After the battle I slowly stroke Tulco's snout and watch the prisoners get rounded up. Upon hearing Dieter's instruction I take my position on one side of the prisoners.

Sheemish takes up position flanking the prisoners"it could be a lot worse mate, you could be held captive by much worse than us." A shadow crosses over Sheemish’s face. The sooner we get rid of this lot the better.

The starry wolf looks a the prisoners, hesitates at hearing they might be dragged along, and hopes it's just for intimidation again. Awie doesn't seem to oppose. She takes a position ahead of the wagon as Dieter suggests to keep an eye out for any more unexpected visitors they might come across...or that might come across them.

With a new wagon and six captives in tow, the group sets off once again for Beregost.

The off-road going is hard on the wagon, and several times the journey is held up by a wheel getting stuck in an unseen divot or finding an easier way around a series of hills. What's more, the sky begins to darken with the onset of evening.

From what the adventurers can tell, they're still several hours from Beregost. They can try to continue the difficult journey in the dark, stop and rest for the night, or make their way back to the road where the going is easier.

Anyone who wants to can make an ability check for more information. Some skills that might be helpful would be History, Survival, or even cartographer's tools.
Before Stella reverts to her normal self, her keen wolf senses pick up a familiar smell. Somewhere ahead of the party is running water. A lot of it.

Glancing up at the darkening sky and then about the area, Sheemish tries to discern what might be their best approach to the city. He gives a little whistle and stitch flutters out from under his cloak to dart ahead.

Stella, as a wolf, returns to the group. The stars had worn off a while ago, leaving her as a much more normal wolf. As she walks, her form becomes as stars again. She becomes translucent as her stars reshape themselves into a humanoid form, then she fades back into view.

She stretches and sighs. "Well, that was something!" she says. "I've never been not a half-elf before. Anyway..." she smiles.

"It smelt like there's a river up ahead. We might need to return to the road or find a place to ford," she explains, pulling out her old book in which she had scribed a map onto. It was rudimentary, but perhaps her past self had noted something useful here.

"Dieter. Runeson, she calls, holding up the map. "You've been here before right? Where might we be? Any suggestions?"

(Stella will cast guidance if either of them make an ability check. +1d4 to your roll.)

Aiwë smiles when Dieter looks to her. She gives a small salute to let him know he was doing a good job, then wraps Jeram's body in his bedroll and loads it into the cart. She leaves his feet poking out just a little so the other bandits could see them.

Aiwë beams at Stella. "That was incredible! Your parents will be so excited when they hear!"

As the others look around and think, Shelur watches the bandits. "Maybe we should just go back to the road. We won't be on it long, and we're not exactly going to be making a subtle entrance in Beregost, anyway."

Then she turns to Dieter. "I'm going to search them again, make sure they didn't try to be clever and pick up any rocks or something."

She leaves her weapons where they can't try to reach or disarm her of them—she's pretty sure she can take them in a wrestling match—and approaches. "Be good, so I don't have to be rough," she tells them, as chipper as asking their favourite song.

Between Sheemish and Stella, the group realizes that there is indeed a wide river ahead. According to Stella's map, there is but one crossing point: as part of the road south there's a stone bridge that allows passage. There may be other, shallower places for the wagon to cross, but searching for them in the coming night would be highly difficult.

The prisoners, who were happy for a break from walking the rough terrain, groan and get to their feet as Aiwë approaches. They let her search them, all but Marl. While she's checking a prisoner before him, Marl suddenly kicks out at her twice, first connecting with her knee, and then her stomach (Aiwe takes 6 bludgeoning damage).

"Get over here, girl!" His bound hands strain against the ropes, trying to grab at her clothes or arms.

Shelur obliges, swiftly pinning Marl's arms behind his head and forcing him to look at the cart where Jeram's body lies.

"What exactly are you trying to accomplish, Marl? Because Jeram was far more skilled than you, got a lot more loot than you, and paid a lot more for it. Jeram is out of chances, and you are on your. Last. One." Aiwë looks sternly at the other bandits as she says this. "So what do you want?"

To Dieter she mouths a single word. "Chill!"

Dieter stops in his tracks sword raised. He swiftly pivots away so the prisoners and other party members don’t see him looking so sheepish.
wow it’s like she knew I was going to loose my cool.

"You should try it more often!" Calliope remarks, as though recommending a hobby to someone, before circling around to watch Aiwe.

When Marl makes his move, a red star ripples into existence atop her hand, but she discards the burning projectile after a moment one she sees does indeed have it handled. It's a welcome change to see how capable this group might really be; she'd had her doubts after Aiwe mentioning how casually Dieter had died before, and Stella demonstrating they had no survival skills. Well, at least people-survival skills.

Still, if Marl continues to insist on being a problem, she'd personally have no issues with removing him.

Marl is entirely surprised by this young woman's strength and ability. As he stares painfully at Jeram's boots, the man stills and grunts, "Alright, I'm done. I'm done! Shoulda gone with the hobgoblins..."
Dec 29, 2022 8:54 pm
Aiwë doesn't release Marl. "These hobgoblins? She prestidigitates the seal or crest they found on the hobgoblins that had captured Sheemish onto the soles of Jeram's boots. "Tell me about them."
Dec 29, 2022 9:11 pm
Marl grits his teeth shut, but with Aiwe's tight grip on him and the gruesome scene before him, he starts to speak. "The Chill. They're a bunch of hobgoblin mercenaries. Real professional. It's them and the Blacktalons - mostly humans - who've been recruiting bandits and sending 'em out for iron. Thought I'd make some coin after losing my guard job." He manages to spit. "At least the hobgoblins woulda been able to take on you lot."

Stella giggles sheepishly. "Thanks. It was just, kind of, uh, instinct?" For a druid, was shapeshifting for the first time like a baby taking its first steps or babbling its first word? Huh.

Stella nods. "It's quite useful. And a bit fun."

"It sounds like that might be the only way in," Stella agrees, then thinks about the Flaming Fists, particularly the one that lead the trio they ran into earlier. "Though maybe we should get some rest so we can bring in the bandits to well-rested Flaming Fists, rather than ariving in the middle of the night."

When the bandit kicks at Aiwe and she quells the man, Stella stands warily some distance behind, taking notes.

The Chill — Hobgoblin Mercenaries. Especially dangerous.
Blacktalons — Mostly Humans (led by Taurgosz?)

Stella lowers her book and quill then cocks her head. "How did you lose your job?" she asks Marl.

Dieter snorts. He decides to watch Aiwë’s back in case any of the other prisoners revolt. He has his Longsword in one hand and his roll of rope."We should get moving or make camp boss it’s getting late."
Dec 30, 2022 1:21 am
"I vote we continue on" Sheemish says speaking to the group. "The prisoners will be easier to guard if they stay tired and moving. Though I think Aiwe has them thinking twice now," he says winking at Aiwe "I'd rather not give them any more opportunities. If we hit the main road we can get there faster. I don't think diverting further is a good idea. I'm happy to take first watch if that is what we decide to do."

Sheemish isn't going to press the group on this, just putting his thoughts out there

Marl's eyes move to seek out Dieter and Runeson. "Your boys over there got me fired. They probably took my pay, too, the dung-eating mongrels."
