[Gameplay] 4. The Canny Jackal

Feb 5, 2023 5:24 pm
As the adventure begins, the PCs have finished exploring their assigned tombs in Wati’s necropolis. While delving in the Sanctum of the Erudite Eye, the PCs encountered a group of rival adventurers called the Scorched Hand, and discovered that the temple’s innermost vault had already been plundered. But these things are perhaps of little concern at this point, burdened as the PCs are with magical trinkets, art objects, and valuable information on Wati’s past. The PCs are likely interested in exchanging their hard-won treasures for gold, but this has become a difficult prospect when so many local vendors have been flooded with priceless relics recovered from the necropolis. In fact, the price of historical artifacts and art objects has dropped so sharply from their sudden availability that merchants in Wati are currently paying only 25% of the value of most items (instead of the normal 50%), and 75% of the value for trade goods and other valuable items (rather than the usual full value).

Fortunately, the Grand Mausoleum of Pharasma has entered into an arrangement with the Canny Jackal, a prestigious auction house and art gallery located at the western edge of the Sunburst Market, to hold an auction where private collectors and other interested parties can bid on items recently brought out of the necropolis. The Grand Mausoleum is also suffering an embarrassment of riches, having spent the past several days accepting percentages of adventurers’ proceeds as payments for healing and magical services—and occasionally confiscating items from adventurers who didn’t show the proper respect to Wati’s honored dead. To serve the community, the Pharasmins have extended invitations to those explorers who participated in the necropolis exploration as well, in hopes of both keeping many of Wati’s treasures within the city by seeing them sold to local collectors and helping coin remain in the local economy.

Once the PCs have left the necropolis following the events in "The Half-Dead City," they receive an invitation from a priest named Ptemenib at the Grand Mausoleum inviting them to the auctions at the Canny Jackal in 3 days. If the PCs want to get full value for their loot, they’d be well advised to attend the auction—and they might even find some items to purchase as well as sell. Until the auction, no major events transpire that require the PCs’ attention, leaving them plenty of time to rest from their adventures and wrap up any loose ends from the previous adventure. If the PCs wish to investigate the guest list, they can do so easily (see the following page for a list of the auction’s notable attendees). Ptemenib himself is difficult to contact—he’s busy with investigations for the church and is unavailable until the night of the auction. If the PCs decide not to attend the auction, they simply lose the opportunity to sell their treasures and look for gear there, before... Well, we'll get to that.

An evening at the Canny Jackal

The Canny Jackal hosts many of Wati’s richest collectors and historians, from local nobles to representatives from An, Tephu, and even Sothis. Auctions traditionally begin an hour after sunset, with a complimentary reception beforehand for the attendees to mingle with one another and enjoy refreshments. This evening, the Jackal is offering cheese-stuffed figs, hard-boiled peacock eggs, onion bread, onion-stuffed squid, fresh and dried fruit, spiced wine, and a sampling of 2,000-year-old honey recovered from one of the tombs. By the time the PCs arrive, several noteworthy members of Wati society have already gathered, and more filter in as the night wears on.

Two dozen attendees other eventually arrive besides the PCs, though only a handful are there to make serious bids.

Notable attendees include (including their wants which will be obvious upon conversing with them):

Baketra (female human): One of Wati’s richest and most notorious gourmands. Keen on forgotten treats or liquors, or artwork.

Basif Iosep (male half-elf): A wealthy coffee merchant and avid document collector, hoping to uncover records related to his own family.

Djat Masakhet and Intef Karam (male and female human clerics of Nethys): Representatives of Wati’s temple of Nethys, the Sanctum of Silver and Gold, looking for unique magic and lost temple records.

The Four Lanterns: A cocksure band of Andoren explorers who participated in the necropolis exploration, seek to sell their loot and buy masterwork equipment and practical magic items.

Khammayid Okhenti (male human): A young scion of the noble Okhenti family, newly returned from his studies in Oppara, eager to find expensive weapons to impress his family.

Manaat Heshwah (female human): The humorless representative of a Sothis trading house, keen on acquiring furniture, housewares, and pottery.

Maru Meshhoten and Namaru Meshhoten (both human females): An aging dowager and her granddaughter, looking for jewelry, clothing, and scandalous books and scrolls.

Menya the Whip (male human): Rail-thin and with an iron handshake, this ambitious young armorsmith is attending the auction to network though he’s also looking for a curious centerpiece for his new armor shop.

Ptemenib (male human cleric of Pharasma): Polite but distracted, Ptemenib is attending the auction as the Grand Mausoleum’s representative.

In addition, you see a few more representatives from other adventuring parties that were at the party at the Tooth and Hookah some time ago. 'The Cryptfinders' and 'Daughters of the Desert', the 'Dog Soldiers', and the 'Sand Scorpions'.
You have a chance here to network and gather rumours. You can make DC 10 Diplomacy checks to find out rumours.

Despite growing up in Wati the duskwalker had never been to the Canny Jackal before. There'd never been a real reason for her to attend an auction, or really the money.

At first she had been aprenhensive , trying to pick out one of her nicer sets of clothing to wear. As people reived however he lowly finds her element, chatting with people and sharing stories of the tombs with those interest, something she had been doing with her Dad's work colleagues for the last couple of days already.

Tabat wears his best cloak over his impressively polished armor. His mask remains strapped to his belt, so that he may smile and trade polite words with those gathered at the auction. His oddly brilliant eyes betray an otherworldliness to him, though they seem to accent his overall rugged, yet handsome, features.

He goes from person to person, greeting them and learning a little about them all.

He particularly talks up the Four Lanterns about the various Masterwork weapons their group intends to sell, in hopes the conversation might spark interest in them bidding.

Once you have had time to mingle with the other guests, the auction will begin. If you have any goods you wish to put up for auction, you can assemble the items in lots, each containing as many or as few related goods as they desire. To get the best price, you can attempt to interest one of more of the attendees in their wares. If the items for sale relate to that buyer’s interests, a successful DC 20 Bluff or Diplomacy check is required. The DC goes higher the less they're specifically interested.

"Market value" is considered 50% of the listed price for most items, including armor, weapons, and magic items, and 100% of the listed price for valuable trade goods, including gems, jewelry, art objects, and the like. If the PCs successfully persuade a buyer, the items in that lot sell for full market value. Every additional buyer interested in the lot drives up the price by 5%. If no buyer takes specific interest in a lot, it sells for 90% of market value.

The auction proceeds with a lightning pace. About a half hour in, the Pharasmin priest Ptemenib leaves quietly. He's questioned at the side as the auctioneer continues uninterupted, and apologizes but politely excuses himself, claiming he has important church business to attend to.

You buy, sell, and watch the lots go through. There is an excitement, as entirely unique artifacts are gushed over, and large sums of money change hands from the distinguished collectors that have been brought together.

As the auction winds down, and you have collected your coins and paid for your purchases, the attendees milling about and congratulating each other on their victories, there comes a frantic pounding at the Canny Jackal's front door. As a servant moves to open the door, it suddenly collapses, reduced to splinters, and a horde of zombies shamble in, hungry for the blood of the living. Two of the servants, Ahteb and Hamapetra, lie injured, unconscious and dying by the side of the doors.

As Khadi floats around the auction chatting with others, she keeps an eye on the items going up as well. Some of the rumours other were talking about intrigued the cleric, though when someone started talking about someone attacking the scorched hand she stays quiet. It sounded like news they had been handed to the guard handed gone around yet, or had been warped. Common sense told her not to try and correct people and identify herself as one involved.

One of the items going up catches her eye. A belt to make one more hardy, but she hesitates. As a group they hadn't spoken about what was next. The lottery was over, and it had always been her intention to stop there. Settle back with the coin gained and help the community, perhaps see if the temple of Pharasma would let her aid with undead in the necropolis now she had a handle of her abilities. Would such a belt be of use?

Her hesitance causes it to go to another and the cleric eventually grabs some items that would aid in her healing. They would serve for whatever comes next whether helping allies in fighting undead, or just the commoners of the city who needed aid.

She is busy admiring the gloves, holding one hand up to the light to study the detail as the door breaks down. For a split second she freezes as the zombies start to pour in before she snaps out of it and the instincts born from the last week kick in.

'Khepri, looks like we aren't done yet!' She rushes forward to be closer to the door, l as light bursts from her scarab. She needs to help those on the floor but healing them will be little good if there are still zombies to knock them back down again.

He feels decision weigh on his shoulders and feels his grief rise to the surface like a geyser as he throws his arms out to his sides - "LET ME SAVE THEM!" A wave of healing energy explodes from his body, basking everyone near enough in its radiance.

She has a teasing down as she bend down to help one of the fallen up checking for injuries and calls out to everyone else. '... Is everyone okay? No one else hurt.' The two servants, Ahteb and Hamapetra, are healed and roused, standing up with your help. They're confused and frightened, but grateful. "Blessings, noble one. I did not think the door would come down like that," says Ahteb.

Looking out into the night, you see no waiting horde of zombies. Where they came from his unclear from within the Canny Jackal.

The occupants are beginning to panic, or at least look to leave quickly, worried about what is going on with their businesses and families.
Mar 6, 2023 9:06 am
Tabat takes a deep breath and lets out a short laugh. "I do not think that wise, Khadi - even that took quite a bit out of me. I don't rightly know how I did that, didn't know I could."

His attention is turned to the servants. "It's alright, I am only glad you both are safe. It is uncertain what is going on - quick, you both should leave to your families, just in case."

Turning to his companions, he adds - "We need to figure out what that was about. Perhaps it was a distraction?"
Mar 7, 2023 6:15 pm
'Everyone please remain calm. If you are going to check on your families, please go as groups just in case there are more. If you seen any guard, let them know what happened. ' On the one hand it would be better to have everyone stay here, but they likely wouldn't appreciate that.

'We should get word the Grand Mauseleoum, let them know. They can send out people o see if any overs have emerged...perhaps theres a break in the wall?'
Mar 8, 2023 2:27 am
The crowd presses outside, jostling each other as they make their way urgently (not in a full panic) out the doorway.

You hear a groaning from the walls, as they push and bump each other into the supports on either side of the door.
Mar 8, 2023 5:10 am

You can hear their worries, for their families at their homes. For a zombie horde to have made their way here, and attacked in the protected downtown, near to the grand mausoleum, what does that say for the less protected parts of the city?
Mar 9, 2023 1:53 am
Seeing as they calm down, Tabat takes off his mask and raises his hands, palms outward - "Calm, now - form a line at the door, exit one at a time - nothing good will come this if you trample each other on the way out. Form a line!" He hops down shuffles to the door, using his bulk to warn back excessive pushing and giving encouraging looks and pats on the arms as they pass by. "Good, good!" he shouts encouragingly, hoping to keep this up until they all exit safely.

He casts a glance to his companions "You too, let's exit this place!"
Mar 9, 2023 4:05 am
You notice then, that two of the patrons had been knocked down, and were near to being trampled. Maru and Namaru Meshoten, two auction guests. Jaware helps them to their feet, his lithe body shielding them from the crowd, which is no great feat given Tabat's calm stewardship.

As the last of them exit, the front entrance way unstable but intact, Maru says, "Thank you, I could have been injured." She makes a sign of blessing and leaves with her granddaughter.

However, Menya the Whip comes barreling back in, clutching at a severed hand that's grasping his throat. "Help!" he chokes.

Five more severed hands, animated by some mischief, enter the Canny Jackal, amidst the screams of the escaping patrons.

Khadi is up, then the animated hands.

"I worry that something, or someone, has brought the dead of the city back to life, I think," Tabat says, kicking the mummified corpse at his feet to make sure it's down for the count. "Wati may have just become one of the most dangerous places in Golarion." He focuses a long stare at his companions as the thought sinks into him. "We don't know how broad the effect is - we need to act quick. The city may need to be evacuated."

Tabat hurries to the doorway, beseeching everyone inside to hold back a moment. He peeks outside into the city streets to get a view of what's happening out there.
Mar 14, 2023 7:12 am
As the mummy emerges panic wash s over Khadi and she freezes for a moment watching Tabat get hit. To try and harm it, to heal, to pray to Khepri to bless the others, for a moment she struggled for te right choice.

Then Tabat happened and it was gone before she ever had a chance to react.

'Well someone's showing off today.' She let's out a sigh of relief and gives the paladin a teasing grin allowing herself a moment of levity before she joins him looking outside.
Mar 14, 2023 5:43 pm
The owner of the Canny Jackal checks in her servants, who are hale thanks to you and approaches you. "You've kept my people alive, thank you, thank you. That mummy sarcophagus was empty, we weren't sure what to do, but it was heavier than we expected. Perhaps it was hiding inside somehow? Regardless, here, I have since potions that didn't sell that you should take, for my gratitude."

One of the servants happily brings over to you a wooden case with an oil of hold portal, a potion of aid, a potion of sanctuary, and a potion of spider climb.

Menya the Whip also offers you his sincerest thanks for saving him. In thanks for saving him, Menya offers you a sample of his finest wares, a pristine suit of mistmail, that he will fit to one of you if you come to his armor shop.
Mar 14, 2023 7:40 pm
As the mummy fear wears off, Iseret shivers visibly. "I'm sorry that I froze up like that. I've never encountered a mummy that could move on its own before."
Mar 15, 2023 6:04 am
Tabat straightens his posture and let's out a restrained laugh. "Never that, Khadi," he says, "Horus provides his gifts just as Khepri does yours - all part of their divine plan to rid this world of those undead monstrosities."

"Iseret, do not apologize. You are alright, we're all alright, that is what matters."

Khadi certainly knows about the aura of fear that Mummy's exude.

What do you want to do? Check outside, maybe track down where those zombies came from, or look for more terrors of the night?
Mar 16, 2023 7:17 am
Khadi advocates heading to the Grand Mauseleum to alert them in case they are aware. If they run into more evidence of undead on the way she is all for helping out people.

She won't put up much resistance if others want to trace the zombies however.

You track the zombies back to a corpse wagon, overturned, in an alley. Most of its load appears to be firmly in place, but a body lies beside it, covered in blood and twisted in death.

Six more zombies mill about the area, including two who are snacking on the bloody body.

Jaware points at the wagon. "There is a hidden compartment there, perhaps. The wood is too thick. Iseret, what do your eyes see?"

He also takes the silver chain. "This is familiar. It's a gang insignia, I'm sure of it."

Apr 6, 2023 12:56 am

Iseret follows Tabat, falling in quickly behind the massive warrior.
Apr 15, 2023 3:01 am
You make it to the temple. You can hear the howls of rotting lungs and screams off and on in the distance, and at least two fires raging. Something has happened, and from what you've seen, it involves necromancy. The zombies, the thief hands, and the mummy, all awakened on the same night, and that's just in your area. It's clear that the entire city is involved in this chaos.

The Grand Mausoleum is growing a small crowd.

A high priest recognizes you from the lottery, and beckons you up the stairs. "You're the ... Destined Delvers, was it? Please, tell me what you know. The city is on the verge of panic, and collapse!"
Apr 15, 2023 7:33 am
Tabat ascends the stairs and kneels before the high priest before standing again. "Your holiness. Yes, we go by that name, but we know precious little - only that we have witnessed several animated corpses and body parts in the last hour. We've had to dispatch them to get here. We were hoping you might have some idea yourself. What can we do to help?"
Apr 15, 2023 12:22 pm
'Including a mummy.' Khadi gives a worried look to the priest. 'So not all of them are weak either. We hoped you might know more of the situation, or at least best know where needs more assistance' As she speaks she plays with the symbol around her neck. Thos was sounding worse by the minute.
Apr 15, 2023 2:18 pm
Sebti the Crocodile
Sebti the Crocodile, the high priestess, bids you stand and walk with her. "We know little, only that a necromantic pulse has occurred somewhere within Wati. The dead have risen in unknown numbers and the people are bound to panic. If you want to do some good, assist the soldiers in quelling the dead and laying them back to rest, and be gentle with the residents of Wati. Oh, my colleague, Ptemenib was also at the Canny Jackal you may have seen him, but he has not yet returned. If you see him, please convey my concern for his well being."
Apr 15, 2023 6:27 pm
Iseret sighs. Fighting the living dead was to be expected in this instance, but she had not been prepared for such numbers or variety. They would take the mission, of course, that wasn't in question. But she would feel better with some supplies. "Is there any chance that we could get some holy water?" she asks Sebti.

Apr 16, 2023 8:43 pm

As she speaks she tries to recall if she had seen Ptemnebib during the chaos at the auction house.

Apr 17, 2023 12:41 am
"Let's visit these grain stores next," Tabat suggests. "If this enemy befouls the city's reserves, it won't matter if they finish us off - famine surely would." Tabat thanks the Priestess for the holy water and pockets his share.

You walk along the streets, headed for the granary, which is the one place that Sebti told you was protected. It is, however, important, starvation is no laughing matter in a city.

As you're going along the street, a strange looking bird lands on a post before you. From its beak, a confused stream of words erupts. It's nonsensical, a hodge podge of words from a half dozen languages.

"Hello little guy," he says, holding out his forearm several feet from the bird.

He turns to his friends. "Can anyone make out what this thing is trying to say?"

Wati’s grave-robbing gangs are a personal interest of Ptemenib’s, so when the agent abruptly left the auction, Ptemenib followed him into the Veins. Ptemenib had planned only on gathering intelligence about the group’s hideout, but he was discovered by Silver Chain members, and was captured. Not wanting to draw undue attention to themselves, and perhaps hoping the priest might be of some later use, the gang is keeping Ptemenib alive for now."

As you make your way through the city, the nosoi flapping ahead, and leading you with no little concern and fear for her friend, you make your way to the Veins, and then on a low hilltop, what must be the Bright River Brickworks. Or was.

Two fire-scarred mud-brick walls and a half-dozen crumbling clay kilns are all that remains of the building that once stood in this weed-choked lot. A boarded-up, scorched door stands in the southeast corner where the walls join.

"He was taken in there," Qasin indicates, pointing with her beak at the door that seems to lead to the only remaining room of the old brickworks.

Five minutes later...

You're sitting cross legged around a small fire. The two Silver Chain mercenaries, the first having been revived by a potion of healing, seem like good chaps. They tell you the following:

https://i.imgur.com/Goi8MID.jpeg

"Recently, through intimidation and blackmail, a cult seized control of the gang, placing it under the leadership of a cultist named Ekram Iffek. Since the cult’s takeover, us original members of the Silver Chain have grown less and less loyal to its new leader, and now that the ravenous dead are prowling Wati, many gang members not affiliated with the cult have run off."
May 4, 2023 5:35 am
"I see," Tabat says, "It sounds as though things have gotten worse for you since this cult showed up. What do you know of it, and it's leader? What exactly does this cult worship? And, might I ask, how many still surround Ekram Iffek who might be counted upon to betray him for a return to prior order?"
May 4, 2023 6:41 am
'I take it from you attacking when mentioned you do have the priest we are looking for. Is he alive?'
May 4, 2023 6:52 pm
The helpful smuggler, says, "I'm not sure what cult that are on, they're very secretive. They've had us searching the necropolis for an artifact, a mask. So far, we haven't find it, but with the dead all rising, it seems, I don't any of us are going to remain in the Silver Chain for much longer. Can you imagine what is happening inside the necropolis?"

When you all about the priest, they say, "Yeah, he's down there, and alive for now. Ekram hasn't decided what to do with him yet."

Behind the door where you found them, by the way, the floor boards of this ramshackle, soot-stained office have been pried up and used to construct a crude stairway leading underground. The air is quite musty.
May 4, 2023 7:28 pm
"If this cult were not in charge, who would lead your group, and where are they?" Tabat asks, standing. "Your group has committed crimes, but not great evils - it is your right to see the light of Horus and better yourselves to help others. I would give you this opportunity, if fate allows, and seek to expunge the cult from your ranks. However, myself and my companions, I'm sure, would like to ensure someone worthy is ready to take hold the Silver Chain."

"Ekram killed our former leader and all of her lieutenants. Those of any quality have left and haven't come back. No, I think the Silver Chain may one day rise again, but there is no one to unite those who remain if you cleanse us of this cult."
May 4, 2023 9:25 pm
The gears begin to turn in Iseret's mind. No one to take leadership, mmm? I wonder...
May 5, 2023 1:28 am
"I see," the paladin responds, "Well, we'll see what we can do regardless. Remember our encounter here - perhaps if you do again come together, the Silver Chain might do more good than before. There is yet profit in being good. Right now there are many in this city who need protection from undead - go, protect your families if you have them, but if you find someone in need, remember: when the dead attack, we are all one people, fighting to stay alive. Help them if you can."

Tabat nods and moves to the stairwell, ready to descend.

The guards take their leave of you and wish you luck. They leave you three 10-pound kegs of saffron (worth 150gp each) for sparing their lives and not robbing them of their arms and possessions.

Although the stairs are sturdy, they creak alarmingly. Anyone descending them takes a –5 penalty on Stealth checks.

At the bottom, the stink of mildew and stale incense fills the air in this long chamber. Sputtering lanterns provide just enough light to reveal peeling paint on the walls and a floor covered in sand. Sturdy wooden doors exit the hall to the east and west.

Seeing Khadi on her get, and helping her stand on shaky legs, Jaware goes looking around. Not far, yet.

Two items of interest hang near the door you came in: Pharasmin cleric’s vestments and a silver holy symbol of Pharasma, both in good condition.

The nosoi Qasin is following you, and she recognizes the vestments and holy symbol as Ptemenib’s and excitedly points them out, inferring from their presence that her friend must be somewhere nearby.

Most of the goods stored here are mundane and not worth much money. The most obvious valuables are:

¤ 12 ancient bottles of honeyed wine, worth 25 gp apiece. The room holds other items of wealth as well, provided their value can be recognized.

¤ Khadi and Tabat can identify a sphinxlike statue as the Auroric Flame-Mother, a representation of the elemental lord Ymeri thought lost to the ages and worth 750 gp.

¤ Iseret recognizes a broken old water clock as being the handiwork of Pheron, a legendary pioneer in Ancient Osirian mechanics, and worth 1,200 gp to a collector.

"What do you see over there, Iseret?"
May 16, 2023 2:08 am

Tabat nods in appreciation of the craftsmanship. "Let's make sure to grab these things on the way back through. Let's check the southern door next?" He motions southward and waits for Iseret to clear it of traps before they head forward.
May 16, 2023 5:33 pm
The doors to the south room have been boarded over to prevent entry, but the planks can be easily removed with a few minutes’ work. It's not a thorough job.

Beakers, cauldrons, and other alchemical equipment crowd several tables in this cramped room. A decomposing body sprawls across the floor, its face concealed behind a brass funerary mask.

Tabat helps relieve the men of anything that make benefit them in the short term should they awake and free themselves from their bindings, which he himself secures using rope.

He searches the room otherwise, standing upon the platform and taking a lot around. "Seems like a good place to run a smuggling outfit," Tabat mentions, "We'll have to make sure the authorities are aware of this place, or even if the Silver Chain is removed, others will come in here to start illicit activity."
May 25, 2023 1:23 am
Going back the other way, past the entrance way where you had the brush with a pit trap, you take the eastern doors, and find a wide, irregularly shaped room. At the bottom of one of the 30-foot deep wells lies a familiar figure, Ptemenib the priest. The nosia Qasin flaps down to him. "He's wounded! And he's tied up!"

Tabat scans the room carefully as they enter. "This smells like a trap," he says warily. "We haven't ran into their boss yet. Let's be careful."

Tabat, spear in hand, heads to the mechanical remains in the corner to poke around and look for anything dangerous.
May 30, 2023 1:27 am
The pump in the corner seems to be used to fill the cisterns with water. Reviewing it all, you find no traps, and simply need some way to retrieve the priest from the bottom of the pit. He's clearly beaten within an inch of death, so you won't have a lot of time.
May 30, 2023 3:04 am
Tabat goes to the edge of the hole. "Ptemenib, can you hear me?! We're here to rescue you. Your friend, Qasin is with us." he shouts down the well. Qasin manages the potion, and uses her talons and beak to get that potion into him. He swallows reflexively and then wakes.

Following that, he's able to hang onto a rope and you're able to pull him out of the hole.

Sipping water from Jaware's flask, he thanks you and says, "Most of the Silver Chain’s members superstitiously believe that killing a cleric of Pharasma will doom them to a lifetime of bad luck, and thus far, Ekram has humored them. The door is unlocked. When you sneak in, you find a u-shaped room opening to the east and then the south. Spying around that corner you see a masked man in studded leather armor lounging in repose.

Finely crafted antique furniture from many different periods crowds this chamber, and the smell of rich food hangs in the air. Books and charts crowd one cedar table, while a half finished banquet of fruit and roasted meats sits on another. A living area with a bed and other furniture fills the southern portion of the room.

Ptemenib, from well in the back, tells you that Wati’s grave-robbing gangs are a personal interest of Ptemenib’s, so when an agent of the Silver Chainabruptly left the auction, Ptemenib followed him into the Veins. Ptemenib had planned only on gathering intelligence about the group’s hideout, but he was discovered by these cultists masquerading as Silver Chain members, and was captured.

Ekram Iffek
adds, curious as to what you will do, that not wanting to draw undue attention to themselves, and perhaps hoping the priest might be of some later use, he decided to keep Ptemenib alive for now. "And here you are, looking. Perhaps we should have rid ourselves of him disposed of the body elsewhere."

Tabat says a prayer as well, then helps the others pack away the ill-gotten goods, for use or for future sale. He lingers on the shortbow - it feels puny by comparison to the long bow he carries, but it's incredibly sturdy. He knows from the weight of the string and resistence on the pull that any arrow fired from this would be a magnitude stronger. "I'll exchange the bow, if nobody else wants it. It has a strong pull, but I think I can manage it."

He walks over to the boxes. "Iseret, may you look these over before we open them? I would hate for the fight to be over so quickly, only for one of us to lose a limb to a box."
Jun 18, 2023 3:11 pm

The smaller chest is unlocked already, and contains Ptemenib's belongings.

Taking her time, Iseret gets the heavier chest unlocked. Inside, she finds a magical bag that contains an assortment of gemstones, necklaces, rings, statuettes and other items (when you get around to appraising it, you'll find them worth a total of 3,765gp).

On the table, there is a curious figurine made of tin, with three magical feathers, although the figurine has a spot for a fourth feather, too, but that one is missing.
Jun 29, 2023 2:11 am
Tabat moves to pick up the figurine. "Jaware, what do you make of this?"
Jul 2, 2023 5:02 pm
Jaware examines it, and says, "I'd bet this is just a holder for these, and one of them, possible a Bird Feather Token, is missing. See the empty slot? If that's what it is, then he's been sending messages to someone. That doesn't seem like a casual cult to me, these aren't cheap."

Though as outsiders esoboks don’t have to eat and draw no sustenance from this behavior, the spark of undeath is a feast for their every sense, and they pursue and ravenously consume undead creatures given the chance.

They have an ability to rip the soul or spirit free of a body, which destroys minor undead, and is also unpleasant for the living.

Tabat focuses several moments, completely still and motionless, then suddenly reels forward, his body rocking as if hit by a large stone. His muscles and features start shifting under his armor as he reaches up to remove his mask and hang it from his belt. He sprouts brown tufts of fur on his exposed skin, his ears grow long and pointed, and his nose becomes more flat with widened nostrils.

He takes a deep breath in the air through his nose, then several shorter sniffs. "Let's see what these senses might reveal, where our eyes were failing us," he says with a deeper, more bestial voice.
OOC:
Tabat uses his SLA 'Alter Self', which he can use 1/day. He changes form into a bugbear, giving him the 'scent' ability, which he will use to see if he can catch the scent of whatever foe summoned the creatures.

Tabat's abilities aren't able to reveal to him who conjured the psychopomps, but he does pick up a familiar smell. It takes him a moment to identify it, over the smells of the zombies and the terrified bloody woman who ran away, but then it hits him.

He smells a person was nearby, and on their body the faint trace of a smell he's smelt before. It's an incense used at the Grand Mausoleum.

The person is gone now.
Jul 21, 2023 8:12 pm
As several minutes pass, Tabat's features return to normal and he completes his investigation. "The person who summoned those creatures is not near, but my nose does not lie - whoever it was, was covered in the same incense as from the Grand Mausoleum. Only narrows the culprit down by, well, not much, but seems to me we have reason to believe someone within the ranks of the clergy may have been involved here. Perhaps after we visit the Necropolis, we should return there with this suspicion."

Sebti the Crocodile
When you return to the Grand Mausoleum and inform her of the esoboks’ presence, High Priestess Sebti responds with fury. "This is the work of the Voices of the Spire, and Nakht Shepses. I told them psychopomps were too chaotic to set loose on the streets. I'll put a stop to this immediately."
OOC:
A Pharasmin will know that The Voices of the Spire is a militant arm of the Pharasmin priesthood. The division of power between these two leaders is murky at best.
She fumes a moment and says, "The town guard must be informed. Will you deliver a note to the Precinct of Left Eyes for me right away?"
Jul 23, 2023 4:55 pm
"Of course, your holiness," Tabat says with a curt nod. "Where can we find them?" He takes the note and looks to the others to see if they're ready.
OOC:
If Tabat already would know the location, strike that last question :D

Khadi looks slightly uncomfortable at the mention the Voices being to blame. '..I'm sure it was a stray soldier not the group as a whole.' The others may recall while chatting and socialising in taverns as a group between their adventures in the tombs Khadi has likely mentioned one of her fathers is a member of the Voices of the Spire
Jul 23, 2023 6:38 pm
She reminds you where the precinct is.
Jul 24, 2023 4:32 am
"I hope you're right, Khadi. I'd rather not deal with droves of those creatures in the streets." He heads in the direction of the Precinct of Left Eyes.
Jul 29, 2023 4:06 pm
The Precinct of the Left Eyes is the headquarters of Wati's town guard. Law courts and halls of justice fill the surrounding blocks, many of them as old as Wati itself.

On your way, you find a low sandstone building - worn smooth from centuries of exposure - stands out among the larger, more recent constructions. Statues lining the wall hold swords and scales, but the fresh corpses scattered on the street outside the doors hint a something far darker within. It is an old courthouse, not too far from the precinct.
Jul 29, 2023 7:19 pm
"Maybe we should check this out?" Iseret offers. So saying, she carefully and quietly approaches the entrance.

"It seems we must," Tabat says, his eyes wide at the bodies surrounding the building. "Careful, Iseret." He follows at a safe distance back, sword and shield drawn.
Jul 30, 2023 3:05 pm
The corpses are inanimate but the bloody paths trail behind them, as if they had stumbled or crawled from the courthouse's front doors before finally succumbing to their wounds.

When Iseret gets to the doors and peeks inside, he sees that a trial is going on, but in this case, the dead are trying the living! A reddish, skeletal judge presides over a courthouse staffed by skeletons, while a man and woman attempt to legally defend themselves.
Jul 30, 2023 8:04 pm
"Khadi, more undead. You ready to do your thing?" At the mention of skeletal enemies, Tabat stows his khopesh and shield and instead readies his heavy flail, hoping it will prove more effective against their bony foes. "Let's end this perversion. I will charge straight to this judge and take them out as swiftly as I can."
Aug 5, 2023 3:29 am
Tabat steps forth and, with one might hand, points the long haft of the two-handed flail at the skeletal judge. "Whatever you are doing here ends NOW, creature!" He rushes the front of the courtroom towards the skeletal judge.

OOC:
This encounter has two possible resolutions described in the adventure: 1) you could be put on trial and resolve it with RP and a number of rolls; or 2) you fight. The trial sounds very tedious in PBP so thank you for making it easier.

The judge orders his bailiffs, "Seize them!"

Iseret is first!

The skeleton doesn't take a great deal of damage, the short sword mostly cracking a few bones.

The four skeletal bailiffs attack Iseret, attempting to subdue her, while the judge approaches, ready to deliver punishment as soon as she is subdued.
OOC:
I'll resolve this as three aid another checks and one grapple check. Iseret's CMD is 16.
They grab her and pull back her head attempting to pin her. The judge approaches raising a claw and looking to maybe attack her face.
OOC:
If she is still pinned next round, the judge will perform his action. Ewwww...

Tabat does as planned and moves to attack the skeletal judge with his flail. "You judge no one else today, undead scourge!"
OOC:
Charging if able - if it applies he'll take +2 to attack, -2 to AC until next round. Without his shield, this puts him at 18 AC until then. Also using Risky Strike for -2 attack, +6 damage. Undead Crusader trait for +1 dmg to undead.

Tabat strikes the judge hard, his bludgeoning weapon effective against the red skeleton's boney frame.
OOC:
Judge takes 19 damage.

Khadi's channeling: With 6 hit points, the four bailiffs are destroyed even upon a successful save. However...
Khadi rushes forward and unleashes her divine magic. A wave of energy crashes over the skeletal bailiffs and judge. The bailiffs glow white briefly, and then explode in a razor sharp bone fragments.

Only Iseret needs be within 10', so she needs to make four DC 10 Reflex saves or take 1d6 damage from each of them. While she has a +9, a natural 1 is an automatic failure.

Jaware sees the skeletons fall, and switches from trying to save Iseret from the grappling and face slashing, and switches to the judge. He has no real spells left to boost his attack, but includes some acid.

Iseret is up (including the 4 reflex saves), then the judge.

Rolls

Iseret gets normal round actions, yeah? And I'm assuming Tabat didn't know anything with his Kn: Religion roll?
Aug 7, 2023 8:19 pm
OOC:
Iseret takes 5 damage, and she does get her normal actions, yes.

Nothing on the skeletal bailiffs or judge for Tabat, other than standard skeleton/undead traits.
Aug 8, 2023 2:17 am
Recovering quickly from the blasts, Iseret attempts to maneuver behind the judge. If successful, she strikes!

Rolls

1d4+4+2d6 : (3) + (42) + 4 = 13

Aug 8, 2023 11:05 pm
Iseret misses badly, her dagger limp in her hands and nearly dropped.

The red skeleton backs away from Khadi's holy might and attempts to beat down the powerful blows of Tabat.

His claws scrape over Tabat's armor, but don't tear any flesh.

You're all up. Kill this guy.

Rolls

Iseret hits, and that's 5 points of damage, factoring in his 10/Bludgeoning damage resistance. Total damage so far: 24
Aug 9, 2023 3:25 am
"Not today!" Tabat shouts, bearing down on the skeletal judge, stepping aside as needed to take advantage of Iseret's positioning.
OOC:

Aug 9, 2023 3:36 am
The skeletal judge is crushed under Tabat's powerful blow.

Combat is over.
Aug 9, 2023 3:42 am
Tabat kicks the pile of bones to make sure there is no ploy here. Satisfied, he grunts in acknowledgement. "Finely done, my friends!" He quickly moves to the scares citizens, checking them for wounds and consoling them, making sure they are ok.
Aug 10, 2023 10:00 pm
The judge wears a Circlet of Persuasion, and has a small, mundane gavel.

The few people in the room are extremely thankful, and you hear a bunch of stories about being grabbed off the street, mock trials, and sentences that all end the same way: the insane undead judge clawing out an eye as punishment. Those who have died in the street have mostly died from bloodloss and shock. By the number of dead, and knowing how many may have survived and escaped, you realize that you have avenged a substantial number of people who have suffered this horror, and stopped a great number from a similar fate.

"He's Old Eye-Taker Sotenre, risen from the old times to resume his terrible judgements!" one tells you.

You then recall that in Wati's courts during the second age, "enucleation" (the surgical removal of prisoners' eyeballs) was a popular punishment. Those who sinned against the pharaoh should forfeit the souls that their eyes housed.
Aug 14, 2023 8:03 pm
'I'm sorry Iseret, I didn't realise they would do that!' The duskwalker seems panicked as she rushes over to check the halfling for wounds, slowly calming down as she realise that the rogue had managed to doge all the shards.

'..things are starting to get serious. Old judges rising again? We need to find out if there is a way to stop this. Exorcise the infection rather than patching up the symptoms.
OOC:
I think both Tabat of Khadi will get the same use out the CIrclet so don't mind who claims.
Aug 15, 2023 6:48 am
"These people have suffered greatly," Tabat says with a relenting shake of his head, "If only we had gotten here sooner."

He approaches Iseret and Khadi, "Are you alright, Iseret? Those skeletons were made short work of, thanks to Khepri's blessings, but it was quite surprising when they exploded like that."

He hands the circlet pulled from the judge's skull over to Khadi. "For you, Khadi - I believe you will get great use of this. Jaware says its magic will turn your very words to honey."
OOC:
If you replace it with something else later, Light, Tabat may use it then. Otherwise, I think he's gotten some of the better weapons that have been found, happy to have you take the Circlet.
Aug 15, 2023 3:56 pm
"I belive I'm okay," the halfling replies to her friends, dusting herself off. "Just some scratches from the shrapnel."
Aug 16, 2023 1:12 am
You deliver Sebti's note to the Precinct of Left Eyes, and they agree to send out patrols, ready for more esoboks that might be let loose, or surges of undead. Armed with the knowledge of what they face, their spirits rise.

You return to the Tooth and Hookah. Your day has been long and even heroes need rest.
OOC:
Anything you need before a rest and the next, exciting event?
Aug 19, 2023 2:39 pm
The next day...

You awake, rested and recharged and fully healed from the prior days adventures. As you're finishing up your breakfast on the main floor of the Tooth and Hookah, a Pharasmin priest enters. She comes to your table, and gestures respectfully, particularly at Tabat and Khadi.

"The Lady of Graves blessing be upon you," she says formally, and then adds, "My mistress, Sebti, High Priestess of the Grand Mausoleum, requests that you attend her this morning. She needs the steadying hand of an outside voice." She seems reluctant to say more, but you're a charismatic bunch, and adds, "She will confront Nakht Shepses, leader of the Voices of the Spire, regarding the psychopomps released."
Aug 19, 2023 10:47 pm
Tabat pauses his meal as the priest approaches and explains the summons. "Ah, yes. That is a troublesome thing, seeding more chaos into the city at a time such as this. We shall finish here and I believe we can make our way to her Holiness Sebti promptly." He searches the faces of his companions for a dissenting thought on the matter.
Aug 29, 2023 6:28 am
"Settled then, I think," Tabat says with a smile at the priest. "Perhaps we will see you at the temple. We'll leave post-haste." He finishes his food speedily, then gathers his things, ready to go to the temple.
Aug 29, 2023 5:28 pm
Iseret nods her agreement with Tabat's response and hurriedly gulps down her breakfast as well, eager to get back into action.
Aug 29, 2023 8:05 pm
Khadi nods as well. 'With what is happening, everyone needs too be on the same page with how to fight this. Hopefully Shepses can be convinced of this.'

You arrive at the Grand Mausoleum, and are escorted to the meeting. Both parties are eager to explain their sides

Sebti the Crocodile
"My focus is on protecting the citizens from harm. Nakht, you should defer to my judgment."

Nakht Shepses

Nakht says that his preference is for quick, decisive action and Nakht insists that the source of the necromantic uprising must be found before more powerful undead rise from their graves, and only his psychopomps are qualified for such a task.

Neither Sebti nor Nakht has clear authority in such a crisis.
Aug 30, 2023 3:21 am
Tabat stands before the arguing leaders, his jaw going from slightly agape to clenched. "Enough!" he says finally. "You stand here, bickering like school children while the city tears itself apart. You both should be ashamed. Now is not the time to determine who holds more sway, we must work together for the sake of Wati and her people!"
Aug 30, 2023 11:25 pm
Sebti the Crocodile
Sebti is aware that her words are failing to persuade. "There is no shame, young Tabat, in determining the best course for a difficult situation. We don't know the cause of this undead uprising. The Voice of the Spire wants to unleash the psychopomps, which hunger for the dead. However, they also may indiscriminately attack anyone nearby as well. This is foll."

Nakht Shepses

Nakht counters, "While you hunt and down small packs of zombies, even now greater undead awake inside the necropolis. A wraith came right through the gates, and it was only luck that nearby priests were able to summon a psychopomp who could consume it. You wait for a better solution, but the people suffer while we dither." He sweeps an arm out as if encompassing the city. "How many more need perish before we decide that we need whatever aid we can muster?"

Sebti the Crocodile
Sebti points back at him, "You're right in one thing, and one thing alone. We don't know what's coming next, but your plan sacrifices the innocent on the belief that you'll kill more undead than citizens."
Aug 31, 2023 1:45 am
'Releasing psychopomps isn't a solution either. They may be dealing with more undead, but their is no point in killing the undead if we are left with a city of no civilians.!' Khadi suddenly speaks up unable to stay quiet much longer. 'If you say the casualties are worth it, we don't know what is summoning the undead. The corpse of those the psychopomps kill may just rise and join in and we are even worse of, with more innocent lives lost. We need to find teh infection and cut it out, not just handle the symptons.
Aug 31, 2023 2:55 am
Sebti the Crocodile
"I can't send my priestesses into the Necropolis, we're needed out here. To protect, to heal, to banish."

Ptemenib
Ptemenib steps away from a wall where he was listening, and suggests, "What about these fine folks? They're resourceful." He's clearly grateful that you rescued him from the Silver Chain.

Nakht Shepses

Nakht laughs, "Hired adventurers? Against the unknown? That's rich."

Sebti the Crocodile
Sebti looks at Ptemenib and then at you. "Would you be willing to demonstrate your abilities? If you're willing of course."
Aug 31, 2023 3:59 am
"What would be required of such a demonstration?" Iseret asks cautiously.
Aug 31, 2023 2:35 pm
Nakht Shepses

Nakht sends a runner. "Face a psychopomp. If you defeat it, then clearly you're the people for the task at hand. If not, then the Voice will assume control of the situation."
Aug 31, 2023 5:07 pm
"Hah!" Tabat laughs, actually unable to control himself. "Bring this challenge. We will defeat it handily, though this is a silly way to settle yours squabble. Once we show you our worth, perhaps then you would deem a better use of time to actually help rather than waste what precious minutes we have."
Aug 31, 2023 5:37 pm
Within two minutes, a fiendish looking creature, and two esoboks, teleport into the temple. It's a tall, skeletal figure wearing a vulture-like mask and a ragged cloak of gray feathers.

Nakht Shepses

"This is Ajin Ra Baqa, a vanth that has long been an ally of the Voices of the Spire. If you can defeat our best servant and his war dogs, then I will accept the Destined Delvers in place of my psychopomps. This battle should be fought only until the majority on one side are unconscious, let's not go too far now and do permanent harm to each other." He stands back to watch the show, his furrowed brows showing that he is more than a little concerned at your fate.

https://i.imgur.com/Nfaxq39.pngAjin Ra Baqa settles the scythe into his arms and prepares. His wings bunch behind him and its likely that he will take to the air during the duel. His two esoboks lower themselves in the way predators do, ready to pounce.

Tabat is immune to fear and exudes an aura that grants anyone within 10ft of him +4 to saves vs fear. That should hit Iseret, at least.
Tabat reaches up and touches his forehead. "Horus, guide me," he says as divine healing spreads through his body. "Hya!!" he swings the flail again at the creature.
OOC:

Standard Action: Risky Strike (-2 attack, +6 damage)

OOC:
Today I learned flails are 19-20. You'd thought I would know that by now :p
Khadi grits her teeth as the scythe sinks into Tabat. Thos was meant to be a spar but she was pretty sure she wouldn't survive hits like that. Even Tabat may not be able to handle another.

She moves in, trying not to remember what happened last time she was in close proximity with an Esobok and touches Tabat shoulder letting positive energy flow through him.
OOC:
Spont casting cure moderate, losing Iron skin.

Rolls

Will - (1d20+7)

OOC:
That's some massive damage. You can tell he's hurt bad.

The two esoboks are beside the vanth rather than Tabat, so no attack of opportunity on Khadi.

Iseret ignores the esobok, focusing on the main threat.

Rolls

Short sword vs. Ajin Ra Baqa (flanking, sneak attack) - (1d20+6+2, 1d4+4+2d6)

1d20+6+2 : (20) + 8 = 28

The priests call a halt as Iseret delivers a vicious blow to the outsider, who crumples to the ground. A quick spell stabilizes the vanth from death's door.

Nakht Shepses

Nakht is dumbfounded at the turn of events. He stands proudly, however and says to you, "I am convinced. I will give you a chance to end the undead uprising your way before summoning more psychopomps into the city."

Sebti the Crocodile
Sebti herself heals any remaining wounds on Tabat. To the four of you she whispers, "Thank you."

More loudly and formerly she then asks, "Will you enter the necropolis and search for a clue as to the cause of the uprising?"

This is a level up milestone, advance your characters to level 5! You'll be given time to rest once more, and then some advice on searching the dead side of the city.

Khadi is in the middle of readying another spell as the Vanth crumples and she stand there for a moment surprised before a grin crosses her face and she walks he to Tabat and Iseret, placing an arm around the paladin's shoulders, and a hand on the halfling shoulder. 'My friends, reminded me never to piss you off.'

As Sebti speaks she nods. 'Of course.'
Sep 2, 2023 7:49 pm
"Hah!" Tabat laughs even as the outcome of the battle is fresh in his mind. "You could never do such a thing, Khadi."

Tabata allows Sebti's healing to course through his body. "Thank you, your holiness."

He peers to Nakht as well, nodding in respect. "It is no question. We are the Destined Delvers, and if hope to end this scourge lies with us, we must go there. I am sure resources are tight right now, but any aid you could give might prove valuable. Might you have any healing draughts or holy water available for this mission?" In an effort to be diplomatic, he addresses both Septi and Nakht equally.
OOC:
YAY! Congrats on level 5, everyone! I think this is the highest level I've naturally reached in a 1e Pathfinder game in PbP

"As if that were possible, Khadi," Iseret smiles back. To Sebi, she responds, "As you command, so shall it be done." She resists the urge to stick her tongue out at Nakht.

Jaware retrieves his two spent arrows, and checks them. "Aye, as they say," The laconic archer adds.

Sebti the Crocodile
"I final you. Please, get rested and when you're ready, return here. I'll provide what assistance I can to aid your search."
