The Other Baron (RP)

Feb 14, 2023 8:39 am
Continued from The wind in her hair.

The land on the far side of the village looks much the same on the other. There is little work being done, and 'farmers' stare at you over their crumbling fences and from their unmaintained fields. Some greet you and ask casual questions, others watch you suspiciously.

As you near the baron's steading, you see signs of more recent work. Trees have been felled, and the road has deep drag-ruts in the rain-soaked surface.

You soon discover where those trees have gone: A large group of men are setting up a palisade fence to bar the way to the baron. This is the third such barricade you have encountered in this valley --they seem to be in fashion-- but this one is not complete and the workers don't seem interested in stopping you from passing. You can walk right up to the baron's home if you so choose.

What do you do?
Feb 14, 2023 2:01 pm
On the way there Norbert asks if the farmers have seen a "Knight in shining armour" pass by. But once at the baron's home he follows the lead of the two men.
Feb 14, 2023 2:09 pm
- Norbert -

It is possible that the others took a different road --likely, even, if they did not go via the village-- but by the end there is only one way to the baron and no one admits to having seen your knight.
Feb 17, 2023 5:37 pm
"So unless they took the other road, that oaf came to his senses about traveling in armour." Norbert jokingly says to the men. "Have you figured out what you want to tell or ask this baron?".
Feb 17, 2023 8:05 pm
Albert has a chuckle at Norbert's comment. "You might be right."

"Well, I think we should ask them what's going on first. What's causing this hostility between the two barons. Try to find a way to negotiate a treaty, perhaps."
Feb 18, 2023 8:54 am
Norbert notices that his spirits are up. Even tough it was a rough night and the harsh weather is still in his bones he feels a lot of positive energy flowing trough him. Could it be that Railnor?

"Lead the way."
Feb 18, 2023 12:09 pm
An obsequious man --the term 'seneschal' comes to mind of anyone who knows it-- takes your names and purpose for visiting, and then shows you to a richly appointed room to wait for the baron. Apparently the baron is quite busy right now, but will see you 'as soon as he can'.

The hours tick by, and you might suspect that this is some sort of 'power-play' by the baron: 'keep them waiting and meet with them once they are too tired to outwit him'. You can be glad you slept until afternoon, so you are likely to be better off than he is... unless he also slept until late.

What purpose did you give for being here?
Do you wait patiently?
Norbert: Did your dog come in with you, or is she 'guarding the perimeter'?
Feb 19, 2023 11:57 am
Roald sits and stands and sighs and sits back down between numerous pacing sessions.
"If he is trying to test our patience... I'm failing miserably."
Roald puts his ear to the door and listens for... anything.
When he doesn't hear a sound he opens the door.
The guard standing on the other side looks surprised but before he can say something Roald starts talking

"I'm sorry good man, but we've been waiting here for quite some time, and you know,... nature is calling. We could also do with some refreshments if you don't mind. Please go and inform your superior of our needs"

He turns to Albert en Nortbert

"Let's hope that being a bit irritating and demanding speeds up this waiting game. And if it doesn't, at least we've had a nice meal"
Feb 19, 2023 12:01 pm
The guard directs you to the facilities to deal with your 'call of nature', if he relayed your message about refreshments --there is at least water by the toilet-- nothing comes of it.

What do you do?
Feb 20, 2023 10:52 am
Albert starts out patiently, taking some time to sit and reflect while having an internal imaginary conversation with Raynor. When Roald addresses the guard, he snaps out of his meditation. After his return from the loo, he speaks up "You are right, Roald. This is taking forever." His stomach gives a rumble. The talk about a nice meal made him realize he was hungry.

"I guess all we can do is wait, though. We don't want to start this off with a disagreement."
Feb 20, 2023 2:20 pm
Eventually --well after dark-- the baron joins you, wiping his mouth in a way the suggests he has just finished eating --and kept you waiting while he did so.

"So," he says as he sits. "Someone burned to Childerbert's place?" He sounds pleased about this. "Soon we will have a wall they can't past." It is not clear which 'they' he is referring to.

He eyes you shrewdly for a moment. "What do you want from me? What can you offer me?"
OOC:
There was no actual 'burning' at Childerbert.
Feb 21, 2023 11:52 am
"Ah, good sir. How kind of you to meet with us." Albert speaks up. "We are adventurers who happened to be in the area of the Childerbert's barony when this ransacking took place." He walks a bit closer and does a sort of short bow. "Now, we assume that you have ways of getting information from the region, but since we were present and we are a neutral party with no affiliation to either baron, we thought you might be interested in the actual facts!"

He gestures toward the door where that guard is standing who denied their request for food earlier. "I mean, do you expect to get a truthful answer out of people like that? They're probably too busy trying to spin the truth to suit your mood so that they would get a promotion."

"In return, we merely ask for a contribution to fund our adventuring endeavors. This may be in money or supplies."
OOC:
In case of a roll, can I use my deception skill?

Rolls

We're just a neutral party, we promise! (deception) (this is +cha, right?) - (2d6+1)

(31) + 1 = 5

Feb 21, 2023 2:24 pm
His eyes flick dismissively to the guard you used to illustrate the quality of his staff --you have seen-- and shrugs in agreement.

"Oh, I have things you will want." The baron replies sitting back expansively, clearly enjoying the encounter. "I can make this worth our while. Tell me what you think happened there."
Feb 22, 2023 2:03 am
Roald is on edge. That last sentence, the tone was... off. He knows, this is a test, he knows. He glares at Albert and Norbert, did they notice it too? If they did, they are clearly not showing.
"Sir, my name is Roald. First of all, Childebert's place is still intact, there was no fire." Roald tries to read the baron's face, looking for a hint of surprise, or the absence of it.

I had the opportunity to talk to some of the people who attacked the mansion, they are fed up, they have had enough of Childebert's bullying, they want a change"

Roald pauses and waits for the baron to respond. He said something specific, and something quite general.

Maybe I shouldn't have spoken up, Albert is better at these 'games'
Feb 22, 2023 2:26 am
"What? Revolting peasants?" The baron guffaws. "Not surprising. Childebert doesn't know how to govern his people. Probably ran away like the coward he is."

He looks mildly disappointed that there was no fire and destruction, but you are also not sure he believes that your story covers all the angles. You don't know how much he knows, and he is not sharing his knowledge yet.
Feb 22, 2023 3:22 pm
Happy to see Roald add to the conversation with some facts that get the baron's attention, Albert chimes in again. " As I said, sir. We believe to have information that is of value to you. Can we, perhaps, sit down together and talk? I'm sure we're able to come to an agreement."
Feb 23, 2023 10:41 pm
Chlodomer leans forward, his eye twinkling at Albert's challenge. "It depends on the value of your information, now doesn't it?" He points out, still not committing to anything, but apparently enjoying himself.
Feb 25, 2023 11:38 am
"Most definitely!" Albert agrees. "If you can agree to allow us some of your provisions for our next journey, we are willing to share what we know. Since you are a man of honor, we trust that you would offer recompense of equal value." He really tries to emphasize the 'man of honor' bit to make the baron feel mighty and revered. Implying that we would not dare waste his time with useless information.
Feb 26, 2023 2:16 am
"'Trust'? Yes." Chlodomer nods. "I'll show you mine if you show me yours."

He studies you all for another moment before putting on a magnanimous smile. "You have travelled far? You are hungry?" He 'asks', calling for a servant to bring you food before you have a chance to answer. This feels more like a power-play than actual generosity --what with him first having you wait while he ate.

Do you humour him, or call him out on this?
Feb 26, 2023 2:35 pm
Just when naively Norbert is about to say: "I would like a bite." , the dog gives a short whine. "He needs to get out, I'll be right back." and he get's up to stroll around the courtyard.
He has a quick look around, but he is not looking for something in particular. Just to get a feel for the place and the people living there. Is it very similar to the other baron's place? "I wish that young kid was here." He mumbles to himself.
Feb 28, 2023 8:10 pm
Roald ignores the baron's question and steps forward.
"Sir, I will tell you what we've heard and noticed over the past few days. First of all, there is going to be an attack on your house, we've learned this first hand because we were asked to join the rebels. Second the people who are not interested in joining the attack at this moment are fed up. They've had enough of your guards demanding ridiculous taxes and retaliate when the poor farmers can't pay. We have seen some sad farmsteads along the way. Your soldiers are no more than a bunch of ordinary thieves, I apologize for putting it so bluntly, I am sure you aren't aware of this.
Roald pauses for a moment to give the baron a chance to reply.
OOC:
After the reply he will talk about the feud between the barons and how the town is suffering from the troubled relations
Mar 1, 2023 8:26 am
- Norbert -

While you are out exploring you notice, more than once, that a young lady seems to be following you, or at least improbably appearing wherever you are. If you look at her she pretends to be doing something else and not noticing you, but maybe she wants to say something to you?

If you spend too much time out here, you might miss the talking with the baron, and 'talking' is apparently what adventuring is all about.
Mar 1, 2023 8:26 am
- Roald -

Chlodomer smiles knowingly at the mention of 'rebel attack' but does not say anything. His smile vanishes, though, when you suggest that his people are doing anything less than their best for the 'poor farmers' or that his taxes are unfair.

"I am a good leader." He declares. "Nothing happens here that I am unaware of."

You can tell that you are treading on thin ice. He does not like being criticised, but is still listening.
Mar 1, 2023 3:19 pm
"Good sir, I mean no offence. But you asked us to tell you what we know, and that's what I am doing. Our mission is to smooth things over and try to get some trading going.

I am the son of a butcher, my father always told the story of how he and his neighbour -the vegetable farmer - got into a fight one day. The people in the village started taking sides and he lost half of his clients, and also half of his income. After a couple of months the wives of the two men made them talk to each other to make amends. Turns out it was all a big misunderstanding. They both never got all of their clients back.
So I would like to ask you to try and get back on speaking terms with all the parties, I am sure you will all benefit greatly from such a meeting."

Roald is doubting he should tell about the kidnapped daughter, the baron doesn't look too happy at the moment. Then he thinks of a way to maybe soften the accusation.
"There is only one more thing you should know, sir. On our way here we heard rumours that you kidnapped the mayor's daughter! Of course this is only gossip but these stories tend to start leading their own life if not debunked, the mayor's daughter hasn't been seen for a while now and I'm afraid this isn't helping at all with these obviously false accusations. "

Roald steps back and watches the baron closely.
Mar 1, 2023 6:18 pm
Albert didn't expect Roald to be so driven in his conversation with the baron. A few times he opens his mouth to say something, but then shuts it again while Roald pretty much says what he was about to. Not that he minds. The baron's mention of food worked on him, causing him to have to hold his stomach to not make his hunger too obvious.
Mar 2, 2023 12:02 am
A servant knocks politely on the door and indicates that food is ready. The baron looks annoyed that it was not brought here, but he did not specify in his instructions so the table has been set. He rallies and pretends it was his intent to show you such hospitality, and is pleased with the clean white cloth and fancy silverware being on show.
OOC:
If Norbert was not yet back before the relocation, he will now have an excuse to wander around the house for a bit 'looking for his friends who were just there'.
After Roald has spoken the baron nods in polite agreement with the general idea of what was said, but clearly misses the point of the parable and does not much care if the local butcher and grocer lose their customers --they have to go somewhere, and it is all the same to him.

"Speaking terms would be good." The baron agrees, but you hear the undertone of 'but I am still building both a wall and an army, which can also solve the problem'. "Get the workers back to working and the village back to trading. Yes." He does not mention speaking with the other baron, in his mind that would be too crazy an idea to even think about. His father and his father's father 'fought' the Childeberts. That is just the way it has always been.
Mar 2, 2023 10:45 am
Norbert kneels next to his dog ans whispers a few words in its ear while stroking its back a giving it something to eat from his pocket. "I could use a bite." he says to himself.
The dog saunters off and walk in big circle over to the girl and sits at her feet, inviting her to pet him.

Feeling his stomach grumble he looks around for what could be the kitchen or maybe the backery.
Mar 2, 2023 11:01 am
- Norbert -

The girls looks nervously at the large, hungry-looking dog and backs away into an open doorway. You get the feeling from how your dog is sitting that she is still just on the other side, though.

If you are going to talk to her, it appears you will have to make the next move.

What do you do?
Mar 3, 2023 9:01 am
Norbert quickly gets over there, seeing the dog is not its usual cuddly self.
He hugs the dog and says: "I hope he didn't scare you. He is really nice and you can pet him if you want."

The dog snuggles itself down on his belly en closes its eyes.

"Do you live around here? Do you know where I can grab a bite of bread or some soup? And maybe a little bit for this furball."
Mar 3, 2023 9:14 am
- Norbert -

"Can I?" The girl asks, crouching down to reach out a hesitant hand to the dog, but becoming more comfortable as she sees it is safe. "What's his name?" She asks, though that might be out of not knowing if it will be polite to ask you what your name is. "My name is Marisella."

"Are you visiting my... baron?" She asks with only a brief hesitation as she thinks who. "There is food left over in the kitchen." Says, sounding like the idea of inviting you in is a little scandalous and loving it.

If you follow her into the kitchen the cook harrumphs and looks disproving, but Marisella shoos her away. "It's OK, cookie." She says, introducing you and saying you are guests of the baron according to whatever you told her.

The cook turns her back on you two, but does not leave. Marisella stands awkwardly near the food, apparently not sure how or what to serve you and the dog. You can help yourself or give instruction.

What do you do?
Mar 4, 2023 9:03 am
Roald takes a seat at the table and politely waits for the baron's signal to start eating.

I think he got my point. Very good, maybe there is a solution to this mess afterall.
Mar 4, 2023 12:15 pm
"Hi Marisella, I'm Norbert. I never came around to naming the dog. She always just knows when I talk to her." The dog pricks up its ears at that.

In the kitchen Norbert takes a bit of food for him and the dog and goes back outside to sit on a barrel or something he find finds in the courtyard.

"Thank you very much, Marisella. I came here with two seasond adventurers who are on a mission from the mayor. There should have been an advance party before us, but we have not found them. Are there many visitors for the baron?
He hands a bit of bone to Marisella:"Do you want to feed her?" He motions to the dog.
"I can't imagine what it is like to live in a place like this. Do you like it?"
Mar 5, 2023 1:42 pm
- Roald -

The baron sits back, not reaching for food nor telling you to help yourselves. The servants hover at the back of the room, unsure and waiting for orders from someone.

The baron showed no reaction at all to the news of his apparent kidnapping actions. No sign of surprise, outrage, or denial.

What do you do?
Mar 5, 2023 1:44 pm
- Norbert -

Marisella holds her hand far away from the scraps. "Oh, no. I couldn't." She claims. She has joined you outside, but hovers in the doorway looking around nervously before taking a deep breath and speaking quickly, in a conspiratorial whisper.

"You --or your friends-- are 'adventuring heroes', right?" She asks to confirm. "You rescue 'damsels in distress', right?"

There is a creak from inside the nearby kitchen, and you can see the cook through the window. she is not so close as to definitely be able to hear what you are saying if you keep your voice low, but she is keeping a watch on the conversation, possibly just to make sure strange men are not behaving untowardly to the local women.

What do you do? How do you answer?
Mar 5, 2023 4:40 pm
Albert can't wait any longer and reaches for some of the bread on the table. He decides to start with a simple food before moving on to the meats and such. He tries to mask the awkwardness with some conversation.

"It's such a shame that that other baron is too stubborn to admit that working together would be so much more beneficial than this feud." He says, trying to be subtle about it. "Imagine what a combined barony could do for the region! How much more wealth you would gain if you didn't have to spend so much on defenses."
Let's hope this somehow works.
"And now with these rebels, even more guards will be needed to get rid of them. But then who will be working the farms? I wouldn't want to be in your shoes, sir! I admire your courage."
Mar 6, 2023 8:32 am
Roald has a hard time suppressing a smile.
Nice one Albert, hehe.
He is also wondering where Norbert is. He should also enjoy this free food.

When Roald sees Albert going for the bread, there is no reason to restrain himself any longer. He's always had a healthy appetite and the food tastes fantastic.
''You're right Albert, don't forget those additional guards have to be payed, so that's a double loss. ''

Roald turns his face to the baron. '' Sir, might I propose a date for a meeting between you, Childebert and the mayor. Say... In three days at the town hall? Would that work for you?''

The baron gives every appearance of not noticing what you are eating, but you get the impression that he is taking note of the sorts of things you take so as to judge you on what you are worth.

"Yes. Childish Bert would be blind to the advantages of bringing the valley under one rule. I am glad you have recognised the value in that." This seems to be the first thing that has actually gotten his attention. "And that's your job? Bringing about such a peace?

"You say you were hired by...?"

If he thinks you were hired by the other baron he will suspect your motives, but if he things you were hired by the mayor --or some 'interested third party'-- he might embrace any ideas you bring in the hope they further his power.
Mar 6, 2023 8:39 am
- Roald -

"Three days!?" The baron demands, sitting up straight and suddenly suspicious. "Why 'three days'? What are you up to? You're working with Childebert, aren't you?"
Mar 6, 2023 10:42 am
While he tosses a morsel to the dog: "In our last mission we combed out the castle of some rich guy to find a young princess, but sadly we found no trace of her. Even this one with her great nose, (throwing another morsel and playing fetch) could find nothing." lowering his voice he adds: "why do you ask?"
Mar 6, 2023 10:56 am

"I am not supposed to talk about it." Marisella says very quietly. "Though, really, I am not supposed to know about it. They say I am 'too young'." She pouts moodily at this last bit.

"But people overlook me --they don't take me seriously-- but I hear things." She sounds angry at the way she is treated, like she is wanting to stick it to them. "They have got a girl, and are planning on sacrifice her so the gods will 'bless the crops' or something silly." She says all in one breath, then her defiance wanes a bit and she looks down, embarrassed, and mutters --mainly to herself. "I don't know what's so special about her anyone can be virgin, I'm a virgin..."

"Marisella. What are you gossiping about out there?" The cook demands, looming over the washing up and looking out the window at you two. "It is time for bed, young lady."

Marisella glares over her shoulder at the cook, opens her mouth to say something, but then closes it and does not talk back. She gives you an apologetic shrug and starts to turn to go inside.

What do you do?
Mar 6, 2023 7:25 pm
'' We don't work for Childebert, sir. Three days is approximately the time we will be needing to set up the meeting and talk to the other parties. We thought it respectful to come to you first, you see. But that means we have to go all the way back to inform the other baron and the mayor.''

Roald wants to add something about the lost time waiting in the waiting room, but wisely keeps that to himself.
Mar 7, 2023 4:02 am
"Childebert doesn't matter. He would have nothing to say that is worth hearing. He is too stubborn to listen to reason." Chlodomer declares, he does not come out and say it, but you get the impression --from all you have heard-- that his lifelong rivalry with the other baron means he would not be willing to go to a meeting if he knew his enemy were to be there.

He seems quite content to broker a peace where the valley comes under one rule, just so long as Childebert is not involved. In his mind everything you have said so far leads to him ruling, which he agrees would be better. None of this seems to come as a surprise to him either, the way he is listening --and not listening to bits the don't fit his worldview-- suggests he may have known such plans were in action even before you came up with them.

The only thing the seemed to penetrate his armour-of-self-assurance was the mention of 'three days from now'. That is definitely a sore-point for some reason.

What do you do?
Mar 7, 2023 10:33 pm
"Ah, but that is exactly why we have to invite him, sir!" Albert chimes in with a mischievous smile. He takes a roasted chicken leg from the table at this point and bites into it. He swallows before continuing.

"If Childebert were not to attend this meeting, then he will surely claim that it was all a setup to overrun his rule without him having any say. But if he is there, he will have to accept the outcome. And I have no doubt that you can come up with a clever way to leave with the upper hand. Let's be honest, and I hope this stays between us but, to swindle Childebert it doesn't even have to be that clever, right sir?" He winks at the baron.
Mar 8, 2023 4:53 am
- Albert -

"You are not wrong." The baron agrees with your assessment of his rival's dimness. "But who cares if he 'accepts', we can make him accept." He sounds delighted by the prospect and seems to have included you in the 'we' that would do the making.

"Tell me all you plans." Chlodomer says suddenly leaning forward and sounding 'reasonable but forceful' in a way that suggests he is trying one of those 'negotiation techniques' you have heard bar patrons boasting about learning.

You don't get the feeling you will get too much out of him if you continue on the same track, he was visibly spooked by something about the date you guys proposed, but also has his own vision of how things are going and that does not quite fit with what you have presented so far. You get the feeling he came into this negotiation 'knowing what was going to be said' and is not actually listening to what is being said. He seems to know about most of your points, but his responses don't quite align with what you think is going on.

What do you do?
Mar 8, 2023 7:18 am
Roald picks up again.
'' sir, you seemed not happy with the date I proposed for the meeting with Childebert and the mayor, would you like to propose one yourself? Than Albert and I can talk it over and see if it fits our time schedule.''

Roald completely ignores the question about telling 'all the plans' .

- Roald -

Chlodomer eyes you very suspiciously when you suggest that you have a schedule and that it aligns with his 'three day panic'.

"My wife..." He starts to say before changing his mind. "I need to talk to... my people." He settles on, though you don't get the impression he is one to listen to the people he surrounds himself with.
You have recently found your --previously unknown-- leadership skills being put to the test, and have been noticing human behaviour quirks. If you keep pushing on the baron with your own facts there is a fair chance he will break and this cooperative persona might vanish.

Something also nags at you about the timeline, but you can not put your finger on exactly what. Perhaps, if you can have a private word with both of your companions, you can decipher that quandary.

What do you do?
Mar 8, 2023 8:07 am
Noticing this change in the baron's behavior, Albert is inclined to let it rest for now. He doesn't want to get this guy angry. "Roald, seeing as it's already late. I think we should retire for the night and give the baron the chance to sleep on it." Then he turns to the baron. "Can you recommend an inn nearby, sir? Or perhaps you have some quarters available?"
Mar 8, 2023 2:38 pm
- Roald and Albert

"There is no inn around here." The baron says, making it sound like a boast. "I will have rooms made up... in the servants quarters." He adds this last almost as an afterthought, but his beady eyes watch for any reaction to this possible slight.
OOC:
We can assume you meet up with Norbert after his chat. Unless something extreme happens in Norbert's scene they should take about the same amount of in-game time.
Mar 9, 2023 12:18 pm
"That's horrible" Norbert whispers. In a louder voice so the cook can hear him he adds: "Could you show me where I can take the dog for short walk, I would not want her to soil the courtyard."

When they are out of earshot of the cook he asks: "Are you shure? where do they keep her? Where did she came from? Are you safe?" all in one breath and with a trace of panic in his voice.
Mar 9, 2023 12:35 pm
- Norbert -

"Anywhere out there is fine." Marisella says waving in the general direction of the stables or fields. But you get the feeling she does not care much about a mess in the courtyard either and is following your excuse to get some distance.

"What? How am I supposed to know?" She demands petulantly in reply to your first three questions. "They don't tell me anything." She sounds sulky about this fact.

"Oh, I am perfectly safe." She says, exaggerating her words. "No one would ever even consider that I could be a perfectly good sacrifice if it wasn't ..." She honestly sounds upset about this, probably (hopefully) she is after the adventure of being rescued.

"MARISELLA! I said it is time for bed!" She cook repeats as she fills the doorway, interrupting. Marisella, who was about to try to sneak off with you squeaks in panic, turns and runs back inside without another word.

What do you do?
Mar 10, 2023 8:57 am
While the dog does its thing Norbert tries to gather his thoughts and breath. He is thouroly shaken by this news. If it weren't for the knowledge that there is a girl missing he would have dismissed it as a young girls fantasies, but this can't be coincidence.

When he returns to the two men he recounts his findings. He has found his composure again, but if they where alert for it they would notice that the dog stays very close to Norbert.

"If what she told me is true, and I have no reason to doubt her words, the girl they keep here is in great danger. This place really gives me the creeps."
Mar 12, 2023 1:29 pm
Not sure whether or not being assigned to the servants quarters is a good or a bad thing, Albert decides to agree in a more neutral way. "If this is where you have some spare room, we thank you for the hospitality, sir. The rest will do us good." While the baron is busy relaying the orders of a room to be prepared, he grabs another chunk of meat and swig of his drink, giving Roald a wink.
Mar 13, 2023 10:48 am
"So he did steal the mayor's daughter?!? And now they want to sacrifice her?" Albert can hardly believe his ears. "Oh this is bad. What do we do, guys?" He paces up and down the room.

"Did she tell you when this would be, Norbert? How much time do we have?"

Albert also tells Norbert everything they discussed with the baron.
Mar 13, 2023 2:31 pm
"No, NO, she said nothing about the time. Do you think we should go and find her? Now? How do we find her? Do you think the baron is involved? Does he plan to do it in three days? Is that why he was upset about that timing? Where can Marisella be?"

Norbert takes a few deep breaths.

"We can't get Marisella involved, she is to young an innocent. We can't put her into such a danger."

Do you usually pay attention to this? (Bright nights might keep the predators away and make a shepherds night easier.)
It is not much celebrated in this valley, but you have been reminded of stories the old people used to tell of 'Summer Solstice Festivals'... it is possible that that is in three days time as well.
OOC:
What, if anything, have you all seen that suggests preparation for a Summer Solstice Festival? Anyone should answer.
Mar 15, 2023 7:58 am
"He did have a bit of an odd reaction when Roald mentioned a meeting in three days." Albert remarks. "It's not much to go on, but I'm guessing he's got important plans on that day at least."
Mar 15, 2023 2:26 pm
"Pfff, my grandmother would have liked him. It is the summer solstice that night." I've heard stories that the old folk dance around naked around a fire. I hope it doesn't help with fertillity, I don't need more aunts or uncles." Norbert says with a sheepish grin. If the dog could, it would roll its eyes at Norberts childish attempt to sound more experienced.
Norbert is still in awe of the levelheadednes of the two men. They seem to have an answer for every situation and keep their cool even though everything goes to ... well yes. It was difficult these last days.
"They won't need the fire, it will be a full moon and if the rainclouds stay away it will be clear as day. With a full moon most predators stay away from the flock and you can get a good sleep if you don't believe to many stories."
Mar 15, 2023 10:39 pm
"That has to be it then!" Albert thinks back to his days of being an initiate at the temple. "I do remember learning about such practices back at the temple. But they are definitely not condoned by the temple anymore."

He looks at the others. "So, what do we do? How do we find the girl?"
OOC:
I don't know when this will be exactly, but before Albert goes to sleep he'd like to ask Raynor for guidance. If this is indeed against his religion, then it's not illogical to think that Raynor would like to stop it from happening.
Mar 17, 2023 9:12 am
Roald is thinking, analyzing the situation.
"We are forgetting something. In my opinion, rescuing the girl should be our number one priority. But what are we going to do with the mission we were set out to do? When the mayor learns that it was Chlodomer that kidnapped his daughter, I suspect there will be a battle very soon. And IF we rescue her, and bring her back, I am not very inclined to speak in favor of Chlodomer. If all this offering of virgins is true, he is an evil man. Maybe we should work towards stopping him for good"
Mar 17, 2023 9:44 am
"Hmm." Albert runs Roald's idea through his head. "Maybe we can tell Childebert about the sacrifice? I don't know if he's a very lawful man, but we can say that it's the perfect reason to kick Chlodomer off his 'throne'. He'll probably be all too happy to take that position for himself. And when Chlodomer saves the mayor's daughter he'll be so grateful that it solves the anger towards the baron."

"We could do it on our own as well, but we would risk a fight with more guards than we can handle. Unless we can get the resistance involved."
Mar 17, 2023 2:12 pm
"It sounds like we need a small army to get all that done. We send someone to the mayor, to baron Childebert, to the resistance,... I don't see how this is possible, even if we have three more days to get the girl out of here. I also feel that just contacting the resistance-brothers won't help them on their feet. They looked like they needed more guidance. If we could get into contact with that guy from the forest, he might be able to get them in shape."
Norbert feels he is getting too excited again. The mixture of fatigue, fear and the rollercoaster of emotions is taking its toll.
"And the mayors son would probably be the best placed to speak to him. If we can find them we would only need to speak to the baron, should be a breeze."
Mar 20, 2023 12:56 am
Roals sighs:" How exactly did we get mixed up in all of this? Our options are:
- find the girl as soon as possible, maybe even toninght,
- or leave first thing in the morning and gather an army to get rid of Chlodomer.
I like our chances best with the first option, there will be a battle anyway, but if we have the girl, there is no time pressure anyore."

Roald ponders for a moment: "how about, we combine the two. We do as Norbert said, dispatch messages to Childerbert and the mayor... maybe to Olaf too, telling them to come in force. With the enemy at his gates Chlodomer will have his guards spread thin and that will give us a window to extract the girl"
Mar 20, 2023 9:59 am
"That sounds sensible. Let's send out messages first thing in the morning. In the meantime, we've got 3 days to find and rescue the girl."

Albert turns to Norbert. "Norbert, we can definitely use your, and your dog's, help with this. But it's not something to take lightly. So if you want to back out and return to your flock, this might be your last chance." He tells him, not wanting to push this youngster into danger but seeing the value of his skills.
Mar 21, 2023 10:31 am
Norbert inhales to tell them he is all in, but holds his breath for a couple of seconds. "It is definitly not what I expected. Less monsters and more people who behave like monsters. ... But yes, I feel like I can help and make a difference in some situations. But preparing to fight against a man who shares his house with us because we suspect him from vile behaviour is a big step for me."

He looks at the dog, nodds and adds: "How do we find Olaf and his friends? And where is the son of the mayor?"
Mar 22, 2023 7:24 pm
"Maybe we can walk the hallways for a bit and talk to other servants? Hopefully we can find out more about "the festivities. For all they know, we are here exactly for that event"
Mar 23, 2023 1:07 pm
"Well, since we couldn't find Olaf or Theo in town or on the road, we can't presume our message will get to them in time. Best to send it to the mayor and the other baron then, I think." Albert tells Norbert. "But you're right, we only have suspicion right now. A little girl might not be the most reliable source of information."

He listens to Roald's idea. "That may be a good way to go. Do you want to stick together or split up?"
Mar 23, 2023 11:21 pm
'' Best to split up, we cover more ground and are less intimidating. I see you all back here in a short time.''
And with that Roald opened the door and slips out. He listens carefully if he hears some people talking,... Drinking maybe?
He walks the hallway casually, not at all sneaky, as if he belongs.
Mar 24, 2023 12:44 am
- Roald -

A floorboard creaks and one of the men drinking at the table turns and sees you. "Hey." He greets happily, holding out a pint. "Come join us."

What do you do?
Mar 24, 2023 8:23 am
"I'm going to go to bed so I can get up early and warn the mayor. Maybe one of you can write a letter, that might have more gravitas than the rablings of a young shepard." Norbert says while supressing a big yawn. "It would do us no good if I were to be turned away."
Mar 26, 2023 6:00 am
"Again?!?" Norbert exclaims as the dog whines. "You just went. Ugh. Lets go outside again."

Norbert gets up and goes outside with the dog. He lets her run around a bit and looks happily at her for a bit while she sniffs around. When she comes back he plays a little while with her. Pushing her, rolling her on the floor and hugging her. When he gets up to go inside he feels rejuvinated.

"Lets go look where Roald got to. Maybe he wants some company."
Mar 26, 2023 9:15 am
Roald puts on his biggest smile. '' good evening to you all! What are we celebrating?''
One of the guys shrugs, '' jst the 'nd of de day, I spose''
By the slurr in his words he can tell the men are sitting here for some time already.
'' Thank you for your kind offer, but I cannot join you in drinking. Is it ok if I keep you guys company for a bit?''
One of the other men bumps his head on the table and begins to snore heavily. He gets an elbow from the guy next to him Which makes him fall of the bench, looks like he's happy lying there.
whow, this is some party... Better not stick around for too long

A third person on his left is frowning: ''what do you mean, you can't drink, I won't have any of that here! Grab a pint for this adventurer!'' the man shouts at no one in particular, and no one is moving to act on his order.
at least I can understand what he's saying

The man reaches to the other side of the table to get a hold on an (almost) empty cup.

Roald is thinking quickly... What should I tell them? Maybe the truth will do just fine.

'' Listen, I really appreciate your offer but...'' Roald continues in an intriguing whisper ''If I drink, I turn into a violent warrior, last time I punched a random guy half to death, so you understand why I can't join you'' he looks the man straight in the eyes.
The man nods and swallows.

Roald continues:

''say, maybe you can help me out. We are wondering if it is a good idea to stick around for the festivities this week. Is it worth staying for? What exactly is happening?''
Mar 26, 2023 9:26 am
- Roald -

"You you turn into a a 'warrior'?" The articulate drunk asks sloshing something into a cup and pushing it in front of you. "I would like to shee that. You can punch Gar," he indicates the man on the floor. "He is used to it, that's why he why he drinks."

"What'sh 'feshtivities'?" He asks, not paying as much attention to your words as to the fact that you are being rude.

What do you do?
Mar 26, 2023 7:07 pm
Albert agrees with splitting up and decides to go the other way from where Roald went. There's got to be some kind of shrine here somewhere. He thought, looking for any kind of place of worship. He could do with come guidance right about now, and with some luck he'd meet some other inhabitants or guests.
Mar 28, 2023 9:13 am
After asking around for a short while Norbert stumbles into across Roald and the drinking men: "Can I join? What are we having?"

The dog sniffs a bit at peoples feet and present itself to being petted. "After his first drink Nobert overcomes his shyness a bit and starts asking about life in a "castle".

"Do you men live here all year round? Can you go to the festivals in town? Can you stay here if you get married?"
Mar 28, 2023 2:47 pm
Roald is glad Norbert has come in. Hmmm maybe he should have a drink... Just one, wouldn't hurt, would it?
He quickly changes his thoughts and pulls the dog closer.
''We don't need beer, right.'' He whispers to the dog.

Maybe it is just your own thoughts, but the slant of the dog's eyebrow and tone of her curious whine suggests that "beer would be great if it were offered".

"Oh, yeah. I am here all the time." The main speaker replies to your first (listed) question. "But many of these blokes are new, working on the stupid 'wall' or 'playing at soldier-guards'. I don't know how we will feed everyone later. But at least it means the beer-accounting is lax and we can splurge out without them noticing." He grins and pours you another mug.

At the mention of 'wives' and 'festivities' his brow furrows, like he is trying to decide if he should take offence or not. You have clearly hit upon a touchy subject. If you don't defuse or distract, you get the feeling there may be a fight, and Roald has not even had the beer he needs to fuel him up for bar-fights.

Norbert is taken a bit aback by the reaction. "I saw few families here and wondered if people move away to settle on a farm or if there are just not many oppertunities to meet people. Somehow the baron does not seem to entertain many people."
Mar 30, 2023 6:55 am
Norbert is definitely not used to being around drunk people or pubs. Somehow his brothers kept him away from the village inn. The hopes he did not upset anyone and people will see that he is just a young friendly guy.

"What have you heard?!" Your conversation partner demands. "None of the men are allowed to go. It is not just my wife... Even the baron isn't...! I did not want to go anyway..." His spluttered protests die down into a sulk as he wallows back into another sip of his beer.

You have accidentally besmirched his manliness and possibly implied his wife is bossing him around and telling him he can't go to the celebration.

Even though they have not been a big thing for most of your life, you have not heard of such traditional festivities being gendered... But there was that 'women's group' that you heard about in the queue back in the village... And there was that weird tension with Olaf's wife and her friend...

Maybe, with your 'local knowledge' and your friends' experience, you can make something of this conundrum?

You find a quiet moment for contemplation, but you are not the only person looking for solitude. Exiting by a --mostly unguarded-- back gate you spot a figure that looks remarkably like the baron himself sneaking off into the dark. The guard on duty does not acknowledge the man and studiously looks the other way, whistling to himself and making it clear he 'saw nothing and nobody'.

Mar 30, 2023 9:00 pm
After searching the hallways for any sort of shrine, it quickly became clear to Albert that this was not that kind of place. He decided to instead take a late night stroll through the garden. The fresh air and sounds of nature would soothe his mind if nothing else. A faint whistle catches his attention and he can see a last glimpse of what looks like it could be the baron walking off.

Where's he going this late? I doubt he'd be one to use an outhouse. And by his walk, it looks like he's not just going for a casual stroll. Is the first thought that goes through his mind. Quickly followed by: What if he's going to check on the girl? I need to find out.

Albert stays at a distance, but tries to keep the baron in his sights.

The baron quickly ends up on the main road, heading the opposite direction you came in on. There is not much cover to hide you, but you can also be fairly certain that you can follow at a distance, or even gather your companions and catch up.
OOC:
The last part is mainly for if we don't want to split the party. You can get the others and still follow the baron.

"The whole valley is full of women behaving out of the ordinary. My grandmother used to tell a tale from when she was just a wee lass: There was a witch in the woods who get all women together and fill their heads with dangerous talk. One of the farmers we met a few days ago had almost the same kind of trouble. I just hope my mother is not getting into this. My father would not be able to deal with her."

Hearing the glass slam on the table a few time in short succession, Norbert looks over to Roald. "Is that how one is supposed to drink this? I'm not sure I will last very long if I try to keep up. I'm still getting used to the taste."
Mar 31, 2023 2:38 pm
- Norbert and Roald -

"'The Witch of the Woods'?... Yeah... it is all her fault." Your companion agrees with Norbert's grandmother. "Else my wife would never behave this way." You are not sure he has ever heard of this before, but it offers an excuse for his situation.

Still angry, though, he looks over at Roald with a scowl. "Oh? Now you're suddenly good enough to drink our beer?" He asks --getting it wrong in his indignation. "I don't think so." He tries to take the keg away.

Not far down the road at all you see a light, it turns out to be the inn the baron told you was nowhere near here and you hear a brief snatch of voices which drop to silence as he enters. After he has closed the door the voices resume, but a little more restrained-sounding.

The windows in the front are greasy and smudged on the inside, but it might be possible to find one to see through.

What do you do?
Apr 1, 2023 1:37 pm
Roald holds on to the keg. Both men pulling from the other side. He stares the man in the eye and growls with his teeth closed "I never said you weren't good enough. now. let. go."
It's turning into a keg-o-war, one hand firmly round the wooden cup, they are both not giving in.
The other guy's face is turning red from the effort. He returns Roald's gaze but is to preoccupied (and drunk) to talk back.
OOC:

The keg is slipping away from him so he pinches it just a bit harder. First there is a small crackling sound, followed by a loud crack as the cup breaks. Beer is flying across the room onto everybody.
For a moment nothing happens and everyone sits in silence but then the person that was talking to Norbert starts laughing, silently at first but louder each second. Roald's opponent isn't laughing though. He bites his lip wanting to throw an insult at Roald, if only not to lose face. But taking a look at his friends having tears in their eyes makes it clear there will be no help from them when it would come to a fight.
The man stands up pushing his stool backwards, he grabs the stool and throws it over Roald against the wall.
The laughing stops as he turns and leaves the room. When the door slams shut he hears a roaring laughter coming from behind the closed door.
Apr 2, 2023 5:47 am
The dog jumps up ar sound of the crashing keg. With disgust Norbert thinks about the smell of beer he wil need to get out of her fur.

"That is a real shame." The others might think he talks about the beer.

"Albert would have liked a taste of that. Do you think he will come?" Norbert asks with a hint of concern in his voice.
Apr 2, 2023 6:04 pm
Is that an inn??? That lying ba...ron! He moves closer, quietly, trying to get to a window where he could have a little peek inside. Hopefully unnoticed. Maybe he'll hear something interesting too.

As he's getting closer, he keeps an eye out for movement and noise, which could lead to him getting caught. This has to be where they're keeping her.

You have the bright moon behind you --illuminating your head-- and the dim-but-cheery lights inside, so, unless you are prepared to expose yourself, you can not see much through the grimy window.

The other patrons appear to be trying to ignore the fact that the baron has come into their drinking-hole --in minimal-and-bad disguise-- but they don't seem surprised, indicating that this is not an unusual occurrence.

You can't see clearly, but the you think you spot the baron at a table near the back. You can't see who he is meeting with, all that is visible is a large stomach intruding out of the shadows covering their face.

Albert is annoyed that this window is too grimy to look through. He decides he knows enough to go and tell the others and heads back to their room to explain what he's seen.

Roald is laughing with the others, though he is not really sure why exactly.
One of the guys stands up: "I'm gonna turn in, let's hope Marek doesn't remember what happened here, we'll be in for a rough day tomorrow" he wipes the tears from his eyes.
Putting two and two together Roald guesses the man that stormed off is Marek, and he's some sort of boss of the others.
Since everybody is preparing to leave, Roald also stands, but loses his balance and sits back again.
All this time being sober made him become drunk more easely.
He stands up again, slower this time.
"le-het's go Norbert" he hickups. "Let's go a-hand find Albert"

Apr 7, 2023 1:51 pm
Albert is indeed already in bed, but only sitting on it. He waited for the others to return. If that hadn't been the case, he would definitely have been woken up by Roald's unstable walking. "What happened?" He asks Norbert when he sees them. The question quickly answers itself when he gets a whiff of the smell of alcohol coming from Roald.

"How much has he had to drink? He should know better!" It reminds Albert of the times that Roald had been drunk in his bar. "Let's up him on the bed, he should be fine tomorrow."

After helping Roald to bed, he tells Norbert what he saw the baron do tonight. "Unfortunately, I wasn't able to see who he was talking to in there. But it's very suspicious that he told us there's no inn nearby. We should probably investigate that place tomorrow. What do you think, Norbert?"
Apr 10, 2023 6:47 am
Roald lies down on the bed and starts snoring in an instant.
Apr 10, 2023 2:08 pm
"A good night sleep will make our decisions better, I believe." Norbert adds in a sleepy voice. "Maybe visiting the inn when there is no crowd will make the innkeeper more talkative."

He mumbles while resting his head on a pillow. Beds are great he thinks. This pillow is soft,....

He sleeps with a slight smile and looks his young age.

"Albert, wake up, arm yourself" He whispers very loudly.

Roald slowly gets out of bed and positions himself next to the door, his back to the wall.

Albert watches Norbert slip past him through the now open door. He follows the axe as it hits one of the men square in the knee with a crunch sound. That can't be good. He thinks while the man lets out a yelp of pain. With the other men running away, he rushes over to the injured person to make sure he's ok. Though he makes sure to have a good look at the fleeing bandits, making mental notes of some of their clothes, stature and hair color.

"Yes, let's get him inside." He replies as he tries to help the man into the room carefully. "Don't worry, we don't mean you any harm. Well... not anymore at least. But that's your own fault for trying to ambush us!"
Apr 13, 2023 9:00 pm
Your prisoner seems indignant at your objection to his ambush, and offended by Albert's calm tone, but he starts to relax... until he sees the dog.

"Oh, gods!" He exclaim in fear. "It's the monster! My cousin warned me! It ate his whole arm right off!"

Apr 13, 2023 9:08 pm
Roald is taken by surprise by Norbert's action.
This fellow has hidden skills
He gives Norbert a smile and a 'well-done' nod.

''Shut your pie hole'' he hisses whilst waving his sword.
Apr 13, 2023 9:14 pm
"OK! OK! Just keep it away from me!" He begs, trying to scramble as far away from the dog as he can while obeying all orders.

He is well and truly cowed. His fear and loathing of you all is clearly written on his every expression.

What do you do?
Apr 14, 2023 5:25 am
Norbert positions himself at the door with the dog. He pull her close and rubs her belly and lets het lick his face. He looks at Roald and raises his shoulders slightly.

Once the worst of the shaking is over he asks the man: "What were you thinking? This could have gotten out of hand really quickly."
Apr 14, 2023 7:03 am
"Yes, I have to say, you're running with the wrong crowd there." Albert chimes in. "Why were you trying to get in anyway? If we've done you wrong in some way, I'm sure we didn't do it on purpose." His voice sounds genuine when saying this.
"If you have troubles, perhaps praying to Raynor could help you find your path forward."
Apr 14, 2023 10:32 am
Your prisoner looks at you, agog at your questions.

"We can't let scum like you wander around our valley! Attacking barons, maiming guards, kidnapping daughters, breaking knees!" The last one he is taking personally.

Nothing you have done so far has convinced him you are not sociopaths.

What do you do?
Apr 14, 2023 6:06 pm
Roald puts down his sword, there are three of them + the dog so they'll be safe enough.
"WOW WOW. What do you mean: attacking barons, maiming guards and kidnapping daughters??? We have done no such thing. Where did you hear these stories? And,... who send you?"
Apr 14, 2023 6:40 pm
"You're lying!" Your prisoner shouts back at you with full conviction. "And no one 'sent' us. We are here to stop you, we are just doing what is right."

Aside from the kidnapping, you actually did do what he is accusing you of. [ref] Though his facts seem a bit distorted. Convincing him of your 'innocence' in what you did may be harder than outright lying and denying everything.

Something extreme will be needed to get this guy on your side. Maybe that is out of the question for now? He is scared enough that he in unlikely to resist interrogation.

What do you do?
Apr 16, 2023 8:42 am
Roald assesses the man for a moment. Could this guy be trusted... He might have the information we're looking for...

"Allright, maybe we started off on the wrong foot here. You say we kidnapped a girl, that is completely untrue. In fact, we are here to find and rescue her. We may not look like it but, just like you, we are the good guys in this story. I would like to appoligize on behalf of my friend for the busted knee, we will help you patch it up. It's just that... sometimes he and his dog are a bit out of control."
While saying these last words, Roald turns his head and winks at Norbert. Hopefully he understands Roald is playing 'good guard, bad guard'.

"Tell me, what do you know about this kidnapping, any information is welcome"

"Out of control?" Norbert thinks outraged. "How could he!?"

"Oh." His inner voice goes at the wink. "Right." He kneels next to the dog ans whispers in her ear. Three breaths later the dog starts growling.
"Give the man the chance to answer. He might not be in league with the kidnappers." Norbert says to the dog.
Apr 16, 2023 11:39 am
Your prisoner does not look at all like he believes you --and why should he? But he almost reacts defensively to Norbert's implication that he might be 'in league' (though he does not know what 'league' means, isn't that something to do with boats?).

You can see the wheels turning in his mind: What harm can it do to tell them what I know? he is thinking.

"I know," He declares defiantly. "That you where amongst the last people to see the girl. That you dined with the mayor and his daughter just before she vanished." He looks proud at himself that he was so clear and concise.

Something nags at some of you about his specific wording.

Apr 16, 2023 12:15 pm
Albert in the mean time is keeping an eye on the door. Every now and then checking the hallway, just in case. They think we're the bad guys? Right now he doesn't want to interrupt the interrogation, so he decides to stay quiet and think.

Apr 16, 2023 1:23 pm
"What? Me? With the mayor? Of course not!" Your prisoner exclaims at Roald's question/accusation. "I have not been near the village in ... at least two years!" Which in his mind establishes his alibi and innocence.

He does not comment on how he then 'knows' you were there.

Apr 18, 2023 10:44 am
"This is getting ridiculous!" Norbert exclaims. "We are here to rescue this girl from a horrible death and now he accuses us of kidnapping her. The nerve! And to think I felt sorry for hurting him." He turns to the man. "You should be ashamed for speaking to these men in such a way. They are heroes in the village. MY village! I fear they are that girls only hope."

Deep in his heart he hopes Albert will be able to save the mans knee, but he can't bare the injustice from the accusations.

"This is to much, I need fresh air." He goes out to the yard, the dog right on his heels.
Apr 18, 2023 2:44 pm
Albert is stunned by Norbert's outburst. He lets him, and the dog, walk past when they try to exit the room. He opens his mouth to say something, but can't really think of any words and so his mouth just closes again.

Curious to hear what this man has to say to all that, Albert turns to look at him. A stern look on his face.

There is no one in view right outside the door. It is shameful of them to have abandoned their friend, but you don't get the impression they are coming back. But you also doubt the rest of them will have gone too far

You did not get the impression that they needed to force their way into the baron's home, it seemed like they were welcomed and among friends. Norbert may end up facing whoever remains on his own if you let him go out there alone.

While you know you are not guilty... or at least that you meant no harm, it might be becoming apparent to you that your actions have left a trail of suspicion that could all add up to your looking very guilty in the eyes of the locals. Something in the precise words used rings a bell and if you could just decipher it and follow through on it, you and your party may be able to get your feet under you for the first time since arriving in this valley.

This is the culmination of many times you all backed off from learning what is happening. Clearly something happened last night. And you were warned that you had a deadline (two days, now) and that going to sleep might be sub-optimal. :)

Albert tugs at Norbert's sleeve just as he's about to walk out of reach. "Be careful. The others might still be around."

"You might not have heard it, but it's the truth. Does that look like the reaction of a man who is lying? We're trying our best to save this girl." He walks closer to the man. "But, it looks like your heart is in the right place. Even if you've been misled." With a more friendly tone he continues. "What's your name? Let me have a look at that knee. I might be able to help with the pain."
Apr 19, 2023 8:29 am
Roald lets Albert take over the interrogation. It gives him some time to think about what had been said already.
The man was pretty sure and correct about the passed events, except for the kidnapping of course.
He hasn't been in the village for 2 years... What if he has a connection to Igor, let's see if that name rings a bell.

Your prisoner flinches away as the dog passes, then shuffles backwards, trying to move away from you as you approach. He seems genuinely scared of you guys and your reputation.

"M m my name? Le..." He cuts himself off. "Why do you want to know my name?" He demands suspiciously... or is it superstitiously? There are all sorts of superstitions about names.

Norbert acknowledges Alberts warning with an affirmative "Harumpf".

Once outside he suddenly feel very exposed. Looking at the dog calm composure he relaxes a bit but keeps his wit about them. Thinking back at last night he wonders about Roalds behaviour. The change was so sudden and ... and intimidating. Scary even. "I should ask him afterwards." He tells the dog.

Not only to find some food, Norbert gets himself over to the Kitchen. "Hi, is breakfast being served? Can I help?"

The yard outside is full of men, they all eye you warily as you make your way to the kitchen. They are not obviously following you, but you feel surrounded.

The cook, who was none too friendly last night... (and is the one who saw you 'trying to lure a girl away'... could Marisella be the baron's daughter your prisoner was talking about?)... picks up a large ladle and glares at you. "You are not welcome here." She says.

"Well knowing your name would help when I implore Raynor to heal your wounds." Albert replies in a very casual way. "Besides, I can't keep calling you 'dude' or 'guy'. My name is Albert. Now, let's have a look at that knee." He tries to give off a sense of calm that could put the man at ease.

Everything in the valley seems to have been set up to keep you and your party on the backfoot. Something has been messing with these people for a while and your presence here seems to have escalated things somehow.

The mayor seemed caught up in his petty politics and power-plays in the village, from what Theo (the mayor's son) said he has never left the village, nor shown any interest in seeing the surroundings for himself.

How did 'the resistance' know about the kidnap? Why did they assume you were there to help them? OK, on that last on it may be your fault for leading them to believe that, but they seemed primed to accept you as ringleaders. Theo seemed very surprised that his father would have anything to do with any of that or those people.

You did not get to meet the far-away baron, but have heard rumours that there are some sort of family relations between him and this one. People who are not dealing directly with them tend to get them confused with each other and their behaviour and attitude is pretty similar.

Theo also let slip that there was a feud of some sort between his own father and his father's brother. And there was definite tension with Olaf and Christian, but that may have been mostly Olga? Olaf implied that he was not welcome over this side of the valley, and that may have had a 'family' feel to it, but you can't know for sure.

There are patterns and symmetries here. But you don't have all the facts.

The words your prisoner used ring a bell, you are sure you have heard them before... Yes, it was tense and stressful, and rainy and thundery, and you were trying to hide, but those might be the exact same words Nixon said to Olaf at that lone oak tree in the ring of mushrooms in the middle of the night. [ref] And how on earth did he arrange that meeting?

Albert's (or is it Raynor's) miracle turned the tide there, but you get the feeling that, had things not gone that way, Olaf would have suspected you of the kidnap. Maybe it is good you got out of town before the mayor got hold of you, his ear may have similarly poisoned against you.

Albert is fed up with these accusations. Even though they have a base of truth, this guy is obviously being misled and is talking big about things he doesn't even know half of. "Now listen here, boy, .." He says to the man who is not a teenager, but still far enough away from Albert's age to warrant the use of 'boy'. "..I've had just about enough of your accusations. You may believe what you've been told, but it's obvious that you were not a first-hand witness in any of this and that you are just talking 'out your behind'." His face which was gentle and calming earlier turns to annoyed and iritated. "So, before you go around accusing people and ambushing them while they are asleep in a place that offered them sanctum for the night, like some petty thief, maybe you should use that head of yours and consider that things are not always the way others tell you they are. And that actions have consequences." At this his eyes drift to the man's knee.

"In fact, if you'd taken the time to bother investigating what's going on, you would have realized that there is more at play here and some strangers trying to kidnap a girl. You are being manipulated into fighting the wrong enemy. And how exactly do you expect us to react to that, huh? Do enlighten me! Should we just give up and confess to a crime we didn't commit?"

"I'll give you 2 options. Either you let us patch you up and you join our investigation to get to the bottom of this. Or you can sit here with your injury and hope to the gods that you don't run into us again soon. Cause there is a young girl in some serious danger out there! I'm done wasting what little time we have left on you." On the word 'done' he slams the butt of his staff onto the floor for emphasis.

"So, what'll it be?"

With an angry muttering the men in the yard par and make way for you to pass through. Not one of them is willing to be the first to attack you and your dog, but you get the strong feeling that any of them would be the second. You are atop a powder-keg.
Apr 21, 2023 10:03 am
With a sigh Norbert leans against the door after closing it behind it. As fast as possible without running, Norbert makes his way back to their room.

He sounds a little worried that they have not done so yet. "We outnumber you." This last part is true, but he sounds more like he is trying to convince himself, or hoping to convince/remind any of them who may be overhearing this.

They did not follow you into the building, but you can hear the sounds of them out there. Someone seems to be talking, trying to convince them to act. You don't know how long they will wait.

Between leaving and coming back you are sure their numbers have increased. More people are streaming in from the surrounding area.
Apr 21, 2023 3:42 pm
- Roald -

You get the impression no amount of talking will solve this. You will need to find and present convincing evidence of your 'innocence' before they change their minds.

It may be a challenge to find evidence adequate to convince all of them. These simple --but angry and scared-- farmers may want different things than the mayor of the village or the baron on the other side of the valley.

Apr 21, 2023 10:39 pm
"You may outnumber us, but we have fought monstrosities that would leave you in need of a fresh pair of pants." Albert replies in a grim way. "But have it your way then."

He decides to ignore the man from now on and turns to talk to Roald. "I guess we're not as welcome here as we thought. Might be best to leave. What do you think?"
Apr 22, 2023 3:14 pm
Walking trough the door Norbert says: "I believe we have overstayed our welcome. I hope that Marisella girl will be OK. I would never have my child grow up in here."

Looking at the man on the floor: "I am sorry about your knee. This man and his god are able to help you if you let him." Not waiting for a reaction he raises his shoulders and turns around to Albert. "OK?"
Apr 22, 2023 3:44 pm

Your (soon-to-be-ex-)prisoner glares at you, taking your words as confirmation that you wanted to lure Marisella away from here.
Apr 22, 2023 8:30 pm
Albert nods at Norbert and grabs his things, ready to leave.
Apr 24, 2023 11:26 am
Roald raises his fist at the man on the ground, jaws locked together teeth showing. "GRRRR, I should... WRRAAHG! He stares the guy in the eye. "you have no idea... you idiot, if this is over you come find us and apologize before we find you, or..."
He starts taking his belongings without averting his gaze. Between his teeth he says:"Let's go my friends, we shall find another way to rescue this girl and bring her back to her father.
Apr 25, 2023 8:47 am
"If we want to get out without hurting anyone else we will have to be quick about it." Norbert says pretty downcast. This whole situation does not sit well with him. "There were a few pretty tense faces in the yard. They did not seem seasond warriors, but they will probably make dumb decisions if pushed. So best avoid the confrontation."
Apr 25, 2023 10:53 am
"Hmm. Maybe we should look for another exit then." Albert adds."There's bound to be another way out."
OOC:
The door that Albert saw the baron leave during the night. Is that the same door as where the men are or a different one?
Apr 26, 2023 9:40 am
Albert lets Roald take the lead in finding another way out of the house. "Anyone see an exit for the servants anywhere? Once we're outside, I know a gate out by the yard that's only watched by one guard. At least it was last night."
Apr 27, 2023 8:34 am
Roald is sneaking through the halls carefully avoiding places with armed people. He doubts there are servants willing to attack them, but if he can, he will avoid them too.
Luckily with everyone gathering outside it is easier than expected. A sudden feeling of responsibility for his two companions comes over him. Maybe he is also guilty about his slip up last night.

Stay focused now, don't let your guard down, there can be a foe around every corner.
Apr 27, 2023 1:11 pm
Norbert indicates the direction of the yard "That way is pretty crowded. Best take the other direction."

Looking back at the man in the room hes solemnly adds :"I'm truly sorry."
Apr 27, 2023 3:33 pm
Albert puts a hand on Norbert's shoulder. Perhaps he heard his words, or he could just read it from the look on his face. "Sometimes the world and the gods guide us into situations we didn't mean to end up in." He says softly. "We must face these challenges with resolve. I will pray for him tonight. You are welcome to join me."

Then he continues in the direction suggested by Norbert.
Apr 27, 2023 8:47 pm
Your prisoner shows Norbert a rude sign with the hand not clutching his injured leg. It will take more than whispered words to heal the hurt there.

The commotion in the courtyard and the men coming into the property has left the servants nervous. As your party makes its way down the halls you hear quiet rustling of clothes and closing doors as they barricade themselves away from you, but you don't catch more than the merest glimpse of anyone. Only the cook stands her ground as you leave via the back way, again slapping her palm with a large ladle and glaring, but she does not try to stop you or call out for help.

All the men seem to be collected round the front, the guards are with them and the postern gate is abandoned and open (not that 'open' matters much with the palisade only half built).

You can make you way into the surrounding forest.

Alberts words mean the world to Norbert taking the sting out of the gesture by the man. This wil mark Norbert for life: knowing he crippled the man, the way he treated them so unfairly and the way he refused the well meant aid.

"Can't be any worse than here." Norbert answers Roald.
