Graduation Day

Richter flicks his selective fire switch full auto as Malena takes his six o'clock. He scanned a forward minute of arc towards the crater. Hunkering on a knee as he continued to scan. He panned slowly to the left and back to the right, keeping his eyes moving. A trick he had remember from boot camp to keep them sensitive to motion. "Can't see shit out here." He grumbled and activated his armors navigation lights. Diodes under his knee plates and aside his helmet and rifle activated. "Gonna need to file a complaint to R&D, my boots are already icing up." Richter shifted his feet, cracking through frozen regolith and looked at the reading of his external thermometer. 140k His teeth chattered involuntarily as he read it. Shifting again he panned to the right, crunching through frozen regolith once more.

Despite the lack of landmarks to use to help in navigation, Richter's bearings seems flawless as he guides you unerringly towards the southern ridge of Mendeleev Crater.

Reaching the side of the crater, you can notice it is very much as Jo "Tornado" Delham had described it to you. The bottom of the crater looks pretty level and is pockmarked with smaller crater impacts. In one of those smaller craters about 100m from the southern ridge, you can seem some strange metallic glint. Looks like an installation of some sort, though you are still too far to make up any details.

Richter's route seems to have taken you to a point where the southern ridge had been broken up by another smaller impact crater. this route should make descending into the Mendeleev Crater easier, but will add up another 200m or so to your trek...

Enzo let's out a deep breath as they finally land, and begins to unbuckle. He's still struggling with his straps as the two marines are already jumping out.

Finally unlatched, he grabs his Porta-Lab and makes his way towards the exit, ducking as hops out.

"I'm all for easier. Who cares if it's a little longer?

"Good." Athena nods to Richter, the communicator clicks and her voice plays on each one’s intercom inside their helmet. "Lead the way. Stay close. Stop at crater edge for reassessment."

The team makes their way towards the crater, soil crunching and shifting beneath their feet as they walk, with a low, rhythmic sound. The landscape marked by countless impact craters, boring witness to the Luna’s tumultuous history.

As they arrive at the Mendeleev Crater, AJ gestures for everyone to stop. She pulls out a compact IR/UV binoculars, placing it in front of her eyes, her fingers working the buttons at the side as she tries to get a better look at the metallic glint down inside the crater.

Melena concentrates on securing their spot. While the others gaze far ahead, she shifts position time and time again to view their immediate surroundings and the path to safety. A solid exit strategy is vital. Never let yourselves get trapped. Protect your crew at all costs. Sentences that are forever ingrained in the young marine surface in her consciousness, while she calculates possible dangers all around. For now, she feels calm and confident. Curious, too. What is down there? What does AJ see?

"Wanna know how I know its the Greys?" Richter asked rhetorically scanning the area around the glinting metal object in the crater. "I had a dream about them last night." He scanned 25 degree increments on the approach to the thing trying to ascertain its purpose. "My grandma told me dreams have a deeper meaning." There was a muddled chewing sound, like teeth on soft wax. "What do you suppose it means that I was fucking it?"

"That your horny and slightly disturbed, I guess. No news there."
Melena rolls her eyes at him. Then adds: "Hope you don't get any ideas down there. You know which trigger to pull, right?" Sometimes Richter feels to Melena like a big tough brother to count on and have adventures with, other times he's more like an annoying manchild in an overgrown body - full of stupid ideas and hormonally challenged.

Archer follows the squad. He is happy to let Richter lead the way. It is wise to let the better-armed be at the front, just in case.

As they stop at the ridge's edge, he moves closer to get a better view of their objective. But as Archer has not been issued binoculars, he is in no better position than AJ to see what the crater hides.

Staying close to their leader, Skye unholsters her pistol in case they meet immediate threats.

Enzo follows along, looking out into the black as if he could see something. He couldn't.

Instead, he just focuses on following those around him, bathed in the soft glow of the lights from their suits, highlighting their presence to any who happen to glance their way.

"Of course he knows, Melena. They make em stupid-proof for a reason, ya know."
Feb 16, 2023 9:00 pm
"Oh Enzo!" Richter moaned as obnoxiously as he could. "You knew I'm a slut for degradation. Bully me harder, Papi."

That banter man... XD
@ Richter: Richter will notice what pretty much everyone else is noticing. The glint seems to come from something between two close by structures. However, it is too far to make out any more details... it's Athena who will discover more with her binoculars.

Speaking of which...

AJ feels a vein on her forehead pulsing as she tries to focus on the target while the two men shamelessly embarrass themselves. "Disgusting. Leave everyone out of your kink." She says, "Keep the line open for communication."

"Possible hostiles detected approximately 200m from our current position." She refocuses her attention on the task at hand and reports her findings to the team, looking through the binoculars, "An antenna appears to be the source of the transmission. Looks like it’s attached to a generator and a temporary habitat. An extraterrestrial ship located nearby, alien in origin, might accommodate five to six people. No visible connection between the vessel and the antenna."

AJ turns, sees Veillon beside her and hands the binoculars to the technician. "Take a look. Tell me what you think."

The intercom clicks again as AJ addresses the rest of the squad, "Prepare to make approach. We’ll engage the ship first to prevent it from leaving the area. Disable the weaponry. Neutralize any potential hostiles onboard."

"Roger that surging forward."

Richter stepped off the cliffside letting microgravity do its thing. 200m fall on the Moon would be like a 10m fall on Earth. So Richter picked a side to roll out on and did so when he landed. A risky maneuver for someone who hadn't trained to be nimble as a cat in the hardsuit.

"Man this feels weird." He remarked as he descended at 1.62m/s slowly gaining velocity as gravity overcame his inertia. He plodded down about 20m below and repeated the maneuver hopping down the wall gracefully and quickly.

Enzo let's out a "Hrmmph," which clearly communicates that he's sorely disappointed in the corporal's decision, but he drops the topic nonetheless as things get more serious.

At the mention of hostiles, Enzo's entire posture changes, shifting into the posture of a trained marine ready for action. Despite his attempts otherwise, the academy actually did have an effect on him.

"Alright. I take a look."
Archer takes the binoculars and surveys the site, the antenna the ship and the generator.

He waits a bit with going a examination of the site and its purpose.First order of business is to assess any immediate threats or dangers, that AJ could have missed. Safety first.
Maybe he can spot something that would give the squad a tactical advantage.

Engaging a ship? This trip might not be so boring after all. Melena feels the weight of the explosives in her pack. Of course, they might be able to keep the vessel intact and screw around with it a bit - or, bring it back for research or whatever. Melena grins to herself then closes lines at the edge.
As Richter goes first, Melena is bound to stay with her crew, ready to defend. Although the big guy only knows the direct approach, they should also think about getting back up here and - if all goes well - with a prisoner at that.

Melena has no fancy binoculars, but she knows some of the terrain, having been born on this planet. Once more she scans for anything of interest.

Melena tries to remember if there is anything else of interest in this region of the moon, but comes up blank...

As for Archer, he'll be able to notice pretty much what Athena saw.

"What if we take one alive?"

Richter was obviously bored as he descended to the crater floor. His voice sounded bored. He asked a boring question.
