Sarah quietly peruses the many books on the shelves, noting the titles that she is able to interpret. Noting Tereza's words, she opens the top drawer and is delighted to find chocolate, of which she partakes. She casually pulls out a book written in Latin and peruses the pages, trying to make what little sense she can remember from her college days.
Jan 28, 2023 9:49 am
'So does your housemate know bout... This?' Caroline asks as she gestures to the bookcase, eyes flicking over the titles in different languages. That was one of the lessons she had be lacking. Though she doubted she would be impressed with what was in the younger witches books. They were probably what was ruining her form.

Her eyes eyes flick towards the bottom drawer the second it's forbidden, and a smirk forms as she holds back a joke remembering the chief is with them. The poor woman had been teased enough today already.

As the chief starts to flick through the book Caroline's makes her way through the cramped room next to her. 'If you truly wish to learn I can show you some forms at some point.' She didn't want Sweeny picking up bad form from the book.
OOC:
Caroline is lacking in languages so if someone else wants to roll the research check? Or if she does help out would there be a penalty for having to use Google translate?

It takes Tereza a moment to look up from the book she was browsing in response to Caroline's question. "Huh?" she asks, clearly having been too distracted by her reading to understand the question. Once Caroline has repeated it, she says, "Nicholas knows I am a witch, but he thinks it is only spiritual belief with no power."

She then turns back to her book and is already absorbed in her research again by the time Caroline addresses Sweeney. Which is probably a good thing, as it saves the coven from having to endure another argument between Tereza and Caroline about which school of witchcraft is right.

Deacon looks around the room as they wait for Tereza to complete the ritual. Even though he knows it's an important step in the investigation, Deacon finds himself getting bored. Looking around at the various contents, he tries to keep himself occupied. Watching Sarah take a piece of chocolate, Deacon motions at her to toss him a piece. Watching Caroline look at the mysterious second drawer, Deacon gives his sister a conspiratorial grin and nods at the drawer.
OOC:
Deacon is literally not very research minded. I'll gladly roll to assist, but it'll be a l9w die roll.

Jemma drow home. The camera would observe her going into the backyard. There she unlocks a shed and enters. Inside she lights a fire and prepare one of several tables for the upcoming analysis of the samples.

The takes out a morter and pessle, a fresh notebook and some basic ingrediences. She looks around, almost making eye contact with the camera, but it quickly pans away. When it returns, a large book has been added to the work table. It looks old and well cared for, properly handbound. Jemma had retrieved her Book of shadows from its hiding place. It is a book that she got from her grandmother weeks before she disappeared along with the coven.

With the samples in front of her, a blank book on her left, a book filled with knowledge on her right and a comfortable fire at her back, she begins her analysis.

Transition from Jemma in her workshop Tereza's apartment

It's been a couple hours of reading and searching through books, papers, and maybe even some crinkly scrolls, but the group has located a likely spell: praeteritum scriptum in anima materiae.

From there, we see a montage of the witches preparing the spell, gathering and preparing the needed ingredients, with the roots as the main object being used.

The camera holds on the gathered coven, candles flickering on their features as they prepare to cast...
OOC:
O.K., so rounds and stuff can be funky on PbP. What we're doing here is Difficult Dramatic Task, i.e., 2 successes needed over the number of rolls/rounds. We are going with number of rolls instead of rounds.

We're going with 3 Rolls, so we need 5 Successes total. I'm going to draw cards to see if we get a complication (or Joker). If a complication is drawn (club) we'll say it happens on the roll number that lines up with the card. So, if club is second card, complication occurs on second roll. Thus, if DT is completed on first round, complication never comes into play.

If more than one person wants to partake, that's cool, but only 3 rolls can be made that count toward the total success. Let's just try to roll with narrative permission and flow, so rollers just build off what the person before you has done.

...drawing to see if complication happens...

...O.K., no complication drawn. So, don't stand on ceremony--go ahead and make some rolls. I'd say we let Tereza decide which rolls she wants, and when, as she's leading this.

Meanwhile...back at Jemma's Workshop...
OOC:
@runekyndig What's the method Jemma is using here? Is this Science? Is this magic? My gut says a straight Spell Casting or Occult roll, given that she has the time and resources, here in her workshop.

Tereza puts meticulous care into setting up the ritual. Apparently, all of her magic supplies are stored inside that large trunk the others noticed when they entered. From there, she takes out a large mat which she rolls out on the floor, something to make sure she can properly draw the spell circle without getting in trouble with her landlord. She then begins drawing complex runes, many of which those of the others who know some things about divination rituals would be familiar with, though Caroline notes that Tereza is using a strange stroke pattern to draw them. The end result looks the same but the order in which the strokes are made is all wrong - in her opinion.

"We need blood to draw the middle circle," Tereza explains then. "Any volunteers?" She waits a beat, then says, "Do not worry, Chief. I will not draw blood. There is easier way. Modernized, yes?" She quickly leaves the bedroom and returns a few moments later with a bowl holding some gooey liquid inside. "This is two chicken eggs," she explains. "Very good replacement for blood. Works in almost all cases." She then uses the raw egg to draw a circle as well as a final rune into the center of the circle. She then places the roots into the middle of this set-up before setting up candles around the drawn outer circle. In another deviation from the way Caroline would do it, she doesn't light the candles one by one but hands matches to everyone here. "We will light every candle at the same time," she explains before giving a countdown. Then she arranges the present people around the circle, placing Deacon to her left and Sweeney to her right. Ordinarily, as the one leading the ritual, she would place the strongest witches to either side of her, but one, she doesn't want to fall into an argument of who is the most powerful here, and two, just putting the cutest ones to her sides seems like a pretty good deal. And it shouldn't weaken the energies too much, not enough to affect a simple spell like this one.

"You are lucky," she then explains. "The chant is in Latin, so you should be able to make the sounds we need with your mouthholes." She then speaks out the chant for this ritual slowly, emphasizing the right syllables and repeating until everyone has memorized it. Her pronunciation of Latin is strange, clearly heavily influenced by Czech while the others are more used to a way of pronouncing the dead language that is influenced by English. "Now, Caroline," she finally says. "If you lead ritual, I do what you say, your way. Now, I lead the ritual, so we do it my way. The way of the Thirteen Covens." She nods over to the crest hanging above her desk. "You play along, yes?" She waits for Caroline to acknowledge, then explains. "We do not link hands. We need a one-direction flow of energy, not a closed circle. Hold out right hand, palm open, thumb to earth." She demonstrates, holding her right arm out towards the probably very overwhelmed police chief. "Then, you use your left hand to hold the wrist of the person to your left. Thumbs, again, down." She takes Deacon's wrist. "No need to squeeze. Gentle is enough. Now, everyone, close your eyes and follow my lead."

She takes a deep breath and begins the Latin chant.
OOC:
Since Tereza is setting up and leading the ritual, I'll make the first roll. Anyone can go after that for the other two. I'd love to see the Chief make a roll 😆 but that would be mechanically bad, I think, and unsatisfying if a PC could roll instead. I assume Caroline and Sarah (the non-Sweeney one) have better Occult skills than Deacon, but I don't mind who rolls next.

That's a success with one raise, so looks like we still need three successes with our next two rolls

As Deacon's eyes meets Caroline's over the bottom drawer she smirks, but then subtly shakes her head. She probably shouldn't betray the blondes trust...though she was absolutely going to tease her later about what she suspected was in the drawer, untill the witch gave in and told her.

--------

As Tereze starts prepping the ritual it is clear to everyone Caroline is struggling to remain quiet. Shifting from foot to foot, looking anywhere but at the painful sight in front of her. She'd been told to behave when it came to other members methods of casting, but it was a struggle. Especially with the faint niggling thought at the back of her mind...if it wasn't done perfect it could go wrong. When magic went wrong it went really wrong... Her left had rubs her right arm as she waits for the Czech to finish.

When she is specifically called out she pouts slightly but nods. 'You're the boss....just don't go abusing it.' She tries to sound joking as she fights her apprehension, and starts to repeat after Tereza. While weird she could see..similarities. Enough to work with.

A montage of experimenting and researching, in Jemma's workshop--grinding material, flickering flames, the whole nine yards.(Success)Jemma, the findings are conclusive. The origins of the substance are fae: they contain properties that are magic, but of the natural word.

It appears the sap, and the roots, are a manifestation of fae magic. And yet, when the material is separated out there is clearly an element of human matter. As an intelligent witch, this could mean a lot of things to you; but it's clear you're dealing with something both mortal and not.
Feb 2, 2023 2:12 am
Cut back to Teresa's place......the lit candles gutter, then *puff* out. From the center of the circle, a crackle then a *pifffffff* can be heard as one end of the root catches fire, in a blue flame.

Chief Sarah Sweeney
Sarah's mouth slowly opens in surprise.

The shadows of the gathered witches play and dance on the walls, deeper than they should be, as Caroline finished her part...
OOC:
Unless my math is blowing it, we need ine more success... also, Tereza & Caroline take bennies for your drama please.

Jemma sighs. Fey! Nasty creatures. She composes a text message and send it to Caroline Shaw
The root and sap is of fey origin. Be carefull. <3 J

Then she starts a to-do list.
- Visit autoshop and get iron filings from lath
- Visit hill-billy-bob and have him make shotgun shell with iron filings

Sarah concentrates on her role in the ritual, adding her own concentration and energies.

OOC:
... in it's normal time, per our ruling!
The blue flame on the root flares with a *whoosh*. The shadows on the walls behind the circle spin, then leap from the wall landing in the center of the gathered witches and their police officer observer.

The shadows take on a blue tint, meld together, and form grainy projection:
[ +- ] Flickering Shadows Playing out a Grissly Scene
Chief Sarah Sweeney
Sweeney rips her hands away from those who she's joined with. "What the hell is this!" She stumbles back from the circle. "I can--I can feel the life draining into me, like that root is part of me." She retches.

Tereza, you can hold the shadow scene; manipulate it, zoom around, fast forward, or rewind.
Feb 3, 2023 6:46 pm
Tereza's previously closed eyes flutter open, though her pupils are rolled back, making her eyes appear completely white. "I see what happened and through me you will see," she announces, her voice not quite her own as the scene plays out in the middle of the circle. "We will watch them die! We will feel them die!"

The Czech witch is fully immersed in her ritual. She will restart the scene, creating as good a view of the (unharmed) faces of both victims as well as their attacker as she can with the shadow projection, then she will play the whole thing through until the end. If someone else asks for any specific details or moments to be highlighted or repeated, she will do so.
Feb 3, 2023 8:38 pm
Chief Sarah Sweeney
Sweeney spits on the floor then wipes her mouth with the back of her wrist. She turns and looks at Tereza, unsettled by the voice she hears.

She looks at the other gathered witches--a question plain on her face: is this normal!?
Feb 3, 2023 8:45 pm
Sarah attempts to smile reassuringly at the chief. She blanches as she watches the scene play out again. This kind of thing really upset her, but it was necessary to understand the nature of what they were facing.
