A Collection of Strangers on Walkabout

Mar 24, 2023 2:40 am
The wilds have proved a challenge to Khaguran's wits' wisdom, skills, and body. While out on one of his frequent treks exploring lands beyond the civilized domains he cam across a trail that though new had been used multiple times. A new road meant new places and repeated use indicated that someone thought there was something werth all the effort there.

Intrigued Khaguran stopped by a local farmhouse and stocked up as well he could for an extendedn journey. The farmer seemed obivious to the new road, indicating it had be laid in such a way as to not catch the eye of the locals it bypassed. Thanking the farmer and his extended family that housed him and sold him the goods he would need he set out.

The trail followed the terrain and the ruts in the dirt indicated to Khaguran that the wagons were heavily laden. unfortunatly the raod did not seek out fresh water as often ans the meager waterskin Khaguran had required from him. This forced his to divert off the road to quench his thirst and fill the water skin. However this also exposed that the wagon often had to divert around terrain that Khaguran could easiy cross. Soon it was a challange. Could he catch up to the last set of wagons that he estimated were less than a tenday week ahead of him before they reached their destination? The hunt was on.
OOC:
@Rizado96 go ahead and give me your first post for Khaguran. Let me konw if you have any questions but keep the ooc in active story thread to story content. Other questions can be put in the TinyChat Q&A or your personal thread.
Mar 24, 2023 9:21 pm
I'll leave the wagon trail and try to find a high vantage point. It may be I can cut cross-country and rejoin the road further on--hopefully closer to the wagon train.
OOC:
Does the landscape provide any good places to spy out the land in this way? Or is the trail too well-hidden to plot out a good intercept course?
Mar 24, 2023 9:34 pm
Now over a day outfrom the nearest setlement the road seems to only wander to avoid rough terrain that the wagons might not be able to handle. While close to the setlements it simpe swing wid eso that normal activity would not nead someone to cross it.

Khaguran looks around the rolling hills partially covered by thick trees with the ocasional rocky outcropping. Typical for this region ht must have made creating the initial road difficult. Khaguran picks a taller than average hill with a rocky peak not too far off from the wagon track and set off to survey the area.
OOC:
Give me a wildernes ssurvival test (3d6)
The beasts of the woods have been showing signs of a lack of contact with civlization. Less afraid though no less cautions Khaguran has had to avoid a few of the more dangerous animals. The brown bear was easy enough but the wolf pack that haunted his camp last night made his rest a bit less than relaxing. He has also spotted signs of mor monstrous creatures but luckily has avoided and close encounters with these.

If this is something you would be interested in doing then you can read up on the Reference \ Setting thread and ask questions about the game setting
As Khaguran climbs the chosen hill he begins to suspect that he is not the first to recognize it potential. As he nears the rocky peak there are definite signs of inhabitation by some form of monster or beast of size and power.
OOC:
Do you want to
1. sneak up for a quick peak at the area
2. sneak back down the way you cam up
3. circle aroud the rocky area and continue on your way
4. look for clues on what might live here
5. other ????

As you climb up the rocky formation atop the hill you take care to minimize your pressence and maintain a watchful attitude. This however does not prove to be enough.

Raising his head over the lip of a ledge he was pulling himself up onto he finds himself face to face with a griffin. the eale head atop the lion body seems unafraid and stares intelligently at the tile humanoind who has traipsed to casually into its home. A soft squak is followed by a low rumbling chuff of warning as the two massive wings half open as it rolls to its feet to stare down at you The griffin has to be as large as a horse but with a large and obviously sharp beak, not to mention the sharp claws that are slowly extending from its paws as it half croutches to leap or take flight.

Blinking Khaguran pulls him from his daze realizing he has been staring into the eyes of a monster that would barely concider him a snack. Khaguran knows all to well that most beast, and moster for that matter, consider direct eye contact a challange. In essence Khaguran came into the griffins home and proceded to challenge it!

Khaguran quickly drops down from the ledge, glad he had not gotten an arm or leg up, and began scrambling down the rocks as quickly as he could a squawk and the sound of wing above him alerted him to pursuit. turning to look back he saw the griffin's talons heading strait for his face. Then he tripped.
The tallong sailed directly over his face as he fell backwards and the feeling of relieve and the joy of life quickly vanished as the back of his head slammed into a rock. Turning ovr quickly Khaguran focussed his attention on getting to the tree cover as quickly as possible. Learning from his previous incident he started dodging around and under larger roks, using his smaller size to his advantage. Finally down from the rocky peak of the hill he only had to cross a small clearing before he could make the treeline. Trying to time it he makes a dash for the trees but the griffins's dive was quicker than he expected and he heard the thunderous sound as the wings snap open and the foreleg talons grabbed at his back.
An impact followed by a tug towards the sky fills him with dread. But he sound of something tearing let him know he only needs to worry about patching up his sleeping rolls. Under the trees and further into the woods in a flash Khaguran finally takes a moment to look around. Yes it is as he assumed.. He has no idea where he is not with relation to the wagon trail or where he ascended the hill.

Ok, in case it has not become self evident at this point. I allow character to encounter threats that exceeds their current abilities. It is rare and will come with warnings and chances to avoid it as happened here. So if you see a large dark cave and hear long loud breathing chances are there will be something big in there.

OOC:
So did I previously have an idea of the general cardinal direction the wagon train was heading? If I'm lost in relation to the trail, maybe I could still use the position of the sun to start heading, say, North if I think they were going that way.

Also, what do I see around me? Anything of note other than trees in all directions?

The wagon trail was heading east and tending a bit to the south. You are currently north of the track so heading south should let you cross it at some point unless it has turned southe sharper than it has before. There has been a large stream or small river wandering the land south of the trail. The stream meanders arosss the land and the wagon trail cuts a more direct path, for the most part. You cossed to the north due to this nice looking hill but failed to get a good enough look at the surrounding horizon to save your legs from unneeded walking.
Getting your bearing Khaguran sighs and sets of heading south. As he moves in and out of the trees he spots a few landmaarks that might be sightings he set befor ascending the hill. A couple of hours bring ou to the trail which has turned south to cut through some low hills. With night coming on you start looking for a place to rest for the night.

Sure, I think I'll just look for a semi-sheltered place not far off the path to make camp. Maybe if there's an overhang in a dell or hollow? When I'm settled in, I'll try to make a fire and bed down for the night, lamenting my torn bedroll.

In the morning, my plans are to fill up my waterskin and magic jar at the stream, as well as sample the wet clay of the bank to see if it might have any desirable properties for making pottery in the future. After that, I'll continue south on the wagon track.

Khaguran moves to intercept the road as well as stays on the lookout for water. It takes longer than expected to find both the road and water forcing Khaguran to make do with a thicket with decent foliage to cut the wind and other weather as his bower for the night. Digging a small hole he sets a small fire to heat some water into a nice tea to add some flavor to his routine.

I the morning with a full water skin and jar he set out staying between the wagon trail and growing stream. The stream has merged with a coupe tributaries by mid day and is getting decent sized. Climbing sparsely wooded hill gives him a decent vantage of the way to the south, where the trail and stream are heading No too far away the stream joins up with an even larger flow coming from the west. By late afternoon he has repeatedly bumped into the wagon trail, even following it for much of the time and he begins to suspect something. An hour before nightfall his suspicions are confirmed. The wagon trail cuts directly across the now wide, though not too deep stream.

Khaguran decides to wade across as the flow is not too fast and there are not enough rocks anywhere he has passed to allow him to cross without getting wet. Soaked and slightly chilled he scampers up the far bank and looks out over an increasingly wooded and stream ridden area. Setting about looking for decent quart3er where he can dry out his clothes he is pleasantly suppressed when he spots the ruins of a small tower.

The tower is a bit out of the way from the wagon track but the 1st floor looks intact with a portion of the 2nd as well. Collecting some kindling and any dry wood he can find he set off for the tower after noting where he can rejoin the wagon trail in the morning. By time he gets to the clearing the tower stands it the sun is low making the interior of the building dark and slightly less welcoming than it appeared when first sighted.

I decide this is as much shelter as I'm likely to find before sundown. I approach the tower and survey its entrance(s) with the intent to enter as long as there are no obvious signs of danger. I wonder if I recognize by its construction, or maybe by any furnishings or decoration on the first floor interior, who built this place and how long it's been in disrepair.

Aproaching cautiously you can tell by the fading light of sunset that the tower is quite old and obviously part of the Dawn Age and likely used during the Dawn War. Toweres like thiw were established to look out over rural areas or around larger cities. The landscape was severly altered during the shattering so the tower may have movd at that time or the lands simply altreed and the people fled.

Aproaching the door you seee a few light booted foot prints, a couple of days old. These were perhaps from wagon train outriders though you can not be sure. At the doorway you survey the inside which is fovered in dust thick enough to indicate that whomever was walking around before you did not enter. The interior is dim but look solid and dry. There are signs that there was once furniture but the remnants are so rotten they have colapsed to litle more than mounds under the dust.

Steping forward to clear the dust before setling down for the night you are suddenly hit with a wave of nausea. Roll a save test please (2d6) The scene before you twists as you pass the doorway and the interior is neat, clean, and furnished. The previously broken stairs now are whole and continue up to the higher floors of the tower. Whirling you now see the slight shimmer in the air that denotes a border.

Borders are the result of the Shattering. The world was broken and rearanged. The Border are the boundaries between the broken pieces of the Mortal Realm. Many of the borders have healed while other are still easily notice and strong enough to make those who cross them ill and confused. As the strength of the Bordrs fade they become static and easily crossed. However in the years following the Shattering all Borders changed randomly or periodically so that crossing one would lead to different landds. Khaguran has passed throu a couple of weaker Borders that were explored and has had to cross two while following the wagon trail. Bothe were easily spotted and very stable. This one is much stronger in its affect and much harder to see. The view beyond the border that fills the doorway is not the landscape that Khaguran just came from.

Khaguran reals under the sudden wave of nausea as the magical energies of the Border play havoc with his thoughts and senses. He collapses to the ground trying valiantly not to end up in a puddle of any sort of body fluids. As the pain subsides and he becomes increasingly aware of his surroundings again he takes stoke of things.

Other than the doorway and stairs there is a simple chest, table and two chairs. Outside the door is no longer the wooded hills he just came from but a distorted image of grey misty covered hills barely discernable through the now obvious and clearly dangerous Border. According to what Khaguran knows Border that are this strong can be dangerous but there are methods to cross them safely with careful observation and timing. Now is not a good time. He can try and leave now or watch and wait for a better time to leave. One other thing known about Borders is that repeated crossings will make individuals more resistant to their adverse affects but doing so while still suffering only compounds the suffering so he decides he had better wait at least until the headache dissipates.

Since he has time Khaguran heads to the stairs as he hears a sound coming from behind himself. Turning around he sees a human step, grimacing from the affects of the Border . . .
OOC:
@Rizado96 / Khaguran, say hello to @daryen / Skeve
Skeve had been watching the Duede (halfling/hobbit/goblin) for a few minutes before the figure entered the tower ruins. Skeve had come across the wagon trail earlier that day and though it was obviously not used often it had been used recently. Having wandered the Shattered lands for a while Skeve had lost track of the closest settlements due some unfortunate shifts in the Borders. As Skeve watched the Duende approach and enter the tower obviously preparing to settle down for the night he decides this looks to be a good opportunity to introduce himself.

As Skeve approaches the tower his magical senses give warning that the tower is within an oddly small border. Having watched the Duende enter the tower only a minute ago but not seeing him withing Skeve is certain this Border is not only odd in its size but nature as well. Taking a breath his steps through the doorway.

To Kharguran the newcomer seems to not suffer nearly as bad as he had.
To Skeeve this crossing seems worse, and affects him more that one has in quite some time.

As Skeeve stumbles and falls to his knees he look up at Kharguran with a faint smile and hold a hand out to wait a moment and allow him to collect himself.
Apr 2, 2023 1:47 am
Once he gains his breath, Skeeve states, "Hello friend. I've hit enough of these Borders that I have lost my bearings. I saw you and hoped you know where the next settlement is."

Khaguran is a small, sallow-skinned fella with a wiry build and sharp features. He's dressed in simple homespun clothes and a travel-stained cloak.

"Howdy, traveler. You're not kidding, I can't remember the last time a crossing was that bad. I'm afraid I can't say how far we are from any kind of civilization. These parts are unfamiliar. I've been tracking a wagon train on the track nearby for some days and haven't passed through any proper towns--just the odd homestead or two."
OOC:
Good to be adventuring with you, @daryen .

OOC:
Oh! Right! Forgot Skeeve's description.
Skeeve is of medium size for a human (about 5'10") and of medium build. He has fair skin and average looks, with brown hair. The one unusual aspect are his deep green irises, the permanent visual markers of his time with the fey. He is also dressed in simple drab brown clothes with a well-worn hooded cloak. Over the cloak is his simple backpack containing and carrying his equipment.

"Well, since we both need to wait for a bit before we should cross again, do you want to check this space out?"
OOC:
Good to adventure with you, too. Thank you for allowing me to join you on your walkabout!

LOL, I love the lego avatar.
Other than the chairs and basic table the first floor holds little of interest except the chest. The stone stairs now lead up to the 2nd floor. Cautiously opening the chest shows it to contain a small writing kit with paper, ink, and a pen, along with a jug, a couple of cups, flint and steel,, tinder for a fire, and a set of keys. A small stone fireplace sits empty under the stairs and though backend from previous fires is clean of any debris at this time.
Apr 3, 2023 2:04 pm
Skeeve says, "I suggest grabbing the keys and checking out upstairs. That sound like a plan?"
OOC:
Thank you!
As an aside, is it safe to assume the flint and steel are irrelevant to anyone with Spell-Touched? I figure making a spark with magic shouldn't be a big deal. So lighting a camp or cooking fire, or lighting a torch or lamp should just be a thought.

Spell touched use magic for simple tasks including lighting fires. However there are rare zones of chaos and null that make magic hard to control or impossible to use. But they are rare. Most spell touched learn to do mundane tasks as a backup.
Apr 4, 2023 1:51 am
"Took the words out of my mouth."

I'll ready a stone in my sling on the off chance there's anything hostile lodging in the top of the tower, then proceed up the stairs. I don't mind to take point unless Skeve has a particular desire to.
Apr 4, 2023 2:05 am
Skeeve is perfectly fine with Khaguran leading up the stairs. He follows closely behind.
Apr 4, 2023 2:55 am
As you ascend the stairs you note that there appears to be daylight coming from somewhere above. The bright yellow light of daylight fills the second story forcing you to blink as your head pass the 2nd story floor. Three window open and one of them is letting in the morning light. Another shows full day while the last has the dull reds of a setting sun. The stairs continue up on the far side of the room which has a simple table with 3 stools. Atop the table rest a spyglass, paper, and more writing implements. However the ink has been knocked over and has soaked into the pages. On the section of the tower without the stairs up or down is a cabinet Several doors to the cabinet are open and other shelves are open, all of which are empty. There is however a lock securing a larger door on the cabinet.
Apr 4, 2023 1:34 pm
Skeeve will try the keys he grabbed downstairs to open the locked cabinet door.

(If he didn't grab it, then he'll go back down to get them and come back up.)

Skeeve will also be distracted by the three windows. They all show completely different times. He wants to see if they also show different locations.
Apr 4, 2023 4:49 pm
The key ring has four very distinct keys and you easily identify the key and unlock the cabinet. Inside you see 4 crossbows and a dirty dagger. One of the crossbows has no bow string and is set by itself to one side with the dagger.

Looking out the windows you see that the scene out the window at dusk appears to be where you came from with low rolling hills covered by heavily wooded forests. The other two windows show similar settings but the hills in the dawn scene are larger with smaller trees while the window showing mid day has hills about in between the dawn and dusk scenes and the trees are starting to fill in.
Apr 5, 2023 8:53 pm
Even with all that he has seen in his short life, he is amazed by the view of the three windows! "Wow! We are looking out at the same area that are in three very different times! We probably need to remember to look out the door to make sure we are going to our correct time before we blindly rush out."

Assuming there is nothing else to look at on this floor, Skeeve says, "Ready to go up to the next floor and see what its windows show?"

Skeeve isn't worried about the items right now. He figures they will have to come back down before they can leave. Might as well see what all is here before trying to figure out what to swipe.
Apr 6, 2023 3:17 am
"That's a good note; I don't suppose it will help my chances of catching up to the wagon train if we go waltzing into the distant past.

Before we continue, just to satisfy my own curiosity..."

Khaguran examines a few of the items in the room:

The dagger. Is it just rusty, or soiled with something? And if there's some substance on it, how fresh does it seem?

The paper. Is there any discernable writing at all, or has the ink completely covered the pages?

The spyglass. Khaguran picks it up, examines its construction, and then looks through it out of each of the three windows in turn.

The dagger sheath is covered in oil and the handle is slightly tacky. Taking it out the bladed drops oil. Continuously. It seems to be generating it slowly.
The paper had long since absorbed the ink which had dried and there are no traces of writing to be found.
The spyglass is of good quality and made of brass. The view with the spyglass reveals details that you missed before. The scenes seem to flicker. What you took for wind moving the trees turns to be the trees growing and withering in an oddly disappointed and possibly cyclical manner. Watching to closely behind to give you a headache.
Apr 6, 2023 1:11 pm
When the effects of the looking glass are mentioned, Skeeve will also take a look. He hands the brass glass back and says, "We probably ought to hold onto this!"

With the dagger, spyglass, and keys in hand you hear upstairs again. The third floor has 3 old and crumbling beds with small open top boxes underneath, small windows between them, and a ladder to a trap door on the ceiling. The storage under each bed holds a mismatch of ruined articles. The only thinks identifiable are a set of gaming bones (think very rough dice) and a few small and rusted metal items. Candle holder, Flint and steel, needles, a couple of tins that holds some sort of salve or powder.

The four windows show similar scenes though slightly different than the second floor. Finding nothing of interest you climb the ladder and carefully open the trap door by releasing the latch and shoving it up.

The area above the tower forms an odd done as the space just beyond is trusted and warped. With a pandemic view you more see the surrounding in a click like fashion. Standing in the middle and slowly turning your can chicken through a day outside the tower, dawn, morning, noon, afternoon, evening, sunset, and night before returning to dawn.
Apr 7, 2023 1:56 am
OOC:
When we first looked at the weird view for the first time it looked like we could see views from different time periods. Does that effect still work here? Also, when we looked on the second floor things seemed to go backwards in time. Is that effect still here? And with the panoramic view, can we twisted it around and look forward in time?
Skeeve will take some time to experiment with the panoramic view to see if they can gain any additional information. He will also suggest that Khaguran try to use the spyglass and time effects to see if he can find his caravan.
Apr 7, 2023 3:29 am
I definitely take a few minutes to survey the full landscape with the spyglass, taking special care to look out for signs of the caravan like Skeeve suggests. Also, I think I'd like to have put the oily dagger inside my Earthen Everfast Jar, if that's cool.
Apr 7, 2023 12:50 pm
The dagger barely fits inside the earthen jar.
Dagger detai for refference so I dont forget to tell you later. You will have full use of it after leaving the tower. For now it jsut makes thing oily and dirty
[ +- ] Decorative Dagger of Grease Stain
The view up here is as below only you now have the full effect. One day of light is one full rotation as you pann around the tower. As you look more closely with and without the spyglass you realize that the view around you in each direction seems to be a set time of day a fixed period in time. The closer the daylight is to what you entered the closer the scenery looks to be like what you saw when you enterd. As a rough outlike if you entered at 7PM then 7AM seems the least like the view when you entered with the angles in between shifting in both daytime and history. As you look more closely you note that there is an extreeme distortion at one particular spot near the dawn light (7AM) where the flickering distortions are greatest. The spyglass is revealed to be nothing special other than being able to reveal details from a great distance. (telescope) and the odd visual effects are likely an effect of the the Border the tower is surronded by.

As you examine the scenery you both hear a sound from below of someone closing the cabinet door.
Apr 7, 2023 2:55 pm
I assume both of us look at each other in surprise for a moment. Skeeve then motions for Khaguran to quietly move to a spot unlikely for someone coming up the stairs in the trap door to see. Skeeve moves to a spot most likely to be seen by someone coming up the stairs.
OOC:
The base idea is that Skeeve will try to charm-talk whomever pops up from the stairs. If that goes well, great. If not, then Khaguran should have the drop on the whomever it is. Skeeve intentionally remains unarmed to help with the parley, figuring a magic bolt will work well enough here.
Apr 7, 2023 3:54 pm
Looking down the iron ladder into the next level you hear a few footsteps and muttering and then s figure walls into view shifting a stack of papers. Odd thing is, he and the papers are translucent.

The trap door is on the middle of the tower and a couple of iron poles with rungs between them grant access to the top through the door which is still open

Khaguran positions himself so that he'd be behind anyone coming up the ladder into the observatory dome.

"Seems like someone's home," He whispers to Skeeve.

He then moves back against the wall and crouches to listen for a moment, to see if any of the specter's words are intelligible.

As you watch for a moment you suddenly hear and feel a world shaking sound as the sky around you begins to tear itself apart. Black lightning flashes across the sky. Your ears are filled with screams from where you know not. And the tower itself shakes you both off of your feet. While this is going up you see the phantom rush up the ladder with the spyglass, or a phantom version of it. Acting as if you are not there the scans the horizon with and without the spyglass before pulling out an amulet and talking into it. Though you are unable to understand any of his words due to the odd screaming you see him call down into the tower. Then as is caught up by some invisible hands your perspective shifts and your view shifts to looking out over the tower parapet and then down to the door. You see two other men mush out of the tower. Just as they do the tower itself is struck by the black lightning and the two men are wiped form existence as the strange grey mist that blocked the door after you entered now surrounds the tower.
You are dropped back to the tower floor and the world returns to normal. Standing before you, with tears streaming down his face, shoulders slumped and a pitiful expression the ghost stares at you.
Ghost Guard
If you leave now, you too shall die. Don't leave now. Just stay and talk. Just for a bit. I have been so lonely.
Apr 8, 2023 9:28 pm
OOC:
Gotta say that was unexpected. So, just to be clear here, this is a simplified version of what happens:
1) We are on the top of the tower when this starts.
2) The black lightning and screaming starts and the phantom joins us while ignoring us.
3) We are grabbed by invisible hands and shown two men leave the tower and die for their efforts.
4) We are now on the base floor of the tower the phantom is bawling and talking to us.
If that's all correct, my question is, were "the two men" us? I assume not, but have to ask.
Skeeve asks the phantom, "Were you one of the two killed by leaving?"

No. I am the fool who told them to run for it and watched them for as I was trapped in here during whatever that was. It took years for whatever is around the tower to settle down. But by then I was dead. I don't know when I became a ghost but it has been some time. Time is odd here in the tower now.

I am unsure. The Shattering? What is that?
I do not know how long i have been dead. I know others have come here to the Tower but not many and some would not listen to me and died. I think one of them may have said something of the Shattering. My mind is not always clear. Sometimes my grief fills me and i lose myself.
I feel clear of thought now. May i ask a favor of you?

Thank you for hearing my tale.
The ghostly figure looks around and finding what he was looking for walls over to the edge of the tower and peers over the edge. As his head extends being the parapet it is distorted in a very disconcerting way. Nodding he waves you over. Pointing to a tree on a nearby hill.
Align yourself between the door and that tree. When the time comes I will need you to jump off the tower.

I figure the spell-touched can cause 1 damage or reduce 1 damage. so you can reduce the effects of a fall but not eliminate it.
Ghost Guard
The guard chuckles Oh you will most definitely fall but it is the only way.

There was an unfortunate incident shortly after I was trapped here. A young lady somehow gained entrance to the tower. The door proved to dangerous to leave by and things were not looking good. Luckily she was a wizards apprentice and devised a plan to leave by using one of her masters spells. For whatever reason the distortion around the tower is strongest at ground level so she devised a plan to leave from the top. The spell she use has protected her but unfortunately it was not enough to pass through the barrier and she has been trapped in time.

The trouble arises from the increasingly violent distortions as you approach the base of the tower. This will have the added effect of slowing your decent. If you attempt to leave the confines of the towers protections anywhere but that you will suffer. Also if you go slowly, for example by climbing down a rope you will actually suffer more intensely. You may test this as you wish but must warn you. Find the time closest to when you entered to tower to test with. I would suggest something edible be tested with. Drop one sample and lower another on some string if you have some.

The ghost shrugs at this point
I am unfortunately unable to leave the tower so if I am to help the girl I will require the add of a mortal to brave the dangers.

When your time aligns with the girls you will need to go and fetch her. I have
magical crossbow in that shoots ropes and causes them to secure themselves to a fixed target. If one of you jumps down with the bow, grabs the girl and uses the bow to return to the top quick enough you may all leave tomorrow evening with the young lady.

Ok, let me see if I am following this: we need to leave as close to the same time as when we got here. So, evening. However, before then we need to jump out, grab a girl, the somehow get back up here. And presumably the girl's time will be before our time? Is that all correct?

And, yes, I know the girl is a new PC. I saw that elsewhere. :)
Skeeve says, "Show me the crossbow and I will get her."
OOC:
One more question. Typically for a ghost to have an item, they need the physical item to be nearby. So, if we took the cool crossbow and spyglass, the ghost would lose his ghostly versions. Is that the case here? I ask because the spyglass and crossbow are pretty cool, but I don't want to steal from someone who actually is using them. Or is that not a concern?

The ghost guides you to the cabinet and shows you the crossbow and a coil of rope he in a drawer.
We have some time before it will be time to save the girl. You can rest if you wish. He explains what he knows of the distortion, you know to be an oddly small and localized Border, and after some experimentation you are confident in what he says about jumping off the cliff. Getting back up quickly will be a problem as the longer the rope is exposed to the Border the more damage it will suffer.

@Rizado96,@daryen welcome @Matchacha to the story. When your characters meet please give a simple description of your character
Khaguran and Skeeve relax in the tower until the time approaches to rescue the girl. Let me know what the plan is.

Rikia has "just" jumped off the tower, a frightening experience, and been stuck at the base of the tower unable to leave. She can tell her warding spell is failing and the area she can wander had been reduced to a small area as the warding spell fails and is almost completely gone.
Apr 10, 2023 3:33 pm
The plan is pretty simple: I jump off with the crossbow and rope, collect the girl, shoot the crossbow at the top of the tower and start climbing. If I miss high, Khaguran will need to grab the rope and tie it off. I will use focus for both the jump and the shot. I will use Spell-touched to slow my descent at the end. The rope and crossbow are prepared prior to the jump.

Quick question for the phantom: how big is she?

OOC:
While waiting for answers, Skeeve asks about alternative plans. I assume all of this planning happens during the rest, not when we're supposed to do things.
Some additional questions for the phantom:
1) This is a magic crossbow. Does the bolt care about weight? I mean instead of shooting the bolt/rope, then climbing, could we instead just tie ourselves off, then fire the bolt/rope and just let it pull us along? I wouldn't ask this question, except for the "magic" part.
2) Alternative plan: Tie one end of the rope to my Stick and the other end of the rope to Khaguran. I wedge the Stick on the parapet and Khaguran jumps, they grab each other, and I pull them up from there. Assuming they both weigh less than me, then this would actually be easier, faster, and not require as much uncertainty. And the rope might not be exposed for any longer, as I can just start pulling and I should be able to pull faster than either she or I can climb unassisted.

Hello, I'm excited to be part of this game. In this moment RP wise girl is fine because she is 5' and you are looking down at her from the top of a tower. But she's of age (Still haven't picked a specific age yet) so lady, woman, something of those lines is fine but eventually we'll all introduce ourselves so it'll be Rikia. :D
Rikia is a human woman wearing a simple dark brown hooded cloak. She's 5’, has tan skin, short (chin length) brown hair, and glassy periwinkle eyes. At the moment she is calling for her master her voice getting raw.

Zastan! Zastan! No... NO! Don't leave me like this. I don't want to be alone again. I can't...

The problem is the temporal differential. You will only have a few rounds or about 15 seconds to act topside but whoever is at grind level only has 1 round, 2 actions, before they are out of sync again for another day
Rikia essentially had had 6 seconds of time for each day of time for the last 50 years so had been trapped for about a day her time
OOC:
revised earlier pay about Rikia being trapped to reflect being the about a day
Apr 10, 2023 7:55 pm
OK, how about combining the two tactics:
- Skeeve makes the stick long so it will get stuck in the parapet.
- Skeeve jumps down to Rikia (I'm just gonna use that preemptively).
- Skeeve then shoots the rope at Khaguran. (The theory: Khaguran is willing, so it should automatically hit. I'm trying to avoid a dice roll.)
- Skeeve and Rikia then start climbing up the rope to get out of there. Khaguran, if he's strong enough, can pull at the rope, too, to pull us while we climb up.
OOC:
To be clear, Skeeve is talking about these plans to the Khaguran and the phantom. That's why I am not making the OOC.
If we could communicate with Rikia, I'd just shoot her from here! :)
Apr 10, 2023 8:11 pm
No. Changing my mind again. This is the plan I now recommend.
- Skeeve makes the stick long so it hooks the trap door and wraps his arm.
- Khaguran ties one end of the rope to himself.
- Khaguran makes the jump down to Rikia (said even though we don't know her name yet).
- Khaguran then shoots the crossbow rope at Skeeve, who is a willing target. (So it's hopefully an auto-hit.)
- Khaguran and Rikia grab at other and hold on tight.
- Skeeve then forces the stick to contract as quickly as possible, pulling them up as quickly as he can. I figure him being a full sized human, the combined weight of Khaguran and Rikia should be low enough to allow him to pull them both up quickly. If necessary, he will then jump down the trap door to finish the retrieval.

This is all assuming Khaguran is willing to make the jump.

But, since we have so little time, there is no time for whomever jumps and Rikia to climb. They must be pulled out extremely quickly.

Along that line, are there any heavy objects we can use to help with the pulling them up?
Apr 11, 2023 1:26 am
OOC:
@Rizado96 and additions or alterations for Khaguran?
Apr 11, 2023 2:59 am
"Okay, I think I'm following, and it seems like a good plan. I'm willing to take the plunge; having the two lightest people down there seems smart, assuming our combined weight isn't too heavy to pull up effectively."

So my one round of actions will be to grab Rikia, then shoot the crossbow rope at Skeve. I might suggest, Skeeve could even jump down through the trapdoor as soon as the rope harnesses itself to him. He might act like a counterweight and yank us up several feet at once as he falls. Depending on whether the staircase down to the next (2nd?) floor is enclosed or built into the side of the tower wall and thus open to the air, you could even go to the top step and jump down to the floor again for another free several feet without having to manually pull us.

I can see how that might be a little tenuous though. Our esteemed DM can advise if that seems farfetched given the circumstance.

I thought this one was pretty cool though, and had the right vibe if not the physiology I was imagining at first.

I had really wanted to be the one who jumped, so I could say, "Come with me if you want to not die." But, alas, Skeeve is needed for his weight.
Quote:

That would have been ideal, but I have to be right on the edge for you to shoot me, and the trap door is in the middle. So, I still have to get from the edge to the middle before I can plunge down the trap door. My understanding is that all the other staircases are purely internal. So I have to be on the roof

Also, I recommend shooting me first, then grabbing her. I'll wait a beat before running.

Good plan and we can do your idea if you want the dramatics.
I am suggesting an alternative just to simplify it since you already came up with a good solution.
Ghost Guard
As he listens to your plan he commends you on your bravery and clever plan but makes a suggestion. Actually if you time it right one of you can shoot the girl. The other end of the rope can be tied around the other at the trap door who then jumps down to the second floor and you both pull her up. This would require convincing her quickly you are trying to help.

With the tower being 35 feet tall, from base to parapet with 10 feet per floor, and assuming 4 feet to tie off each end you can barely grab Rikia and have the other end secured to Skeeve at the trap door. Dropping to the 3rd floor will hoise Rikia up 10 feet quickly and then you will have to haul her up the rest of the way.
Apr 11, 2023 8:12 pm
OOC:
We can just shoot her with the rope and it can work because she is a PC. However, there is no way it would work without her being a PC. We have six seconds (or so). She is scared and confused. She doesn't understand what is going on. She saw the tower collapse, then she couldn't make it when she saw it was still standing. She just lost her wizard mentor. Now, she might (or might not) see us screaming at her, then raise a crossbow and shooting it at her. Just human reflex will cause her to resist the one shot we get.

So ... if you don't mind some meta-gaming, I am more than willing to just shoot her from the tower. But it can only work because she is a PC.

Also, Skeeve was planning to jump through the trapdoor, and then keep on going down the stairs.

I'll roll to see if she heard Khaguran's call. If she did she has braced herself and ready to help climb up and not get hurt. If not she is caught unaware, gets injured as she is pulled up the tower and probably a bit peeve at what she assumes are attackers.

I'm thinking Survivalist would apply here for advantage cause she would still be keeping her head about her for predators/enemies.

Rikia turns and faces the tower as a rope launches out and wraps around her body. As her body is lifted up and towards the tower she braces her legs against the tower to avoid slamming into it and continues climbing up and over the parapet.

How about this? I assume everyone fails their roll for comedic effect. Depending on the need, everyone could have a point of damage because of the various assumed failed rolls. Please feel to ignore parts of this, or even discard the entire thing. I was just having some fun with it.
Skeeve has tied the rope securely around his waist, and awaits the signal from Khaguran.

From his perch, Khaguran yells down to the now-materialized figure, "Don't move! I am magically sending a rope down to pull you out!" Startled, Rikia freezes as instructed. Khaguran fires the rope with the crossbow at her and it quickly binds her, temporarily pulling the rope taunt. Khaguran yells, "The rope got her!"

This causes Skeeve to immediately jump down to the floor below. Unfortunately, the rope momentarily catches, yanking Skeeve off-balance, causing him to land with a thud. Quickly collecting himself, he runs for the stairs and starts to quickly descent to the lower floors. Fortunately, the rope does not catch significantly again.

Yanked into the air by the rope that has magically bound itself to her, Rikia tries to anticipate the inevitable collision with the wall of the tower. She is able to successful twist around so that she lands with her feet to the wall. However, as she is about to start walking up the side of the tower, the rope pulls her harder than she expected as it rips her towards the top of the tower. This causes her to bang up the side of the tower the rest of the way.

Khaguran works to guide the rope up to the top and when Rikia reaches the top he tries to catch her and tell Skeeve to stop running. Unfortunately, he positions himself wrong and she instead crashes into him as she clears the top of the parapet. This prevents him from calling out to Skeeve. Now also tangled in the rope, both are dragged towards the trap door, but are not pulled in as Skeeve has reached the bottom floor and stops.

Nursing his bruises, Skeeve calls up, "Is everyone safe and unharmed?"

"We got her onto the tower. We're still checking on the 'unharmed' part!" called back Khaguran.

By the time Khaguran untangles himself and unties Rikia, Skeeve has managed to limp back to the top of the stairs, and introductions are made.

Khaguran points to himself. "Khaguran, a wanderer. You seemed...stuck? We were trying to help, in any case."

Skeeve says, "And my name is Skeeve. Believe it or not, we were told by a phantom that you were trapped there by the tower and that if we didn't pull you out, you'd be lost forever. So, we yanked you out. We do apologize for the suddenness of every thing, but we only had a few seconds to operate in. And now we wait until we are able to escape from the tower. I am sorry to say that when you escape with us, you will be in our time, not when you came from."

Skeeve will then insist on getting downstairs and being ready to leave when their time appears. He will make sure we keep the door open and will be diligently watching for the time. On the second floor, he will point out the normal crossbows and offer for Rikia to take one if it still works.
OOC:
I figure Skeeve has no issue with the whole dimensional/time thing given his experiences with the fey. I also assume our phantom friend is gone helping save Rikia.

And, for the record, Skeeve is taking the crossbow, rope, spyglass, writing kit, flint/steel/tinder, the cups, and the bone dice. If Khaguran wants any of that, Skeeve will not object, but he is making sure those items are being taken.

Knowing you have several hours yet till your 24 hour incarceration is up you move get comfortable and swap stories.
Rikia recouns how she fled to the tower in the midst of a massive arcande assault. Her description reminds the others of tales of the Shattering. She recounts how she was trapped for several days with only a lone guard, whos description matchs the phantom the others met. Indesperation as the food was exhausted she used one of her masters scrolls and his talisman in an attempt to escape the tower and it field. At that time the tower was entirely cut off

Skeve and Khaguran in turn explain what the surmise happened after Rikia tried to flee the tower. Explaining about the Shattering and the end of the Dawn War. As you char you scour the tower and find nothing else of interest and settle to wait in front of the door.
Apr 13, 2023 6:31 pm
Khaguran shakes out his bedroll, sighing at the large torn patch that reminds him of his prior encounter with a griffon. It chafes him to know his curiosity trumped his better judgement, as it's prone to do now and again. He folds it neatly into a thick square, then uses it as a cushion to soften the hard pavers of the tower's floor.

In so many words, he haltingly asks Skeeve if he might be able to keep the spyglass, should they part ways further along, as he was very taken with its utility, simple beauty, and skillful make.
OOC:
Other than that bit of lite RP, I'm content to idle away the next several hours until our opportunity to leave comes.

Skeeve is cool with that. He just want to make sure it is taken because it could prove useful later.

After asking and getting the brief story of his encounter, Skeeve is duly impressed that Khaguran was face-to-face with a griffon and survive basically unscathed.

Rikia's countenance drops as she finds out that she's left "her time". How would she find Zastan now. Also to think that the Great War is over, she didn't think it would ever come to an end considering how long it had been going on. Trailing behind the two men as they head down the tower she ponders what to do next.

Where do you plan to go after we leave this wretched tower?

She sits up against a wall and palms her mentor's talisman. After some conversation if nothing else occurs she'll take a small nap.
OOC:
How far forward did Rikia travel in time?
I'm also good with some lite RP and then skipping to getting out of the tower.

OOC:
Thanks for letting me know. I don't want to cut RP short but come from a heavy tactical background to tend to move things along. It is alot harder to gague these things in PbP
Time passes and the distortions that fill the doorway become gradually clearer to all but Rikia who continues to only see the chaos that trapped her initially. As the view clear you begin to see the light of sunset and wooded hills you left yesterday. Gathering yourselves you wait for the best time and rush out the door. Rikia stifles a groan as she passes through the Barrier. The other two having done so the day before are better prepared for the experience and pull her along and then away from the tower. Stopping well clear of the tower the coolness of night begins sinking into you as the tension of being trapped begins to fade.

Rikia is oddly familiar and lost at the same time. Having visited the villages of the region several times over the last couple of years, or rather the last year she had with her master, she points out where the road used to cut through the countryside. Khaguran is barely able to make it out now that is has been pointed out and chuckles as the wagon train has ended up recreating the ancient roadway. Moving further off from the tower, just in case, you find a good place for a campsite in some trees with a few boulders making a nice sheltered location. Building a fire and clearing the ground you set out your bedrolls and lay back to rest.

Let me know of any nighttime arrangements and you can role play a bit more during this night.
I will move you along the wagon trail tomorrow or later this weekend.

Matchacha says:

"I am not sure. I was trying to find my way when I saw Khaguran enter the tower and followed, not knowing it was cursed. He was following a caravan, so I figured I'd follow along to see where that goes. I'm guessing that we probably increase our chances of success by sticking together, at least until we find a town."

OOC:
On the night, I am figuring we probably ought to take shifts to keep watch. Also, I'm not sure if everyone has the same starting items. If Rikia doesn't have a bedroll or anything, Skeeve will take turns so that everyone can get some decent sleep.

OOC:
A watch sounds good.
I don't know if we have the same starting items either. I think we do. Either way Rikia does have a bedroll.
Okay.

Rikia studies the area around her, nods slowly to herself, and then sighs. She sits against a rock and palms the talisman again. After a few deep breaths she stands up.

I can take first watch.

During her watch she paces back and forth. Keeping an eye out for danger as well as thinking.

Skeeve volunteers to go second. After they finish talking he hits the unrolled bedroll.
Apr 14, 2023 5:15 am
Rikia gazes up at the stars and recognizes a few constellations while others have changed. Using the peace of the night she sorts out her thoughts. There are things to consider but little she can do for now. Her shift passes peacefully and she wakes Skeeve before falling into an exhausted sleep troubled with dreams.

Skeeve and Khaguran take their turns but noting of note happens in the dim of the night. With the morning you share your provisions as Rikia had exhausted hers in the tower before attempting to escape. Luckily her master had been a practical scholar and had pointed out edible plants and how to find them. Bothe Skeeve and Khaguran are familiar as well with living off the land and between three of you a couple of snacks are rounded up to supplement the bland trail rations that was your breakfast as you move to find the wagon trail.

Refreshing your water supplies when you have the chance you find the wagon trail and Rikia explains the route and where villages had been along its way before the Shattering. The wagon trail veers more to the south than Rikia was expecting. If the wagons are truly heading to Paphos then their course to the south will take them to a river that must be crossed before reaching the southern half of the city. The are enough traces that Khaguran is able to make out the old road now which Rikia says leads to the northern quarter of Paphos and will be much shorter.

Do you follow the wagons to south Paphos or the old road to north Paphos?

OOC:
If I remember correctly, it was kind of that the wagon track the caravan was using was relatively new, or perhaps ill-used until recently, so it piqued his interest that a group of folks were travelling down it. So basically yes, Adventure is out there!
Apr 15, 2023 2:57 am
OOC:
As far as the choice in front of us, I think Khaguran's preference is to keep following the caravan, since it's been his objective this whole time; however, should the other members of the party want to take the older road north, he wouldn't part ways. I think he sees enough value in traveling with his new companions that it's worth going where they go. In any case, as long as he ends up in Paphos he can still track ththe wagons down, maybe.

I think Rikia would want to take the northern route but she also wouldn't split the party because she doesn't want to be alone in this post Great War world.

After a stuttering overly polite and considerate conversation (lacking type A has a draw back, not being type A I am familiar with this) you take the southern track, following the wagon trail. Half a day later you come to a large swift river. Khaguran estimates the wagons had large and strong draft animals pulling them and so had little trouble fording the river. You however may have trouble. The river is forded at is widest lowest point from what you can see up and down river.

How will you cross the river?

The river is at least 60 feet wide where the wagons cross. Upstream it narrows to 40 feet and has rocks and rapids you might be able to cross but would suffer more if you slipped off of the rocks. Downstream the rapids are even worse.
Apr 15, 2023 1:25 pm
OOC:
Are there any trees or rocks or such on the far side? The near side?

Also, in Rikia's memory, does the northern trail also cross the river?
Apr 15, 2023 1:44 pm
There are some trees in the area but they have been getting thinner the further west you have traveled. Rikia tells how the area around the city was primarily farmland with some orchards and strips of wilderness. The northern passage would not cross the river, unless it moved. From lore and records you know the Shattering altered many natural features.
Apr 15, 2023 3:08 pm
OOC:
Hm, might we be able to affix something to a length of rope and fire it across the river with the crossbow? I'm not sure if its properties would allow us to do that, but my thinking is we might be able to basically grappling-hook something on the far shore, then have a rope line to hold onto as we try to ford. I have a length of 50ft, so we could either tie another length onto it, or try the same approach where the river is narrower at the rocky rapids.
Apr 15, 2023 3:54 pm
Rikia points upstream.

"While I rather not cross a river at all if we must then the narrower path is preferable."
OOC:
I'm cool with using the rope at the upper stream area where it is narrower.
Apr 15, 2023 5:12 pm
The magic crossbow will only fire rope. Essentially it enchants 5 feet of rope into a magical grappling hook that automatically secures itself if it is possible to the target selected. Noting can be done to the end being fired to make it work better. The other end of the rope can be anchored or tied to another rope to lengthen it.

Searching up stream you look for a pair of trees, one on each side, to anchor the rope to. moving up stream several hundred feet you find a pair of good candidates. The trees both are healthy and tall enough to string the rope well above the river but they are more than 50 feet apart. All the other trees by the river are too small or look like they might break under you weight. Securing two ropes you can anchor the far side with the Rope Caster and tie off the near side. But how will you get the rope back?

The trees are about 3 feet above the river and set back from it about 10 feet each and thick enough to support a couple of you at a time as long as they are tied to below 15 feet off the ground.

Any special instructions on setting up the rope or on crossing?
Roll a strength, acrobatics, climbing test when you are ready to to cross to see if you have any trouble

Rolls

tree quality and distance - (3d6)

(336) = 12

Apr 15, 2023 9:38 pm
Skeeve says, "How about this: let's tie my two ropes together, and anchor one end on this tree (a tree close to the water on our side) and then fire the other end of the rope at the far tree, giving a taunt rope to climb across. Then, Khaguran and Rikia can use their ropes to make a 'safety harness' to the crossing rope. They can then, one at a time, shimmy across the river. If they fall off, the 'safety rope' should keep them out of the water and allow them to continue their journey. When it is my turn, I will untie my rope from the tree and tie it to myself. I can then cross on the rocks. If I fail, you two can pull me across. I might get batted around a bit, but I should be able to make it. Worst case, the current should swing me around and wash me up 100 feet down the shore."
OOC:
On the other hand, can I use my Spell-Touched to command the far end of the rope to untie? Or use it like "mage hand" so to speak?

On a related subject, if we cut a rope in half, can Rikia or Skeeve use their magic to knit it back together ("mending" the cut)?

If we do the above plan, I will ask Khaguran to carry my writing kit. Everything else should be able to get soaked and dry out nicely. That would be ruined by the soaking.

OOC:
Spell touched can untie a rope but that is about the limit for the range. You have enough slack you could do a clever skip knot.
Mending is allowed with a spell touched test
Apr 15, 2023 11:04 pm
OOC:
Hmm. How about this: Same plan for Khaguran and Rikia. They use their own ropes to cross. Assuming we don't need the full 100 feet of rope for the crossing, Skeeve cuts one his ropes for his own harness, uses the shorter rope to tie to the near tree, and the full length rope to hit the other tree. He uses his rope segment for his own harness and crosses the river like the others. Once at the far end, he uses Spell-Touched to untie the knot holding the two ropes together. In the end, he loses most of the newly acquired rope, but still has the harness rope and a full rope. The others still have their full ropes, too.

If we only need about 70 feet, we could try the "slip knot". In that the rope on the starting side would be doubled-up so that the knot binding the two ropes together also includes the release. Once we're across Skeeve can "mage hand" the release, and the can pull the rope over.

If he needs the full length of both ropes (i.e. the full 100 feet), then he takes one of the other ropes and cuts it into two. The two of them use a piece for the harnesses. (The third uses their uncut rope.) We still lose the found rope, and in this case will have a cut up rope that Skeeve can eventually mend. (Even if it takes multiple tries he can retry until it works.)

Oh! If we need the full length of both ropes, I guess he could "force bolt" the rope on the other side of the river. We'd lose like 5 feet on the far rope, but at least we'd keep most of it and we don't have to play "knot games" to make it work. (If it isn't too far away for the force bolt.)

Still, worse case, we just count the one rope segment as a loss and we each still have our full 50 feet of rope left.

I was trying to offer different ideas. No offense intended.
Anyway, Skeeve will still go last. He will help Khaguran make sure his harness stays short enough to stay out of the water even if he slips (i.e. fails a roll) and has him carry over the writing kit.

Skeve hase the mose difficulty as you learn that 70 feet of rope can stretch quite a bit when attached horizontally with weight in the middle. Though he gets a bit wet and has a bit of difficulty pulling himself to shore you all manage to cross sofely.

It takes Skeeve a minute to focus his magic ans work on the rope across the way till Khaguran hands him the spy glass which allows him to see what he is doing. At the edge of his magical range he finally manages to work the slip knot free and you recover your rope.

Skeve dries his cloths wit a touch of magic and you continue following the wagon trail . .

With the track to follow and companions to start the load you spend a couple of days of relatively peaceful travel. The track had swung south east then east then north east to skirt a heavily wooded region and Rikia tells the others you are likely now approaching the city from the south.

As you move east the region becomes wetter and the track leads to a well packed road than enters a thick swamp. Cautiously you follow the road and Khaguran points out that this section of the road sees daily traffic both east and west bound. Following the road you reach a small wooden watch tower than straddles the road at about mid day. Beyond the tower is bridge to another. Atop the tower are two guards and two more stand at the gate.

The guards at first do not seem to concerned as your approach. However as your get closer the guards look you over and pull weapons and stand at the ready. Halt!

The nearest town is about a hundred miles from here!

This bring the Shattered Lands you know there are no large towns but though Skeeve did get a bit turned around by a few bad border crossing he is sure that is a bit of an exaggeration. Khaguran came grin the west a bit more than a weeks travel and encountered nothing in the last 5. Rikia knows there were farms, settlement and a few villages around Paphos but that was before the Shattering.

The guards on the ground level look up to one of the ones on top of the tower, about 20 feet up to the top of the tower walls, who is listening and watching you. He talks with the other guard next to him who dissapears out of sight followed by a short series of military horn calls.

The guards, upon hearing the horn cal, move back under the tower and into the shaded interior. The tower is roughly a 20 foot cube with a large 15 foot sqare double door gate that is currently open. Though keeping an eye on you the two guards inside the tower take up seats set into the walls beyond the open gate doors.

Wait where you are. The guard commander calls down to you.

After several minutes another guard is seen crossing the bridge with an older man. They talk with the tower guards and then approach.
Danoll
Welcome strangers. I hear your liking for a town? he chuckles at this.
Come along then. I introduce your to the local Mayor and he laughs again.
Your are excited by the man, who introduced himself as Danoll as you walk, and the guards that came with him. The bridge cruises a short down on water and the road continues east. You soon leave the swamp and see a wall in the distance. It is of stone and had more guards that post you though but a couple more fall in behind you.

The large office your enter leads to a smaller but better furnished room with a week dressed man sitting behind the desk. You all file in including Danoll and the 3 guards.

Phlan
Looking you over here grey's you politely. Welcome travelers. I must admit to being a bit surprised at your arrival
May I ask where you came from?

Skeeve says, "My friend here," pointing to Rikia, "and I were servants of a wizard. She was an apprentice; I a mere servant. He disappeared a while ago, and we have been out looking for him. However we became horribly lost after crossing through Borders. During our last crossing, we met our new friend," directing to Khaguran.

Finishing he says, "Really, we're just trying to find our bearings."
OOC:
Yes, he's lying. He doesn't trust anyone here and figures that Rikia admitting she's out of her original time will not help. Hopefully she isn't insulted with me doing this. Honestly, he's pretty sure we're in some kind of bandit camp and we're probably in a pretty bad situation.
Apr 18, 2023 7:02 pm
Rikia nods her head when Skeeve points at her. She also does not trust these people. She looks around the room, examining the walls and Phlan's desk if she is able to view it without drawing attention to herself. She tries to get more information about who these people may be.

With a raised eyebrow, he does that really well and you think he might practice or just be an expressively gifted individual, he asks You lost your master, a wizard, and decided wandering the Shattered Lands looking for him was a good idea? He stares at Skeve and Rikia in turn.

The building, as well as the others you saw coming into the walled enclosure, is a mix of old stonework and what appears to be magically shaped stone. The interior is simply furnished and all except the chair and desk the man is using are plain and simple. The chair has extra padding and the table is polished and has panels so that you can not see his legs and from its size assume it has shelves or drawers on his side. The desk and shelves along the wall behind him are filled with papers, scrolls, maps, lists, and ledgers neatly written but the contents are too small to read at this range. The map vaguely reminds Rikia of the Paphos region but where the city should clearly be has only a few symbols an notations.

Sitting back the man looks at all three of you for a while before sighing. Very well. It was bound to happen at some point. Turning to the guard who accompanied Danoll he says Lock them up for the day captain. Have the priest and wizard notified so they can perform some divinations on them. I will decide what to do about them tomorrow after that is done. Do not treat them harshly. They just might be as they say.

Tyren (Captain)
Looking at you doubtfully he replies Aye sir. We'll do as you say.
Turning to you he continues Come along peacefully and you wont be mistreated. Cause any trouble and . . . he trails off meaningfully as he rests his hand on his sword.

Forgive me if I don't accept open arms.
Apr 19, 2023 5:37 pm
You are escorted to a small but comfortable cells that the captain explains is usually used to hold guards or workmen who have had too much to drink. Rikia is placed in a cell by herself while Skeve and Khaguran share another adjacent. The caells are seporated by thick stone rods with several inch gaps from each other and the guard room which has a single guard in attendance. The doords are rough wood slats and look like they could be broken without too much trouble but would take time and make alot of noise. You are told to place all your goods on a table, in sight of the cells, but are not searched before being locked in the cells.

Guard
The priest and wizard will be along when they have time. Lunch at noon, dinner at dusk. Water on the hour and the latrine is just outside which you can use every two hours at the guard rotation. So go now if you need or just hold it. The lone guard ratles things off in a bored manner though he does seem curious and looks you over closely.

The wall and gate has several guards but inside are streets, shops, workers, and people wandering around. It isn't busy but there are people about. Khaguran, having a notoriously small bladder, takes advantage of the opportunity to relieve himself before being locked up. He understands the authority figures here seem only to be taking precautions rather than showing outright hostility, and is content to hand over his pack to the guard and wait patiently in the cell with Skeeve until the party is called for. After about an hour a noble looking older yet well build man comes in to talk with you. After a short prayer, that Skeve and Rikia feel a touch of magic in, he begins asking your names and where you come from. Though friendly and polite he casts a stern glance at Skeeve, or the others, when any falsehood is uttered. Though he does not correct you he can obviously tell when he is being lied to.
He explains to you briefly that you are welcome to stay after certain facts have been verified and will answer some general questions about him and his faith but evades revealing any details about the group that has you held captive.

Post any question, revisions, or additions you want to make to your story and statements.

About half an hour after the priest another old, scholarly looking, man walks in and after a short whispered conversation with the priest he nods to you and performs a ritual casting that takes several minutes. As the ritual proceeds the confines of your cells are lines with arcane energies that soon form solid surfaces around you. At the completion of the spell the arcane barriers collapse into, through, and end up surrounding you in a field of energy. Each of you is now outlined in a visible aura. The wizard studies you for several minutes, thanks you for your time, wishes you well, and leaves.

The spell reveals your auras. Your aura is determined by your race, personality, and history. Please give a description of your aura color, intensity, appearance (fire, a glow, crystalline, elemental, metallic, etc). Skeeve will cop to partially lying at first, but explaining that the only real lie was that he was a servant for Rikia's wizard. That Rikia was a wizard's apprentice wasn't a lie. That's not lying or lying by omission, as no one has actually asked questions in any kind of detail. So, with the revisions given above, he is no longer lying. He is simply not telling the full story.
Skeeve's aura color is green. It starts as a green mist; diffuse at first, but gaining density as it closes in on him. Tendrils of the mist start to form and appear as wispy leafy vines that wrap around him without binding him. As they fully wrap around him the vine merge into his form, slightly changing his appearance. The features continually change until the aura is finally dismissed. At various points the changing features show him with pointed ears, insectile wings, antennae on his forehead, leaves for hair, claws on his hands, being completely translucent, a conical cap on his head, cat-like eyes, and other such oddities. Some features are repeated, but there is no pattern or order.
OOC:
Basically, it shows he is a mortal human, but has been corrupted/influenced by power not of the material plane. If there is some indication, it will also show that this is not the world on which he was born. It will show he has a decent heart, but he is capricious and mercurial.

When first put into her cell Rikia leans against a wall and looks down at her hands. Since her stuff was taken she can't even hold onto her mentor's talisman for comfort. She replies to any conversation directed at her from Skeeve and Khaguran but overall is very distant.

Once the priest arrives and starts questioning her she affirms everything that was said earlier. She is a wizard's apprentice, she is looking for him, and she is lost, she met these guys and traveled with them because there is strength in numbers.
OOC:
For Rikia there is no reason to mention the time travel because she believes lost should cover the questions asked.
Rikia's aura color is light grey. It forms as thick (intense) clouds all around her. Making it hard if not impossible to see her. Slowly the clouds rise up allowing Rikia to be seen. A drizzle falls from the clouds and as they hit the ground they form the shape of lilies before fading to allow new lilies to form.
OOC:
Her aura represents the barriers put up being a street urchin when she was younger and having to fend for herself. As well as the fact that many people pretended like they didn't see her so they wouldn't help her. But then her mentor saw her and showed her that she could have the power to help and give life to other disenfranchised People. She may seem distant because of her upbringing but she does want to help.

Wow, cool aura descriptions. I need to tag this page and refference your auras later somehow.. We can get past all this unpleasentness after @Rizado96 / Khaguran posts

OOC:
What you've all been waiting for, haha. Very cool auras from my fellow adventurers, indeed!
Khaguran will have remained relatively taciturn and characteristically laconic throughout the interactions with the priest and wizard, mostly just curious about the qualities and origin of the abilities they displayed.

He appreciates that the priest seems a robust man with a keen mind. Khaguran has seen many so-called holy men in his travels who were given to indulgence, which in his estimation dulls the wits and softens the body. He probably tells the priest this, in so many words.

Khaguran's aura is as a storm of glowing embers driven by strong wind, which eddy and swirl, and fly up in jets of sparks before fading at the aura's edge.

After the wizard finishes his spell and records various aspects of your auras he puts away his supplies. Before leaving he smiles at you kindly and says as he heads out Be sure you ask for the stew with fresh bread for supper. It should be warm and comes with fresh butter With a loud lip pop he is off.

You spend the night, getting the stew which is really good and the bread with butter is better, and awake refreshed in the morning. After a filling but simple breakfast the captain of the guard lets you out and has you follow him, without an escort this time, to go see the priest.

Lord Felspar
As you enter his office, which is just off a large common room used for worship of various gods, the priest gestures you to take a chair. Come, sit and we shall talk.
I do apologize for the nature of your stay last night but please know we only did this out of caution. Fiznik and believe you are not spies or agents of foreign powers. Though not all of your story was true we can understand caution.

After chatting for a while he explains a bit about the expedition.
[ +- ] The Expedition
He then explains that you are free to go but that they are asking you to swear by a god of your choice not to divulge any information about the expedition or the area.

You can chat and ask questions of the priest. When you are ready to go he summons a guide to explain the basics of the expedition and your options should you choose to stay here.
Post either questions or comments to/with the priest or scout.

"By the Four Names of the Four Winds, I am sworn to secrecy regarding all matters pertaining to your outpost and activities here.

Please tell me, what is to be gained from your striving here? I would gladly take part if in ancient Paphos there may be some worthy challenge to overcome and treasures to recover."

Lord Felspar
Though little n was truly lost in the Shattering much was fragmented and confused. We hope to find clues to help trait the lands and people. He continues in what you soon suspect is one of his favorite summons on unity, striving for tht betterment of all and the glories gained from following the trains of the Gods. While chatting he will press for a oath to not peace and secrecy with respect the expedition and its people from each of you. He eventually call in a young Tiefling woman he introduces as Woosa.

Woosaa
Woosa is the leader of one of the scouting teams and has been here since the base was established. She explains how the base was planned bebore the expedition knew there were any other forces in the area and they actuatlly took it from a band of hobgoblins, goblins, and bugbear. She guides you around the base (See map in the ~Tiny Info~ available in game as a expandable zone with the grey button below the rolls and reply sections) and explains how most trafic is actually to and from the base uses the river but as the expedition has ties to may lands the Kingdoms established the road you ended up following.
Most of the work is done by the scouts who have been exploreing the city but recent finds of standing Remnant has gotten the researches buisy investigating those. The guards mostly stay on base though some acompany the researchers to sites discovered by the scouts. Some guards and other base personel take up the odd scouting mission. I heard that there is actually a couple of base personel doing a scout mission on baase. It seems they were looking to expand the wharehouse and found some tunnes attacked to old celars they were workin g on below it.
Other than the scouts, guards, and researchers there are a few shops on base including a bar/tavern for the louder rougher crown and cantina/inn for the quieter crowds. The Smith Mord buys and sells alot of gear and the artificer Fiznik runs a general store.

Ending the tour Woosaa drops you off at the Tavern where she arranges for you to have lunch "on the house" as a welcome gift and apology.
OOC:
Alrigh, I am highjacking things for a moment to pull the two teams together.
Story will continue in the Base
