Cyre ir’Wynarn
"It’s better to listen to the commander. They know what’s best. I do what I’m told.", Cyre says quietly, then quickly changes the subject to defending your group. "Oh, the ballistae are so much fun! And those fancy cannons too! I had a lot of practice. The crew was so happy with my aim. If you can load them, I can aim and fire them!"

"I don’t know much about how to fix things. Two of my spires were broken in the explosion, they hold the Wind in a ring for me.", She thinks for a moment. "There was an elf before the magic. He took care of the crystals and my matrix and made repairs that I couldn’t heal myself. He was like your gnome friend. Always so many gadgets. I wished he would teach me, but he wouldn’t."

As darkness envelops the ship, Cyre excitedly proclaims, "Watch this!". All around you, the dormant Elemental torches spring to life, bathing the interior of the ship in warm light.

The Zarantyr’s Light settles into a shallow meadow in the Thornwood with Cyre in tow. The ships stop about thirty feet from the ground and the captain presses a button on a very large iron rod and the Zarantyr suddenly stops moving. The captain then orders the elemental be stowed and the airship’s pale blue ring is pulled into the ship. The Meadow is now left in the waxing blue light of Rhaan.

Faeris has since woken up and is somber and withdrawn. He helps Jean tend to Kamran, who seems to be improving, but still unconscious. Rune appears to have calmed slightly. Still confined, he watches everyone that enters the crew quarters with suspicion.

Earic joins 37 for the first part of the watch. The captain has everyone decide which ship they wish to stay aboard as he will be retracting the gangway to protect Cyre. Jean and Faeris bed down in the common area below deck of the Zarantyr. Sloane chooses to stay in the meeting room aboard Cyre. She drags the body of a young elf out onto the main deck and then sets her bedding in front Cyre’s door.
OOC:
Let me know how you want to set up or if anyone will relieve Earic.

37 will stand watch on the Warforged Airship, and while he won't force Earic to choose one way or another, but he will encourage him to stay on the Zarantyr -- just to be safe.

If Earic stays at the stern and 37 stays at the bow, they should easily stay in sight of each other (likely even close enough to chat).
Aug 5, 2023 3:25 pm
Seeing both Earic and 37 already at the watch posts, Kleber finds himself unsure of what to do next. Deciding to board the Zarantyr, he walks aimlessly within until he reaches the crew's quarters. There he notices Rune's gaze upon him, and decides decides to chat with the man.

"Hey, Rune. Finally come back to your senses huh? Care to explain about what happened back there? The fog messed with all of us, but your case was pretty rough"

Gzizmix will ask 37 to wake him for second watch before settling down for some sleep.
OOC:
Since we were traveling for some time would it be ok for Gzizmix to have placed Magic Mouth ritual enchantments around Cyre? Or he can do it before going to bed. The trigger set so if anyone other than the party and crew of Zarantyr’s Light gets within 30' it calls "Halt, who goes there!"

Rune
Rune is reading quietly in the quarters as Kleber enters. He scowls at Kleber’s questions. "The fog showed me the truth about our ‘cargo’, Kleber. I’ve seen what will happen if that creature is allowed to live. Merrix d’Cannith will seize her and the unholy offspring he creates from that colossus will be the death of us all."

His eyes are full of hatred as he continues gravely, "I cannot allow that. The Captain doesn’t believe me, though. He thinks it was all a dream. That’s why I’m stuck in this room until the cargo is brought to New Cyre. I’ll respect his wishes, but I’ll have no part in completing this delivery."

With that, he goes back to his reading.
OOC:
The spell is perfectly valid and is permanent until dispelled. So, go for it. Let me know who you want to limit Rune’s access too.
Aug 6, 2023 12:39 am
Gzizmix spent some time placing enchantments spread throughout Cyre, about 25 feet from each other. The enchantment will cry alarm if any but the party or the other ships crew, save Rune, get within 30' of the ship. He also places a few on the doors and hallways of the ship. He changes the enchantment so it will cry alarm if anyone tries to enter the engine room or Cyre's cabin without him, or if he tries to enter alone. Informing the others of the precautions before bedding down Just let me know and I can remove the spell. But for now I think security is the best practice.
Aug 6, 2023 12:50 am
With only a few minds in proximity on the ship, Malbor is more easily able to focus his mind to listen to what is actually being said and to put together coherent sentences. It had been some time since he had experience such an absence of mental clutter and he found it most welcome.

I agree. We must prepare for the possibility, nay, likelihood of attack. Now that things have calmed, I may be better able to focus and control my abilities which should help.
I would like to find out more about this sorceror if possible but I'm not sure how we can do that now unleas any of the crew have some insight.

Everyone settles in for the night. Earic stays aboard the Zarantyr at 37’s suggestion. Faeris agrees to take the third watch and tries to get some rest. Jean collapses exhausted and is nearly instantly snoring. The Captain remains in his quarters on the top deck.

The first two watches pass without issue. Rune remains in the quarters and gets sleep with the rest of the crew.

Faeris relieves Gzizmix, joining 37 in the third watch, but remains aboard Zarantyr. As dawn approaches, Camran begins screaming in pain. His clothes tear away from his body as if shredded by an invisible creature. Several claw marks begin to appear across his back, they do not appear as wounds however. Rather they are instantly scarred as if old wounds. As a final scarred mark appears on his face, Camran bolts awake, repeatedly mumbling, "The darkness is with us always…"

The mumbling continues into the early morning before Camran goes silent and finally accepts a cup of warm tea from Jean. Due to this, Captain Vren delays the departure until late morning. He informs your group that the return trip would likely take four days as he would be piloting alone.
OOC:
You all get a long rest. The day ahead looks bright and sunny as Sloane activates the elemental and the Captain gets underway.

The day progresses slowly. You notice towing substantially slows your progress. Captain Vren moves from cloud to cloud in the hopes of hiding your progress. You notice he’s taking a more direct route to the southwest to save time. Through the afternoon, you see the mental toll the constant piloting takes on him. By late afternoon, he settles the airships into a ravine to take a short rest in his quarters. Earic follows him to have a discussion.

Meanwhile, Faeris, Jean and Camran begin the somber task of wrapping and moving the bodies of Cyre’s crew into the hold. After which they offer to teach your group how to load the ballistae. They’re also fascinated to see the elemental cannons aboard Cyre. Sloane spends the morning pouring over the cannons, trying to find insight on how they operate.
OOC:
I’ll need a group perception check each day of the journey. Let me if there’s anything you want to accomplish / research / investigate during the trip. By the end of today, we’ll say you’ve attuned to any new items.

Kleber noticeably remains on edge after Camran's wounds, the claw marks reminding him of his own dream.

In an attempt to distract himself during the break, Kleber rummages through his belongings, absentmindedly tinkering with the crossbow's mechanisms and flipping through the blank pages of Cyre's captain's journal. Eventually, he stows away the weapons and gazes at the empty, yet slightly crumpled pages of the journal. Minutes tick by as Kleber continues to stare, and then realization strikes him. Gzizmix had already solved a similar problem with another diary.

The half-orc sheepish approach Gzizmix, handing over the journal, already expecting an earful for not doing it sooner.
OOC:
I forgot about the diary until Nic reminded me, sorry. Also someone should attune to those magical braces looted from the ambushers.

Gzizmix will familiarize himself enough to help out with the ballistae but will spend most of his time investigating Cyre and spending time with Sloane when she is working. As he roves he will continually cast mending on any damage to cyre he comes across. Both to learn how much he can affect the war forged and also to help restore as much or her former glory as possible.

Malbor eschews learning the workings of the weapons, feeling he is ill-suited to such a task. As usual, he tries to stay far from others, but decides that if their enemy is going to find them while flying, it would be wise to keep an eye on the skies. He tries to find an out of the way place on the deck with good visibility of the skies in as many directions as possible and keeps an eye out for anything out of the ordinary.

The early part of this beautiful day continues without much concern.

Faeris
Vice’s company cheers Faeris up from his malaise. He still won’t talk about his experience in the mists, but he seems back to his chipper self. He and Jean show Vice, Gzizmix, Kleber and 37 the workings of the ballistae and even fire a few shots.

Vice, having spent much of the journey learning from the crew feels very confident in his new found abilities. He spends his evenings juggling and dancing for the crew and even Camran seems cheered by his performances. The captain even sets a special time on the second evening to have a proper dinner with Vice’s entertainment as the focus. He has his crew set up the Cyre’s meeting room with another table and chairs so even Cyre can enjoy the performance. Vice takes special pride in the knowledge that it’s the first time he’s seen the captain take a moment to relax and enjoy the voyage.

Kleber is happy to stay below deck and practice on the ballistae within the safety of the walls. He feels he’s got the hang of his new hand bows as well. He takes time to get some target practice within the open space of Cyre’s gun deck.
OOC:
Will you wear them as part of your outfit? Let me know how that looks.
Sloane
Gzizmix makes his way around with Sloane. As he attempts to heal the damaged colossus, he finds his magic only works so well. The scorch marks on the Cyre’s "skeleton" are cleared and show telltale signs of scarring. The gnome tries it on the face of Cyre in her room and the years of grime reveal a brightly polished, metal face reminiscent of a cat. Though expressionless as any warforged, as he does this, he hears Cyre giggle. Her voice radiates through the network of her fibres and you hear her say "That tickles!". Sloane guesses that the damage to the warforged parts must be similar to how a warforged cannot regenerate lost limbs without more powerful magic. The fires appear to have caused permanent damage. Sloane also points out the spires and realizes Cyre is a component of the remaining air elemental’s spires, but not the previous fire elemental’s. She theorizes that the remaining fire spires could be utilized to replace the destroyed ones. She mentions they would need to find someone with knowledge of how to integrate Cyre into them. Without that, she would be unable to control the ring’s activation on her own and would need to rely on a crew to help whenever she needed to fly.

Cyre ir’Wynarn
When not on deck or learning from the crew, 37 keeps Cyre company. She delights in his stories and telling of his adventures. She admits that she’s never met another warforged in person. Only witnessed the assembly of other colossi, but they were not activated yet.

Earic Finnini
After Earic’s private discussion with the captain, he approaches Malbor. "I see you’re not interested in weapons. Perhaps instead, you would like to see how to pilot? I mentioned your ring to the captain and he is intrigued to see if it will work."

Your combined watches show clear skies with an occasional Lyrandar airship passing in the distance. At one point, Gzizmix swears he sees a blue dragon circling in the distance before flying off towards the west. Late in the evening of the second day, Malbor notices that a particular ship has appeared and remained on the edge of the horizon behind them. From this distance it’s hard to tell, but it doesn’t seem to fly the colours of House Lyrandar. Upon hearing this, Captain Vren takes extra steps to conceal his flight plan, but gravely comments, "If they have sought us out, they will likely know our destination."
Aug 10, 2023 1:05 am
Even the taciturn Malbor cracks a tiny wisp of a smile under his hood at the antics of Vice. He is surprised by the captain's invitation but has to admit to himself that he has become more curious about unlocking the potential of the ring. He takes the captain up on his offer and sees what he can learn about both the ring and the controlling of the ship.

Captain Vren

Captain Vren
As you enter his quarters, the Captain greets you with a look of fatigue. "Ah yes, come in, Malbor."

He brings the ships to a slow stop and presses a button on a large black beam in the ceiling. At once, you feel the swaying of the Zarantyr cease. "The Cyre is a military vessel and was designed to stay in the air. The Zarantyr’s Light is a merchant ship and not so lucky. You may have heard of immovable rods, well this beam can support far more weight and keeps the ship from falling when the ring is deactivated. Like an anchor really. It’s survived a few storms with relative ease."

He then shows you the lever that activates the ring and the steering wheel at the helm. He particularly highlights two glowing golden Siberys shards embedded into two of the handles on either side of the wheel. "It takes practice, but you need to be touching one of the crystals at all times to maintain your connection with him. Gripping both is recommended."

He gets you to hold the two handles. You notice the purple ring begin to glow and swirl. The elemental is very powerful and tries to resist your control, but you feel the ring directing your thoughts, the elemental doesn’t talk to you, it only awaits your command.
OOC:

As you grip the crystals, you feel a connection with the elemental at the Zarantyr’s core. This one feels very wild. More like bucking bronco, intelligent and stubborn.

The captain says, "The wheel is more like holding the reins. Use it guide the direction, but you give the command."

He turns off the anchor and you can feel the elemental tense up, awaiting your word. Sensing the tension, you take a moment to calm your nerves before asking the elemental to move ahead. As you do so, you can actually feel the power of the ring course through the vessel and the ships begin to move. You realize the immense mental strain it takes to control it as you guide it first to port, then starboard. You climb higher, all the while in a mental game of tug of war with this powerful entity.

You feel a strange clarity in all of it. The chaos of your mind seems to have prepared you for moments like these. The captain comments "He must like you. Rune would be jealous."

After only twenty minutes, you feel exhausted. The captain says, "Alright Malbor, that was excellent, but you need to take a break."

Vren invites you to stay and watch as he takes over. He runs you through his experiences and recommendations for the controls. You feel you can at least land the airship if you had to.

Could I get another round of perception checks?
