Tabat plants his feet before the door. "I don't do subtle very well," he says, "but the priest may be in danger if we are not quiet."
May 2, 2023 7:31 pm
"Then permit me," Iseret says, making her way forward. She first checks the door for traps, then gives it a gentle push to see if it opens.

GM edit: adding Perception - (1d20+6)
(1) + 6 = 7

"It's stuck. Tabat, would you do the honors, please?" She steps aside to let Tabat approach.
May 3, 2023 1:37 am
"Not the quiet approach, then. I'll take it." Tabat pulls his crowbar out and hands it to Iseret. "Here, place the end at the seam, and apply some leverage." He steps back several paces, then rushes forward, putting his shoulder into the door.
OOC:
The crowbar says it gives +2 to strength checks for forcing a door down. Otherwise I think its just a straight strength check.Rolls
Strength - (1d20+7)
(19) + 7 = 26

Tabat leans on the crowbar and the board pulls open on long nails, then falls to the ground. Inside, two guards jump up, startled. "What's this then! You get out of here, there's nothing for the likes of you!"
They choose to bluster and intimidate you, hoping you'll leave. They are armed with punching daggers, and hand crossbows, and wear very fine leather armor.
What is your response?

"Who are you to decide?" Tabat responds. "We are here to see the Silver Chain. We have questions." He pulls his spear and plants the butt in the ground. "I prefer to ask with words, but actions will do if we must. We believe a friend is here, a holy man. We'd like to discuss getting him out of your hair."
May 3, 2023 2:52 pm
For reasons they don't explain, and while they're unhappy with the odds, when Tabat mentions the Silver Chain and then the holy man, they attack!
Tabat and Jaware are up first (these guys have +7 initiative, and so beat Iseret and Khadi).

Tabat sighs. "It didn't have to be this way," he says plainly. He charges the closest man with his spear and strikes, maybe more carelessly than he should, but with an effort to end the fight earlier rather than later, in case Ptemenib may be in danger.
OOC:
Charge gives him +2 attack, but -2 AC (for a total of 18 AC until his next turn). Risky strike gives him -2 to attack, +4 dmg.Rolls
Charge + Risky Strike w/ Spear - (1d20+10, 1d8+12)
1d20+10 : (13) + 10 = 23
1d8+12 : (7) + 12 = 19

Tabat's attack staggers the man, and he nearly falls.
Jaware looses two arrows in rapid succession, one on each. The injured one drops and the second one narrowly avoids a wound.
The second one surrenders. "No wait, we have instructions is all, to chase away anyone!"

Five minutes later...
You're sitting cross legged around a small fire. The two Silver Chain mercenaries, the first having been revived by a potion of healing, seem like good chaps. They tell you the following:
"Recently, through intimidation and blackmail, a cult seized control of the gang, placing it under the leadership of a cultist named Ekram Iffek. Since the cult’s takeover, us original members of the Silver Chain have grown less and less loyal to its new leader, and now that the ravenous dead are prowling Wati, many gang members not affiliated with the cult have run off."

"I see," Tabat says, "It sounds as though things have gotten worse for you since this cult showed up. What do you know of it, and it's leader? What exactly does this cult worship? And, might I ask, how many still surround Ekram Iffek who might be counted upon to betray him for a return to prior order?"

'I take it from you attacking when mentioned you do have the priest we are looking for. Is he alive?'
May 4, 2023 6:52 pm
The helpful smuggler, says, "I'm not sure what cult that are on, they're very secretive. They've had us searching the necropolis for an artifact, a mask. So far, we haven't find it, but with the dead all rising, it seems, I don't any of us are going to remain in the Silver Chain for much longer. Can you imagine what is happening inside the necropolis?"
When you all about the priest, they say, "Yeah, he's down there, and alive for now. Ekram hasn't decided what to do with him yet."
Behind the door where you found them, by the way, the floor boards of this ramshackle, soot-stained office have been pried up and used to construct a crude stairway leading underground. The air is quite musty.

"If this cult were not in charge, who would lead your group, and where are they?" Tabat asks, standing. "Your group has committed crimes, but not great evils - it is your right to see the light of Horus and better yourselves to help others. I would give you this opportunity, if fate allows, and seek to expunge the cult from your ranks. However, myself and my companions, I'm sure, would like to ensure someone worthy is ready to take hold the Silver Chain."

"Ekram killed our former leader and all of her lieutenants. Those of any quality have left and haven't come back. No, I think the Silver Chain may one day rise again, but there is no one to unite those who remain if you cleanse us of this cult."
May 4, 2023 9:25 pm
The gears begin to turn in Iseret's mind. No one to take leadership, mmm? I wonder...

"I see," the paladin responds, "Well, we'll see what we can do regardless. Remember our encounter here - perhaps if you do again come together, the Silver Chain might do more good than before. There is yet profit in being good. Right now there are many in this city who need protection from undead - go, protect your families if you have them, but if you find someone in need, remember: when the dead attack, we are all one people, fighting to stay alive. Help them if you can."
Tabat nods and moves to the stairwell, ready to descend.
