The Other Baron (RP)

Roald ignores the baron's question and steps forward.
"Sir, I will tell you what we've heard and noticed over the past few days. First of all, there is going to be an attack on your house, we've learned this first hand because we were asked to join the rebels. Second the people who are not interested in joining the attack at this moment are fed up. They've had enough of your guards demanding ridiculous taxes and retaliate when the poor farmers can't pay. We have seen some sad farmsteads along the way. Your soldiers are no more than a bunch of ordinary thieves, I apologize for putting it so bluntly, I am sure you aren't aware of this.
Roald pauses for a moment to give the baron a chance to reply.
OOC:
After the reply he will talk about the feud between the barons and how the town is suffering from the troubled relations

While you are out exploring you notice, more than once, that a young lady seems to be following you, or at least improbably appearing wherever you are. If you look at her she pretends to be doing something else and not noticing you, but maybe she wants to say something to you?

If you spend too much time out here, you might miss the talking with the baron, and 'talking' is apparently what adventuring is all about.

Chlodomer smiles knowingly at the mention of 'rebel attack' but does not say anything. His smile vanishes, though, when you suggest that his people are doing anything less than their best for the 'poor farmers' or that his taxes are unfair.

"I am a good leader." He declares. "Nothing happens here that I am unaware of."

You can tell that you are treading on thin ice. He does not like being criticised, but is still listening.
Mar 1, 2023 3:19 pm
"Good sir, I mean no offence. But you asked us to tell you what we know, and that's what I am doing. Our mission is to smooth things over and try to get some trading going.

I am the son of a butcher, my father always told the story of how he and his neighbour -the vegetable farmer - got into a fight one day. The people in the village started taking sides and he lost half of his clients, and also half of his income. After a couple of months the wives of the two men made them talk to each other to make amends. Turns out it was all a big misunderstanding. They both never got all of their clients back.
So I would like to ask you to try and get back on speaking terms with all the parties, I am sure you will all benefit greatly from such a meeting."

Roald is doubting he should tell about the kidnapped daughter, the baron doesn't look too happy at the moment. Then he thinks of a way to maybe soften the accusation.
"There is only one more thing you should know, sir. On our way here we heard rumours that you kidnapped the mayor's daughter! Of course this is only gossip but these stories tend to start leading their own life if not debunked, the mayor's daughter hasn't been seen for a while now and I'm afraid this isn't helping at all with these obviously false accusations. "

Roald steps back and watches the baron closely.

Albert didn't expect Roald to be so driven in his conversation with the baron. A few times he opens his mouth to say something, but then shuts it again while Roald pretty much says what he was about to. Not that he minds. The baron's mention of food worked on him, causing him to have to hold his stomach to not make his hunger too obvious.
Mar 2, 2023 12:02 am
A servant knocks politely on the door and indicates that food is ready. The baron looks annoyed that it was not brought here, but he did not specify in his instructions so the table has been set. He rallies and pretends it was his intent to show you such hospitality, and is pleased with the clean white cloth and fancy silverware being on show.
OOC:
If Norbert was not yet back before the relocation, he will now have an excuse to wander around the house for a bit 'looking for his friends who were just there'.
After Roald has spoken the baron nods in polite agreement with the general idea of what was said, but clearly misses the point of the parable and does not much care if the local butcher and grocer lose their customers --they have to go somewhere, and it is all the same to him.

"Speaking terms would be good." The baron agrees, but you hear the undertone of 'but I am still building both a wall and an army, which can also solve the problem'. "Get the workers back to working and the village back to trading. Yes." He does not mention speaking with the other baron, in his mind that would be too crazy an idea to even think about. His father and his father's father 'fought' the Childeberts. That is just the way it has always been.

Norbert kneels next to his dog ans whispers a few words in its ear while stroking its back a giving it something to eat from his pocket. "I could use a bite." he says to himself.
The dog saunters off and walk in big circle over to the girl and sits at her feet, inviting her to pet him.

Feeling his stomach grumble he looks around for what could be the kitchen or maybe the backery.

The girls looks nervously at the large, hungry-looking dog and backs away into an open doorway. You get the feeling from how your dog is sitting that she is still just on the other side, though.

If you are going to talk to her, it appears you will have to make the next move.

What do you do?
Mar 3, 2023 9:01 am
Norbert quickly gets over there, seeing the dog is not its usual cuddly self.
He hugs the dog and says: "I hope he didn't scare you. He is really nice and you can pet him if you want."

The dog snuggles itself down on his belly en closes its eyes.

"Do you live around here? Do you know where I can grab a bite of bread or some soup? And maybe a little bit for this furball."

"Can I?" The girl asks, crouching down to reach out a hesitant hand to the dog, but becoming more comfortable as she sees it is safe. "What's his name?" She asks, though that might be out of not knowing if it will be polite to ask you what your name is. "My name is Marisella."

"Are you visiting my... baron?" She asks with only a brief hesitation as she thinks who. "There is food left over in the kitchen." Says, sounding like the idea of inviting you in is a little scandalous and loving it.

If you follow her into the kitchen the cook harrumphs and looks disproving, but Marisella shoos her away. "It's OK, cookie." She says, introducing you and saying you are guests of the baron according to whatever you told her.

The cook turns her back on you two, but does not leave. Marisella stands awkwardly near the food, apparently not sure how or what to serve you and the dog. You can help yourself or give instruction.

What do you do?

Roald takes a seat at the table and politely waits for the baron's signal to start eating.

I think he got my point. Very good, maybe there is a solution to this mess afterall.
Mar 4, 2023 12:15 pm
"Hi Marisella, I'm Norbert. I never came around to naming the dog. She always just knows when I talk to her." The dog pricks up its ears at that.

In the kitchen Norbert takes a bit of food for him and the dog and goes back outside to sit on a barrel or something he find finds in the courtyard.

"Thank you very much, Marisella. I came here with two seasond adventurers who are on a mission from the mayor. There should have been an advance party before us, but we have not found them. Are there many visitors for the baron?
He hands a bit of bone to Marisella:"Do you want to feed her?" He motions to the dog.
"I can't imagine what it is like to live in a place like this. Do you like it?"

The baron sits back, not reaching for food nor telling you to help yourselves. The servants hover at the back of the room, unsure and waiting for orders from someone.

The baron showed no reaction at all to the news of his apparent kidnapping actions. No sign of surprise, outrage, or denial.

Marisella holds her hand far away from the scraps. "Oh, no. I couldn't." She claims. She has joined you outside, but hovers in the doorway looking around nervously before taking a deep breath and speaking quickly, in a conspiratorial whisper.

"You --or your friends-- are 'adventuring heroes', right?" She asks to confirm. "You rescue 'damsels in distress', right?"

There is a creak from inside the nearby kitchen, and you can see the cook through the window. she is not so close as to definitely be able to hear what you are saying if you keep your voice low, but she is keeping a watch on the conversation, possibly just to make sure strange men are not behaving untowardly to the local women.

What do you do? How do you answer?

Albert can't wait any longer and reaches for some of the bread on the table. He decides to start with a simple food before moving on to the meats and such. He tries to mask the awkwardness with some conversation.

"It's such a shame that that other baron is too stubborn to admit that working together would be so much more beneficial than this feud." He says, trying to be subtle about it. "Imagine what a combined barony could do for the region! How much more wealth you would gain if you didn't have to spend so much on defenses."
Let's hope this somehow works.
"And now with these rebels, even more guards will be needed to get rid of them. But then who will be working the farms? I wouldn't want to be in your shoes, sir! I admire your courage."
Mar 6, 2023 8:32 am
Roald has a hard time suppressing a smile.
Nice one Albert, hehe.
He is also wondering where Norbert is. He should also enjoy this free food.

When Roald sees Albert going for the bread, there is no reason to restrain himself any longer. He's always had a healthy appetite and the food tastes fantastic.
''You're right Albert, don't forget those additional guards have to be payed, so that's a double loss. ''

Roald turns his face to the baron. '' Sir, might I propose a date for a meeting between you, Childebert and the mayor. Say... In three days at the town hall? Would that work for you?''

The baron gives every appearance of not noticing what you are eating, but you get the impression that he is taking note of the sorts of things you take so as to judge you on what you are worth.

"Yes. Childish Bert would be blind to the advantages of bringing the valley under one rule. I am glad you have recognised the value in that." This seems to be the first thing that has actually gotten his attention. "And that's your job? Bringing about such a peace?

"You say you were hired by...?"

If he thinks you were hired by the other baron he will suspect your motives, but if he things you were hired by the mayor --or some 'interested third party'-- he might embrace any ideas you bring in the hope they further his power.

"Three days!?" The baron demands, sitting up straight and suddenly suspicious. "Why 'three days'? What are you up to? You're working with Childebert, aren't you?"

While he tosses a morsel to the dog: "In our last mission we combed out the castle of some rich guy to find a young princess, but sadly we found no trace of her. Even this one with her great nose, (throwing another morsel and playing fetch) could find nothing." lowering his voice he adds: "why do you ask?"

"I am not supposed to talk about it." Marisella says very quietly. "Though, really, I am not supposed to know about it. They say I am 'too young'." She pouts moodily at this last bit.

"But people overlook me --they don't take me seriously-- but I hear things." She sounds angry at the way she is treated, like she is wanting to stick it to them. "They have got a girl, and are planning on sacrifice her so the gods will 'bless the crops' or something silly." She says all in one breath, then her defiance wanes a bit and she looks down, embarrassed, and mutters --mainly to herself. "I don't know what's so special about her anyone can be virgin, I'm a virgin..."

"Marisella. What are you gossiping about out there?" The cook demands, looming over the washing up and looking out the window at you two. "It is time for bed, young lady."

Marisella glares over her shoulder at the cook, opens her mouth to say something, but then closes it and does not talk back. She gives you an apologetic shrug and starts to turn to go inside.
