Incidentally, when you first mentioned undead dragons, I thought you were exploring true polymorph to a dragon followed by ritual to dracolich as a path to immortality. It's not a terrible idea, but not as powerful as lichdom because there's less access to magic.

That's really not a terrible plan! But I was thinking about Lichdom for the villain, and an undead Ancient White under the villain's control. Two monsters working together with lair actions and Legendaries should be a real threat to a party.

Couple quick questions...

1. How am I looking for gear/money? At level 4, I feel like I'd have a little more than the starting equipment... but that's entirely your call.

2. How should we handle HP after level 1?

You're a student, so obviously you're broke! I'd say fairly little in the way of coin, let's say 50gp. But you've been conscripted by the army, so any non-magical gear you need. And I think you would have picked up a couple of magical trinkets, so pick two common magic items from this list.

For HP, either average per level or roll. If you re-roll, you may re-roll 1s.

Enduring Spellbook and Imbued Wood Focus as a staff (Mabaran Ebony, for a boost to necrotic damage) seem like the best picks.
