Festivities in Sellean [O1.2]

Mar 9, 2023 11:45 pm
Eleven trees grow in a line down the center of Sellean. They are taller and older than any other tree ever found. Some say they are not trees at all but sleeping mystical creatures in tree form. But those who grew up in Sellean know they are trees.

The line runs east to west. To the south of the line, the community built a wide cobblestone courtyard. A library, city hall, and the local market place face the other edges of the courtyard.

Today, as if it were one of the major holidays or celebrations, there are lines of electrical lights, and tables are out filled with food. The accordion and fiddle players are out. It is a festival. The people are in the middle of a party.
A large banner hangs from City Hall

Congratulations Spirit of Leviathan Shipmakers!

It is still early evening when Oril arrives.

Moravil’s feathers gleam and reflect as he banks and makes a grand circular flight around the trees, as if even Moravil must also marvel at the sheer majesty of the plants.

Moravil lands on the North side of the tree line, where there are grasses and rolling hills are used for sports and recreation. Children run about trying to get some kites in the air, a pick-up game of Hillsharrow is just getting going farther out.

The children drop their kites and approach, excited but cautious.

Then Marchal emerges from the crowd, her eyes alight with wonder.

Marchal
"Oril! I can’t . . . . I can’t believe . . . . First Amez and Sons throw a party of appreciation for The Spirit, then they give out bonus checks to all the workers, and now you arrive on a…" (at this point she is at a loss for words). Could this day get any better? "
OOC:
Who is Marchal? What is her relation to Oril?
She smiles and jumps a little as Oril dismounts.
Moravil looks focused and distracted, more like a wild falcon or hawk than the individual from before. As soon as Oril’s feet hit the ground, Moravil bolts to the sky, gives out a shrill, haunting call, and is gone.

"Wow."

What does Oril do?

OOC:
I think Marchal is Oril's best friend since childhood. There's probably been hints of romantic tension at various times as they've matured, but neither have ever made a move because they don't want to ruin the friendship. Marchal is also keen on adventure, but has strong ties to her family in Sellean, so is nervous to leave and lives vicariously through Oril. Oril has always hoped that if he got the opportunity to leave Sellean, Marchal might come with him.
"Farewell Ancient One, I hope our paths cross again," Oril waves to Movaril as the beast returns to the sky.

"Marchal! This is all incredible!" he exclaims as he looks around in amazement at the ongoing festivities. "It's been an unimaginable day for me as well! The ride on the Mystic ... I mean I don't even know how to describe it," Oril begins excitedly, but the wonder slips from his face after a moment and he leans close and whispers, " ... but I also bring terrible news."

Oril pulls Marchal over to a more private corner of the courtyard near the library and tells her the news of the crash not wanting others to hear yet given the celebration.

"I must alert the Mayor's office at once, but can I give you these to keep safe," he hands her his pack of treasure, which includes the mandolin and various valuables that he found on the ship. "I had one of my visions when I came across these ... I think they could be my ticket out of here." It wasn't that he didn't like his home town, but he wanted to see the world and more opportunities for adventure.

He keeps the registration plaque of the airship, which was half scorched during the attack or crash, and a royal crest of Llorinth that he had found in the Prince's room. They would be useful to help prove is story.

"Other than the festivities, has there been any other news since I've been away? Anything I should know before talking with the Mayor?"

As Oril tells his story, he opens one of the bags and reveals the crest to Marchal. There are seven kingdoms in Llorinth, so this is one of the seven royal crests. The intricate detail makes it stand out from that of a lower house. With a dark blue twilight sky as a background, a golden shield stands on a drape of white silk. The shield is emblazoned with a Royal Stellar in flight (OOC: I'm imagining a giant corvid the size an eagle but shape and color like a Stellar's Jay). A garland rests on top of the shield, the shadowy silhouette of its tangled foilage contrasted by a single vibrant bloom, a Midnight Rose matching the color of the majestic bird below. Either side, the shield is guarded by golden beasts-rampant, a stag on the left and a ram on the right. Hovering above is an ermine-lined crown of gold and sapphire.

Marchal takes the mandolin and the pack of treasure and holds them as if on autopilot.
She just stares at Oril for a moment. Her eyes then blink fast several times. She takes a short draw of air. She looks like she is about to argue, to deny what Oril has said. But she knows Oril. Knows Oril wouldn’t lie to her-- about this. It sinks in.

Then she gets that look when she’s mad. Really mad. Like that time when she went too far after the (rival) Kellenheart family accountant who slandered her brother’s integrity and honesty.

Oril can tell she probably didn't even register the question about any news. She's mad and she's about to do something...
OOC:
How much of the vision does Oril tell Marchal? Specifically, does he mention the Dark figure dressed in black that escorted Bedon away? Does he mention that a Knight of Feathers seemed complicit?
[ +- ] World Building Opp
I would think it interesting if people are not so sure about Oril’s visions--is that a theme you’d like to lean into? Would there be any reason for Marchal to be the exception to that, maybe part of why Oril and Marchal are close, perhaps a vision that changed Marchal’s life? If so, feel free to flesh that out if you'd like.
What does Oril do?
OOC:
What Marchal plans to do directly relates to what she knows about that vision. But she is looking for someone or something to blame, her first instinct is to lash out.

I think Oril would have shared the whole story including the visions.

OOC:
Yes, I think this is an interesting angle. I also think it makes sense because it would be a very difficult thing to prove because it isn't visions of the future, it's visions of the past/present, so people often think he must have learned the info some other way. I definitely think Marchal is the exception. I wonder if Oril had a vision about the accountant that he told Marchal, which lead to the incident ... I'm going to let that stew overnight and get back to it tomorrow. I'll also write a response to Marchal's current reaction, I think he'll try to calm her down seeing her quick temper starting to flare.
Apr 26, 2023 5:34 pm
Oril's eyes widen as he notices that look on Marchal's face. It was the same one from the time she had smashed a mug over the head of Azran, the Kellenheart's accountant.
[ +- ] The incident between Marchal and Azran
In hindsight, Oril wonders if telling Marchal was a mistake. He loves sharing his news with her under normal circumstances, especially since she actually takes his visions seriously. But now he's worried about whether she can keep the news to herself. She's not the best at holding in secrets when her famous temper flares.

Oril wraps his arm around her shoulder. "I know Mari," he says using her childhood nickname to try to foster an atmosphere of calm, "it's really upsetting ... and I don't understand what's going on either ... but let's keep this quiet for now until I can let the mayor know. She'll know what to do." He hoped mentioning the Mayor would give her some more reassurance since the woman had been in charge of investigating Azran after their conflict.

"For now, find a safe place for my treasures," he says with a squeeze of her shoulder before heading off to find the mayor.
OOC:
Oril hopes his words help calm Marchal's temper, but he's worried news of the crash will get out before the mayor can plan how to deal with the town's reaction. He's also worried Marchal will lose his newly found treasure in the ensuing chaos, but he needs to risk it. He thinks the Mayor would probably make him turn in his treasures for her investigation.

It's probably a Consort using Charisma to determine the effect of his words on Marchal.

Marchal gathers the mandolin under her arm.
She turns and marches away making no promises. Not saying anything, actually. Just giving Oril a scowl of determination.

The crowds are so happy, the songs so lively by the time Oril makes it to the Mayor’s office, it’s hard to reconcile the wreckage and devastation of his memory with the reality of the moment.

The Mayor’as office is one of the few official buildings not made of silkwood. Built in the architectural style of Micester, a remanent of those who ruled long ago. The purple-black stonework dominates the main street of Sellean.
Even the small trees planted nearby seem to lean away from its walls.

Standing at the main door are two Knights of Feathers.
Oril can immediately tell they know the secret truth about The Spirit.
OOC:
[ +- ] World Building Opp
Both are in full armor and not ceremonial gear-- but working armor. Birds on their shoulders. Blades on their backs, the whole deal.

A young woman, holding several boxes, approaches the door, but they turn her away, saying the Mayor is in an important meeting. Private meeting. No citizens allowed in the halls at this time.

What does Oril do?
OOC:
I’m thinking It is unusual for the Knights of Feathers to play the lowly role of bouncers and guards. They have not noticed Oril yet.
May 12, 2023 7:44 pm
Oril watches Marchal for a few moments as she strides away wondering if his words had their intended affect before taking a deep breath and heading to the Mayor's house.
He notices the Knights have black bands tied around their left biceps holding a raven's feather in place. It's a symbolic gesture within the order usually worn after a tragedy ... Strange choice for a day of celebration, he notes and then realizes, They must know about the crash!

The fact they're turning away visitors worries Oril, but he hopes that his news is topical enough to grant him entry.

Oril nods with understanding when he is greeted with the same message as the previous visitor but replies in a somber tone, "I know, I know, but I must speak with the Mayor at once! I have tidings regarding the ... incident." His eyes fall on the leaders armband momentarily. "I passed by the crash site this morning and I have clues about what happened ...". Oril opens his sack just enough to show the Spirit of Leviathan's registration plaque, its previously pristine metallic sheen now charred and scratched.

The look on the Knights' faces is hard to read. Oril is worried that he revealed too much and they'll just confiscate his evidence and refuse his entry. But the physical clues hardly tell anything on their own, what he saw is much more informative ... not to mention his vision, although he's unsure about whether he'll reveal that even to the Mayor, at least for now.

The knight on the left let his eyes dart around, scanning to see if anyone overheard.
The knight on the right whisks a hand onto Oril’s shoulder and escorts him in.
The bird on her shoulder glares at Oril. A row of bright yellow feathers expands slowly.

In the cool, dim entryway the guards pause. Oril can tell they are puzzling about how someone could get to the town so quickly. The bird takes in a deep breath as if smelling the air.

Then it exhales with a low raspy call that sounds like Movaril.

The brows of both knights furrow, and they look at Oril intently.

But just then a door clicks. The mayor emerges, talking to someone carrying a large picture in an ornate frame. Oril can just make out an oil painting of The Spirit, partially completed. The artist scrambles forward.

The Artist
"I know the emissary and the lead engineer were not there, but if they are not in the painting, the king will . . . "

Then the artist and the mayor turn distracted from their argument regarding a commissioned painting by the bird as it gives a low clicking growl at Oril.

"What a fascinating hue of Citrine in those feathers."

The bird sends a sharp look at the artist and clicks even louder.

What does Oril do?
May 14, 2023 6:19 am
"Madam Mayor," Oril calls out to the tall middle-aged woman. "I have urgent news ..." he pauses to eye the artist and wonders if he might not know about the fortune of The Spirit yet, so only continues with "... that we should discuss privately." He glances to the knights as if for support, so that he doesn't need to reveal the news to this artist.

"Sorry, I wouldn't usually interrupt," he says apologetically to the artist, but is momentarily struck by the image of the ship. To cover his emotional response, he just says, "Wow, that is a masterpiece." Once he has recovered his composure, he's unable to resist his curiosity. He adds in regards to the painting, "Did I hear that its for the King?"
May 14, 2023 6:13 pm
At the word "masterpiece" the artist blushes just a bit, and tries to fight a smile.
The Artist
"Thanks, I wouldn’t say.. I mean it’s not done yet.. But.."
He then points to a section that isn’t finished which contains the ghostly sketches of a few figures.

"It will go to the Kings Emeraldbranch Gallery, that is, if the right people are represented.
But the mayor refuses to see any MCC engineers included..
"

The mayor interrupts.

The Mayor
"We and A&S did all the work. It wouldn’t be right to let them swoop in and take credit…"

She looks at Oril. Her eyes soak in his (probably) pretty grubby, scavenging outfit.

"Do I know you?"

The Artist is about to spy the registration plaque in Oril’s bag.

One of the Knight of Feathers gives an uncertain "um" realizing they are going to need to explain why the let Oril in. The bird violently flaps its wings at Oril. It clicks out "Movaril" one more time. Oril can feel it is sensing Movaril's compulsion upon him, it is just a matter of time before the Knights realize this is a warning.

What does Oril do?
May 14, 2023 7:21 pm
Oril notices the artist's wandering eyes and the bird's warnings, which in and of itself worries Oril.

... How does it know about Movaril? And why does it care? Perhaps there more to my interaction with the Mythic than I realized ...

So he tries to explain quickly, "It's Oril ... uhh, well you might not remember me, but I helped you solve the fraudulent sky-silk case a few years ago, regarding the Kellenheart's accountant, Azran."

As the Mayor looks him up and down he realizes his travel-worn state and explains, "I just returned to town after traveling into the Wastes, so pardon my attire. I haven't had time to clean up because I bring news of what I saw there that I think you should know about immediately."

OOC:

I see many potential ways to engage the mechanic around these speculations.
A test of Attune, to see how these birds the Knights of Feathers keep with them, sense and interpret things.
A test of Study, to recall facts about the interaction of mythic beasts, their ability to ensnare people, and how that works.
A test of Survey, to get read on the situation...

The more concrete the goal and what Oril worries might happen helps me interpret the result.
In terms of tests for information, often the risks are not obvious-- usually, weak hits or misses are just no information-- and I don't push into GM "moves," unless something makes sense in the fiction.

Basically, the risk/reward is your choice, as a player. If Oril pushes things to make a roll, that comes with risks.
The other option is to just roll a Die of Fate for what things Oril remembers/learns-- but that will be less dynamic.

One of the knights wraps an arm around the artist’s shoulder and whisks him away. Before his artistic power of observation could spot the plaque.

The Mayor takes Oril into her office. The other Knight with the bird is suspicious, but the Mayor indicates she doesn’t want him in her office.

As the door closes, Oril enters a long and narrow room. The ceiling reaches at least 20 feet high. She steps behind a tall table, no chairs-- seems she likes to work standing. Books and ledgers are piled everywhere. A small fireplace sits cold and unused. A few small paintings adorn the walls, but the room screams out functionality, not pomp and display. This is her working office, not a place for schmoozing or politicking.

After Oril tells about the Spirit and presents the registration, her shoulders slump.

The Mayor
"Who would…"
She asks herself in a quiet whisper.
"But there were no victims? As best you can tell everyone got out safe?"
OOC:
How much does Oril state about his vision? Is he as forthcoming here as with Marchal?
May 31, 2023 6:04 am
Oril suddenly felt nervous discussing the incident. He had assumed the Mayor knew already based on the Knight's behavior outside. His face grew sad as he remembered the scene on deck ...
Quote:
Oril pulled himself up and over the railing that lined the main deck, which slanted downwards at a steep angle towards the fractured and smashed destruction that was the rest of the ship far below. This section of the ship was still somewhat intact. Leviathan was not a battleship, it was a luxury passenger vessel sponsored by one of the Kings of Llorinth to encourage travel between the Seven Kingdoms and the Quailing Heights, and yet there was evidence of a fight, arrows embedded in the deck, bodies impaled with weapons, scorch marks that Oril couldn't explain, but there was no signs of anyone living.

OOC: From my initial character concept post ... saved under the "Information and Oracles" section of my character sheet"
... he looks back towards the Mayor. "There were definitely victims. They looked like they had died defending the ship. But there weren't enough bodies to account for the entire crew and passengers, so some may have survived, but it wasn't clear where they went. They might have been captured or escaped. I came across Prince Bedon's room. It didn't look like there was a struggle there, so ..." he shrugged his shoulders with hope.

His vision had suggested that the Prince's guardians had advanced notice of the attack and some sort of plan ... perhaps an escape? ... Oril wasn't sure, but they seemed uncertain of their plan and they seemed to be headed for Micester, but Oril held this information back for now. People rarely believed his visions anyways, and he was curious to find out the Mayor's thoughts before revealing more.
[ +- ] Oril's Vision for reference
OOC:
Oril will keep the vision to himself for now.

Also, he hasn't mentioned the crystal ship yet, which he saw as he exited Leviathan the first time, before meeting Movaril.
Jun 3, 2023 5:25 pm
With the confirmation of victims, the mayor’s eyes dart to the door. It feels to Oril for a moment that she wants to storm out there and ask the Knight of Feathers some questions, but she doesn’t move.

The Mayor
"Thank you for bringing this to my attention." She says through a tight jaw.

And then it is all business.

"I will need to organize a recovery operation." She whispers to herself.

She pulls out a map and points, "By your description is it here." She points almost exactly where the ship crashed. "Without knowing what brought it down, I’d hate to send The Elmheart out…."
OOC:
[ +- ] World Building Opp

"That means going by ground."

She looks up to Oril. "I will go make an announcement soon. If I have other questions, where can I find you?"

She looks angry, but she fights to make sure Oril knows it is not meant for him.

What does Oril do?
Jun 7, 2023 6:56 am
Oril is suddenly reminded of the other oddity that he noticed in the sky earlier this morning. "Yes, be wary of sending any other ships. I saw a strange crystal vessel after finding Leviathan ... it was far off on the horizon, flying towards Giacinto. I don't know if it was involved, but seems likely. Have you ever heard of a crystal airship?" Oril asks the Mayor knowing only of the wooden variety built here in Sellean, which require a significant amount of silkwood to generate upward lift. Oril didn't really understand the physics of it but he know it was some interaction between the wood and the woven silk sails.
Jun 7, 2023 10:15 pm
The mayor looks at Oril unblinking. After a long beat, she realizes she’s been asked a question.
The Mayor
"I have heard some things about ship design, and there has been ideas of using crystals as armor and for evasion manoeuvre."
OOC:
Oril doesn’t strike me as particularly skilled in reading the lies of crafty politicians. It is your call if Oril can tell (or even have a chance to tell) she is totally bluffing, and that the mention of a crystal ship has her a bit terrified. Her instinct is to bloviate when uncertain. Oril can try to read her if you’d like.
"But, maybe not tell that to anyone else? Until I can find out more."

She reaches for a small bell. Likely to summon a secretary or aid.

"Anything else?"
