place where Aven-Kruz was lying, there is a heavy steel mace that has flanges plated with a silver alloy that is untouched by rust and age. Upon its handle is the symbol of a mountain with magma-like root extensions (a holy symbol of Ira the Mountain God) and along its shaft is the image of a wolf under an outstreched wing (the sigil of Aven-Kruz).
Mace of Aven-Kruz [2-handed, 2d6 damage, requires STR 16 to wield]. (50 gp)

A breastplate made of interlinked bones can be taken from one of the alcoves. The bones are large like that of a sabre-toothed cat or a mammoth. Although the armor feels sturdy the bones have begun to crack with age.
Tribal bone breastplate [AC +3, light armor, shatters on a critical hit to wearer.](25 gp).

Riffen is brought a cape made of multi-colored feathers by his Wretch. It is clear that the cape used to be magical, yet only a tiny remnant of its former power remains. What power it is, Riffen cannot be sure. (20 gp)

A clay urn sits atop the bier. It is filled with a mixed assortment of triagular and square bronze coins. The coins are marked with images of tribal chieftans from ages long ago. (10 sp worth. To a collector or historian they may be worth much more).
OOC:
I would advise checking the status tracker - some of you have been hurt pretty badly and healing might be wise.

Once you divvy up the loot, we shall continue!

"What next?"
Jan 29, 2023 8:57 am
OOC:
Seifi; Riffen has a pitchfork that used to count as a spear, should it be a staff now? He cut the end off as part of his hermit life and the fact that his turnip farm is effectively overgrown and unattended now.
Jan 29, 2023 8:59 am
Odric looks at Riffen with contempt. "If everyone else is ok I will take this breastplate. I have no use for these other things."
Jan 29, 2023 9:00 am
Saddened by the passing of his companion, Duri looks away from the looting that's going on and sheds a few tears out of sight of the others.

@Redwhippet The change of the weapon makes sense, feel free to switch the pitchfork for the staff!

Odric now wields the Tribal bone breastplate.

Jasen now wields a Dagger +1 (1d4+1).

The rest of the loot had been added to Party loot and its gold value would be distributed after the end of the dungeon.
The group divides some of the equipment among themselves and continues onwards through the only path that leads onward through the cave.

They go through a dusty passage that reveals a small chamber carved from the living rock. An obsidian and basalt shrine decorated with a crude hooded idol crowds the space. At the southern end of the passage is a door of blue-tinged metal.

The shrine is clearly dedicated to Ira and examining it reveals a crude bowl carved into the flat surface of the stone block. The symbol of Ira (a mountain with magma-like roots) is carved into the bottom of the bowl. The symbol in the bowl is partially obscured by flakes of dried blood.
Once Riffen with his new cape comes near the shrine, the holy symbol of Ira begins to pulse with a reddish orange glow, illuminating secret writing on the wall over the shrine. Mother Breadwife recognizes the script as the historical language of the tribes and could possibly translate it with a DC 8 check.
The writing has some similarities with the dwarfish speech and could be understood by a person speaking Dwarfish with a DC 15 check.

"Ah I see, well it's not pretty..... It's some sorta blood ritual and we'd need quite a bit of it spilt in this bowl. Then you chant something and slosh the blood over the door to open it...... I don't like it...."
Feb 22, 2023 2:54 pm
Riffen snatches up the wretch by the arm. "Come here wretch, I have a solution for the blood" He snarls....
Feb 27, 2023 6:40 am
"Hang on now Riffen! Let's see if we can handle this differently" Odric blocks Riffen momentarily and looks to the others for support....
Feb 27, 2023 12:55 pm
Josen steps up beside Odric, "Stink as they might, I'm not sure killing the wretches is the way to go here. We probably don't want to deal with whatever that ritual summons."
Feb 27, 2023 10:28 pm
OOC:
Apologies for the delay people!

Riffen's Wretch has 8HP and 4HP is needed for the ritual, so he should be able to survive it.

As for the ritual itself - well it's kind of on the boundary there. On one hand, it is a sacred rite practiced by the faithful of Ira for centuries, on the other hand it IS a bit outdated, barbaric and painful by todays standards.

Nonetheless, apparently this is so far the only way of how to proceed!

"O rubbish, come here wretch!" Riffen pulls the wretch up by the arm and stretches out a gnarled hand for a knife.

"Hand me a knife! This wretched creature has had worse and does as he asked regardless!!!"
Mar 7, 2023 12:29 pm
"Oh bother, Here. " Josen offers his dagger.
Mar 7, 2023 3:17 pm
The Wretch whimpers as Riffen cuts the poor soul with the dagger and starts reciting the Chant of Stone. The magma-like sigils on the altar glow ever-more bright as he proclaims the sacred words, until they finally flash with the last words and dissapear.

There is only one way to test if the ritual succeeded and as the party paints the door with the blood ornament, they slowly creak open. Behind them, a dusty passage slopes down to a set of bronze double doors with brass fittings. The doors depict a world-spanning mountain on which lounges a giant of horrific countenance.
At the base of the mountain carving a man is depicted with a strange horned helmet raising an iron-shod club, as if in triumph. Two plain brass rings are secured to each door.
OOC:
Riffen now has the following item:
Blood sanctified by Ira (2/2) - Grants +4 Stamina for 1d4 days when anointing a worshipper of Ira with it.
