[Gameplay] 4. The Canny Jackal

Feb 5, 2023 5:24 pm
As the adventure begins, the PCs have finished exploring their assigned tombs in Wati’s necropolis. While delving in the Sanctum of the Erudite Eye, the PCs encountered a group of rival adventurers called the Scorched Hand, and discovered that the temple’s innermost vault had already been plundered. But these things are perhaps of little concern at this point, burdened as the PCs are with magical trinkets, art objects, and valuable information on Wati’s past. The PCs are likely interested in exchanging their hard-won treasures for gold, but this has become a difficult prospect when so many local vendors have been flooded with priceless relics recovered from the necropolis. In fact, the price of historical artifacts and art objects has dropped so sharply from their sudden availability that merchants in Wati are currently paying only 25% of the value of most items (instead of the normal 50%), and 75% of the value for trade goods and other valuable items (rather than the usual full value).

Fortunately, the Grand Mausoleum of Pharasma has entered into an arrangement with the Canny Jackal, a prestigious auction house and art gallery located at the western edge of the Sunburst Market, to hold an auction where private collectors and other interested parties can bid on items recently brought out of the necropolis. The Grand Mausoleum is also suffering an embarrassment of riches, having spent the past several days accepting percentages of adventurers’ proceeds as payments for healing and magical services—and occasionally confiscating items from adventurers who didn’t show the proper respect to Wati’s honored dead. To serve the community, the Pharasmins have extended invitations to those explorers who participated in the necropolis exploration as well, in hopes of both keeping many of Wati’s treasures within the city by seeing them sold to local collectors and helping coin remain in the local economy.

Once the PCs have left the necropolis following the events in "The Half-Dead City," they receive an invitation from a priest named Ptemenib at the Grand Mausoleum inviting them to the auctions at the Canny Jackal in 3 days. If the PCs want to get full value for their loot, they’d be well advised to attend the auction—and they might even find some items to purchase as well as sell. Until the auction, no major events transpire that require the PCs’ attention, leaving them plenty of time to rest from their adventures and wrap up any loose ends from the previous adventure. If the PCs wish to investigate the guest list, they can do so easily (see the following page for a list of the auction’s notable attendees). Ptemenib himself is difficult to contact—he’s busy with investigations for the church and is unavailable until the night of the auction. If the PCs decide not to attend the auction, they simply lose the opportunity to sell their treasures and look for gear there, before... Well, we'll get to that.

An evening at the Canny Jackal

The Canny Jackal hosts many of Wati’s richest collectors and historians, from local nobles to representatives from An, Tephu, and even Sothis. Auctions traditionally begin an hour after sunset, with a complimentary reception beforehand for the attendees to mingle with one another and enjoy refreshments. This evening, the Jackal is offering cheese-stuffed figs, hard-boiled peacock eggs, onion bread, onion-stuffed squid, fresh and dried fruit, spiced wine, and a sampling of 2,000-year-old honey recovered from one of the tombs. By the time the PCs arrive, several noteworthy members of Wati society have already gathered, and more filter in as the night wears on.

Two dozen attendees other eventually arrive besides the PCs, though only a handful are there to make serious bids.

Notable attendees include (including their wants which will be obvious upon conversing with them):

Baketra (female human): One of Wati’s richest and most notorious gourmands. Keen on forgotten treats or liquors, or artwork.

Basif Iosep (male half-elf): A wealthy coffee merchant and avid document collector, hoping to uncover records related to his own family.

Djat Masakhet and Intef Karam (male and female human clerics of Nethys): Representatives of Wati’s temple of Nethys, the Sanctum of Silver and Gold, looking for unique magic and lost temple records.

The Four Lanterns: A cocksure band of Andoren explorers who participated in the necropolis exploration, seek to sell their loot and buy masterwork equipment and practical magic items.

Khammayid Okhenti (male human): A young scion of the noble Okhenti family, newly returned from his studies in Oppara, eager to find expensive weapons to impress his family.

Manaat Heshwah (female human): The humorless representative of a Sothis trading house, keen on acquiring furniture, housewares, and pottery.

Maru Meshhoten and Namaru Meshhoten (both human females): An aging dowager and her granddaughter, looking for jewelry, clothing, and scandalous books and scrolls.

Menya the Whip (male human): Rail-thin and with an iron handshake, this ambitious young armorsmith is attending the auction to network though he’s also looking for a curious centerpiece for his new armor shop.

Ptemenib (male human cleric of Pharasma): Polite but distracted, Ptemenib is attending the auction as the Grand Mausoleum’s representative.

In addition, you see a few more representatives from other adventuring parties that were at the party at the Tooth and Hookah some time ago. 'The Cryptfinders' and 'Daughters of the Desert', the 'Dog Soldiers', and the 'Sand Scorpions'.
You have a chance here to network and gather rumours. You can make DC 10 Diplomacy checks to find out rumours.

Despite growing up in Wati the duskwalker had never been to the Canny Jackal before. There'd never been a real reason for her to attend an auction, or really the money.

At first she had been aprenhensive , trying to pick out one of her nicer sets of clothing to wear. As people reived however he lowly finds her element, chatting with people and sharing stories of the tombs with those interest, something she had been doing with her Dad's work colleagues for the last couple of days already.

Tabat wears his best cloak over his impressively polished armor. His mask remains strapped to his belt, so that he may smile and trade polite words with those gathered at the auction. His oddly brilliant eyes betray an otherworldliness to him, though they seem to accent his overall rugged, yet handsome, features.

He goes from person to person, greeting them and learning a little about them all.

He particularly talks up the Four Lanterns about the various Masterwork weapons their group intends to sell, in hopes the conversation might spark interest in them bidding.

You each drew three rumours, and there are only six, so I'll just post them all. No rolls required, between the four of you, you hear them all.

Once you have had time to mingle with the other guests, the auction will begin. If you have any goods you wish to put up for auction, you can assemble the items in lots, each containing as many or as few related goods as they desire. To get the best price, you can attempt to interest one of more of the attendees in their wares. If the items for sale relate to that buyer’s interests, a successful DC 20 Bluff or Diplomacy check is required. The DC goes higher the less they're specifically interested.

"Market value" is considered 50% of the listed price for most items, including armor, weapons, and magic items, and 100% of the listed price for valuable trade goods, including gems, jewelry, art objects, and the like. If the PCs successfully persuade a buyer, the items in that lot sell for full market value. Every additional buyer interested in the lot drives up the price by 5%. If no buyer takes specific interest in a lot, it sells for 90% of market value.

The auction proceeds with a lightning pace. About a half hour in, the Pharasmin priest Ptemenib leaves quietly. He's questioned at the side as the auctioneer continues uninterupted, and apologizes but politely excuses himself, claiming he has important church business to attend to.

You buy, sell, and watch the lots go through. There is an excitement, as entirely unique artifacts are gushed over, and large sums of money change hands from the distinguished collectors that have been brought together.

As the auction winds down, and you have collected your coins and paid for your purchases, the attendees milling about and congratulating each other on their victories, there comes a frantic pounding at the Canny Jackal's front door. As a servant moves to open the door, it suddenly collapses, reduced to splinters, and a horde of zombies shamble in, hungry for the blood of the living. Two of the servants, Ahteb and Hamapetra, lie injured, unconscious and dying by the side of the doors.

As Khadi floats around the auction chatting with others, she keeps an eye on the items going up as well. Some of the rumours other were talking about intrigued the cleric, though when someone started talking about someone attacking the scorched hand she stays quiet. It sounded like news they had been handed to the guard handed gone around yet, or had been warped. Common sense told her not to try and correct people and identify herself as one involved.

One of the items going up catches her eye. A belt to make one more hardy, but she hesitates. As a group they hadn't spoken about what was next. The lottery was over, and it had always been her intention to stop there. Settle back with the coin gained and help the community, perhaps see if the temple of Pharasma would let her aid with undead in the necropolis now she had a handle of her abilities. Would such a belt be of use?

Her hesitance causes it to go to another and the cleric eventually grabs some items that would aid in her healing. They would serve for whatever comes next whether helping allies in fighting undead, or just the commoners of the city who needed aid.

She is busy admiring the gloves, holding one hand up to the light to study the detail as the door breaks down. For a split second she freezes as the zombies start to pour in before she snaps out of it and the instincts born from the last week kick in.

'Khepri, looks like we aren't done yet!' She rushes forward to be closer to the door, l as light bursts from her scarab. She needs to help those on the floor but healing them will be little good if there are still zombies to knock them back down again.

COMBAT IS OVER.

"Quick!" Tabat shouts, "Help with the wounded!" He looks to those at his feet and immediately reaches to lay his hand upon one of them, but falters - which one? Could he possibly reach them both before they succumb to their wounds?

He feels decision weigh on his shoulders and feels his grief rise to the surface like a geyser as he throws his arms out to his sides - "LET ME SAVE THEM!" A wave of healing energy explodes from his body, basking everyone near enough in its radiance.

She stumbles to a stunned halt and just stares at the paladin for a moment, before breaking into a grin.

'When did you start stealing my tricks. Careful or I'll make you do all the healing form now on... She has a teasing down as she bend down to help one of the fallen up checking for injuries and calls out to everyone else. '... Is everyone okay? No one else hurt.' He expression sours as she looks at the zombies on the floor.

'How on Golarion did they get this far into the city.. I need to find Father, or members of the guard. We should alert them if there are others..

The two servants, Ahteb and Hamapetra, are healed and roused, standing up with your help. They're confused and frightened, but grateful. "Blessings, noble one. I did not think the door would come down like that," says Ahteb.

Looking out into the night, you see no waiting horde of zombies. Where they came from his unclear from within the Canny Jackal.

The occupants are beginning to panic, or at least look to leave quickly, worried about what is going on with their businesses and families.
Mar 6, 2023 9:06 am
Tabat takes a deep breath and lets out a short laugh. "I do not think that wise, Khadi - even that took quite a bit out of me. I don't rightly know how I did that, didn't know I could."

His attention is turned to the servants. "It's alright, I am only glad you both are safe. It is uncertain what is going on - quick, you both should leave to your families, just in case."

Turning to his companions, he adds - "We need to figure out what that was about. Perhaps it was a distraction?"
Mar 7, 2023 6:15 pm
'Everyone please remain calm. If you are going to check on your families, please go as groups just in case there are more. If you seen any guard, let them know what happened. ' On the one hand it would be better to have everyone stay here, but they likely wouldn't appreciate that.

'We should get word the Grand Mauseleoum, let them know. They can send out people o see if any overs have emerged...perhaps theres a break in the wall?'
