"Thank you, Sir," Tannis replies, offering up the best smile he can muster. Tannis will eat the egg and meats quickly, realizing just how hungry he was now that he has food in front of him. He will drink water from his own skin, not wanting anything clouding his mind as he collapses on the bed in exhaustion.

Having draw the heavy velvet drapes across the chamber's small windows, there is almost no light in the room as Tannis sinks into the soft bed. The castle is quiet. A clattering of horse hooves from the bailey is muted by the thick castle walls. Sleep takes Tannis quickly.

Tannis is sitting in the classroom. The through the open window the whole city appears to erupt into shouting. "War!" "Felin!" Tannis goes to the window. The city is quiet. He turns. Zanros is there, smiling. Another prank. Tannis goes to give Zanros a friendly clout, but finds he has cut Zanros' throat. Air gurgles and bubbles out of the gaping wound. The gurgling air sounds like speech. "Remember me". Tannis stumbles backwards. The bloodstained dagger drops from his hands and clatters on the wooden floor of the classroom. A pool of blood spreads from the dagger. Tannis steps backwards. He is falling backwards out of the window. Blackness.

Tannis is stood on the steps of the Royal Palace, dressed in the gold-trimmed robes of a master of Alnerwick Academy of Magic. There are crowds of people. Guards in shining armor. His classmates are there. A gentle breeze plays upon so many colourful banners. And upon Florithe's golden hair. Tannis stands in front of the king. The king smiles at him and pins a medal to his shoulder. His shoulder sears in pain. Blackness.

Tannis is standing on the front line of soldiers. His feet are stuck in mud. He has no staff. No spell book. The soldier to his left and right are his brothers and sisters, but they don't recognise him. The enemy forces are charging towards him. He has no staff. No spell book. The mud has turned to stone. His feet are trapped in stone. The charging enemies become a wall of fire. The fire engulfs them. Blackness.

Tannis wakes sharply, sitting bolt upright in bed, covered in sweat. He is in a stone-walled chamber, dimly lit through the cracks in the curtains and under the door. His staff is propped against the wall. Memories force themselves back on Tannis. He is in the keep at Southam. He survived the battle. He is alive.

Tannis will get into his bag, and look at the things he collected... laying them out on the bed, he touches each one and closes his eyes, remembering the faces of the previous owners.

The faces as he knew them in life. Energetic. Smiling. Laughing. As he remembers, his throat tightens into a knot and something punches him in the sternum from the inside.

Eventually, he collects everything back together. He cleans each spellbook and each foci, allowing his prestidigitation to remove the blood and grime of the battlefield, before securing them back in his bag. "I will not forget any of you," he says, his voice a whisper.

Cleaning his own clothing, he makes himself as presentable as possible before retrieving his staff and stepping outside of his room.

As Tannis leaves the room, he sees a serving girl, walking away down the corridor carrying a tray of crockery. Her light brown hair is tied with a white kerchief. She turns at the sounds of door.

"Oh hello dear. You must be the young Tannis Tobias told me about. My have you had a long sleep. I guess you must've needed it. I was told not to disturb you with breakfast - but there's a tray of food put aside for you in the kitchen. Would you like me to bring it? Also, the Governor wants to see you in his office when you're ready. Do you know the way? I can show you" she manages to say all of that without pausing for breath.

Tannis offers what he can muster for a smile. "I should see the Governor, but the food sounds wonderful as soon as our meeting concludes. I do know the way, don't worry about me. Thank you, miss."

With that Tannis retraces his steps, returning to the office and rapping on the door.
Mar 4, 2023 10:58 am
Denaothun welcomes Tannis into his Office. He is dressed in formal red robes and carries a black, sliver-topped cane. Tannis sits in one of the proffered red leather armchairs in front of the large paper-strewn desk. The room is dimly lit by a high castle window, the light supplemented by a solitary candle in an ornate gold holder on the desk. The room is lined with bookshelves, some of which look to be the records of Southam, and others to be Denaothun’s reading collection. The paper and books give the room a musty smell.

The Governor sits behind his desk and introduces himself formally as His Excellency Kidil Batsk Denaothun, Governor of Southam, the Soverbot Valley, Hildreth Marshes and surrounds.

"I’m glad to see you cleaned up. You have been asleep for more than a day, perhaps to be expected given what you’ve been through. It is now the 7th of Withertide. I trust you feel better."

He continues. "I have news. Danrer of your school. I have met him a few times. He reached out to me with his mind. He had been unable to contact the Eastern Army. He remembered I was nearby. King Brakrel’s forces defeated Lord Nuhmem at Redwick. Nuhmem was taken prisoner and a peace has been agreed. The Felin will forfeit a great swathe of land for their aggression."
Mar 8, 2023 2:39 pm
Upon hearing Danrer was alive, Tannis cannot repress a look of relief that someone else from his class had survived. The look turned to one of joy upon hearing peace has been established. "Considering everything that happened, I feel like this is fantastic news Your Excellency. The price paid was steep, but peace is always a welcome outcome. I am also pleased I was able to deliver a warning that was perhaps not needed... as that is a far better scenario than the reverse."

A solemn darkness flits across Tannis' features as he seems to lose focus for a moment. As quickly as it appeared, it vanishes, leaving Tannis to ask, "Forgive me, but I've never survived a war before... I am at something of a loss for what comes next, Your Excellency. Do I... do I just go back to school?"

Tannis cannot help but feel both loss and lost in the wake of the battle. Like a rudderless boat, there is a powerful feeling of directionless in light of everything that befell him. His class is, effectively, gone. Denrar is alive, but even their teacher was lost. Is there even a school to return to? Should he return home to check on his family? His nightmare had left him concerned about their well-being as well.

What was supposed to happen next? The only thing Tannis knew in the moment was that his classes had never covered this particular topic.

OOC:
Sorry I posted in the background thread so you may not have seen it - Danrer is the Arch Master of the Academy. I'll keep the background info in OOC boxes from now on. Probably should also mention that King Brakrel III is the King of Newbore, and Lord Nuhmem is Lord of the Dominion of Felinland, although that might've been obvious from the context
"It is interesting that you should ask about going back to your school. I was going to come on to that"

Denaothun pauses. He looks uncomfortable. His aged brow grows more furrowed.

"The King..."

He pauses again.

"The King takes great pride in his victory over the Felin at Redwick"

He pauses.

"A victory that he doesn't want to have overshadowed..."

"I have been asked... Ordered in fact... I have been ordered to keep the defeat of the Eastern Army under wraps. And you likewise. On pain of death..."

"You are not welcome to return to Newbore City. Or to the Academy..."

"Denrar is very sympathetic to your situation, he's a very reasonable man, but the King is adamant. Denrar will contact you... explain it better than I can..."

"You are welcome to stay here for a time... I realise these events will have been hard on you..."

OOC:
No no, that was my B. For some reason, I focused on last names. Sternova, I'd have placed immediately.
Any joy or relief Tannis may have felt was gone as quickly as it manifested. "So... my reward... for having my classmates and teacher killed, and barely surviving to warn others... is to be a pariah..."

Tannis falls silent, and seconds turn to uncomfortable minutes. Eventually, he continues. "The worst part, is they won't even be labeled heroes who sacrificed for that peace. The King could easily honor them as examples of citizens who gave their all to ensure peace in the land... heroes... but instead, they just... what, vanished? Went for lunch and never returned? Got sick at a school of magic and no one could heal them? They had families and loved ones. Will those left behind even be told?"

Tannis relaxes his grip on his staff when he realizes his knuckles are turning white. He doesn't relax his jaw, however. "Forgive me, Your Excellency. I know this is not your decision, and you have been most accommodating. Thank you, sincerely, for your generosity. This is... just a lot to take in, in light of the past few days. I will wait for Headmaster Sternova to contact me. That seems to be my next step. Should you need me, I am at your service Your Excellency."

Tannis stands, and unless the governor has anything else for him he will return to his room.
Mar 12, 2023 4:32 pm
As Tannis stands to leave, Denaothun adds "Ceta and Luth. They went to the marshes. They found the battlefield. There were ghouls still there, picking the bones of the fallen clean of flesh."

"I know you tell the truth." he kneads his forehead with his fingers "I'm sorry it took these events to teach you that the truth often has no place in this world"
Mar 12, 2023 5:28 pm
"Truth always has a place in this world, Your Excellency. Always." Tannis' voice is flat, cold, but also firm. With that, he leaves the office and returns to his room.
Mar 13, 2023 7:16 am
After a short time of waiting in his room, Tannis hears a voice in his head. "Tannis, this is Master Sternova. Have you spoken yet with Denaothun? If you have and are ready, I will form a telepathic link with you"

The voice is instantly recognisable as Master Sternova from the times Tannis has heard him addressing the school, or the few times they have interacted personally. From some brief practices in class, Tannis recognizes that this is a Sending spell, and that he can respond with a short phrase.
Mar 13, 2023 11:30 am
Tannis can't shake the feeling that he won't like this conversation much.

"Yes Sir, we have spoken. I am ready."
Mar 14, 2023 11:04 am
Although Tannis had experienced the feeling of a Sending spell before, when Arch Master Sternova appears Tannis's mind it is an altogether difference experience. Not words but presence. And a richness of senses.

Tannis sees himself in Sternova's office in the Academy, standing before the large wooden desk. Sternova is congratulating Tannis on being the first in his class to master the Misty Step spell. Sternova is holding a written commendation from Gavarenth. The smell of the office is acrid, one of the master's experiments bubbles away in a corner, belching forth dense smoke that clings to the floor.

The scene ripples as if a single drop of water had landed on Sternova. Tannis sees Sternova sitting on canvas chair in a dark tent. The walls of the tent are made of heavy cloth, dyed purple. Behind Sternova is a camp bed and a small chest.

Sternova looks weary. He was old when Tannis last saw him, but he looks yet older.

"Hello Tannis" the words come from the image of Sternova, and yet echo around Tannis' head.

"I trust Denaothun has been looking after you. And that you have recovered from your injuries."

"These are difficult times we live through. To be attacked so brazenly by the Felin. For you to see battle at such an age. For us both to lose so many friends."
Mar 15, 2023 5:14 pm
Tannis stands, with his hands behind his back. He's a little unsure what the proper protocol for a meeting like this is. He fights the urge to look around, choosing to focus on the Headmaster while he speaks.

"Yes Sir. The governor has been most hospitable, and I am very thankful for his kindness. I am well, physically, Sir. I hope you are well also, this whole ordeal is trying in ways I could not have fathomed a fortnight ago. I do not envy the burden you are under, Sir."

Tannis falls silent, not sure if he should continue, but in the end decides it would be best.

"Governor Denaothun broke the news about the King's decision, and that I will not be returning to school. He also said you were given no choice in the matter. The King could easily paint my classmates and teacher as heroes who sacrificed for their nation, celebrating them as part of the victory and honoring their memory. Instead, he has chosen to tell a lie of omission and threaten to kill anyone who speaks the truth.

My classmates had families, Sir. Will they even be told the truth, or will they live out their days never knowing what happened to their child who simply... vanished?"

Tannis shifts uncomfortably, falling silent as he waits for Headmaster Sternova's reply. Perhaps he went too far... and yet, he cannot help but feel as if he hasn't gone far enough.

Sternova's face hardens in response to Tannis's outburst.

"I understand your frustration, but it is the cruel hand of fate that has ordained this outcome, not the King. What could he do? The victory at Redwick was already shared with the people when the news of your defeat reached us. Should the king dampen the spirits of the nation? Should he smother the belief of the people? He had no choice but to keep those events from the record."

"But we will find a way to honor those that lost their lives. Few knew where the armies marched. We will add their names to the list of the dead of Redwick. Although their sacrifice was in vain, it will not be forgotten."

The hardness drops. There is pity in his eyes.

"It is the King's decision in respect of you that most troubles me. And I did argue your case... He doesn't like loose ends. He would see it as a liability were you to attend the Academy and freely walk the streets of Newbore City. A potential thorn in his side."
Mar 15, 2023 8:11 pm
"The King obviously has an issue with honesty," Tannis mutters, without even realizing what he was saying until it had already escaped his lips.

The hell with it.

"Gods forbid anyone tell the people their King lies."

Closing his eyes, Tannis takes time to force the muscles in his jaw, neck, and shoulders to relax when he realizes how much he tensed up.

When he continues, his voice isn't as hard. "Forgive me, Sir. As you said... frustration. But I digress. I am glad the others will be honored, and their families will get closure. I also thank you for arguing on my behalf, I have no doubt you did all that you could.

I guess now I just have to figure out what to do next. Almost everyone I know is dead, I've become a pariah, I am limited to the clothes on my back and the knowledge in my head, and I'm not even certain I can go back to the village my family lives in since I may endanger them by making them into "loose ends." At least Southam is lovely this time of year."

Tannis heaves a sigh and shrugs at no one in particular.

"I'm sure your family would be safe, but you... " he pauses, "you should know that your brother lies amongst the fallen at Redwick. He did his King and country proud, leading the charge on the left flank. He will be greatly honored for his valour."
Mar 16, 2023 1:15 pm
"...Is there anything else I should know, Sir?"

The tone of his voice, whether he intends to or not, conveys that Tannis is done with the conversation.
Mar 16, 2023 5:12 pm
"I, er.." his voice falters "I'm sorry. I know I have only added to your woes. And perhaps I am not the best person at communicating these things..." his voice trails off.

"There is something else"

"I hope to be able to help you in some way. And I, er, also, er, would have a favor to ask"
