Chapter 2: The Wayward Wind

Seally looks at the long hallway to a bridge. "We have a long shot to the bridge, after that, could be close fighting, sword work, or if they have cover, guns. I'll go that way. Life support I don't know."

When Alerio asks about prisoners, she says, "Only if they surrender and its safe to bind them. They're going to kill everyone, we can't let them get a chance to light that fuse."
Apr 11, 2023 7:48 pm
"I don't think any of us should be alone. Let's do this in pairs. I can go with Seally or Fallon. The hallway does look long, maybe too long. "On the other hand maybe we need all the support we can get if we can get past that door into the bridge. Did they say how many are in a team? It's not like we are going to be surprising them."

Zuni takes off his comm device and hands it to Fallon. "You should have this."

"Besides blowing some Sword Worlder away in a bar… any of you been in a firefight?" Alerio asks as warning.

"Back on the squad, we’d split up and breach all the time. But those guys lived this stuff.

Windyridge says:
"Did they say how many are in a team? It's not like we are going to be surprising them."
You quietly contact the bridge crew. They say they aren't 100% sure, but they can confirm least 4 total active shooters split between the two teams.

"Two and two, if we get the drop, then we could manage this. Let's go. Zuni and I will take the bridge, Alerio and Fallon take the guys fucking with life support. Keep in contact, call for backup if you need it, keeping us safe is job one."

"Sounds like a plan. Let's do this." Fallon pulls out her revolver and heads to the life support system on the deck below.
Apr 13, 2023 2:50 pm
Zuni reattaches his comm and then makes his way down the corridor, stopping to hide behind the recessed areas by the passenger quarters. As he gets closer he wonders how they will get through the door. A grenade would do double duty as a distraction and a way in but they didn't have any.

"Hey Seally?" he calls back. Any ideas how to breach the door?"
Apr 13, 2023 5:25 pm
"We just ask the bridge crew to open the outer door when we're ready. That's a great distraction, too. Well done, Zuni!"

Team 1 (Alerio & Fallon)

You take the lift to the cargo hold on deck 1. The doors open up to a full, cavernous hold full of cargo containers of varying sizes. A crewman is lying face down in a pool of blood at the base of a stack of crates, a handgun of some kind still in his hand. In the corner, you see an empty grav loader, an antigrav platform used to move crates and crate stacks.

There's a lot of crates between you and the power plant room where the hijackers likely are hacking the life support systems.

Team 2 (Seally & Zuni)

You make your way up to the hatch that separates the passenger quarters from the crew quarters beyond. The burn marks you saw from the other end of the hallway are from forced entry - looks like the hijackers blew open the access panel and hot wired the lock to release, then wired the lock shut again. The bridge crew tells you they can't access it; the hijackers must have shorted the remote connection.

Team 2 (Zuni & Seally)

Seally draws her sword and activates the electric field. "This thing will cut through armor, so maybe it will slice through a door, even if that's a little slower. I'll try and cut the locks, then we can force our way in."

She examines the doorway and tries to recall how it works so she can open it quickly by disabling the analog of hinges without carving a woman sized hole in it.

"Any idea of where to cut?"
OOC:
Static Blade, AP6.

OOC:
Seally's static blade will definitely be up to the task of cutting through the door to remove the lock. The question is - can she do it quickly and precisely enough to avoid alerting any enemies on the other side that you're about to breach the door? A static blade cutting through metal can make a lot of noise if done sloppily.

Succeeding on a Difficult (10+) Melee (Blade) roll with STR/DEX would indicate you've cut the lock without being detected. Marginal/average failure would still get the locks cut, but you'll have lost the element of surprise. Exceptional failure will also botch the cutting of locks.

You could add an optional Task Chain by attempting a Routine (6+) Mechanics roll with INT/EDU to identifying where the locking mechanisms are on an iris hatch, to be completed by either member of the team. The Effect of this roll would be added to the blade skill check.

Fallon sneaks quietly from crate to crate. She's seen a few spy films in her day, and not to mention that being an investigative journalist sometimes requires a little bit of stealth.
OOC:
But clearly not enough to have any points in it lol.
Apr 14, 2023 2:48 pm
"Me? No, not really but, maybe? Let me take a closer look."
OOC:
Attempting the routine...

Rolls

INT Mechanics and JoAT - (2d6+1)

(35) + 1 = 9

Apr 14, 2023 2:51 pm
With Zuni's help in identifying the lock position, she makes a couple practice swings, tracing where she'll cut, and then attacks the door.

Rolls

Dex 0 + Melee(blades) 1 - (2d6+1)

(51) + 1 = 7

"Have you ever fired that thing?" Alerio whispers, as they make their descent.

When she sees the dead body, she grimaces. But it’s time for business, so she simply stoops and lets the gun from the dead crewman’s hand. She stuffs it into her pocket, just in case she needs a secondary, and then checks the man’s vitals quickly.

She nods to Fallon, and advances as she would if this was a bust. Careful, close and watching the angles.
Apr 15, 2023 8:28 am
"Yes..." she whispers back. "...but I've never hit a target with it."

Team One (Alerio & Fallon)
The two approach the engineering bay under cover of the cargo crates. Alerio notes the heat on the handgun's barrel as she lifts it from the dead crewman, suggesting it was fired.

You manage to reach get within 3 metres of the engineering bay this way, but the remaining distance is unobstructed. Through the bay's tall Alon windows*, you see two shady sophonts in vacc suits at one of several computer consoles. A single locked** door seals the two intruders inside, which is also made of Alon.

You can see the hijackers have wired a device to the engineering console, likely designed to help them break through encryption to access ship systems. The windows give the hijackers a good view of anyone approaching.
* - "Alon," short for aluminum oxynitride, is a transparent ceramic that that behaves like steel. It has an armor value of 5 and would not shatter like a glass window.
** - A red light above the door indicates its locked status.

Team Two (Seally & Zuni)
Zuni accurately estimates where the locking mechanism is, enabling Seally to surgically disable it with her ancestral blade. You take positions to the side of the door for cover, and open the door. On the other side, you see a shorter hallway which ends in the ship's bridge. A blast door has sealed off access, and there are two shady characters in vacc suits working on hot wiring it open, autopistols holstered at their belt. They turn around as they hear the door open, cursing as they desperately draw their guns.
OOC:
You have achieved surprise, so you get DM +6 on your initiative. The hijackers will have DM -6 on initiative and all rolls in the first round. I'll roll initiative to save time and let you get right into the action.

Not surprisingly, Seally and Zuni are up!

Rolls

Seally initiative (+7), Zuni initiative (+7) - (2d6+7, 2d6+7)

2d6+7 : (34) + 7 = 14

2d6+7 : (14) + 7 = 12

Upper Deck hijackers' initiative (+1 - 6) - (2d6-5, 2d6-5)

2d6-5 : (22) - 5 = -1

2d6-5 : (62) - 5 = 3

Apr 16, 2023 2:25 am
Seally informs the bridge crew via comm she's about to breach the outer door. She immediately withdraws the blade from the structure and flings the door open.

She steps inside and to the left, clearing a a line of sight for Zuni and the flechette pistol.

She slides forward (Heron on Wet Ice) and slashes cross-body the thug on the left side.

Rolls

Dex+Blades - (2d6+1)

(15) + 1 = 7

Apr 16, 2023 2:27 am
"Here goes!" Zuni whispers as he rushes in, taking advantage of the door being blown open as a distraction. Finding the nearest hijacker, he aims his flechette and squeezes the trigger.
OOC:
He will aim and move as his minor actions

Rolls

Dex + gun combat untrained (add JoAT) + Aim - (2d6+1+1)

(45) + 2 = 11

Damage Flechette (if successful attack) - (3d6-1)

(656) - 1 = 16

"I have." Alerio responds, badassly.

When they set eyes on their target, she hunches down, ready to outline their plan. She’s aware that they have little time.

"You think they’d come out of there if I gave them something to shoot at? Give you a chance to get behind them."
