Boseman High School Shenanigans: Episode 1

"Jesus Christ, can you guys fucking move?" Lily whisper shouts down the hallway at the stragglers. The cross section made her feel like quiet was suddenly more appropriate.

"Back to school, right? Right?" she asks Emily.

Freddie glances at Zach, and says, "Don't take chances, dude," and hustles after the girls. He settles into a short stepping walk, as he really doesn't want to trip and send Priya flying to the floor. The smell is awful. She could use a shower. He could use a shower. Mmmm, Kelly Unger's shower! He shakes his head a tiny bit. Focus, focus on every step.

In the Steam Tunnels

At the intersection, which is sparsely lit by bare bulbs like three of the four corridors (just not the one leading to the asylum), Lily and Emily are preparing to head left, for the school -- when a hustling Fred catches up with Priya's small but divinely shapely form over his shoulder. The boy is huffing a little, and Zach isn't with him.

Elsewhere Underground, back in the Tunnel Leading to the Asylum

Using his phone light -- which is about all the thing is good for, considering he still isn't getting service -- Zach watches in disgust as Gromn's body moves again like there's something inside it, like there are unseen puppet strings being plucked. The man's neck swells and bulges, then his jaws are forced open and something starts coming out. Two small worms emerge from between his lips... no, are they feelers? No! Eyestalks! They are horrific eyestalks, and they are followed by the rest of the spotted yellow and gray, foot-long slug that is slowly forcing its way from the janitor's mouth. Slime pools beneath Gromn's face as this happens, and the sound the thing makes when it plops onto the floor is one Zach will never, ever forget.

Zach tries really hard to keep it together in order to smash the slug.

As gross as that weird slug - and especially the fact that it just came out of Gromn - is, Zach manages to keep a fairly level head. He raises the bat Lily handed back to him and tries to strike it down at the weird creature. It's not murder if it's a weird alien parasite slug, right?

The bat hits the slug right in its center. There's a disgusting squelching sound that makes the teenage boy sick to his stomach and not for the first time today, he feels like throwing up. Despite the situation, he closes his eyes for a moment to center himself and keep the contents of his stomach inside. Then he opens them again and finds the slug - or rather the goopy pulp that remains from it under his bat - unmoving. "Fuck," he mutters to himself. Then he turns his attention to Gromn. If this slug was inside of him, maybe he wasn't himself? Maybe it was the slug doing those things. He hesitantly nudges the janitor's shoulder with the tip of his bat, checking for any reaction.

"What the fuck?" Lily rasps, frustrated and pleading with the absent Zach. With great effort, she passes back the way Fred just came and keeps her eyes peeled for Zach’s light.

"Come on, Zach! Jesus! Come on! We are waiting for you!" she says, before banging her bat against the wall a few times in frustration.

When Zach's poking gets no reaction, he instead tries it with Gromn's head, the only reaction to which is it limply rolling to the side. His eyes are open, staring up at Zach. He's dead. Zach has no more doubt about that. The realization makes him turn and rush up to the others. It wasn't me! he tells himself. The slug did it!

When he catches up and Emily asks what happened, he hesitates. "You're not going to think I'm crazy, even if what I'll tell you will sound insane, right?"

As the five teens move back towards the school, Zach explains, "There was some kind of slug inside Gromn. He's dead, so it climbed out of his mouth, probably to get inside me next or something. I smashed it with the bat." He shows off the goo on his weapon. "But it was freaky. You think the other teachers acting weird also have those things inside them?"

"Is that why he was vomiting? Spraying slug eggs on us? We've got to get deslugger stuff. What is that, Ivermectin maybe? Let's go fast! To the Fredmobile!"

Priya mostly, but all of them, got some of that goo on them. He feels his stomach lurch at the thought of some space tapeworm growing inside him.

"No dummy. Ivermectin is for dogs, cattle, and sheep, and don't ask me why I know this. It might kill humans and fucking hell Freddie, way to make the tension go away. Hey! We can try it on Priya first! What a great idea! If she doesn't die we're good!"

The stress was ratcheting up on Emily now like growing tumbleweed. The worse it got, the worse it got.

Zach frowns. "I thought Ivermectin was for anti-vaxxers," he says. "Whatever. We can think about medicine once we're back out of here. Is anyone else in favor of skipping our afternoon classes in order to find a shower instead?" He ignores Emily's pointed comments about Priya. He understands where they're coming from and decides he doesn't want anything to do with that argument.

Burdened with the unconscious and rather floppy Priya, the foursome move as quickly and quietly as they can down the hallway, heading back to the steps that lead back up to the basement level of Boseman High. Up those rough, concrete stairs they go, until they reach the door that opens into the hallway -- the door that Zach smashed the doorknob off of.

Cracking the door to peer through, the teens see that class is in session... and that the coast looks clear!

If you're intending to sneak out of the basement / school and make a clean getaway here, I'd like to run this as a Quick Encounter, which I haven't tried before. That would entail a roll from each of you, depending on your role in the getaway. The lookout would roll Notice, the planner would roll Academics or Common Knowledge to know which way through the school would likely be free of kids and teachers not in class, someone needs to get sneaky with Stealth, and someone needs to carry Priya with an Athletics roll. We'd roll these in order, as the outcome from one can affect the next. (Note, the corrected order is Planning, Notice, Stealth, Athletics.)

Not forcing you down that path though...
