The Other Baron (RP)

'' We don't work for Childebert, sir. Three days is approximately the time we will be needing to set up the meeting and talk to the other parties. We thought it respectful to come to you first, you see. But that means we have to go all the way back to inform the other baron and the mayor.''

Roald wants to add something about the lost time waiting in the waiting room, but wisely keeps that to himself.

"Childebert doesn't matter. He would have nothing to say that is worth hearing. He is too stubborn to listen to reason." Chlodomer declares, he does not come out and say it, but you get the impression --from all you have heard-- that his lifelong rivalry with the other baron means he would not be willing to go to a meeting if he knew his enemy were to be there.

He seems quite content to broker a peace where the valley comes under one rule, just so long as Childebert is not involved. In his mind everything you have said so far leads to him ruling, which he agrees would be better. None of this seems to come as a surprise to him either, the way he is listening --and not listening to bits the don't fit his worldview-- suggests he may have known such plans were in action even before you came up with them.

The only thing the seemed to penetrate his armour-of-self-assurance was the mention of 'three days from now'. That is definitely a sore-point for some reason.

"Ah, but that is exactly why we have to invite him, sir!" Albert chimes in with a mischievous smile. He takes a roasted chicken leg from the table at this point and bites into it. He swallows before continuing.

"If Childebert were not to attend this meeting, then he will surely claim that it was all a setup to overrun his rule without him having any say. But if he is there, he will have to accept the outcome. And I have no doubt that you can come up with a clever way to leave with the upper hand. Let's be honest, and I hope this stays between us but, to swindle Childebert it doesn't even have to be that clever, right sir?" He winks at the baron.

"You are not wrong." The baron agrees with your assessment of his rival's dimness. "But who cares if he 'accepts', we can make him accept." He sounds delighted by the prospect and seems to have included you in the 'we' that would do the making.

"Tell me all you plans." Chlodomer says suddenly leaning forward and sounding 'reasonable but forceful' in a way that suggests he is trying one of those 'negotiation techniques' you have heard bar patrons boasting about learning.

You don't get the feeling you will get too much out of him if you continue on the same track, he was visibly spooked by something about the date you guys proposed, but also has his own vision of how things are going and that does not quite fit with what you have presented so far. You get the feeling he came into this negotiation 'knowing what was going to be said' and is not actually listening to what is being said. He seems to know about most of your points, but his responses don't quite align with what you think is going on.

Roald picks up again.
'' sir, you seemed not happy with the date I proposed for the meeting with Childebert and the mayor, would you like to propose one yourself? Than Albert and I can talk it over and see if it fits our time schedule.''

Roald completely ignores the question about telling 'all the plans' .

Chlodomer eyes you very suspiciously when you suggest that you have a schedule and that it aligns with his 'three day panic'.

"My wife..." He starts to say before changing his mind. "I need to talk to... my people." He settles on, though you don't get the impression he is one to listen to the people he surrounds himself with.
You have recently found your --previously unknown-- leadership skills being put to the test, and have been noticing human behaviour quirks. If you keep pushing on the baron with your own facts there is a fair chance he will break and this cooperative persona might vanish.

Something also nags at you about the timeline, but you can not put your finger on exactly what. Perhaps, if you can have a private word with both of your companions, you can decipher that quandary.

Noticing this change in the baron's behavior, Albert is inclined to let it rest for now. He doesn't want to get this guy angry. "Roald, seeing as it's already late. I think we should retire for the night and give the baron the chance to sleep on it." Then he turns to the baron. "Can you recommend an inn nearby, sir? Or perhaps you have some quarters available?"

- Roald and Albert

"There is no inn around here." The baron says, making it sound like a boast. "I will have rooms made up... in the servants quarters." He adds this last almost as an afterthought, but his beady eyes watch for any reaction to this possible slight.
OOC:
We can assume you meet up with Norbert after his chat. Unless something extreme happens in Norbert's scene they should take about the same amount of in-game time.

"That's horrible" Norbert whispers. In a louder voice so the cook can hear him he adds: "Could you show me where I can take the dog for short walk, I would not want her to soil the courtyard."

When they are out of earshot of the cook he asks: "Are you shure? where do they keep her? Where did she came from? Are you safe?" all in one breath and with a trace of panic in his voice.

"Anywhere out there is fine." Marisella says waving in the general direction of the stables or fields. But you get the feeling she does not care much about a mess in the courtyard either and is following your excuse to get some distance.

"What? How am I supposed to know?" She demands petulantly in reply to your first three questions. "They don't tell me anything." She sounds sulky about this fact.

"Oh, I am perfectly safe." She says, exaggerating her words. "No one would ever even consider that I could be a perfectly good sacrifice if it wasn't ..." She honestly sounds upset about this, probably (hopefully) she is after the adventure of being rescued.

"MARISELLA! I said it is time for bed!" She cook repeats as she fills the doorway, interrupting. Marisella, who was about to try to sneak off with you squeaks in panic, turns and runs back inside without another word.

While the dog does its thing Norbert tries to gather his thoughts and breath. He is thouroly shaken by this news. If it weren't for the knowledge that there is a girl missing he would have dismissed it as a young girls fantasies, but this can't be coincidence.

When he returns to the two men he recounts his findings. He has found his composure again, but if they where alert for it they would notice that the dog stays very close to Norbert.

"If what she told me is true, and I have no reason to doubt her words, the girl they keep here is in great danger. This place really gives me the creeps."
Mar 12, 2023 1:29 pm
Not sure whether or not being assigned to the servants quarters is a good or a bad thing, Albert decides to agree in a more neutral way. "If this is where you have some spare room, we thank you for the hospitality, sir. The rest will do us good." While the baron is busy relaying the orders of a room to be prepared, he grabs another chunk of meat and swig of his drink, giving Roald a wink.
Mar 13, 2023 10:48 am
"So he did steal the mayor's daughter?!? And now they want to sacrifice her?" Albert can hardly believe his ears. "Oh this is bad. What do we do, guys?" He paces up and down the room.

"Did she tell you when this would be, Norbert? How much time do we have?"

Albert also tells Norbert everything they discussed with the baron.
Mar 13, 2023 2:31 pm
"No, NO, she said nothing about the time. Do you think we should go and find her? Now? How do we find her? Do you think the baron is involved? Does he plan to do it in three days? Is that why he was upset about that timing? Where can Marisella be?"

Norbert takes a few deep breaths.

"We can't get Marisella involved, she is to young an innocent. We can't put her into such a danger."

'Three days?' Being out last night and watching it set, and seeing it rise (slightly less) early again tonight reminds you that it will be full moon three nights from now.
OOC:
Do you usually pay attention to this? (Bright nights might keep the predators away and make a shepherds night easier.)
It is not much celebrated in this valley, but you have been reminded of stories the old people used to tell of 'Summer Solstice Festivals'... it is possible that that is in three days time as well.
OOC:
What, if anything, have you all seen that suggests preparation for a Summer Solstice Festival? Anyone should answer.
Mar 15, 2023 7:58 am
"He did have a bit of an odd reaction when Roald mentioned a meeting in three days." Albert remarks. "It's not much to go on, but I'm guessing he's got important plans on that day at least."
Mar 15, 2023 2:26 pm
"Pfff, my grandmother would have liked him. It is the summer solstice that night." I've heard stories that the old folk dance around naked around a fire. I hope it doesn't help with fertillity, I don't need more aunts or uncles." Norbert says with a sheepish grin. If the dog could, it would roll its eyes at Norberts childish attempt to sound more experienced.
Norbert is still in awe of the levelheadednes of the two men. They seem to have an answer for every situation and keep their cool even though everything goes to ... well yes. It was difficult these last days.
"They won't need the fire, it will be a full moon and if the rainclouds stay away it will be clear as day. With a full moon most predators stay away from the flock and you can get a good sleep if you don't believe to many stories."
Mar 15, 2023 10:39 pm
"That has to be it then!" Albert thinks back to his days of being an initiate at the temple. "I do remember learning about such practices back at the temple. But they are definitely not condoned by the temple anymore."

He looks at the others. "So, what do we do? How do we find the girl?"
OOC:
I don't know when this will be exactly, but before Albert goes to sleep he'd like to ask Raynor for guidance. If this is indeed against his religion, then it's not illogical to think that Raynor would like to stop it from happening.
Mar 17, 2023 9:12 am
Roald is thinking, analyzing the situation.
"We are forgetting something. In my opinion, rescuing the girl should be our number one priority. But what are we going to do with the mission we were set out to do? When the mayor learns that it was Chlodomer that kidnapped his daughter, I suspect there will be a battle very soon. And IF we rescue her, and bring her back, I am not very inclined to speak in favor of Chlodomer. If all this offering of virgins is true, he is an evil man. Maybe we should work towards stopping him for good"
Mar 17, 2023 9:44 am
"Hmm." Albert runs Roald's idea through his head. "Maybe we can tell Childebert about the sacrifice? I don't know if he's a very lawful man, but we can say that it's the perfect reason to kick Chlodomer off his 'throne'. He'll probably be all too happy to take that position for himself. And when Chlodomer saves the mayor's daughter he'll be so grateful that it solves the anger towards the baron."

"We could do it on our own as well, but we would risk a fight with more guards than we can handle. Unless we can get the resistance involved."
