Business in the Friendly Arm concluded, and joined by the eladrin Calliope, the group sets out into the midmorning light to make their way to the town of Beregost, and from there, to Nashkel and its iron mine. They avoid the south road and make their way instead through the Wood of Sharp Teeth—a forest far less foreboding than the Cloakwood they touched on earlier. The trees here give some cover from the sun, thankfully, and the party feels that it makes good time.

There is plenty of wildlife to be seen and heard, though all are skittish of the party. Squirrels chitter in the trees, deer flit through the trees, and at one point a black bear sticks its head up from a cluster of berries and quickly trundles off into the forest’s depths.

The journey almost feels like a leisurely hike through the forest, until the clatter of armor reminds the group of the world’s dangers.

"You there, halt!"

Three heavily armed and armored soldiers step through the brush. The middle one speaks: "By the authority of the Flaming Fist, I order you to state your names and business!"

The three soldiers come closer. "What would a blacksmith be doing out in these woods? There are roads for a reason, citizen."

One of them points at Aiwë's shield and speaks in a low woman's voice. "They've got Flaming Fist equipment, sir."

The third figure draws his sword with a squeal of metal and points it at Dieter, shouting. "Quit sneakin'! Get back in line!"

The lead soldier brings his own shield up and begins swinging his flail in an intimidating loop. "I'll give you but one chance to answer. It had better be one I like. How did you come by that shield?"
Dec 25, 2022 3:39 am
"Master Mirrorshade of the Friendly Arm Inn bought it from one of his guards on my behalf, as an apology for the assassin that tried to kill my cousins while we were in his establishment." Aiwë stands unaffronted in the face of the swinging mace. "The road from Candlekeep to the Inn was similarly dangerous for us. Besides, two of our party are druids. Is travelling off road that strange?"

"That blasted old gnome did what? He can't do that, it's against policy!" The lead soldier lulls the swing of his flail and fits the handle through a loop on his belt, then holds out an expectant hand for Aiwë's shield. "You may not be the bandits we've been hunting, but I still can't let you walk away with that equipment. Hand it over, citizen."

The man looks up to meet the eyes of the rest of the party, as though daring them not to comply. His hard gaze lingers on Dieter. "No funny business!"
Dec 25, 2022 2:44 pm
Aiwë doesn't move, but her eyes go wide and pleading. "Sir, I apologize, where I'm from mercenaries don't have uniforms, but now I see why I can't keep this. But as a mercenary, you understand the importance of a shield. If you take this now, you directly harm me and my party's ability to defend ourselves. We are stopping in Beregost where Deiter here is from." She gestures to the brightly coloured fighter.

"Please let me return it there, where I can purchase a replacement."

The lead soldier scoffs. "You should be glad I actually believe your story and don't string you up as a brigand. Give that shield here, and let this be a lesson to you that we of the Flaming Fist aren't to be taken lightly."
Dec 26, 2022 12:19 am
The woman mercenary clears her throat. "Perhaps we should pay them for the shield, so that they may at least replace it upon reaching Beregost."
Dec 26, 2022 12:20 am
The leader turns to her with a snort. "Pay them? For our own equipment? Bah!" He points at the woman who spoke up. "If it's that important to you, pay it from your own pocket. But know that you disgrace our name and what we stand for."
Dec 26, 2022 12:24 am
The woman nods stiffly. "Nothing is more important than what we stand for, sir."

Then she steps forward with her weapon sheathed, counts 10 gold coins out of a satchel, and offers them to Aiwë. "Go with peace, citizen."
Dec 26, 2022 12:29 am
Aiwë trades the shield with reluctance for the loss of protection, but with gratitude for the woman who was likely going to hear about this from her boss all day. "Thank you, soldier. What is your name?" And much, much more quietly, "And his name?"

"I am no one of consequence," she says as she accepts the shield. Her visor turns slightly towards her superior. "You should thank Officer Zodge for his understanding in this matter."

With that, she returns to the other soldiers and they resume their own trek through the forest.

"Come on, girl, let me sing your praises," Shelur huffs to herself with a smile as the mercenary group disappears into the trees.

Aiwë beams at Dieter. "Thank you! Hopefully it won't see any use before then." She laughs as she settles Dieter's shield on her arm.

"Oh, there will be no violence with them. The Captain is more likely to feel roughed up by his superior's opinion of him being damaged, anyway." Her chuckle becomes darker as she continues on their way.

Stella isn't sure how to react to the soldiers, so she leaves it to the others. She wonders what and how many bandits they might be looking for...they might run into them.

Once they start moving on, she steps beside Dieter. "Here" she hands the boy her new shield made from the Wood of False Teeth. "You're kind to give Aiwe yours, but you're the last one here we need to see without a shield."

She then steps in line with Calliope. "So...I'm no master of subterfuge, but I've started to think we're leaving trails. Telling people where we're from. Who we've met. What our names are. It sounds like you might have some experience. If we're trying to avoid assassins, what would you recommend we do?"
Dec 26, 2022 7:04 pm
The party continues its journey southward. In a few hours they leave the Wood of False Teeth behind, and enter the Western Heartlands' rolling plains. Every so often there are groups of trees for shaded breaks, but for the most part the party is exposed under the persistent sun and rising humidity.

According to what they know of the area, they need only continue south until they come to a wide river.

At one point, they can plainly see the road off to in the distance to the west, but they see no travelers there. Shortly afterward, the group makes for another copse of trees for a late lunch, only to find it already inhabited by a large handful of rough-looking men around a covered wagon.
Dec 26, 2022 7:04 pm
One of the men stands and greets the party, arms spread wide. "Wake up, boys! We've got customers!" The other men get to their feet and several of them spit into the dirt. All of them are armed, with an assortment of maces, swords, and crossbows between them.

"Now, no reason to look alarmed!" The man flashes a smile with crooked teeth. "My name's Jeram. My men here are honest businessfolk, here to protect myself in case anything were to happen out here." He gestures to the open plains all about. "Why, no one would even be able to hear me scream. Trust me, they're very good at what they do." One of the others chuckles and pats his loaded crossbow.

"So! Since we're all out here together, can I interest you in a business proposition?"

"You have already said it; so, stop doing that. Your home is of no consequence to a stranger, your friends don't matter to them, and giving your name to one you don't know you can trust is right out. Protect your name with your life." Calliope recites it almost like it's part of a basic instructional manual, something she's known for her entire life.

"Furthermore, assassins work best in dimness. To avoid them, you must either shine bright enough to dispel the shadows they hide in," she gestures to herself and Aiwe, "or you must obscure yourself in darkness so thick they cannot see, like... well, we can't tell you who it is, now can we?"

She elaborates, making grand sweeping gestures with her wings. "Aiwe draws the eye of many, performing and gaining quick popularity. And so long as there are eyes on her, assassins have difficulty getting close and acting. Her biggest danger is being alone, where none can watch over her. The same can be said for Lord Faunfable. On the other hand, one who goes by many names, none of which are truly his or at least are legally traceable, talk and act either from the shadows or as someone else. His greatest danger is being put in the spotlight, where all such disguises are eventually stripped away. You must be either the center of all attention, or devoid of attention." She bows, informational recital done for now.

"Anyways, you should probably pick up some illusion magic if you want to work on the obscuring approach. Otherwise, since you're never going to draw as much attention as us or Aiwe anyways, you should make sure you are ready to quickly react and kill an assassin the moment they start their attempt. Technically you're supposed to use obfuscation to prevent the assassins from coming after you at all in the first place, but it sounds like this group is past that chance already." Calliope shrugs.

Not everyone has a dad like hers, and it's also a lot harder to teach it than to know it. Still, why didn't Stella's parents teach her any of this at all? Seems careless.

Jeram's eyes and grin widen as he takes in Calliope's flowing feathers. "Ah, excuse my manners, my exquisite pigeon! Our deal is a good one! Most people take us up on it. There have been a couple, though, who didn't. But hey, Nob's got some new boots now! Look how happy that makes him." One of the other men scratches his neckbeard, then smiles and bobs his head up and down in an eager nod.

"So, to business! Today's offer is all your iron." He points to the ground between the two groups. "Go on, take it off and toss it in a pile there. Every bit of it, please, I like to be thorough. Gold, too, let's see that."

"Nonono, that's not you you do business at all," Calliope admonishes him. "You should lead with something the other party wants, not what you want out of them. At minimum, you need to begin by stating what good or service you're offering."

A flurry of feathers blow outwards occurs as her wings wrap around herself, and then suddenly she is in front of the man, tilting his chin up with a wingtip. (Calliope uses Autumn Fey Step; Jeram and the next closest guy need to make DC13 Wisdom saves or be charmed by me for 1 minute or until hurt by us).

"Speaking for ourself, we would be happy to part with every last drop of iron we have on us; really can't stand carrying it around for long." Calliope pretends to think for a moment, letting the dislike of iron turn wheels in their heads before dropping an even less subtle hint, hoping they're superstitious enough to be afraid of trifling with anything fey. "But in return, we would love to have the name of the person we're doing business with." She smiles just a little bit too widely.

"If that's too hard of a bargain, we're sure no one would blame you if you just let us and our friends on by."

As Calliope gives advice, Stella opens her new book and starts taking notes.

Stop telling people:
- Our hometown
- Our names

Detering assassins:
1. Stick together
2. Be the center of attention, or devoid of it.
3. Be quick to react to and kill...

She hesitates, then crosses out the word.

...and kill incapacitate

To-do:
1. Research illusion magic
2. Create alternate identifies?

She nods at her notes, sticks a sheet of waxpaper between the sheets and shuts her book. "Looks like brilliant advice," she tells Calliope. "Thank you! We'll have to discuss it with everyone when we get some time to rest...As for illusion magic, I might have seen some useful spells in Bently's spellbook..." she says flipping through pages. "But this shorthand is terrible. Or just...different. Either way, it'll take some time and coin to figure out."

Jeram blinks as the fluttering of soft feathers overcomes his senses. "...M'lady!" His reverent and awed tone reveals the success of Calliope's enchantment. "Forgive your mortal servants, we didn't realize who we were dealing with..." His eyes twinkle subtly with fey magic. "Of course we'll let you pass! Taurgosz for sure won't blame us, would he, boys..." The nearest bandit nods dumbly, his mind also ensnared by Calliope's influence.

With that, the rest of the group follow suit, nodding and murmuring the same. Several of them look confused at the unfolding events, however...

As the conversation ensues, Stella takes note of the name Jeram, as well as "Taurgosz" as a potential higher-up they report to. She also tries to scratch down brief descriptions of each man present and the bandit camp's location.

Stella looks to Aiwe, looking for some kind of direction, but sees hesitancy. Despite the opportunity to leave, the bard looked ready to fight, but yet hesitant to do so.

Stella looks at the men and their weapons. And at the bandit named Nob's "new boots". It was an assumption that they killed the man, but with their demeanor, and the way they talked...it seemed probable. If not a life, then a tenday's wages or more. They could have belonged been someone's husband or son. Or father.

"The courageous fear what must be feared—and often act contrary," Grandpa Arannis' words echo again in her mind.

Her Papa's words follow: "Whether we act or do not, someone suffers," Zenithral's voice says. "Let it be us who have a greater capacity for it."

The stars in Stella's eyes flicker orange, piercing her cloudy mind. "We have to do something," she whispers sharply to the others nearby, trying not to move her mouth too much. "If those Flaming Fists with their clanking armor come this way, they could get ambushed. We could tell the Fists in Berregost where we saw these, but they'll have moved on. And if anyone else they come across refuses their 'deal'..."

She lets the statement hang in the air.

Her eyes dim slightly. "...unless you think we'd...you know...die..."

Aiwë takes in the situation with a quick glance. The majority of the bandits have worn equipment and little armor.

Two of the burlier ones have battered shields. She gets the feeling that those two have seen more bar room brawls than battles.

Jeram, however, is in a league of his own. He comfortably sports half-plate that, while not in mint condition, seems to have held true in more than a few scuffles. He also is the only one with a true longsword, accompanied by a shorter, broader sword. A man that fights wielding two weapons is either an idiot, or an expert. His equipment is all well cared for.

What's more, Jeram seems comfortable leading this band, accustomed to giving orders and seeing them carried out. His bearing generally speaks more mercenary than rag-tag bandit.

Fighting is risky. Things can always go south quickly in a battle. However, Aiwë recognizes that her party has talented men-at-arms and spellcasters, and magic properly placed can turn the tide of any battle.

If she and her friends can't take on these bandits, what other poor passersby have suffered or will suffer at their hands?

Far away from Icewind Dale, with her commander uncle gone, one cousin short and Stella anxious from their run-ins with assassins, Shelur isn't sure what to do. When Stella speaks and Dieter looks to her for her move, Aiwë understands her new environment.

And her new little group, just like the old, doesn't leave others to danger.

"This one is a snake, not a hydra," she tells her friends. She beats her drum and stares down Jeram with a large-toothed snarl. "Cut off its head!" She focuses her will on the bandit, trying to pin him down with her stare, but the man proves as slippery as the snake she named him.

"Wait...Cut off it's---?! Death?!" she stammers suddenly panicked. This was not what she had in mind. "Ugh!!" she scowls, unslinging her bow.

Her eyes alight and her form and bow darken and becomes speckled with stars. If they took out the leader of the bunch, though, perhaps the rest would surrender.

She draws and fires a shimmering arrow skimming across Jarem's arm, then she grits her teeth and fires another. This one shines brighter, almost too bright, obscuring her vision as Dieter charges between them.

She couldn't let anyone die unnecessarily, friend or foe. Her determination and focus sharpen. She strafes behind a tree to get cover and a better shot. The radiant bolt strikes into Jarem's leg, then dissipates, causing stars to sparkle from him through the openings and weaker joints in his armor.

Initially caught off guard by the party's sudden rush, the eladrin is quick to adapt. From where she stands in from of Jeram, she gives a bow as Dieter and Runeson close in on either side of him.

"Unfortunately, banditry is bad for any actual business, so we'll be confiscating your goods. And your life." Calliope winks, and blows a kiss that blossoms into a roaring inferno, engulfing Jeram in flames that narrowly avoid burning the fighters to his sides. Leaping forward he spreads his arms wide and then slams them together in a thunderous clap gestured at the three enemies in front. Round 1 Summary

Weapons and battle cries ring from both sides as heroes and bandits clash!

A volley of bolts comes whistling in from the bandit archers, and both Aiwe and Imoen find themselves taking stinging hits (Aiwe takes 6 piercing damage, and Imoen takes 7).

Dieter immediately leaps upon Jeram, raining heavy blows down on the bandit leader, even as Runeson comes barreling in from the side. To Jeram's credit, even as confused as he is he manages to whip out his swords and block Dieter's first swing, then retaliate with a nasty cut on the side of Dieter's face (Dieter takes 8 slashing damage). He might have been able to press the attack further, but two brilliant arrows from Stella find their mark, and Dieter presses in to score a hit of his own. Even still, Jeram might have lived to fight another day, but Runeson's smite-fueled warhammer takes him in the shoulder, crunching through armor and bone in a blast of searing light!

Jeram limps backward, one arm hanging uselessly at his side and screaming for help from the two burly men, when Calliope's fiery spell ignites the air, severely burning all three. A moment later, Sheemish's own thunderous magic slams home, staggering the two thugs and flinging Jeram's slashed, smashed, pierced, and charred corpse through the air to land before the archers.

The two thugs find themselves severely wounded and facing down a nearly uninjured party, and the archers all seem to have gone pale at the sight of their leader's body. All of the bandits throw down their weapons, and the four archers take off running in separate directions.

"Oh." Stella relaxes, slightly embarrassed. She wasn't sure about Dieter, but she trusts Aiwë and drawing another arrow.

She sees Jarem go down and the archers start to flee. Driven by adrenaline and the unexpected thrill of cosmic energy coursing through her, instincts drive the druidic archer to give chase.

Sprinting on two legs, then suddenly dropping down to all fours, the stars of her body realign forming a fierce wolf made of the night sky. A starry bow hovers above this new creature and fires a radiant arrow at the nearest archer as she gives pursuit.

The bandit ahead of Stella cries out in pain when her radiant arrow strikes true. He glances back to see her fast approaching in her starry wolf form, and collapses to cower in the grass, arms protectively surrounding his head.

"P-please don't eat me!"

Meanwhile, Dieter finds that he knows one of the thugs: Marl, the caravan guard fired by Koveras on the way to Candlekeep for messing with Runeson.

Recognition dawns in Marl's eyes at the same time. "You!" he spits. He tries to get up, but quickly thinks better of it with Dieter's sword right there. He keeps up a stream of curses as he's searched.

Dieter finds a silver dagger and a small coin purse on the man. The other thug has nothing of note.

The star-speckled wolf hesitates, then shakes her head. She bites his shirt and tries to lift him to his feet and push him back to the party like she had with the other archer.

The valuables could be possibly returned to their owners, or prove useful if not, but bribery wasn't going to let this bandit continue his trade.

She just...hoped they'd be treated fairly by the Flaming Fists in Beregost.

As the return, the adrenaline starts to fade and Stella realizes just how bizarre she was right now.

She had wondered what it would feel like to shapechange into a beast like her mother did, let alone one mixed with the stars. Her muscles felt so powerful, and everything looked like it had a dark blue hue to it, like a night sky. She could see, hear, and smell so much! Rustling leaves, footsteps and snapping twigs, the smell of tasty flesh.

She stops suddenly and shakes her head again, shocked and slightly disturbed by the thought, then continues prodding the bandit.

Seems like she gained the instincts of a wolf too.

In short order the party has six captive bandits tied up back in the copse of trees. Some of the prisoners seem grateful to be alive. Others seem afraid that they might not be alive much longer. Marl glowers darkly at everyone, but especially at Dieter and Runeson.

The party also finds the covered wagon full of iron - some weapons, some tools, a few other trinkets, scattered bits of armor, a field plow, and a few barrels of iron ore. No doubt it's all from travelers on the nearby road.
Dec 29, 2022 3:25 am
"Let’s get this wagon loaded up. I want these prisoners tied in line behind the cart. If they fall they’ll be dragged" dieter says directing the last bit at the prisoners before turning and giving a little wink at Imoen "Marl you’ll be up at the front of the line where I can keep an eye on you. Stella you could be useful up ahead in that wolf form of yours. The rest of us need to bracket the prisoners and the cart." Dieter barks out orders directing the crowd when he finishes he then looks to Aiwë for approval and further guidance.
Dec 29, 2022 4:24 am
After the battle I slowly stroke Tulco's snout and watch the prisoners get rounded up. Upon hearing Dieter's instruction I take my position on one side of the prisoners.

The starry wolf looks a the prisoners, hesitates at hearing they might be dragged along, and hopes it's just for intimidation again. Awie doesn't seem to oppose. With a new wagon and six captives in tow, the group sets off once again for Beregost.

The off-road going is hard on the wagon, and several times the journey is held up by a wheel getting stuck in an unseen divot or finding an easier way around a series of hills. What's more, the sky begins to darken with the onset of evening.

From what the adventurers can tell, they're still several hours from Beregost. They can try to continue the difficult journey in the dark, stop and rest for the night, or make their way back to the road where the going is easier.

Stella, as a wolf, returns to the group. The stars had worn off a while ago, leaving her as a much more normal wolf. As she walks, her form becomes as stars again. She becomes translucent as her stars reshape themselves into a humanoid form, then she fades back into view.

She stretches and sighs. "Well, that was something!" she says. "I've never been not a half-elf before. Anyway..." she smiles.

"It smelt like there's a river up ahead. We might need to return to the road or find a place to ford," she explains, pulling out her old book in which she had scribed a map onto. It was rudimentary, but perhaps her past self had noted something useful here.

"Dieter. Runeson, she calls, holding up the map. "You've been here before right? Where might we be? Any suggestions?"

Aiwë smiles when Dieter looks to her. She gives a small salute to let him know he was doing a good job, then wraps Jeram's body in his bedroll and loads it into the cart. She leaves his feet poking out just a little so the other bandits could see them.

Aiwë beams at Stella. "That was incredible! Your parents will be so excited when they hear!"

As the others look around and think, Shelur watches the bandits. "Maybe we should just go back to the road. We won't be on it long, and we're not exactly going to be making a subtle entrance in Beregost, anyway."

Then she turns to Dieter. "I'm going to search them again, make sure they didn't try to be clever and pick up any rocks or something."

She leaves her weapons where they can't try to reach or disarm her of them—she's pretty sure she can take them in a wrestling match—and approaches. "Be good, so I don't have to be rough," she tells them, as chipper as asking their favourite song.

Between Sheemish and Stella, the group realizes that there is indeed a wide river ahead. According to Stella's map, there is but one crossing point: as part of the road south there's a stone bridge that allows passage. There may be other, shallower places for the wagon to cross, but searching for them in the coming night would be highly difficult.

The prisoners, who were happy for a break from walking the rough terrain, groan and get to their feet as Aiwë approaches. They let her search them, all but Marl. "What exactly are you trying to accomplish, Marl? Because Jeram was far more skilled than you, got a lot more loot than you, and paid a lot more for it. Jeram is out of chances, and you are on your. Last. One." Aiwë looks sternly at the other bandits as she says this. "So what do you want?"

When Marl makes his move, a red star ripples into existence atop her hand, but she discards the burning projectile after a moment one she sees does indeed have it handled. It's a welcome change to see how capable this group might really be; she'd had her doubts after Aiwe mentioning how casually Dieter had died before, and Stella demonstrating they had no survival skills. Well, at least people-survival skills.

Still, if Marl continues to insist on being a problem, she'd personally have no issues with removing him.

Marl is entirely surprised by this young woman's strength and ability. As he stares painfully at Jeram's boots, the man stills and grunts, "Alright, I'm done. I'm done! Shoulda gone with the hobgoblins..."

Marl grits his teeth shut, but with Aiwe's tight grip on him and the gruesome scene before him, he starts to speak. "The Chill. They're a bunch of hobgoblin mercenaries. Real professional. It's them and the Blacktalons - mostly humans - who've been recruiting bandits and sending 'em out for iron. Thought I'd make some coin after losing my guard job." He manages to spit. "Though maybe we should get some rest so we can bring in the bandits to well-rested Flaming Fists, rather than ariving in the middle of the night."

When the bandit kicks at Aiwe and she quells the man, Stella stands warily some distance behind, taking notes.

After some time deliberating, the party decides to move to the road and from there continue on south across the river and on to Beregost.

Being on the road again brings back memories of fleeing in the night, especially with the shadows stretching long. Still, they press on, and encounter nobody else until they reach the bridge.

The bridge itself is no awe-inspiring sight, but the party can't help but feel at least some relief when they find it occupied by a squad of Flaming Fist mercenaries. The armored men and women hold tall pole-lanterns to hold back night's shadows, and are currently speaking with what appears to be a merchant's caravan - three wagons pulled by oxen. From the look of things, the Flaming Fist soldiers seem to be interrogating the merchant and his crew, many of whom are hooded against the evening's growing chill.

An attentive soldier sees the party coming, and waves them forward.

"Come forward and be counted, please! We're looking for a fugitive, and so must examine all who cross the bridge." The man lifts his lantern higher, squinting, then calls back to the main group of soldiers. "We've got men bound up like prisoners over here!"

One hand on his longsword, the soldier again speaks to the party. "Why do you have these men tied up? Be they slaves of yours?" There is a hard edge to his voice as he asks the questions.

"Is there a problem? We should be watching the roads in case there are any bandits that need being dealt with" Dieter says appearing from the other side, he lets those last few words hand in the air. "I've never quite understood the need for honor-defending. Shouldn't one's honor be able to defend itself?" She shrugs. "And we don't know he's a murderer. It's just...highly likely."

She shakes her head and looks up at the darkening sky, searching for stars appearing. "I'm not defending his actions, nor disparaging yours, by the way—at least I'm not trying to. I'm just...trying to figure out why people do what they do. Where the lines of knowledge, assumption, justice, and mercy, are all supposed to intersect. At what point can one be confident that engaging in conflict will actually reduce overall suffering?'"

The soldier motions for the party to continue on towards the bridge, where more raised lanterns shine. It seems that each person in the merchant's caravan is being inspected, just as the party was.

As they pass the caravan and the ongoing interrogations, Calliope and Stella notice one of the hooded members of the caravan begin slipping into the darkness, apparently unnoticed by the interrogating soldiers. The figure is slender and moves with light steps. A woman? Or possibly an elf?
Dec 30, 2022 7:27 pm
"What are they up to?" Stella murmurs. Why was everyone they've come across except Bently so shady?! Looking over her shoulder, she waves some fingers.

Hoohooooo!! The sharp cry of a loud, possibly sick owl comes from the trees past the figure.
(Stella casts Minor Illusion)

Hopefully that would draw the attention of the guards in that direction and cause them to notice the escaping figure. She did not want to be ambushed again.

The hooded figure doesn't startle at the sound, but does turn sharply to look in the direction of the noise... and accidentally steps on a fallen tree branch.

SNAP!!

Between the illusory owl sound and the snapping of twigs, the guards immediately look in that direction and spot the figure. "You there, halt!" With a half-dozen crossbows pointed its way, the figure freezes. "Stay where you are! Raise your hands!"

Slowly the figure lifts its arms, and as it does so, the sleeves fall back to reveal silvery-black hands and delicate fingers. Then there's a quick, intricate gesture, and a magical word: "Oloth!"

The figure vanishes as a cloud of darkness fills the air around it. Even those members of the party accustomed to the dark can't penetrate it with their darkvision. Crossbows click and bolts whirl into the growing cloud as Flaming Fist soldiers cry out. Several of the merchant's party scream and begin to run, causing even more chaos as other guards try to keep them in line.

The two horses pulling the party's wagon of iron, unsettled by the events, begin to stomp their hooves and pull at their harness, nickering all the while.
Dec 30, 2022 8:37 pm
Stella secretly celebrates the soldiers noticing the figure, then watches horrified as chaos ensues.

So much for being clever...

"They're probably escaping out the back of the darkness!" Stella reasons to the other, probably more competent, party members, in case any of them want to help. Anything else she tried would probably just make things worse at this point.

She rushes to the front of the wagon to try and calm the horses in a tongue that enlightens their minds. "Steady there! It's just a bit of...trouble. But they're handling it!" I hope.

(Stella casts Speak with Animals.)

Aiwë's eyes narrow at the outcry. When she had asked the guard if the fugitive was dangerous, he only said the fugitive was drow, like nothing else mattered. Might have well said the fugitive was orcish.

As soon as the veil of darkness goes up, Calliope runs forward to get closer to the cloud. "Give us a lift, hmm?" she whispers to the air around her, and it responds, catching her flared wings and lifting her up above the black cloud for at least a few moments. (Calliope casts Updraft).

From up here, it doesn't matter where the drow fugitive is. If they're using the sphere to cover an escape, she'll see which direction they leave it; and if they stay in the cloud much longer, they'll be hit by a stray arrow and lose concentration on the darkness itself. As a bit of an afterthought, a small bird of fire coalesces onto Calliope's shoulder up in the sky. If this ends up being a hunt, the more hunters the merrier.

The horses calm quickly under Stella's care. "Scared... Scared... Yes. Steady."

Meanwhile, a female voice speaking Elvish in an unfamiliar accent comes from the darkness: "I have done nothing! I-" Another crossbow bolt flies into the cloud and the voice grunts and cuts off.

A moment later the darkness dissipates, and soldiers rush in with spears and swords, though they look about confused when they find no one there. From her vantage in the air above, Calliope can't see any trace of the drow... but her keen ears hear pained breathing coming from beneath the nearest wagon.
Dec 30, 2022 10:45 pm
Aiwë decides. She turns to bang her club against her shield to remind their prisoners that this is not the time to escape, and beneath the guise with her back to the mercenaries she casts a spell.

"You are fools to hunt a Drow in the night!" The drow woman laughs distantly from a direction Aiwë is pretty sure she didn't actually go. "I am the shadows!"

Aiwë casts Minor Illusion to mislead the Flaming Fists as far away from them as possible.

Calliope is about to reveal the position of the drow, when a few things occur to her in sequence, thanks to Aiwe's cry and further attempts to distract.
Quote:
Cousin!" she calls in Elvish. "Quickly, why are you hunted?"
First, that Aiwe is probably too quick to call potential enemies a part of her family. Her welcoming nature could definitely put her in danger.

Secondly, that she knows of someone who had a similar problem; her mom has told her in that odd mix of fondness and complete exasperation of Flureth's escapades involving Raven, the current Queen of the Rats of Waterdeep. Those impulsive decisions had ultimately led to someone being saved, a decent person who had been just caught and trapped with the wrong crowd, and by extension helped improve Waterdeep.

Sure, Raven was basically always on the wrong side of the law, but... so was her dad and his previous apprentice a fairly decent amount of the time too. If her dad had taught her anything, it was that sometimes something illegal was what needed to be done. Or what was right. And what also happened to be more exciting sometimes.

And thirdly and finally, that wherever the decision she was about to make leads, it'll hopefully be right, and will certainly be more interesting than the alternative.

Calliope drifts towards the ground, readying herself to rapidly make use of yet more magic. She mentally commands the firebird to stay in the air above the caravan.

A whisper, and her wings and body drip with a dark translucency. A twist of a hand, and with unusual restraint, she steps though space without her typical fare of flurrying feathers.

Directly beneath the same wagon as the drow.

A quiet, Elvish whisper asks, "Hiya! Care to tell us what you're hiding for?"

(Calliope casts Pass Without Trace, and then uses Autumn Fey Step to teleport and hide beneath the wagon. Drow Fugitive must make a DC13 Wis save or be charmed. She is also hiding and currently including the drow in her choice of creatures for Pass Without Trace to affect).

The confused soldiers whirl about at the sound of Aiwe's illusory voice, and several of them go charging off in that direction. A few more of the Flaming Fist mercenaries shudder, obviously afraid of this dark elf witch or whatever she may be.

Not even Marl has anything to say back to Sheemish after his intimidating display. The bandit prisoners all stand quietly, though their eyes dart around trying to make sense of the confusing scene.
Dec 31, 2022 3:05 am
Calliope finds the drow woman lying on her back. A crossbow bolt protrudes from just below her collarbone, visibly quivering with every labored breath. Still, for all her obvious pain, the dark elf manages to pull a long dagger and point its tip toward Calliope. She relaxes slightly at the eladrin's greeting.

"You... you saw. These rivven are mad! They're going to kill me for nothing more than the color of my skin. I need to-" She bites her lip to stifle a groan, then pulls the bolt free and casts it aside. Working quickly, she puts a hand on the wound and whispers another spell. Whatever the spell's effects, it seems to have eased her pain somewhat.

The drow looks over to Calliope again, white hair sweaty beneath her hood. "What are you about? What do you want?" Again, her accent is foreign, and every so often she uses words Calliope isn't familiar with.
Dec 31, 2022 3:22 am
Dieter remains motionless near the prisoners. This drow is none of his concern nor does he understand the silky words coming from Aiwë’s mouth. What he does understand is the gross disregard for crossbow safety and holds his shield close as a result.

"We are saving you right now, so long as you explain everything to us when we're out of here. You can hide among the rest of our group in plain sight so long as you're near us. Sneak out with us now, and we'll decide if we regret it later. If you run off, well, you're only proving their point, and we'll go back to playing cat and mouse." Calliope sounds quite cheerful relaying the slightly-mad plan and the implied consequences for lying or not following it.

Having successfully not really answered the woman's questions, Calliope gets ready to withdraw from underneath the wagon to stealthily rejoin the party amid the chaos with her new half-acquaintance in tow. If she's lying about having done anything wrong, they can evidently deal with her in her current state anyways, if a single lucky bolt is enough to bring her that low.

The drow woman weighs the offer only briefly. "You would do this for an unknown drow...? Very well. Asanque." From what Calliope can tell, the dark elf agrees to the terms.

Timing their movements, and with Calliope's spell cloaking them, the eladrin and drow make it back to the party without being accosted by any of the soldiers still running about. Having already been given permission to leave, the group gets the horses and wagon moving across the bridge and toward Beregost.

After they've left the chaos and lights behind, the drow woman raises lowers her hood and shakes out her silvery-white hair. Speaking in Common, she says, "I thank you for the... kindness... you've shown." She seems to be testing out the word 'kindness', as though it represents an idea unfamiliar to her. "Those men, those... iblith cared not to learn anything of me. I was careless for but a moment, and someone saw my hands. They've been after me for days."

One hand massages her wound and she speaks the words of another spell, closing and healing her skin.

"Now that I am safe, I will depart and trouble you no more." She glances subtly at those listening. "Assuming your benevolence doesn't hide any other motives..."

"Mig'norr," Aiwë says, thumping her chest with a large-toothed grin. "I'm Shelur. I'm too much elf for much more than a look sideways, but most of my tribe have been in your shoes at least once in their life."

"This lot are in ropes because they attacked and tried to rob us," she gestures at the bandits, "but you are of course free to go. But..." She looks the woman over. "Do you have money? Food? What's your plan from here?"
Dec 31, 2022 7:58 pm

"Those are Orcish words... from the mouth of a darthiir - forgive me, from the mouth of an elf." The woman seems troubled by this revelation. Or, at the very least, it's prompting much thought. "And prisoners, when you obviously could have just slain them." She looks around at the group again, this time with less suspicion and more appreciation.

"I am not without means, so long as I am careful. I will not make such a mistake again." For the first time, she smiles. "But I thank you. Perhaps one day we will meet again."
Dec 31, 2022 8:15 pm

Stella remains quiet, embarrassed at the chaos she caused, but grateful that Calliope was able to handle it so well. I guess not all cloaked figures have mal intent...

Perhaps there was a small something she could try to do, though.

Stella walks over to a bush and whispers in druidic. "May the Forest Firbolg find you in good health."
(Stella casts Goodberry)

She smiled as a handful of red berries grow before her eyes, then picks them berries and hands a couple to the drow.

"Goodberries," she says. "Eat one tonight, one tomorrow night, and they'll keep you filled for a day or two." She shrugs. "Though I don't blame you if you're skeptical and don't want to eat them."

The drow accepts the magical berries with a graceful incline of her head. "I rarely come across surface-dwellers who treat me as well as your group."

She moves to depart, then hesitates, calling over her shoulder: "My name is Viconia DeVir. May the shadows guide and keep you, and loss ever bring you strength."

Then she melts into the night, and even those with darkvision have difficulty seeing her leave.

On their own once more, with wagon and prisoners, the party moves south along the Coast Way.

An hour or so later, with weary feet, they arrive at the town of Beregost.

OOC:
The story picks up here after a night's stay in Beregost.
The party sets out from Beregost with Tulco and the other two horses liberated from the bandits. From here, the journey continues south to Nashkel and its iron mine.

Once again the party is faced with the choice of sticking to the established Coast Way road, or braving the wilds. From here, the party can see the Cloudpeak Mountains on the horizon, and are approaching the first foothills. This stretch of the journey looks as though it will be through significantly rougher terrain than yesterday's. Still, if the party makes good time, they should be able to reach Nashkel by evening.
Jan 10, 2023 4:31 am
"If you want to avoid being assassinated, we recommend staying on the road during the day. The brighter and more open, the easier time you'll have seeing them coming." Calliope walks backwards along the path as the party leaves the town, imparting her (possibly unasked-for) wisdom to the rest of the party.

"Plus, roads are nicer to walk on, in our opinion."

Jan 10, 2023 5:12 pm
I nod in agreement. "That makes sense."
Jan 10, 2023 8:15 pm
Decision made, the party sticks to the Coast Way as they travel south. The road isn't smooth, by any means, but it's considerably easier than the increasingly rocky terrain on either side. Though the sun is as warm as ever this time of year, the sight of the snow-capped Cloud Peaks ahead serves as a reminder of Icewind Dale and its Spine of the World mountains. As the wind picks up, those from the Frozen North can almost feel their home's chill wind.

They encounter no trouble along the road, but at one point find a broken, sacked wagon on the side of the road; no doubt the work of bandits. There are several wolves gnawing at a pair of humanoid corpses, but they flee as the party draws close.

The trip to Nashkel takes most of the day, but they arrive in the frontier mining town well before nightfall.

"Thankfully no, we haven't been targeted ever ourself, but our dad made sure to teach us the theory, and we've been around people on both sides of the equation." A normal admission to make, to be sure.

At the second question, Calli raises an eyebrow and gestures inward at herself, smiling wryly. "'Our' as in, us? Who else would we be referring to?"

"Maybe it's not intuitive for you," she concedes, "but it'd be clear when someone's referring to a group versus theirself if you'd grown up with it."

Jan 11, 2023 6:22 am
"I always thought she was referring to her and her fire spirit," Stella remarks, flipping through pages of her old tome and scribbling notes in her new one. She had books precariously balancing on one arm.

It looked like she was making a star chart, but the stars were labeled with names, events, and concepts with strokes connecting them. Her eyes flickered across the page like excited, but perplexed fireflies, though her face was calm.

Arranis Saki Ilmadia Errestor Zenithral Stella
Alalla Erevain Aiwe
Suffering Sacrifice Honor Liberty War Rage Survival Vigil
Druid Archer Wizard Scholar Herbalist Healer Musician Daughter
Ilmater Pelor Torm Waukeen Belhifet Harmony Valiance
Good Evil Law Chaos Life Death

Who did she want to be?

Labels are so limiting, but how else do you portray ideas? Music...Art...Stories...those can be more expressive...So powerful too! She adds Power to the page and drawing a line to Aiwe. She then starts adding her other companion's names as well.

Wirrow Calliope Sheemish Runeson Imoen Dieter

But the arts are still imprecise. But how precise did she need? Can anything be completely precise? Or is it all relative to experience, perspective, and scope...? Distance between stars on a map might be millions of miles in reality...

She continues this all the way to Nashkel.

Calliope claps her hands together lightly. "Except Dad; if you knew him, you'd think he was just as suited to be an 'us' as well! Moving to a new place, it helps to have some normalcy, you know?"

It's about mid-morning when the party sets out from Nashkel and heads westward, hopefully to catch up with Minsc and help him rescue his ward, the wychlaran Dynaheir. The sky is clear and blue, and fresh breezes from the Snow Peaks help to ease the growing heat of the summer sun.

"Not a wizard like this...Polymorph, Fireball...who knows what other spells he knows? Scrying?" she says, growing worried.

She closes her eyes and takes a deep breath. No, she could do this. She pulls out her old tome and begins flipping its pages, checking notes.

"If we can blind, silence, and bind him, he'll be helpless," he says tapping the page. "When we camp tonight, I think I can figure out a spell to block vision, and one to counter invisibility, if he has it."

"He'll probably be able to dispel any magic we use, though, if we can't do anything about his mouth and hands...A paralysis spell might work," she says, glancing at Aiwë. "He's probably trained against mind-altering spells like that, though. Silencing magic and tackling him down might be more reliable...do you have any spells like that, Aiwë? A silencing spell, I mean. I know all of you can handle the tackling part..." she says gesturing to everyone but Imoen.

She turns to Dieter growing more confident, and points at him. "You're trained to disarm, right? If he has a spellcasting focus in hand, that should be your main focus. He can't cast his strongest spells without it."

She hands Imoen the wand of magic missiles. "He'll probably be able to block it, but it could be useful to bait out a reaction and prevent him from countering our other spells, or for distracting him from ongoing spells he's focused on."`

"Except..." she huffs. "There are going to be other assassins, aren't there...How much do you want to bet Shar-Teel will be among them?" she asks rhetorically, glancing towards Dieter. "Still...he might be the biggest threat."

"Magic to silence?" Aiwë drums her fingers on her hip, her first rhythm since leaving the town. She glances at Sheemish with a slight frown, then looks back to Stella quickly with a bright smile. "I can do that." There might be a slight emphasis on 'can.'
Mar 16, 2023 4:24 pm
"Well done, Stella" Dieter says with praise "that was a very comprehensive plan. I want you to think of a few back up plans and some things that he might try aswell. Once you do let us know what our individual objectives will be but most importantly what your intent is so that if the plan or our communication falls apart we can act with autonomy following your intent. I heard this quote one time "One who sets the entire army in motion to chase an advantage will not attain it."
Mar 16, 2023 8:37 pm
Stella nods, turning to Dieter. "The intention is to disable him, then take him out."

She shows him her tome as if he could understand the web of scribbles and symbols. "Most spells, especially powerful ones like Fireball and Polymorph, and defensive ones like Shield rely on verbal components. If he can't speak, he can't cast them, she explains. "A few work with just gestures and material components or a spellcasting focus like his staff, however, so it's important to disarm him too. If Aiwe can't keep him silenced, disarming him is still high-priority."

"If that fails, I can block his sight. That doesn't do much against explosions but can keep him from casting on specific individuals."

She looks to Aiwe. "If you're going to be silencing him, you'll need to keep focus, and that means staying out of harm's way. That means at range. I know that's not your preferred element, but it'd be the most reliable way to keep him disabled. Dieter, can you give her that enhanced bow from the mines?" She starts taking out some arrows from her quiver to hand to Aiwe, then realizes the bard doesn't have a quiver. Perhaps they could make a makeshift one.

"Actually, Imoen, your precision with the bow is amazing. Let's give that wand to Aiwe."

She continues, finger to her lips. "I imagine, your spell, Aiwe, creates a stationary area? In that case, we'll need to keep him there.

"Sheemish, how good are you at wrestling with those gauntlets of yours? I can prepare a spell to help hold him in place too. If he escapes us both, we'll need one of you, Dieter or Runeson, to grab him. You'd need to drop your weapon, but again, if he hits us with a Fireball or Cone of Cold, we'll be as good as dead..." she says grimly.

"This is all assuming he's the biggest threat, which I think he might be. Once he's silenced, we focus fire on him. After he's down, then we worry about the other assassins. Er...I think..."

She exhales sharply, eye stars flittering a calculating green.

Sheemish thinks alloud to the others. "I've made a few adjustements to my armor as well that might absorb some of a spell he casts. If it comes down to ranged attacks though, would lightning or . . . acid damage be preferable to use on a mage?" Sheemish doesn't look at anyone in particular during this last question.

Imoen's eyes light up as the magical bow is put into her hands. "Oh! Oh! Has it been named? Can I name it? How about Serendipity? Dipity for short. Or maybe just Dippy. Or Seren. Serah? Hmm... I've never used such a large bow before, but it can't be that different, right?" She gives the bowstring an experimental tug and then winces. "Oh... Um. It's a bit hard to pull. I'm not sure I can use it reliably in a fight. Not without a lot of practice..."

As the group discusses combat theory, Dieter notices some prominent boot tracks. They're deep enough that they must have come from a large man, which Minsc is. Some small, nibbled sunflower seed casings dropped nearby are certainly from Boo.

They're on the right track.

As they continue westward, they keep the mountain range on their left and skirt around it, heading towards the coast. Such a trip might have taken a day or two on foot, but with the help of Tulco and the other horses (and Stella taking equine form on occasion), the group makes good time, following the periodic signs of Minsc's passage.

It's been several hours when they come across the aftermath of a battle.

There are two gnoll corpses. The rugged, hairy hyena-folk have overly long limbs and bestial features. Dirty hide armor covers spotted tufts of fur. Standing straight, each gnoll might have been some 7 feet tall in life. Now, they lie in their blood, toothy mouths hanging open.

"vile monsters" Dieter says. He doesn’t get close to the corpses and periodically switches between not being able to look at them and unable to look away. He decides to pull security and watch for interlopers. "Keep an eye out they’re most likely more"

"You have to use your back muscles Imoen. And take a stance like this" Dieter says demonstrating the proper stance to put tension in your legs and back. Raising an imaginary bow up then lowering it while he draws. Dieter leans into the bow and releases his trigger finger as if to fire. "With a long bow your whole body becomes part of the weapon. This isn’t a hunting bow, a long bow is a weapon of war designed to punch through armour and kill your enemy."

Imoen watches Dieter's martial demonstration with wide eyes. "Yeah sure, just, you know, do that." She hands the bow off to Dieter. "Maybe you should be the one to shoot the wizard."
Mar 19, 2023 1:09 am
A close examination of their wounds show broad slashing marks that Dieter recognizes as coming from a greatsword swung with considerable strength of arm. One of the gnolls, cleaved nearly in half from a tremendous blow, lies near a blood-spattered tree that's missing a chunk of wood from its trunk.

There are signs of other injury in the area as well; a couple of gnoll arrows snapped in two, their heads and shafts bloodied. Whoever was struck by them must have taken some time to remove them and leave them in a small pile by a fallen log.

Carcabob says:
Stella gasps and puts a hand to her mouth, seeing Sheemish's scale- and acid-ridden arm.

"They abducted you and tried to... turn you into a half dragon?" she guessed, abhorred.

His story made sense. She would have never guessed the guantlets were there to *hide* something.

She listens and nods along, eye stars a searching cyan as she looks up into the artificer's eyes.

She chuckles at his question, eye-stars turning yellow. "No, but Mama threatened turning me into a mouse once." She cocks her head and frowns. "Though I bet I could turn into one now if I tried..."

She shakes her head, refocusing. Eye-stars returning to cyan.

"I'm...so sorry I forgot about your past when I summoned that familiar...I wasn't thinking. Why do you wear the gauntlets?" she asks. "Keeping acid off things aside. What would others not understand?"
"Its not as much turning one into a dragon, its more an after affect of being in their presence. Like getting burned by fire rather than becoming it." Sheemish shudders briefly. "Though this particular . . . [i]burn/i] has been spreading lately."

"As for hiding it," Sheemish shrugs, "You saw the effect it had when I showed it to our dwarf captive back in town, when he wouldn't speak to anyone else, as well as the side glance I got from Aiwe just speaking draconic. Or even now when she referred to scales being a good fit for me . . ." Sheemish clenches his left hand for a moment once more. "Many fear and distrust dragons, myself included." He says flatly. "Maybe I'm hiding it from myself as much as from others. One less reminder of ones past, or possible future for that matter." His voice trails off, but his hand stays clenched. "In any case, I think its safe for all staying hidden, though you can tell the others if you think it wise."

The gnolls bodies are disturbing, but not too horiffic for Sheemish. With a whistle he sends stitch off into the air and the duo look around for any other indications of struggle or path their old hamster loving friend may have taken.

Stella is shocked to see the gnolls. She thought they were days away, not half a day away! Would she have time to prepare new spells before encountering the red wizard? But they had more immediate problems...

She shrugs off her bow and tries to find cover as she knocks and fires an arrow of ice. It smashes into the gnoll Dieter is charging towards and shatters into shards that strike it and the gnoll next to it.

Ice Knife. Berzerker takes 25 piercing/cold/radiant damage. Gnoll 1 takes 10 cold damage.

They kept charging, however, tougher than they looked. Not wanting a repeat of what happened with the kobolds in the mind, Stella's form twinkles into stars, and she quickly fires another shot his of radiance.

Round 1 Summary

The lead gnoll froths at the mouth as he takes Dieter's blow, then responds with two heavy hits on Dieter's shield with his greataxe. Fortunately, the tower shield stays strong! The other gnolls take up their leaders ferocity and try to swarm Dieter and Runeson, but the two young warriors stand firm... until the gnoll archer lifts its longbow and carefully looses two arrows at them. Each projectile finds a home in the leg of fighter and paladin, and both Dieter and Runeson find themselves hobbling (Dieter and Runeson each take 8 piercing damage and their speed is lowered by 10 ft).

Meanwhile, the party's strikes hit home and Aiwe's shield-beats prepare them to attack in unison!

Round 2 Summary

The gnoll berserker brings its greataxe down onto Dieter's shield again, then hooks it with the blade and pulls it to the side enough that it can jab forward with a nasty spike on top of its weapon (Dieter takes 6 dmg). A moment later, Stella's magical arrows hit home, and the towering gnoll falls to its knees, then keels over to one side, long tongue lolling out between its jaws as it dies.

Meanwhile, Runeson faces down another pair of gnolls. The deadly hunters work together in an attempt to bring down their dangerous prey. One of them feints, then leaps forward with uncanny speed for its size, driving its spear into the paladin's side (Runeson takes 14 dmg). The other gnoll's nostrils flare as it smells blood in the air, and charges forward to swing its spear hard against Runeson's helmet (Runeson takes 8 more dmg). Momentarily dazed, Runeson only barely gets his shield up to block in time as that same gnoll lunges towards his face, hyena jaws snapping, reaching, and dripping saliva.
OOC:
The party learns that these gnolls can make a bite attack as a bonus action when attacking 'bloodied' creatures, or creatures that have less than half their hp remaining.
The last melee gnoll, acid steaming from patches of scalded fur and skin, comes at Aiwe in a maddened fury, but she skillfully blocks every attempt to gut her with its spear. After its momentum is played out, it drops from its wounds and expires in a puddle of bubbling acid.

As Dieter chooses his next target, another arrow from the archer punches into his thigh (Dieter takes 12 dmg, and his speed stays reduced by 10 ft.). Wounded by Sheemish's lightning and with so many of its kindred dropping before this unusually skilled party, the archer looses another arrow at Aiwe, who blocks it, and then darts back behind the rocky crag, presumably to flee.

Aiwë easily picks up Minsc's trail, and the party is off once more, keeping a wary eye out for more gnolls or other dangers.

Several more hours pass, and the breeze begins to carry the telltale scent of saltwater. They eventually come upon a cliff overlooking a vast expanse of dark water as far as the eye can see. The Sea of Swords, which they haven't been this close to since Candlekeep. Far below, perhaps some 200 feet, waves crash against the cliff face, and... there's a corpse splayed across the lowest rocks, water slightly tugging at it as it recedes back into the ocean.
Apr 3, 2023 6:43 pm
"Smells kind of like home..." Imoen murmurs to nobody in particular. She steps right up to the edge of the cliff and peers down at the soggy corpse. "Ew... Is that... our man Minsc? I can't tell too well from here."

She sighs and steps back from the precipice, looking around at the scenery. She cocks her head after a moment. "Oh. Well, that's impressive!" She points southward along the coast, several miles away and down closer to the water, to where a castle sits out on a peninsula. "Huh! This place really does remind me of Candlekeep! Except obviously not as grand. Looks a bit run-down, in fact.."
Apr 3, 2023 7:05 pm
Stella gets sick to her stomach looking down at the corpse as Imoen points it out. "Yeah...Sheemish," she says pointing hesitantly down at it, "Can you send your little friend to take a closer look?"

She takes a closer look at the cliffside right above where the corpse is, seeing if there's any hints at a struggle or slip. She also looks to see if there's an obvious easy way down, either here or closer to the castle.

Stella notes that there is indeed some disturbance at the cliff edge.

Minsc grunts as the gnoll bites into his shoulder, the hyena jaws crunching down with terrible force. In such close quarters his greatsword is useless, but he still has his greatest weapon: himself.

The big man clamps his hands onto the gnoll's toothy mouth and forces it open and away, then his heavy punch knocks the gnoll back several feet. Towards the cliff edge. With his own blood roaring in his ears, Minsc charges forward. He accepts a painful jab from his enemy's spear, and then drives his shoulder into its hairy gut, forcing both of them to the precipice...

There are narrow furrows in the dirt right up to the edge, as though someone attempted to grab onto something, anything, to keep from falling to the rocks and water below. From the look of a nearby shrub, halfway torn from the ground, that someone did find purchase and pull themself up. But was it Minsc, or his enemy?
Apr 4, 2023 7:38 pm
Dieter peers over the edge and tsks "hopefully that’s not our guy. How much rope do we have? Let’s make confirmation that it’s him and plan a possible retrieval. Runeson and Aiwë we need to post security while sheemish and Stella work. Imoen, once we receive confirmation set up camp and get some food and hot water readyif that’s Minsc he will need immediate medical attention." Dieter pauses and looks around "any questions or ideas?"

Stitch flits down the rocky cliff and quickly makes her way to the corpse. This close, she can easily make out the soggy thing's features: long, leanly muscled arms and legs covered in spotted fur. Definitely not Minsc.

A big wave crashes in, flooding the nook between rocks and nearly catching and pummeling Stitch. The tide must be on its way in; any wave now might be the one to carry the corpse out to sea. As the water rushes back out, the gnoll's body lolls over to one side, revealing a potion hanging from its belt, attached by a knotted strip of leather.

With more waves incoming, Sheemish and Stitch are faced with a choice: return up to the cliff and its relative safety, or try to retrieve the potion and risk being swept up in a wave?

Buzzing over the corpse, Stitch descends towards the potion bottle. A thrumb emits from its small workings as she builds a magnetic charge on her underside. Stitch dives down and tries to connect with the metal ring of the corked lid. Not used to slow decisive aim, it takes two tries but she she just manages to connect. Witheffort stitch bobs back to the group.

Round 1 Summary

With wide, wild eyes the gnolls descend on the party! A volley of arrows from Dieter and Stella whistles through the air, and the gnoll shaman takes the worst of it. It collapses backwards with arrows mundane and magical sticking from its chest.

With Dieter in the back using his bow, Runeson and Aiwe stand in front to accept the gnolls' charge. The two brutes go for Runeson, scoring several solid blows on the paladin (Runey takes 27 dmg), but he responds with a radiant hammer uppercut that shatters one brute's lower jaw. It cries out in pain, but from the murderous expression on its broken hyena face it won't be done with this fight until Runeson lies in a puddle of his own blood. And the paladin, though he stands tall, bears grievous wounds. Smelling his blood, the other berserker tries to bite out Runeson's throat to finish him off, but a quick step to the side and a bash with his shield keeps the large gnoll at bay (B2 misses with its bonus action Bite attack). Imoen's well-placed arrow slams home into that second gnoll, giving Runeson a moment to recover (B2 takes 19 dmg).

Meanwhile, Aiwe circles around slightly and begins her spell just as the other two gnolls reach her. The battle-seasoned bard turns aside a spear thrust with her drum-shield, but the second gnoll cleverly aims for a less-armored part of her leg. The blow connects (Aiwe takes 4 dmg), but it's not enough to keep her from completing her thunderous spell. A wave of booming energy rolls over her two opponents, flinging one of them through the air to land perilously close to the cliff edge (G1 takes 6 thunder dmg and is pushed 15 ft, just next to the cliff edge). It scrambles for a moment before finding safe footing. The other gnoll, as well as one of the nearby brutes, resist most of the spell, but are still rattled as its impact shakes their bones (G2 and B1 each take 3 thunder dmg).

In the aftermath of Aiwe's spell a whispering, guttural voice can just barely be heard as the fallen shaman casts a spell with its dying breath. A puddle of acrid green liquid seeps up from the ground under Stella and Dieter's feet, spitting drops of acid as bubbles burst within. Dieter manages to keep his footing on ground that is suddenly slick, but Stella (much like her father in the ignored parts of the heroic tales) slips in surprise and falls to her hands and knees in the puddle (Stella falls prone and takes 15 acid dmg). Then, just as quickly as it appeared, the acid is gone, its conjurer finally succumbed to its wounds (Bone Shaman is definitely dead).

Noticing Imoen focusing fire on different targets from the rest of the party, she switches her focuses to join Imoen. They would have to talk about coordinating that...

When she's about to fire however, the shaman's acidic pool sends her slipping to the ground, and the condense stardust explodes into a nebula, filling the surrounding area with a cloud of blue and green. Blinded, she catches herself with her hands and screams in pain as acid burns into her palms.

(Nat 1. Wild Magic Surge. Casts fog cloud centered on self, heavily obscuring the area in a 20 ft. radius for 1 minute.)

She stands blinded. She couldn't shoot at the gnolls by her allies...she might hit them! But could hear the gnoll near the cliffside. She aims, fires, and hopes for the best, but her radiant arrow streaks past over the cliffside.

"The Tree grows high under icy sky," Aiwë sings, turning a gentle ballad to a groaning war chant. She doesn't want Stella to lose her footing on the wrong side of the cliff in that fog cloud. "Come, come, to the Tree, to the warmth, to the breeze. Aching heart and feeble knees, find rest in the leaves."

Round 2 Summary

Dieter's arrival on the front lines bolsters the adventurers, and he, Runeson, and Aiwe present a unified front to their slavering opponents. The tide soon turns, however, when the two brutish berserker gnolls rally and respond with devastating swings of their greataxes, snapping with their jaws where they can.

The party's front line buckles as Dieter takes a pair of slashes that nearly cripple his armor (Dieter takes 26 dmg). At the same time, the other berserker slams the spiked head of its greataxe into Runeson's sternum, puncturing the armor and delivering a near-mortal wound to the paladin (Runeson takes 8 dmg), then rips the weapon free and around to cut deeply into Aiwe's side (Aiwe takes 25 dmg, Relentless Endurance leaves her at 1 hp).

Then all combatants are blinded as Stella's misfired spell rolls over the battleground in the form of thick fog. Visibility is almost entirely cut off. The sounds, however, seem to echo amplified within the magical barrier...

...heavy breathing... groans... snarls... boots and clawed feet... snuffling... the sound of a blade sinking into flesh, and the thud of a large body. The slowed snapping of jaws and frenzied death rattle reveal the deceased's identity... (Dieter kills B1)

...singing?

"The Tree grows high under icy sky..." Aiwe's voice, somehow still strong despite her grievous injury, seems to come from every direction. It's eerie, but comforting too.

Stella notes a hazy silhouette appear nearby, but before she can guess at its owner it leaps at her with a crazed, ravenous laugh. She manages to duck away and hears its spear strike the rocky ground. At the same time, a flash of divine light lights up the fog for just a moment, and somewhere a gnoll howls in pain (Runeson crits again!). The laughing near Stella stops, and the silhouette vanishes just as the young woman looses one of her starlit arrows.

"...come, come, to the Tree, to the warmth, to the breeze..." The voice sounds closer; Aiwe must be mere feet away!

...running feet and the twang of a bow, followed by a curse word too mature for Imoen's young voice...

Another yipping laugh sounds from right behind Stella, but then a heavy thunk sounds as Aiwe's club finds the gnoll's head, and the monster retreats deeper into the fog. "Aching heart and feeble knees, find rest in the leaves."

There she is! Stella can just about make out her friend's features when a hairy form slams into the bard and bites deeply into her shoulder, carrying her to the ground! (Aiwe takes 4 dmg and is bleeding out)

BOOM!!!

The ground shakes, the fog cloud suddenly rent asunder by a powerful thunderwave spell, and it's like the sudden ending of a surreal dream. The broken bodies of two gnolls tumble off the seaside cliff. Sheemish is kneeling on stone torn by his resonating gauntlets, light from the dipping sun burning away the vestiges of fog around him. He gets to his feet, then grimly extends a hand toward the last gnoll, one of the brutes, tearing at Aiwe's shoulder with its hyena-teeth. It looks up just in time to take a roiling mass of acid squarely in the face. It dies as the acid eats away its flesh, leaving a mottled canine skull for a head.

"If the gnolls are based in the castle, we'll need to investigate more before we barge in..." She looks down, trying to find Minsc's tracks from where she remembered last seeing some. She puts a finger to her lip. "I can conjure another stardust familiar and send it to scout. Dieter, Runeson? How familiar are you two with castles? Maybe you could give us pointers on what we should look for if we do need to break in?"

"Aaand we'll want to find out where Minsc actually is...If he is in the castle, well, we probably can't just barge in through the front door. Maybe we could...make a raft and lower it and ourselves down? Enter by the coast? If there's even a way in from down there..."

With the sun fast disappearing beyond the sea's horizon, the party looks for a safe place to camp for the night. After a surprisingly short search, Stella finds a cave entrance hidden by undergrowth. It's quite expansive on the inside, and looks to be uninhabited by wildlife.

Someone had been there recently, however.

Dirty bandages spotted with blood lie on the cave floor. They look to be the same style as Minsc's bandages the party previously found. They seem to have been discarded fairly recently, perhaps within the last several hours. Perhaps the party's tattooed warrior friend is not so far away.

Following Minsc's tracks from that spot, the group discovers a passage from the main chamber that winds downward in a spiral. Soon they can hear the crash of waves echoing through the tunnel, and the smell of saltwater becomes much stronger. Indeed, they find that the tunnel empties out at the bottom of the cliffs, at just about the level of the water at high tide.

It's here that they find another sign of Minsc's passage: his pack, bedroll, and armor are neatly propped up against the cave wall, a dozen feet from where the water begins. Wherever he is, Minsc seems to have taken his weapons and most important items with him. And looking out the tunnel's exit, over the waves and through the darkness the party can see faint lights of the gnolls' castle.

It seems obvious that Minsc decided to brave the sea and swim out to the castle.

Within the safety of the cave, Stella is able to summon forth a winged familiar made of stardust. The owl (or other type of bird? takes to the night air, seeming no more than a twinkling of lights against the starlit sky.

The owl easily notes a pair of gnoll patrols out; they boldly carry torches, apparently preferring the flickering brightness to the concealing darkness. Even darkvision has its limits, after all, and these patrols seem to be moving in a search pattern.

The familiar continues over onto the peninsula, passing over three distinct checkpoints where gnoll sentries peer out into the night, guarding against any intruder who tries to come up that way. Each checkpoint has a bonfire ready to be lit, presumably to warn the other checkpoints and the castle of any trouble.

And then on to the castle itself, which truly has seen better days. There are plenty of gaping holes in the outer wall, and even the portcullis seems to have been ripped out of place. Whatever force laid siege to this place an age ago must have been mighty indeed.

In the castle's wide courtyard the familiar finds what must be the majority of the gnolls, all cavorting around a large bonfire. Some dance crookedly, some scream festively into the night, and others help themselves to the half-dozen barrels full of fish spread out among the scene. All told, there must be about twenty gnolls here. Counting the patrols and sentries spotted earlier, that makes somewhere between 30-40 hyena-people.

Many of the partying gnolls below swallow their fish whole. There seem to be some, however, that don't care for some parts of the meal. The leftover bits of fish get tossed into a deep pit that's been dug out near the bonfire, always with a yipping chuckle.

Suddenly one of the gnolls, this one a large female, lets out a blood-chilling shriek into the open night air, furry arms lifted high. This seems to get the attention of the other gnolls, who quiet from their festivities and look eagerly to the female.

She leaps atop a nearby crate and begins to speak in a loud, harsh voice. Stella doesn't understand the words, but the meaning isn't hard to guess, as the female seizes a spear from the closest observer and uses it to point down into the pit. All the gnolls laugh loudly at this, showing their teeth and slapping each other across the back in a congratulatory fashion.

Clearly, there's something, or someone, important down there.

The female snarls to get the attention back on her, then goes on to speak for a minute or so. That done, she jabs her spear up and to the east, where the sun will rise in the morning. She passes the spear slowly overhead, drawing an invisible line all the way to the west, where the sun recently disappeared. And then with another shriek she snaps the spear's shaft over her knee.

The crowd of watching gnolls cheer again at this, and this time the female doesn't quell them. She hops down from her makeshift podium and leans over the edge of the pit, then hurls the broken spear pieces down into it. Over the gnolls' frenzied cacophony, the owl familiar's keen ears can just pick out the surprised cry of a human woman.

"At home, swimming is a good way to get really dead really fast," Aiwë says, assessing the ocean. "So I don't know how. What if we light their alarm fires for them? They'll go wild searching for something that isn't there, get all frustrated at each other, and then when things have settled a little bit they are still out of sorts without fires left to use, we can sneak in?"

Dieter listens intently "thats a great idea Aiwë we can find a safe spot to hold up while they settle into complacency and then we attack."
Apr 15, 2023 7:03 pm
"I will go, I will light the fires. I’ll meet you back here once I’ve completed the task." Dieter pauses "but I have one condition, Aiwë must write me a song for the ages that will never die".

If the party agrees to the plan dieter will start doffing his armour aswell as removing his clothes except his new boots and underwear. He will then cover his body and face in mud. Dieter has a tall slender frame, his body is covered in rather large scars. Over his right pectoral is the wide scar from the sword spider that ran him through. While there is no mark of the crushing hammer blow that killed him aside from the slight paleness to his skin his legs and shoulders are littered with bite marks and arrow wounds. Altogether it paints a strange picture the markings on his young body don’t give him an aura of strength or power but of sacrifice and service.

With only Stella's owl familiar as company, Dieter speeds off into early-morning light, dressed only in mud, his unmentionables and the stylish elven boots. To his credit, the young warrior truly does disappear into the shadows and underbrush.

They can only hope that the party didn't bring Ug's bad luck with loincloths with them from Icewind Dale (except for Sheemish, who in fact does carry with him that unfortunate, too-large garment).

With the elven boots magically silencing his steps, and with the familiar to point the way and spy out patrols, he makes good time. The gnolls out patrolling the woods this morning find no sign of him, not even when passing within mere feet of clever Dieter. At one point he rounds a large boulder and nearly walks into a lone, silent gnoll hunter, but fortunately a distracting hoot from the owl familiar is all it takes for Dieter to slip past unnoticed.

Light morning rainfall is cold on Dieter's muddy skin, but he firmly continues on, until he finally comes to the place where the Sea of Swords seems to bend inward, allowing the castle's peninsula to stretch outward across the water. There, a few hundred feet away, is his goal: the alarm pyre. The bundles of wood and kindling must be slightly damp from the short bouts of rain, but Dieter remembers well the magic of the fire arrows he carries.

Dawn's light glints off the weapons of the two gnoll guards. Dieter waits patiently until one of the gnolls steps away to relieve itself in the bushes nearby, then draws and looses a fire arrow in one smooth motion. Sparks erupt from the arrow as soon as it leaves the bow, causing a stream of flickering light in the sky as it arcs up and away, then comes down to strike the middle of the pyre. Sure enough, the arrow's magical flames race across the surrounding wood, and in moments the entire pyre is lit!

The one gnoll guard stares in astonishment at the burning pyre. A few moments the sound of a horn comes from further out in the peninsula; the alarm has been seen. The second hyena-man comes running back and, seeing no trouble, accuses the first of lighting the pyre needlessly. The two try to put out the flames, and Dieter easily vanishes into the woods once more.

It's a simple matter for Dieter to bury himself in a muddy pool long enough for the gnoll patrols to pass him by as they rush towards the peninsula, and once they've gone, he quickly makes his way back to the party's cave camp.
Apr 16, 2023 1:58 am
Meanwhile, the party has finished their preparations of a makeshift raft. With Dieter safely returned, they wait only long enough for him to dress himself once more, and then they board the raft and make their way out of the cave and into the ocean.

Well, nearly to the ocean. First they must deal with the breaking waves that bar them from the relative calm beyond.

Aiwë immediately begins composing per Dieter's request. She murmurs lyrics and marks beats to herself the entire time he is gone and through much of the voyage on the raft. It's the very first waves that nearly do the party in. This close to the large rocks, any mistake will mean the end of their raft, and possibly their lives.

Fortunately, Aiwe and Runeson are on their game. With long poles they push against anything they can find purchase on, and together they keep the raft from smashing against the rocks. Meanwhile the others help keep the thing from tipping by shifting their weight across the wooden planks.

An especially large wave comes crashing down, but Stella parts the crest just before it impacts the party, cleverly diverting the worst effects. Still, it's enough to force Dieter and Sheemish off the raft. They're able to cling to the raft's sides, but are dragged across the sharp corals of a small reef before Aiwe can haul them back onto the raft (Dieter and Sheemish each take 2 piercing dmg). The wounds aren't grievous by any means, and they're able to shrug off the sting of saltwater rinsing the blood away.

Fortunately, that seems to be the end of the worst. Having found a rhythm to their strokes and positioning, the party easily crests the next few waves and they find themselves suddenly on much calmer waters. The castle looks considerably nearer from this position, perhaps a half-hour's trip on the raft.

The group keeps their eyes peeled for any signs of movement on the battlements or shore, but they see nothing. Except the dorsal fin of an enormous shark circling the raft. The monstrous thing must be at least 25 feet long, easily more than twice the length of the raft itself.
OOC:
Up to you guys how to handle the shark. Shoot it from a distance? Stab it when it gets close? Throw Imoen out of the raft to distract it? Bear in mind that a violent struggle *could* possibly draw the attention of gnolls in the castle (not guaranteed, especially with ya'll's excellent distraction from earlier, but it would be a possibility).

"Oh dear..." Stella says at the sight of the shark, shivering from the water. She had attuned herself to plants last night, not animals!

"Blood," she says, hugging a pole of the raft while cutting a strip of fabric. "We can use blood to distract it. Send it away from us. Any...volunteers?" she asks, wincing, and holding up her knife.

She whistles softly and her brown owl familiar lands on her shoulder. "I'll have him fly the cloth out and drop it aways away, " she explains.
Apr 24, 2023 11:49 pm
"Oh neat, will that work?" The question is one of curiosity, not doubt. She holds her arm out for Stella even as she speaks the words, trusting her completely.
Apr 24, 2023 11:58 pm
"Um...I hope? Sharks tend to be very attracted to the smell of blood. If it doesn't, I can try to distract it with a fish familiar. Failing that..." she says uncomfortably, "We may have to fight."

"Jassa's Dagger, grant precision..." she says in druidic over the churning waves. She didn't want to accidentally give Aiwë a gaping wound, though part of her doubted she could even if she tried. She steadies her knife and the cloth at Aiwë's arm and tries to soak it with a bit of the orc's blood.

The owl on her shoulder spreads its wings expectantly, preparing to take flight and waiting for the cloth.

At Aiwe's encouragement Stella's able to thoroughly soak the cloth, and then the owl familiar drops it into the sea a fair distance away. It doesn't take long for the enormous shark to turn in that direction, the wake of its powerful tail churning the water. As the monstrous fish is distracted, the party presses forward with all speed.

Ahead of them is a wide expanse of beach outside the castle walls. There's also a fairly large dock that seems to be connected to the castle itself. There are no gnolls in sight, but distant horns from the direction of the peninsula confirm that they're still confused by Dieter's distraction with the alarm pyre.

The companions make for the dock. Stella's familiar keeps an eye on the giant shark, which seems interested only in investigating the bloody cloth. After a few minutes of exertion, the party pulls up alongside a wooden pier in the shadow of one of the castle's walls. There are no gnolls or other creatures in sight, but there are a couple of strung fishing poles leaning against the wall.

Just beyond the poles is a stout wooden door set into the castle wall.

As they quietly push their raft under the pier, they find two dead gnolls floating under there, their necks broken. More of Minsc's work?

The party carefully examines the door into the castle and finds it unlocked.
May 1, 2023 7:36 pm
Stella's both disturbed and relieves at the dead gnolls. They were probably on Misnc's trail!

"I've prepared a spell that can quiet us and make us all blend into our surroundings as we explore," she quietly tells the others, as she sweeps her hand in flowing motions. Each time, the water on one of her companions sweeps off them and out of their clothes, leaving them dry instead of cold and wet. "but I can only hold it for a few minutes...maybe ten? Should I cast it now, or save it until the commotion from our distraction has died down?" she asks, magically wringing the water out of her own hair and clothes now.

She brushes aside some holds one ear near the crack of the door and plugs a finger into her other ear, trying to listen for signs of gnolls inside. She doubted it, given the state of the gnolls out here, but it was the sort of thing you did in infiltrations, right? She had never done one before and was clearly nervous, but her eyes were sparklingly alert.

"Hear anything?" she asks her owl, perched on her shoulder.

The gnolls set their barrels down near a pair of fishing poles leaning against the wall and continue their conversation. Stella can't begin to understand their language, but she thinks they might be intending to stay here for a while. Sure enough, they take up the fishing poles and squat down on the dock, baiting their hooks (a half-glimpse assures her she doesn't really want to know what they're using for bait) and casting the lines out into the water.

They've only settled there for a moment when one of the gnolls twitches its snout and begins sniffing around the dock planks. Nearby, Imoen stiffens in fear. Stella, however, understands that it likely smells the soggy bodies of the two dead gnolls beneath the dock, rather than catching the scent of the party. The other gnoll takes the opportunity to smack its friend on the back of the head and grumble at it, and the two go back to their fishing. Apparently they smell dead things by the sea often enough that soggy corpses don't smell out of place.

The two gnolls have their backs to the party and the castle door.

With their approach magically concealed by Stella's spell the party leaps forward to finish the gnolls off quickly!

Unfortunately, things don't quite go as planned.

Dieter and Sheemish manage to land hits on the unsuspecting monsters, but the others fumble their attacks. As the startled gnolls drop the fishing poles and draw their weapons, Imoen takes aim at one. Just as she looses the arrow her eyes widen and she twitches; the shot goes far wide. "Oh snapple-"

Imoen's curse is cut off as Aiwe covers the area in complete magical silence. Just as well, for the gnolls are unable to call for help. Wounded and cornered, the two hyena-men frantically defend themselves.

Round 2 Summary

Lady Luck doesn't seem to be with the party as they engage these two enemies. Runeson takes a small jab from one gnoll, but his armor stops the spear before it can dig too deeply (Runeson takes 4 dmg). Stella finishes off that gnoll with a well-placed shot, and it slumps off the dock and into the water.

Meanwhile, Dieter runs his gnoll through. The ugly creature accepts the blow and pulls Dieter closer, then rams its spear up, the jagged tip tearing through his armor (Dieter takes 15 dmg). With frightening strength, the gnoll lifts Dieter off his feet and brings the young fighter up to its slavering, too-quiet jaws, even with Dieter's sword still buried in its middle. But by this point of his adventuring career, Dieter has been through worse. He keeps the grip on his blade and, with a determined grunt that no one can hear, he twists the weapon hard just before those terrible jaws can close down on his face. The gnoll shudders as it dies, dropping Dieter back to the wooden planks with a soundless thud.

Stella slings her bow over her shoulder and rushes over to tend to Dieter's wounds, expression a mix of worry and annoyance. Her mouth is moving, seemingly scoldingly as she soaks up blood, applies herbs, and a bandage, but she makes no sound in Aiwë's magical silence. It's made even more indistinct by the strange aura of mottled shadow exuding from Stella herself.

Stella's eyes widen at the ladder. "Um...nice, I guess...how does that help us...?" she looks up to see if there's a window or anything that Sheemish was planning to use the ladder for.

"Dieter, Runeson," she asks quietly, voice muffled slightly by her spell. "You know castles, right? At least better than us Ice Windalians. Where might gnolls hold a high profile prisoner?"
OOC:
If there's a window, and if they might use a tower, it might be worth checking higher up first. Otherwise, we can start searching one door at the time from the bottom up.

Not many windows can be seen here from the docks, but atop the wall is a small guard tower that overlooks the area. It's presumably unoccupied, as no alarm has sounded. The ladder can reach one of the tower's arrow slits, but the opening is only a few inches wide. Still, by the condition of the tower's weathered exterior Sheemish thinks that he can remove some loose stones and mortar around the arrow slit. It would take a few minutes, and certainly be noisy, but he's sure he can make an opening large enough for the party to pass through into an upper section of the castle.
May 11, 2023 11:52 pm
Curious and trusting in the loincloth, Sheemish props the ladder up to small window slot.

"Im not running away or trying to endanger anyone," he says with a wink to the others, "but it might be easier sneaking in from a forgotten entrance than a commonly used one. I’m at least going to check it out.

Sheemish ascends and begins removing rubble.

"That's going to make a lot of noise," Aiwë grimaces. "Not everything has to be loud, indeed."

"We should be ready for more gnolls coming to investigate." Aiwë stands next to the door, back flat against the stone, ready with her club to smack any gnolls that come out of it.
May 12, 2023 12:27 am
Sheemish finds the ladder to be well-made and quite sturdy for having been found in a goliath barbarian's loincloth after having spent who knows how much time in there. He works quickly and carefully to widen the arrow slit, but there's a fair amount of chipping involved, and the sound echoes faintly off the castle walls...

Aiwë hears a door open from the corridor. A few moments later a surprisingly fat gnoll wearing an apron stained with... who knows what steps out into the sea air. The gnoll doesn't even have time to look around before Aiwë strikes!

The soft noise of rubble being moved softly meshes with that of the sounds of night and sea spray as Sheemish gets lost in the work. Now all blacksmith work is loud, often it takes delicacy and finesse. The young blacksmiths instincts take over and what is left is a wide opening with loose debri carefully set aside for easy passage. Sheemish tucks a rock from the rubble into a pocket as a small souvenir.

Sheemish's work is expertly done. In just a few minutes' time the way is clear, and no more gnolls have appeared from the hallway below.

With an unimpeded view into the tower, Sheemish finds a room covered in dust. The furnishings are few; a table that's somehow still standing, and two chairs that are not. On the far wall hang a couple of mundane bows that almost certainly no longer function properly. To one side of the room is a staircase that runs down, and on the other side is a door barely hanging on its hinges, beyond which seems to be a rampart atop the castle's wall.

But something shiny catches the artificer's eye... On the table is a small pile of coins.
May 12, 2023 9:12 pm
Sheemish pockets the coins (not in the loincloth) and then inches out to the ramparts. Maybe he or Stitch could get a better view of the courtyard below? He also takes mental measurements on if the ladder could make its way through the new entrance and through the door to the ramparts) it might’ve better where it is as an emergency exit, but could be useful to get to wherever the prisoner pit might be.

"We better pull the ladder up," Stella suggests. "If anyone else wanders out here, they'll be sure to notice it if it's leaned up against the wall."
May 13, 2023 4:32 am
Sheemish notes the glint of gold through the dust on the coins as he picks them up. Interestingly, they seem to come from a variety of nations, some of which he has trouble recognizing. Still, gold is gold, and he judges he's found about 120 pieces.

The rest of the party ascends the ladder and pulls it up after them. Fortunately there seems to be just enough room to maneuver the cumbersome thing, and if desired the companions can bring it out onto the rampart with them.

With morning's light out in full, the party can clearly see how the rampart stretches out to a second tower. Its door looks to be intact and shut. Peering down over the castle-side of the rampart, the adventurers see what must have once been a garden. It's extremely overgrown now, but here and there are bits of stone statues that poke through the thick vegetation. It looks like it could be a good place to hide, should the need arise.

Considering the castle's general layout, which Stella received last night from her familiar's scouting, the group is sure that from the second tower they'll be able to look down into the courtyard where Dynaheir is being held. Similarly, the garden below runs around the outside of the main keep, and likely connects to the courtyard as well.

It would seem that the party has two ways to access the courtyard: from the second tower, and via the overgrown garden. So far the castle's upper levels have been uninhabited, and the high vantage point may be useful in surveying the courtyard. On the other hand, the garden is on the ground, which is where they'll certainly need to be at some point to enter the courtyard. Given its dense foliage, it might be a way to get right up to the courtyard without being seen.

However they choose to proceed, they understand that very soon they'll likely be engaging a dangerous number of gnolls in combat. It would be wise to have weapons and spells at the ready.

Dieter points to the second tower. "We will have the high ground, follow me and keep quiet". Dieter leads the party to the tower once there he’ll assign defensive positions and fire points for the archers and spell slingers.

The party proceeds quietly to the second tower, keeping their heads low and eyes peeled. They listen at the door and hear nothing from the other side, but carried on the breeze they can hear a group of gnolls arguing loudly in the courtyard.

Imoen moves forward in an easy crouch and sticks her eye up to the door's keyhole. Then she winks at Dieter and pulls out some slim tools. She makes a few quick motions and there's a small *snick*, and the door swings open to reveal a guardroom much like the previous tower.

"Easy as Puffgut's pie!" she murmurs, and moves carefully into the room.
May 15, 2023 6:58 pm
This tower room is as dusty as the last one, but shows that at some point someone with pawed feet crossed the floor. Most likely a gnoll came from the far entrance and was checking the place out, but was deterred by the locked door. The far door is open, revealing yet more battlements. There's a rusty halberd leaning against one corner, and the outer wall has several arrow slits showing some of the landscape outside.

The inner wall has a single arrow slit that gives the party a partial view into the courtyard, where a handful of gnolls are bickering amongst themselves.

Sharing one arrow slit among the party may be troublesome, especially as only about half the courtyard is visible through it. But the ramparts on the other side of the tower, while providing a bit less cover than the arrow slit, certainly would allow the party to view the entire courtyard. Sheemish and Dieter are quick to point out, though, that at the end of the far rampart is another stairway leading down into the courtyard, close to the main gate. That stairway is the most likely avenue of melee assault should the gnolls below be alerted to the party's presence.
May 15, 2023 7:06 pm
"Imoen look for a quick exit, the only difference between a defensive position and a grave is an escape route." Dieter will lock the door behind them and bar it if possible. He doesn’t want any gnolls coming up behind them by accident or worse on purpose. If the door is the only escape route he’ll check to make sure it’ll easily unlocked if they need it.

Imoen holds up her hands in a helpless gesture as Dieter closes the door they just came through. It doesn't look like it'll lock without a key or some skullduggery. "Um. Well I'm no wizard to magic us out, but it looks like Sheemish still has his ladder, so he can just let us down the castle wall pretty much anywhere we want. Except, like, exactly in this room, I guess... unless he makes another hole in the wall? Then again, the floor's made of wood, so if we're breaking stuff that might be easier to go through than a foot or whatever of stone." She kneels down and lightly taps the old wooden floorboards. "Yeah, these don't look great."
May 16, 2023 12:20 am
Stitch's flitting about the air of the courtyard goes unnoticed by the gnolls below, and she's able to take note of a few interesting things:

1) There are 6 gnolls in the wide courtyard. 4 of these are armed with spears, while the remaining 2 have longbows. At the moment they're bickering and eating fish from some nearby barrels. There don't seem to be any gnolls on any of the other ramparts.

2) There is indeed a dark-skinned human woman at the bottom of a wide pit within the courtyard. She looks to be sleeping, no doubt catching what rest she can while there are fewer gnolls about.

3) The main gate's portcullis is raised; it seems to be one of the few things the gnolls and have bothered repairing and maintaining. And Stitch sees another patrol of gnolls nearing the castle, a group of 8. If the party acts quickly (and soon), they might have time to finish off the courtyard gnolls before the other group arrives.

4) The double-doors leading into the castle itself are closed. The courtyard gnolls pause every so often to look warily in that direction, as though expecting something dangerous or fearful to come out at any time.

One of the gnolls in the courtyard below picks bits of fish out of its teeth with a claw. It puts its long arm into the nearest barrel for more food and, apparently finding it empty, shoves the barrel away and moves to the next nearest one.

Dieter and Stella sneak their way out across the battlements. Keeping low, and further hidden by Stella's magic, the two make it to the far end of the battlements and the stairs there without problems. The stairs here turn and run down the near side of the castle wall, without any railing or other visual barrier to hide behind. Still, all the gnolls seem occupied, and Stella's spell is holding up. They proceed quickly and quietly down the stairs, eyes and ears sharpened for any surprises.

They get to the bottom of the stairs and step into the courtyard itself. There's the portcullis, just a couple dozen feet away. And there's the winch that operates it, almost within arm's reach.

The food-seeking gnoll comes to a large barrel and removes the lid...
May 31, 2023 7:39 pm
A muscled arm reaches up out of the fish barrel and socks the gnoll in the jaw! The monster staggers, blinking in confusion and spitting pointy teeth, when a bald man stands up out of the barrel, dead fish sliding off his massive shoulders. With a furious yell, Minsc decks the gnoll again, this time so hard it falls to the ground with a cracked skull (gnoll takes 25 bludgeoning damage and dies). Minsc grabs the gnoll's fallen spear and holds it high in challenge. Just barely, a small, furry rodent can be seen scurrying along the man's arm. "MINSC AND BOO FOR JUSTICE!!!"

The other five gnolls scramble for their weapons, caught completely unawares by the sudden appearance of this large warrior!

As cries of alarm sound, there are additional shouts from beyond the portcullis. Reinforcements will be here soon!

Dieter and Stella are in the courtyard at the bottom of the stairs, near to the winch that controls the portcullis.

I think all the other heroes are in the tower overlooking the courtyard. There's an arrow slit there that provides 3/4 cover. If you move out onto the battlements, you still get 1/2 cover from attacks below. If you want to get down into melee with the gnolls, you'll need to run all the way to the stairs and down, or jump down (about 20 ft), or use the portable ladder, or break through the floor, or something!

Round 1 Summary

The courtyard explodes with action and war cries as the battle ensues.

The two gnolls nearest Minsc move to either side of him, flanking the muscular warrior and readying their spears. Then, snarling, they both leap at him. He catches one on his claimed spear, jabbing so fiercely with the weapon that it drives completely through the gnoll and then snaps in his hands. The other gnoll gives Minsc a nasty poke, adding to the not-insignificant wounds he's already sustained over the last two days, but he roars in the monster's face and looks around for another weapon... only to find his opponent slumping to the ground, overcome by lightning and spell. Minsc looks up toward the tower and punches his fist upward in gratitude.

Yips and snarls come from the direction of the main gate as the other band of gnolls comes into sight, sprinting on bestial paws to join the fight. At any moment they'll make it to and through the gate!

Meanwhile, arrows flit back and forth through the air, several hitting the tower and battlements where the companions ready their next attacks. Then a glowing arrow from Stella shoots forth to powerfully strike one of the gnoll archers. A handaxe soon follows as Runeson charges down the stairway from the battlements, and that archer crumples. The remaining archer ducks behind a table, then peers out to see Dieter about to cut the rope connecting the winch to the portcullis. It takes careful aim, then shoots an arrow right at the young warrior. Sharpened battle senses seem to warn Dieter, however, and he turns just in time to deflect the projectile with his shield... and then he cuts the rope.

There's an audible *snap* that causes all combatants to look towards the front gate, and then the portcullis slides closed with a heavy *whumph*. Just in time to cut off the reinforcements from joining the battle.

Minsc, in spite of his wounds, laughs heartily when he notices Stella's glowing form. "Friend Stella! You came!" He picks up another spear, knuckles tightening around the wood. "But where is my wychlaran? Where is Dynaheir?"

With only two gnolls left living in the courtyard, the party's hopes rise! But then the double-doors of the main keep burst open, and out comes a trio of heavily armed gnolls. One of them is the large female Stella's familiar observed last night. She lifts a two-handed axe high and points it at Dieter, no doubt blaming him for closing the gate. The challenge is clear; she's coming for him.

Minsc, in spite of his wounds, laughs heartily when he notices Stella's glowing form. "Friend Stella! You came!" He picks up another spear, knuckles tightening around the wood. "But where is my wychlaran? Where is Dynaheir?"
"The pit!" Stella shouts, radiant stardust puffing from her mouth. He was just barely holding on...Her instincts told her to keep after the archer, but the oncoming threats would be hard to deal with.

She kneels down, her glowing white hair flowing upwards as she taps a constellation on to the ground. "Forest of the Firbolg..."

Tendrils of stardust break from the ground around the gnoll chieftess and the gnolls at her sides. They swirl and weave around, but the gnolls barge through them before they can solidify into a vines.

(Entangle. Chieftess and Veterans are now in difficult terrain, but avoid being restrained)

Stella glowers and fires another quick radiant shot, grazing off the Chieftess. (Chieftess takes 4 radiant damage)

Sheemish shifts his stance within the tower, observing the new threat entering the courtyard. Minsc could probably handle himself for a moment right? This new enemy should definitely be the focus now.

Round 2 Summary

Dieter and the gnoll chieftess hurl themselves at each other, weapons flashing! Dieter's bladework is impressive as he scores two heavy hits on her, but through her rage she presses on through the blows and brings her axe down hard on his shield, then punches straight out with the haft of her weapon, catching Dieter straight in the face (Dieter takes 18 damage). As the young fighter reels from that nasty hit, the chieftess lunges forward with her bone-crushing jaws, clamping down on his armored shoulder (Dieter takes another 4 damage.

A flash of radiant light from Stella grazes the chieftess, but still she bites down on Dieter. With tremendous strength, she seems nearly about to lift the young man off the ground with the power of her jaws and neck alone.

Lightning rains down from on high, coursing from Sheemish's gauntlets through the air to strike the chieftess. With the smell of burnt fur filling his nostrils, Dieter can also feel a menacing growl from the chieftess vibrate through his shoulder. She still doesn't let go.

Then Runeson arrives. Leaping high, the paladin calls on the power of Hoar to smite this foe, and the morningstar in his hand shines like a beacon. He brings the weapon home right on the chieftess' head. For a moment she seems as though she almost might pull Dieter to the ground with her as she crumples, but finally her teeth slide free of his shoulder, her rage consumed by death.

The fight has not paused during this exchange, however. Minsc moves with a quickness belying his size, stepping around his gnoll opponent, then slipping the spear haft over the gnoll's head and putting strong pressure on its throat. A mighty twist follows, and the gnoll's neck snaps (Spear Gnoll 3 takes 22 damage). Minsc drops spear and gnoll both, then sprints to the pit Stella pointed out and drops into a slide, skidding over the pit's edge and into its depths.

Meanwhile, one of the gnoll veterans jabs Runeson in the side with its spear (Runeson takes 3 dmg). The other veteran hurls one spear, and then another. One of them strikes the now-useless winch, but the other sinks into Stella's starry form (Stella takes 8 piercing damage). The weight of the weapon is nearly enough to bring Stella to her knees, but she proves once again that she's made of tougher stuff than that and stays on her feet.

An arrow splinters against Sheemish's arrow slit. It's a close one, but the artificer's position remains secure. Another arrow whistles toward Aiwe, however, and punches into her just as she releases her spell (Aiwe takes 6 dmg). The battle-bard keeps her willpower intact, however, and her curse of misfortune falls successfully over one of the gnoll veterans.

Imoen, who has slipped furtively further down the battlements to a new posiiton, pops up and lets loose a skilled shot that catches one of the veterans right in the side (Vet 1 takes 13 dmg.

With the chieftess down, the two veterans and remaining gnoll archer begin to visibly waiver; any group capable of taking down their leader is surely strong enough to win against the likes of them. Still, gnoll bloodlust is a a powerful motivator, and these three gnolls stay in the fight.

But there's something else... Stella, so close to the gate, hears it first: a terrible chorus of baying, the stench of seared flesh, the screams of gnolls dying. Those monsters just on the other side of the closed portcullis quit their jeering and turn to face something behind them, something out of sight of the party.

""Augh!!" Stella gasps at the spear striking her leg, stardust spewing from the wound. She quickly pulls it out, her light sustaining her.

"There are heroes yet in this land!" she yells to Minsc, firing a shining arrow at the gnoll charging at her.

(Vereran 2 takes 7 damage.)

Warry of whatever might be at the gate---the Red Mage, if Stella were to take a wild guess---she strafes away towards Minsc and the barrels in case it get blasted down.

She focuses on her connection to the stars, pushing her form even further, her indigo body growing faint, almost ethereal as she prepares to defend against the oncoming gnoll.

The commotion at the gate reminds Sheemish that they aren’t the only ones planning on invading the keep. And they were quickly running out of time.

"Stitch! Help the hamster man!" Sheemish shouts as he takes careful aim at the next gnoll.

Always go for the largest and ugliest ones first.

The burst of lightning burns hotter this time and its impact much more intense. A blinding light, a burst of heat and rancid smoke, and not much is left of the large gnoll when the view clears.

Round 3 Summary

The fight waxes poor for the gnolls. With the sun well above the horizon the temperature's been rising. The courtyard stinks of sweat and blood.

Sheemish's lightning strikes again from the tower, charring the gnoll dueling Runeson and hurling it, quite dead, against the wall of the keep.

Nearby, Stella manages to avoid her gnoll's attacks. Whether she dodged out of the way, or merely let the gnoll's weapon pass through her starry form without harm, is hard to tell. A moment later, Dieter's spear hits home and the gnoll falls, jaws snapping savagely at the spear shaft until it dies.

Within the pit, Aiwe finds Minsc gently cradling Dynaheir's quiet form. Boo seems to be nuzzling her cheek, and Stitch flutters nearby. The dark-skinned woman lives, but from the scratches and bruises she's sustained, she can't have much strength left. Aiwe's powerful healing spell surges, and Dynaheir's chocolate eyes snap open as she gasps. Minsc wastes no more time, helping his wychlaran to her feet and then up out of the pit.

The last gnoll in the courtyard, the lone archer, crouches behind its table and lets loose nervous, yipping guffaws. It lets some half-hearted arrows loose at Sheemish and Aiwe, but it's attention seems focused on the main gate, hopeful that its comrades will find a way through the barrier.

They don't. They burn instead.

Sulfuric fumes reach the courtyard as a wave of fire rolls over the gnolls outside the gate. One gnoll, half its face burned away, reaches pathetically through the portcullis bars, smoke barely hiding the forms of its burning allies. Then the gnoll is forcefully pulled away from the bars and into the smoke. It's pathetic whines turn to a bestial scream for just a moment, and then the sickening crunch of bone and more signal the end of the gnoll's life.

As the smoke begins to clear, three large canine forms can be seen tearing at the gnoll carcasses. Fire drips from their monstrous jaws, devilish horns curl back from their shaggy manes, and their eyes burn with merciless, unending flame. Hell hounds.

There's a whirl of air above the gate's parapet, and, as predicted by many of the companions, Edwin the Red Wizard of Thay teleports into view.

Light glints off the wizard's nose-ear chain as he looks down on the scene playing out in the courtyard. He leans a slender, ornate staff. "(Oh good, the simians have done much of my work for me.) Hail, brave friends! As a gesture of my goodwill..." Edwin gestures with the staff, and a bolt of flame zips down to strike the gnoll archer (GB2 takes 16 dmg). It dies screaming, consumed by arcane fire.

The hell hounds, having thoroughly finished off the gnolls beyond the gate, begin to pace restlessly behind the portcullis, their hot breath heating the iron bars as they pass. Their flame-eyes seem fixed on Dynaheir.

"Hand the witch over to me, and I'll let the rest of you live." Edwin makes the request sound totally reasonable, as though asking them to come along for a cup of tea. "(I hope they resist. I really do...)"

Dynaheir, dressed in a dark purple robe that's obviously seen better days, scowls up at the Red Wizard. "Thou seekest me out even here, Thayan?" Her accent is thick, and her words an antiquated Common. "I doubted thy masters would extend thy leash so far, but perhaps they prefer to keep a continent between themselves and such a rabid dog."

As she speaks, Dynaheir's hand subtly drops behind her back, fingers forming a mystic symbol. Her other hand fiddles with the hem of her robe. And Stella suddenly hears a whisper from the air beside her. "I'll need a component pouch... or an arcane focus... quickly! Thou art a wizard, no?"

The wychlaran's smirk grows stronger as Minsc pulls himself from the pit to stand beside her (though much taller, obviously!). The two, reunited, seem to complement each other.
Jun 5, 2023 4:27 am
Edwin seems to lose some of his cool at Dynaheir's insults. "I did not address you, witch! I am speaking with the brave 'adventurers' here! (Yes, most brave. Most foolish. How foolish? We shall see...)" One hand pulls irritably at his short beard, and he looks around at the companions. "Deliver her to me, or join her in a gruesome fate. What say you?!"
Jun 5, 2023 5:53 am
"What proof can you offer for our safe departure?" Aiwë calls up to the wizard. "Our lives are the better deal over what the witch has offered, but I don't trust your... dogs."

Looking over at Sheemish would ruin her confident air, so instead she sends a prayer to Torm that some people in the group have developed a modicum of faith in her.

While Aiwë talks to the wizard, Stella shakily takes out her healer's kit then quickly tends to Minsc's wounds, applying a salve and bandage with deft hands to the gashes in his arms. She then tries to do the same with Dynaheir's scrapes and bruises.

(Minsc regains HP equal to 8 + his number of maximum Hit Dice. Dynaheir regains HP equal to 9 + her number of maximum Hit Dice.)

As she cuts bandages with knife, she tries to cut the cord of her necklace, bearing a star-shaped crystal, then tries to slip it into the witch's hand while wrapping a bandage.

Calliope taught her a bit about misdirection, but while she was practiced with bandages, subtle tricks were not her forte...she desperately hoped it would be enough.

The hell hounds snarl at Aiwe's mention of them. It would seem they're more intelligent than mere beasts.

Edwin's smile shows a couple of shiny, golden teeth. "Of course, the witch has nothing to offer you, except perhaps a knife in the back once she has the chance." With slippered feet he absently kicks a bit of rubble from his perch on the gatehouse parapet. "Well. I am sure this broken excuse for a castle has some holes you can scurry away into. (Yes, scurry like the scabby rats they are...) Leave now, then, and I swear you are not worth my time to pursue. I have better things to do! (Like have my pets scour the flesh from the witch's bones. This I shall enjoy!)"

The wizard thumps his staff eagerly on the stone parapet. "Go, then! My patience wears thin!"

He doesn't seem to notice or care about any of Stella's actions.

Dieter sneaks a look at Aiwë then the dynaheir, he didn’t know her but he felt a duty to her. He took a deep breath in and willed strength in his veins and sinew hoping Aiwë had a plan. Suddenly being crushed by an ogre or ran through by a sword spider seemed preferable to immolation.

Okay, I decided to let Stella's Entangle spell happen first, but looks like it didn't stick, unfortunately. But at least Stella can still act this round!

Edwin is on the parapet above the gate. It's currently difficult terrain on top of there due to Entangle.

The hell hounds are about to come through the gate and into the courtyard.

There's some sort of earth/rock creature named Terros that looks like a big hand and arm protruding up from the ground and holding the portcullis up to let the hounds through. It's action this round is to hold up the portcullis.

I'll shortly post a short thing from Dynaheir that'll give some more information about Terros.

Dynaheir's grip tightens on the crystal that Stella slipped her. "Edwin is a master conjurer; it would seem he has conjured an earth elemental to aid him today. Such creatures rarely give their service willingly. Break his concentration, and the elemental may turn on him."
Jun 6, 2023 3:40 am
Stella scrambles up the ladder, bow hovering after her. Could the hell hounds climb?

As she crests the ladder onto the parapet by the barrels, she draws and fires the bow, then calls upon the Firbolg once more. The vines of stardust above the gate writhe and twist, threatening to entangle the Red Wizard again.

As she does so, however, the top rung of the ladder snaps and she nearly falls, thwarting her efforts.

She grits her teeth in frustration. Telepathically, she calls for her brown owl. It rises from behind the wall screeches and swoops down at Edwin, claws outstretched.

(If Edwin drops his staff, the owl will try to pick it up and fly above Stella's position. If Edwin does not, or if that's not possible until next round, the owl will take the Help action for Imoen, then swoop away and behind a parapet for cover.)

Facing a wizard is bad enough, but facing one that can fly in such an open area is definitely NOT what the party needs right now. Sheemish rushes from the tower along the ramparts, negating some of his cover to get near enough to act.

Reaching out a gauntlet, a barbed metallic whip shoots out from the the blacksmith hand. In an instant it wraps around the now empty hand of the mage, and with a tug it pulls the mage a few feet down the battlements. The damage is minimal, but hopeful the advantage is worth it.

Mage takes 1 damage, but is pulled 10 ft towards Sheemish, and hopefully away from his dropped staff.

Then she backs up, putting herself squarely between Stella and the Hounds.

Round 1 Summary

The hell hounds surge forward and through the gate with surprising speed, all three bearing down on Dynaheir. But Minsc intercepts them, the gnoll chieftess' greataxe in his meaty hands. He delivers a nasty swipe to the flank of one of the hounds, and all three turn on him, jaws opening to release waves of lava-like spittle (Minsc takes 50 fire damage). The burning torrent is nearly enough to bring down the big man, but he manages to keep his feet and swing his axe with enough strength to remove the head of one of the hounds (H1 takes 48 slashing damage and dies).

But there's nothing Minsc can do to protect his charge from the mighty wizard above. Edwin holds his staff high and the tip of it forms a growing ball of intense fire. With a flick of the staff he sends the ball down into the courtyard straight towards Dynaheir (Edwin casts Fireball). The fireball detonates just in front of the wychalaran, and the resulting flames spread outward to catch scrambling companions! Made of the Hells' flames themselves, the hell hounds don't flinch.

The courtyard fills with fire and heat! And yet... the adventurers surging up onto the battlements don't feel any pain, or even discomfort. Strangely, there seems to be a barrier of air around each of them, as though some protective force has sculpted pockets of safety from the fireball's area. Then the licking flames all go immobile, as though frozen in place. A moment later, they're all sucked back into their source, the sphere of fire just a foot in front of Dynheir's face. Dirty sweat streaks the wychlaran's face, but her hands work the fireball like potter's clay, shaping it this way and that (Dynaheir casts Counterspell).

While Minsc does his best to hold off the hell hounds nearby, Dynaheir spreads her arms wide, momentarily releasing the fireball, then pushes forward with both hands up toward Edwin. The orange-red flames turn super-charged blue, and a crack of thunder reverberates through the courtyard as she transmutes the fire into electricity, shooting a mighty bolt of lightning at the Red Wizard (Dynaheir casts Lightning Bolt).

Edwin's eyes widen in surprise, but he manages to get off a quick spell and deflect the lightning up and out toward the sky (Edwin casts Counterspell). With a furious glower on his face, he begins to throw himself into yet more spellcasting, when Dieter's spear strikes the hand holding his staff! The Thayan wizard reflexively drops the staff, wringing his bloody hand. With growing panic, Edwin reaches down to recover it, but Imoen's arrow suddenly sprouts from his shoulder, staining his crimson robes with the deeper red of blood.

Lips sputtering curses, he tries again to grab his staff, but finds it no longer there! Stella's owl flies nearby with the staff gripped tightly in its talons.

At this point the adventurers are drawing close, and Edwin has no desire to engage with them in close quarters. Before he can magic himself away though, Sheemish's spiked chain snaps out and catches on his robe, pulling the wizard off the parapet and down hard onto the party's battlements in a tangle of red robes (Edwin takes 6 fall damage and is prone).

Just in front Dieter and Runeson.

Edwin frantically rips his robe away from his face and looks up to see the two warriors. His shrill scream is cut off by Aiwe's spell settling into place, blanketing the area around him in magical silence. Thus, there's no sound when Runeson's enchanted morning star swings down onto the unfortunate mage (Edwin takes 10 damage from Runeson).
OOC:
I figured in this instance that since Edwin is pulled into Runeson's reach (after Runeson Dashed) that Runeson could go ahead and make an attack, and to save time I rolled it myself.
Things don't look good for Edwin, prone amid the party's strongest-of-arm and unable to speak spells... but what kind of wizard would he be without a trick or two up his sleeve?

Edwin's entire form flashes white for a moment, and then a rectangle of light opens on the rubble beneath him (His Contingency spell goes off now that he's bloodied, triggering Dimension Door). He falls through it and it closes up after him. A moment later, those outside the area of silence can suddenly hear Edwin's screaming again as the rectangle of light opens in the air across the courtyard and over the opposite battlements. Edwin lands flat on his back (Edwin takes 5 fall damage and is prone). Wheezing, he tries to get to his feet but trips on his own torn red robe and topples over the side of the wall, falling (always falling) into the castle's courtyard (Edwin takes 3 fall damage and... is prone!).

Nearby, wounded Minsc struggles with the remaining two hell hounds, and Dynaheir is on her knees and holding her head in her hands. No doubt casting such mighty spells in her condition has incapacitated her.

There's a resounding slam as the portcullis falls back into place. The earth elemental pulls itself up entirely from the ground, towering at least 10 feet high, and takes rumbling steps over to the fallen wizard.

Edwin shakily gets to his feet once more (not prone!). "No! You are mine, Terros! You will do my bidding!" The earth elemental pauses, dust falling cracks in its stone as it trembles in place. Edwin lifts a bloody finger. "My will is unbreakable! Now, protect me from these insipid fools!"

Terros turns slowly towards the companions, blocky arms rising with menace.
OOC:
The group learns that Edwin's concentration can't be broken by damage.

Round 2 Player Phase!!
OOC:
So let's see if we can get the zones right...
Edwin is in the Red Zone, far side of the courtyard.
Terros is in the Blue Zone, in the courtyard between Edwin and the hounds.
The hounds are in the Green Zone, in the courtyard with Minsc and Dynaheir.
As far as I can tell, the rest of the party is on the battlements, which is the Purple Zone (except maybe Aiwe, who might still be in the courtyard).

So you can get to the Green Zone with your movement.
You can get to the Blue or even Red Zone with the Dash action, but you might get opportunity attacks from hounds and/or Terros, so watch out.

Stella's owl flies overhead and drops Edwin's staff into her outstretched hand.

She's disoriented by all the fire and teleportation, but when she spots Edwin, gives up on the vines and elects to use her bow.

Distract him! she urges her familiar. The brown owl swoops past the hellhounds and elemental towards the wizard.

Stella leans Edwin's staff on the parapet, then draws her bow, swirling stardust forming a radiant arrow before it goes streaking across the battlefield.

The brown owl flaps and screeches in front of Edwin's face, then flaps slightly upward, right before the shining arrow strikes true.
(Edwin takes 12 radiant damage, even if he casts shield. One person gets advantage on an attack against him next round.)

She draws another shot, but the stardust explodes scattering. As the stardust settles on her starry skin, she sees herself fading away, invisible. Huh. Facinating!

The urge to stab, hack, break bones, and feel the spray of blood on his face and hands is overpowering. This isn’t the feeling of a warrior or apex predator he realizes but of a cornered rat that has gained the upper hand. Their goal is to rescue, and Minsc won’t retreat unless the woman is safe.

Sheemish rushes down the steps to the courtyard and leaps off partway through. Gauntlets at the ready, he slams his metallic fists into the ground once once again, a massive amount of energy releasing outwards in a thunderous wave knocking over debri and enemy alike. The flames of the hell hounds shrinking under the ripple of power. One hound is even pushed back from the force.

But the damage appears minimal in the end, as flames return to life. Sheemish grunts from the impact and from frustration at its lack of impact and gives a whistle. Every ready to help, Stitch zips in front of the the collapses women and emits a cloudy mechanicals mist from her wings. Within seconds a murky haze is between her and the hounds.

Hound 1 passes its save and takes 2 damage. Hound 2 fails, is pushed back 10 ft and takes 3 damage. Sanctuary is cast on women. Enemies attack her need to make a wisdom save or turn their attack elsewhere.

Round 2 Summary

Edwin lets loose a wad of bloody spittle as his back touches the castle wall. His dark eyes flit back and forth between his allies and his enemies, calculating...

Even badly wounded, Minsc does his best to protect Dynaheir. With a wicked smile on his lips and a glint of madness in his eyes, the tattooed warrior brings his axe home once, twice on one of the hell hounds (H2 takes 21 dmg). It isn't enough. The infernal beast leaps at Minsc, toppling him, fangs reaching for his face. Flat on his back, Minsc manages to get the haft of his axe up and between the hound's jaws, muscles straining to hold the monster at bay. Unfortunately, in such a situation the heroic Minsc has no defense against the second hound, which darts forward to close its maw around his throat (Minsc takes 18 dmg).

The hound lifts its head, and almost seems to grin with its bloody, sizzling teeth as it regards fallen Minsc. The man grasps weakly at his throat as his blood, breath, and life fade away (Minsc is dying).

Sheemish's leap and thunderous landing does little direct harm to the hell hounds, but one of them is pushed into the pit where Dynaheir was kept captive only a minute ago (H2 takes 6 fall dmg and is prone in the pit).

Stella's shining arrow flies toward its target, causing shadows in the courtyard to flicker and sway. Edwin raises a hand to conjure a magical shield for protection (Edwin casts Shield)... and the arrow bursts through the barrier and buries itself into Edwin's robes, and the light spreads out all over him and his clothes.

Terros lifts a large piece of rubble and hurls it at Stella's place on the battlements, but its aim is off. The projectile collides with the wall well below the protective battlements, causing a rumble of stone, but no real damage.

Hunched over and breathing ragged, the Red Wizard refocuses on his true goal: the death of Dynaheir. With pained words he gathers a massive amount of arcane energy and hurls it in the form of a fire bolt at the kneeling woman (Edwin casts Fire Bolt). She collapses with an agonized scream, fiery magic coursing up and down her body (Dynaheir takes 45 dmg and is dying).

Edwin clutches his head as Aiwe's spell tries to take hold of his mind. His mental defenses slam into place, locking the bard out. "No! No! I win, you mewling idiots! The wychlaran dies at my hand. And I will live to hound you another day! (Hound! Good one, I am so clever...)"

He flicks his fingers and teleports through the double-doors and into the keep's interior (Edwin casts Misty Step). "Let no one through, Terros! I may even reward you well when I summon you next..." The earth elemental stomps into place before the keep's entrance, blocking the doorway as Edwin limps away.

But in this moment Stitch is burdened with glorious purpose, and her bolt of energy breaks through his magical defenses.

Edwin Odesseiron, Red Wizard of Thay, is no more!

The rest of the party are immediately clued in to Stitch's success as the two hell hounds dissolve into a sulfurous stink. Terros' time, too, on this plane comes to an end. Arms lifted to smash at the invisible Dieter who tried to sneak past him, the earth elemental crumbles to dust.

Stella yelps at the crashing boulder, then watches in terror as Minsc and Dynaheir are scorched and burned until they fall. "No!!"

She trembles, eyes wide with a panicked magenta. She looks to Awie or Dieter, but sees no one—they were invisible. She squeezes her eyes shut, breathing heavily.

She had to move!

Suddenly, the growling of the hell hounds stop and the cracking of the earth elemental ceases. She looks up to see Aiwë and Sheemish helping the hulking warrior and witch to their feet. She wasn't the only one who could heal.

She sighs with relieve and slumps to the parapet, knocking Edwin's staff over. She'd have to identify that and see if it had any special properties. It was good he didn't have a backup arcane focus; the silence was useless with his teleportation...how had he done that, she wondered?

Stella looks over to where Imoen was, still invisible, and gives a friendly wave. "Nice shots!" she calls out, only then realizing she was invisible too. In a moment, though, her glowing joints and indigo coating dissolve off her body, as does the invisibility. If only she could do that on purpose, she thought.

She pulls herself to her feet and makes her way down the stairs to Minsc and gives a relieved smile. She practically dragged her friends into this one, and Sheemish especially wasn't happy about it at first, but they certainly gave it their all.

Minsc sits up happily with Aiwe's help. "Villainy has been thwarted today, right Boo?!" The hamster squeaks from somewhere under Minsc's armor. "We both thank you and your friends from the bottom of our hearts... and though Boo's heart may not be very deep in his little body, I assure you that he feels his gratitude just as deeply as mine!"

All told, the warrior seems unphased by near-death experiences.

"Dynaheir! My wychlaran, forgive me for taking so long to free you!" He kneels reverently before Dynaheir as Sheemish heals her. "Boo and I will accept whatever penance you deem fit to inflict upon us! Though... I ask most humbly that you inflict his share upon me..."

Dynaheir gasps as Sheemish's ministrations take effect. She holds up a severely burned hand and examines it as the blistered skin returns to a normal dark hue. "Thy magic is most extraordinary!" she murmurs to the blacksmith. "I have never seen its like..."

When Minsc prostrates himself before her, Dynaheir fishes around in her pocket and produces a handful of bread crumbs, which she holds out expectantly towards the man. Boo soon makes an appearance, small pink nose aquiver with curiosity. The hamster scuttles across the ground and to Dynaheir's feet. She laughs and lowers the hand with food, letting Boo climb onto her palm and begin to chow down.

She turns her dark brown eyes onto her tattooed protector. "Minsc. Thou knowest that I respect thy courage and loyalty. Rise, brave warrior. Surely in the coming days we will return to Rashemen, where I will tell the council of thy great deeds, and thou shalt be admitted to the Ice Dragon Berserker Lodge with pride. I need only complete mine own mission in these lands first."

The wychlaran turns to the rest of the group. "I thank all of you for aiding Minsc and rescuing both of us. Ahem, all three of us, including Boo, of course." She attempts to straighten her charred purple robes. "If there is aught we can do for you, I ask that you allow us to do so."

She hands the staff to Sheemish. "Do you want this? It's classified as a Minor Staff of Fire. Attune to it and you can spray and sling fire with it. I can show you how to use it, if you want." She shrugs. "I'm not overly fond of fire, but I can keep it if you don't want it."

"Speaking of fire..." Stella draws out a couple few fire arrows and hands them to Imoen so she has three total. "Here's a few more. I should have given them to you earlier...Could have made the fight a bit easier," She sheepishly twirls a lock of hair around her own finger.

She draws out the wand of magic missiles. "Dieter!" She tosses it to him. "For when you run out of things to throw."

After redistributing magic items she takes a seat on a barrel, straightens her tattered skirt—she would need to get a new one—and opens up to search Edwin's spellbook.

It would take a lot of ink, costly components, to learn and practice these spells...she could hardly read his writing! She could probably decipher most of it, but it would take some trial and error. But if her count of her share of the party's newfound gold was right, she should have plenty to learn a few!

Her owl familiar lands on her shoulder and hoots softly. "You did great today! Thank you. We need a name for you, girl...Strix? No, that's for those horrid blood-sucking birds...Wirrow would like that, but how about...Noctura? Noctal? Noctalia? Yes, Noctalia! A beautiful name for a beautiful celestial bird."

She laughs. "Certainly better than 'Flumphy'," she says and scoffs. "Papa is so unimaginative...What kind of name for a flumph is 'Flumphy'? That'd be like calling you 'Brownie' or 'Owly'." She chuckles and sighs. She did miss Zenithral's little floating familiar friend with its funny tentacles and eye stalks. And as she thought further, she found herself also missing...her father.

Her smile fades. She...missed him. And she didn't feel angry with him. It felt like...storm clouds had drifted away, revealing a clear stary sky. Had this quest for Minsc, and accepting that she wanted to be a hero done that? She lets a fond smiles creep onto one corner of her mouth and nods.

Yes, Stella thought. I think it did. She was letting who she was start to come from inside her now, not from someone else.

She sees Aiwë pass by. She quickly hops up from her seat on a barrel, straightens her skirt, then runs up to Aiwë with a hug. She steps back and give s bright smile, her eye stars sparkling yellow and white. "Thanks," she says simply. "For helping me start to believe in me. And in all of you."

Aiwë gives Stella a squeeze and a tusk-y grin. "Always, Stella! So, first a breather and then back to Nashkell. After that... how are you feeling about home? Going home doesn't mean you don't believe in yourself. There's plenty of hard things there, too."

Minsc beams down at Stella. "Being a hero is a busy time! You helped many people, and then you helped us. You are double the hero!" He leans down conspiratorially. "Any wise words you hear from Minsc's mouth are the words of Boo!"

Dynaheir is obviously weary from her captivity and the gnolls' treatment of her, but her smile as she looks on Minsc and Stella is genuine. "I am grateful Minsc was able to make friends while I was gone, and not only because thou and thy companions played such a large part in our rescue!"

When Stella asks after her mission, Dynaheir gives a slight shake of her head. "I would reward thy curiosity with answers, but such discretion is not my place. Perhaps one day, fair Stella."

The wychlaran hands Stella's star-shaped crystal necklace back to her. "I thank thee for entrusting this to me for a short while. In Rashemen we have a long history of seeking guidance from the stars. Holding it gave me courage." She meets Stella's gaze, noting the stars in her eyes. "Might I ask how thou didst gain this one?"

The party spends the rest of the day recovering from the injuries and hard travel of the last couple of days. The ruined castle offers shelter from whatever else might wander this coastal land, and the companions feel it's a safe place to camp for the night.

In the morning, Minsc and Dynaheir join the party in their trek back to Nashkel. Their progress is slower due to the lack of horses for the two Rashemi, but the trip goes smoothly. In a couple of days they find themselves in the frontier mining town once more...

Stella puts a hand to her mouth and giggles, then scratches the hamster behind the ears. "Well thank you, Boo. I'm glad you're both safe."

"Oh!" Stella had nearly forgotten she had lent her star-shaped arcane focus. Her 'starcane focus', Papa always called it. "A gift," she says with a smile, tying the cut cord around her neck and nodding her thanks. "I love the stars. I've always felt part of them. When I started studying with the local archmage, Mama and Papa commissioned it from some jewelers in the Ten Towns—north in the Icewind Dale," she explains fondly.

"I..." the white-haired girl purses her lips and stares at the ground. "...think I want to stay," she says, then nods slowly. "This is the first time I've felt this way." She looks up at Aiwë. "Like I can make a big difference, and that I'm starting to figure out who I am, you know?"

"Then we'll stay!" Aiwë grins. "You're incredible, and I know you'll keep doing great things!"

"I have never heard of this Icewind Dale. My land is far, very far, to the east, and also has frigid winds. It is considered inhospitable by most. But the sky at night is beyond description, the stars shine crisp and clear..." Her lips curve in a friendly smile. "Perhaps one day Minsc and I shall visit your home. And Boo, too!"

"And perhaps I will visit your land as well! The stars seem to be so different here, I can't imagine what they'd be like where you're from! Farewell, Dynaheir, and farewell Minsc! And you too, Boo!"
