Khyree's Story

Jungle Clearing

https://i.imgur.com/1nhExpV.jpg

You look at your master with admiration as he–still, even in his old age–flawlessly executes a series of kicks to at least 5 blood raptors surrounding him. You doubt any of them were fatal blows, but each blow was masterfully placed. There’s no doubt each creature will be out of commission for hours. As even more seem to be emerging from the morass of vines and undergrowth, a larger raptor lunges toward him. He reacts with a spinning round kick as he leaps over the prone creatures–that just suffered his blows–and delivers a blow that sends the large jungle predator whimpering back into the dense, tangled vegetation.

https://i.imgur.com/19AKlHu.jpg

A blood raptor leaps from a tree, landing directly in front of you in this small, oddly bare, elevated clearing where you and your master are being ambushed. An out-of-place circle of rocks surround you in the clearing. You can hear the screeching calls of other raptors on the ground below the elevated area where you stand and others in the nearby trees, perhaps ready to pounce. It sounds like there must be at least ten more in this pack.

As the predator lunges, trying to sink it's teeth into your neck, you quickly react by wedging your staff in its jaws. After a short but intense test of strength, you seizes the opportunity to use the raptor's force against itself. Just as it is about to overpower you, you shift your position and the pack beast stumbles away from you to your side. Although you remain relatively unscathed, you can feel that the struggle robbed you of some energy.

As you regain focus you can hear that Grekkor is now dealing with two screeching raptors.

With a flaming trail, your staff strikes the beast across the side of its head. As you follow through, the creature's head turns under the force of your weapon and blood flies from its jaw. You are about to finish it with a fury of kicks but before you need to, the raptor falls to the ground motionless.

Just as it it does, two more leap from trees in front of you and another leaps out from the undergrowth beyond the clearing. Your master intercepts a raptor that lunges at him from a tree and, directing its momentum, heaves it into that same tangled vegetation. As he does he says calmly but firmly over the screeches of your attackers, "Kyree, focus the Breath of the Dragon. We shall center our Ki together."
Apr 24, 2023 10:22 pm
Khyree focuses, with her quarterstaff held two-handed in a bar across in front of her to help defects attacks from the raptors. See feels the Ki rising through her and concentrating in her throat. The mystic flames quickly subside and the four raptors that moments ago were ready to pounce lie still as chared unrecognizable heaps as your feet. You hear any other raptors that were waiting to attack in the bush scatter after the blast.

Your master has already turned his attention to the circle of stones. He closes his eyes and rests his hand on one of the stones. A moment later, a faint hum results and you see the circle begin to slightly glow. He pulls his hand away and opens his eyes. The stones return to their mundane state.

Grekkor stoically speaks, perhaps to remind himself to stay calm and focussed, not to engage in the distraction of excitement, as much as to remind you of the mission.

"This is the power circle we have been seeking. It can guide us to the other two if we are able to awaken its connection to the Ascendant Dragon. Yes. The three circles will reveal our order's ancient temple. There we will find the Dragon Amulet which finally will provide us the first step in locating any other dragonborn of our order that may exist in this physical world or their descendants touched by the Dragon. We will need rest, as our complete focus will be necessary to fully awaken this circle."

You know, even though he doesn't outwardly show it, that this is a monumentous moment for your master as he has spend decades--since leaving the temple in Malpheggi Swamp-- searching for the ancient temple of his people in these jungles. He has trained you to understand the Way of the Ascendant Dragon and to assist him in this endeavor.

Grekkor says, "You have done well Khyree." He pauses and looks at the circle of stones then into the jungle bush. "We indeed need rest, for it will take all our Ki to fully awaken this circle to the Dragon. We could attempt to find shelter nearby and come back here rested, or we can focus our draconic presence on these stones to awaken them enough to provide us a circle of protection while we rest. What do you think is the wise choice my apprentice?"
OOC:
If you choose to attempt to awaken the stones enough to provide a circle of protection, it will take a Persuasion check with a DC of 15. For each Ki you spend, you can add +1 to your roll (you only have 1 Ki left). Grekkor has five Ki left after the battle so his participation will add +5 to your roll. Therefore your roll would be 1d20+6 against a DC of 15. Due to your regular Draconic Presence feature, if you fail this Charisma based check you can reroll.
Apr 28, 2023 8:45 pm
Khyree looks at her master with a smile. "The wise choice would be to return when our strength has recovered, but that also chances the return of the raptors. Let us try to erect the protective circle, Master."

"I believe your judgment is wise. And I trust your instincts. We do not know how much energy we will use making our way back here after rest. So as you suggest let us call on the force of the Dragon to protect us in this circle now. Our order has created this location to be a direct connection to that force. And we should act quickly before more raptors come," attests Grekkor.

Grekkor drags some limp raptors outside of the stone circle and then kneels by one of the rocks. He rests his hand on it and closes his eyes. You take his lead on the other side of the circle, doing the same. You can feel the force surging in you and in the rock. You focus intently on persuading The Dragon to return once more to this circle. Again the stones begin to hum faintly and then glow. The hum grows in volume and intensity and the glow becomes continually brighter until the hum morphs into the sound of a dragon's roar and the now intense glow lifts from the rocks and circles around you and your master, taking the shape of two swirling dragons. When you open your eyes you see the inspiring force of the Ascending Dragon swirling around you. After a few moments the roars subside and the visible energy dissipates, but you can still clearly feel its presence.

"We have reminded the Dragon force of the existence of this power circle and bid it to protect us here, but we will need to focus all our Ki to persuade it to fully awaken all three places of power. This may take a while."

After you both finish eating, Grekkor sits cross-legged in the center of the circle and bids you to join. You do, closing your eyes, you can once again feel the force surging in you and resume your attempt of persuasion. Your energy focusses on the location of the other circles. Yet again, the stones begin to hum faintly and then glow. The hum grows in volume and intensity until, this time, you feel as if you are lifted from the clearing and have become one with the Dragon; you see through its eyes, feel the wind on your body as you soar high above the jungle, and you know the way to the other circles.

Over the course of her time with him, Grekkor has related to Khyree about his jungle experiences as well what he has learned from natives.

Khyree has had these adventures on the Jungle Coast with Grekkor:
1. She's explored the Lands of Grippli, which is made up of Froglin peoples who are mostly peaceful traders and who have the most contact with the trade routes of the northern kingdoms.
2. She's explored the Oltec Ruins near Lake Ilarm.
3. She's avoided, lizardmen tribes, the serpentine peoples, and the medusea while searching The Far Mountains.

From her recent out-of-body experience with the Dragon force, Khyree will know a bit about the layout of this jungle.
Khyree may ask Grekkor to elaborate on anything he has experienced or learned.
You may also ask me to elaborate on something on the map based on what Khyree may know about it.

On the map, C1 is the Stone Circle Khyree is currently in. C2 is the one on the ancient tree limb. And C3 is the one in the hidden valley pool.

After her next rest, Khyree awakens and looks about to ensure herself of their current location and her mentor's presence. Should he be awake as well, she will speak. If not, she wait until he stirs.

"To which of the two remaining circles first, Master? The tree to the north or the south to the hidden pool? The tree seemed closer, but I defer to your greater knowledge of these lands."

"You continue to underestimate your instinct and knowledge Khyree," Replies Grekkor, who may have been sleeping when you spoke. You are not entirely sure. If he was, he instantly became conscious of your inquiry and did not hesitate to reply.

"The force of the Dragon runs strong through you. You have learned quickly. I will not always be around to defer to. I am old Khyree. You must be the one to finish the search for any of the Dragon who still exist on this plane. It is you, not I, who will be the reunitor." He asserts, then pauses before continuing.

"North to the tree first…Yes. It is closer. You are right. Between us and the tree is jungle inhabited by fierce centaurs, proud wemics, and cunning zebrataurs who fight for dominance. Beyond that are clans of mistrustful Gnomes who stayed behind in the jungle when their kin, millennia ago, built an earthshaker and migrated from the jungle south to the Vulture Peninsula. All are distrustful of outsiders. Beyond the Gnomes it is said that a great curse rests on the jungle that prevents souls from leaving the decaying bodies of once living flesh."

"I do not underestimate, Master." Khyree interjects. "I simply defer to your countless years of wisdom and experience. To do otherwise would be a lapse of sense."

"To the tree then." She says and is off.

Many days pass as you travel north through dense jungle, finding shelter in caves, on wide tree limbs, and on cliff ledges protected from hungry raptor and jungle dog packs. Luckily your encounters have been mostly benign. Giant frogs, large constrictors, and long limbed sloths often sleepily ignore your careful haul through the thick vegetation. At times heavy rainfall makes it impossible to see even inches in front of you.

This afternoon heavy rainfall comes once again. You and Grekkor are about to pass into a small clearing when a faint sound of battle over the roar of rain brings you both to a halt. The rain makes it hard to pinpoint the sound’s direction.

At the order of the centaur commander, a force of 11 centaur soldiers emerge from the underwood and ground cover, nearly surrounding you in a semi-circle formation. They raise bows and aim arrows at you and Grekkor. Two of them, on the right end of their line, ready a large net.

The commander says with a booming voice in heavily accented Common, "Human, Dragonman...why here? You humans' spies?"

You and Grekkor are currently facing the centaur commander and his soldiers.
OOC:
Directly behind Khyree and Grekkor is the cover they crouched behind to witness the battle below (see picture). In front of them is the centaur force. Behind the centaurs is jungle forest-line they emerged from. It may be possible to disengage to the left between a narrow pass between the centaurs and the jungle ridge. The ridge drops down to the ongoing battle about 50' below. To the right, the pass between the centaurs and the ridge is a bit wider, but that is also the side where two centaurs are preparing the net, so disengaing would involve passing by the net. (They wouldn't be able to throw it until next round.) It would be possible to escape down the jungle ridge. The descent has lots of vegetation, roots, and vines that would make it possible to descend and stay concealed, but also would of course bring Khyree closer to the battle below.

The centaurs are taken off guard by your rush. You and Grekkor dart past the net-holding centaurs who unsuccessfully scramble to finish their job as you deftly dart under the unprepared trap.

You speed into the bush to your right, following the edge of the ridge. You hear a barrage of arrows let loose behind you. A couple land in trees you run by. Others thud into earth as you break free. The commander's booming call and the the sound of galloping hooves soon follow. They are in pursuit!

May 25, 2023 3:21 am
With the centaurs in pursuit, you and Grekkor both pick up your pace, weaving through as many tighter spaces between trees and underbrush as possible in attempt to move more quickly through the dense vegetation than the four-legged creatures. The centaurs prove surprisingly agile in their jungle home, but still, you manage to stay slightly ahead of their advance. Some attempt to follow your path but are eventually forced to yield to the dense jungle obstacles you evade through. Others--you can't be sure how many--run further away from the ridge where it is more open for them, attempting to gain on you, on your left, and keep you pinned to the cliffy edge.

The rain begins to pickup even more fiercely, which--along with the fact that it is now behind you--makes the sound of the battle below distant once again.

https://i.imgur.com/sT8N1w7.jpg

You can tell that you are faring better than your master in this chase. As strong and agile as he is, his heavy breathing reveals his age is taking its toll on him. Regardless, he presses on with you in the lead.

A couple arrows fly from the centaurs that try to gain along side of you on your left and try to keep you pinned to the ridge.

The fast-paced chase persists. For at least fifteen minutes more you continue to agilely out maneuver the centaurs. The centaurs try hard to keep up. Grekkor as well continues try to keep up with you.

The rainfall begins to taper off.

One pursuing centaur attempts another shot...but aiming is exceedingly difficult as you purposely weave through undergrowth cover...He misses.

The long chase begins to take its toll on Grekkor. His maneuvers begin to slow, his age is finally affecting his performance. The centaurs notice your old master falling back slightly and let out loud hollers to encourage each other to pick up pace. Newly invigorated, they begin to close in--although you still have the dense jungle cover surrounding your movements, making it hard for them to get a clear shot or get too close to you.

A pair of centaurs do manage to get close enough to Grekkor to both fire a shot at him.

Grekkor quickly turns and snatches an arrow out of the air just as it is about to pierce him. He simultaeously flings the arrow back at the centaur who let it loose on him.

The returned arrow lodges into the centuar's hip, but it advances on ignoring the arrow. It attempts to dive deeper into the bush and gain on Grekkor.

The 'Grekkor: Deflect Missle (incoming damage reduction)' of 23 points was pointless to roll because the damage of the arrow he deflected was only 7. But it was just fun to see how many points Grekkor could deflect anyway. :)

You press on with urgency, winding through trees and underbrush. The centaur with the arrow in his hip leaps into the bush and tries to take advantage of the tiring and slowing Grekkor.
OOC:
I'm going to use the 23 you rolled for Khyree earlier as the DC the centaur has to beat to catch up to you, instead of slowing things down and making you roll again. Grekkor failed his Constitution check earlier and has one level of exhaustion, therefore disadvantage in his ability checks. The centaur closing on him also has disadvantage because he's moving deeper into the dense bush.

The centaur leaps around and over vines and undergrowth, managing to get closer to Grekkor. Just as one of the centaur's hooves is about to come down on Grekkor from above him, Grekkor dives low and slides under an area of dense vines. The creature's hooves come down and get tangled in the undergrowth. Grekkor presses on while the centaur remains stuck. It writhes in anger, pulls back its bow, and tries to aim for the evading Grekkor escaping through the dense jungle.

As the centaur pulls back its bow string and stands waiting for a clear shot, suddenly a huge tree limb swings from above and hits the centaur squarely in its side sending it flying across the bush into another tree. That tree scoops down a limb and picks up the tiny looking centaur by one leg. The trees are moving!!

You hear a horn sound, followed by the booming centaur commander's voice. The centaurs stop their advance and you hear the heavy sound of hooves turning back. The centaurs retreat.

You hear all this while you wind through trees and underbrush, occasionally looking back to catch glimpses. Then suddenly you come to a spot where your instinct forces you to a complete stop. Directly ahead of you the dense vegetation opens up to a rocky clearing. In this clearing is a land-locked ship, old and battered looking, yet cradled by the forest. Large jungle trees 'walk' about as if they are patrolling the area around the ship.

"Well, that's not something you see every day." Khyree says, finally stopping to let old Grekkor take a breath. "Let's hope the Ents are less hostile than the four-footed barbarians arounds here. I wonder if they can understand us?"
May 29, 2023 1:26 pm
Uncharacteristcally winded, Grekkor makes it next to you as you speak.

He peers out into the rocky clearing and says inquisitively, "The trees could have stopped our advance on this area, yet they only pushed back the centaurs." He closes his eyes for a moment. "There's something about this place. Do you feel it?" He asks.

Indeed you do feel something that is not dissimilar from what you felt many days ago when, in the circle of protection, you experienced the vision of joining the Dragon and souring above the jungle.
May 29, 2023 7:11 pm
"Fair point, Master."Khyree admits. She holds position for another couple minutes, then cautiously winds her way toward the ship.
May 30, 2023 3:09 am
When you step into the clearing the trees that move about stop. When you continue your advance toward the ship, a few trees that stand between you and the ship part to either side of you and let you through. You are being offered a clear line to the ship.

Witnessing in awe the offering you are given by the living trees, Grekkor follows you into the clearing.

When you are close enough to touch a rope hanging from the ship, movement through vegetation on a rocky cliff on the other side of the clearing catches your eye. You spot a flash of the same red you saw earlier on the red-turbaned humans battling the centaurs. Alerted by the flash of red, your peripheral vision tunes into more red on the outskirts of the clearing. You are sure your subtle reaction and movement did not reveal that you are aware of your onlookers. Grekkor comes up behind you, apparently unaware himself because he says, "It is as if the trees are asking us to board," he says to you with astonishment. "...It can't be, can it?" He mummers, almost to himself.
May 30, 2023 10:34 pm
"The turbanheads are watching us from the cliffs and the edge of the clearing, Master." Khryee reveals to Grekkor quietly, as she moves to get aboard the land-locked ship.
Jun 1, 2023 4:44 pm
The Lost Ship

With your warning Grekkor snaps out of his ponderous thought. He tries to examine the cliffs without moving and therefore giving away that you have detected the humans. He doesn't seem to spot the onlookers. "You see them again? How many?"

As he asks, you shimmy up a rope and hop over a rail of the boat's main deck, keeping low.

https://i.imgur.com/Vts0jJB.jpg

The deck is old, even ancient, overgrown with forest moss and plants. Any remnant of sails are thin, tattered, and soiled. Though planks and rails are amazingly somehow still sturdy and something about it all is welcoming.

Right after you land on the deck and quickly peer around, a bolt of lightning flys from a cliff and strikes one of the guarding trees, setting its leaves ablaze. The giant plant writhes in pain. Other trees rush to the border of the clearing just as a barrage of flaming arrows fly into the clearing. Arrows land on many living trees and otherwise fall to the ground or bounce off rocks. The area is still very damp from all the previous rain so not many arrows are able to stay lit or ignite their mark.

Grekkor did not follow you onto the ship.
Jun 3, 2023 5:12 am
"Master?!" Khyree glances back to see what is up with Grekkor.

There must be something aboard this old ship that is important enough to guard it against unwanted invaders. She thinks to herself. Quickly, she moves toward the old ship's helm above the traditional captain's quarterdeck.
Jun 9, 2023 6:51 am
When you glance back to see what Grekkor is doing, you spot him sneaking stealthily into the cover on the outskirts of the clearing, in the direction of the human ambushers.

You then quickly move toward the helm. As you climb the stairs leading above the quarterdeck and stand before the helm, it begins to radiate a blue energy. You feel a surge of the Dragon force run through you much like you did in the protection circle many days ago. Transfixed on the wheel, you feel like it invites you to grasp it.

Another barrage of flaming-arrows fly. A few land on the main deck, stiffly lodging into rain soaked wood and in puddles of water.

The helm glows brighter...a faint voice calls your name, "Khyree." It's not a human voice. You are not sure if the voice is in your mind only or not, but it sounds as if it calls out from another realm of existence.

https://i.imgur.com/QSkHXX2.jpg

As you try to understand the meaning of the voice and the surge of force drawing you to the helm, you notice a figure rise from some underbrush not very far from the ship. The figure levitates in the air. An orb hovering above the figure's hand emits a white light that begins to glow brighter. Crackling electrical energy surrounds the orb. The energy also grows in intensity.
Jun 10, 2023 5:01 pm
OOC:
Does this figure look like those that threw magic at the Ents earlier? And is does it appear to be readying a spell to cast toward Khyree, Grekkor and the ship?
Jun 10, 2023 7:22 pm
OOC:
He does look like he’s about to cast a spell into the clearing. His orb emits electrical energy, so he probably is the spellcaster that sent the lightning at the ent. It does look like he is still is aiming to fire on the ents and not the ship.
Jun 11, 2023 2:21 am
Khyree grabs onto the wheel and focuses her energy into the connection. Her eyes are locked on the adversarial mage, casting imaginary daggers at the fiend. "Master!" She cries out. "The mage is targeting the poor Ents again!"
Jun 13, 2023 12:44 am
You grab the wheel; the glow of the helm subsides as you do; the ship instantly responds. It heaves and lifts off the forest floor. You see the shape of dragon wings extend off the port and starboard bows, appearing as a dim blue aura. The ship seems to let off a sigh of relief. Massive sail's raise made of the same blue spectral aura. Again you are not sure if the sight and sound is noticeable to you only, or to all around.

While the ship hovers a few feet off the ground, ready to respond to your direction, you see the levitating wizard figure-- who is off the starboard bow--push his orb forward. When he does, lightening flies from the orb in numerous directions. Many of ents are hit and wail in agony as their leaves, trunks, and limbs erupt in flame.

Just after the lightening blast from the orb, another blast, this one of acid, rises up from the undergrowth below the mage and envelopes him. The mage lets out an angry painful scream and falls from his levitating perch, disappearing into the forest cover. "Grekkor", you think to yourself, "his acid breath attack."
OOC:
The ship mechanics work like this (For now, I may modify this soon):
-----
1 Ki for up to a 500ft altitude (above land mass, not sea level).
-----
1 Ki for every 1 mile altitude (above sea level) thereafter.
-----
1 Ki to travel up to 100 miles (for simple flight)
(If the 100 miles is interrupted another Ki must be spent to travel up to another 100 miles.)
-----
1 Ki per fast-paced navigation (like in aerial combat situations. I'll elaborate this mechanic soon.)
-----
3 Ki to use the ship's dragon breath weapon, which is acid.
-----

Also, as it stands, Khyree must touch the helm to awaken the connection with the ship, but once Ki is spent and the connection is made, Khyree can be anywhere on the ship and the ship will respond to her. When the activities (that the spent Ki allowed for) are made, the ship will go dormant until more Ki is spent. Khyree must then touch the helm to reestablish her connection with the ship.

Without the need of any Ki, the ship can operate as a normal seafaring vessel in water. Of course, then the ship would need a proper crew and replaced sails to actually sail. But it could float as is.

Jun 13, 2023 8:40 pm
Holding tight to the wheel, Khyree calls out, "Master! Jump on!" She focuses as the information floods into her mind how to operate the amazing ship. She holds position, hovering the ship off the ground for a moment longer; waiting for Grekkor to appear.
Jun 14, 2023 2:55 am
With the wheel in hand you keep the ship hovering in position. Somehow you intuitively understand how to operate the vessel.

Just after you call out to Grekkor to jump on, a flash of bright electrical energy flares from the forest undergrowth (where the mage fell after Grekkor's acid breath attack). A few moments later you see rigging--that hangs off the starboard rail and is attached to a fallen crosstree brace--go taut as the wooden brace slides across the main deck and wedges snuggly between the ship's rails. You then hear Grekkor yell, "Go, go Khyree! I'm on!" You hear him, but you can't see him.
Jun 14, 2023 7:07 am
Wanting urgently to get away from the ground and hopefully cease the attacks on the Ents if there is not reason with the ship gone, Khyree focuses and the ship rises straight up until it reaches a cruising altitude of 500 ft.
Jun 14, 2023 11:37 am
Through your focus the ship rises up out of the clearing. It rocks back and forth as if the force that lifts it operates much like waves at sea. As the ship rocks to the starboard side you catch a sight of Grekkor holding on the rope as the ship lifts upward. He appears to be struggling.

Some flaming arrows fly just below the ship where Grekkor struggles to ascend the rope. A flaming arrow lodges into his side as he slowly climbs, igniting his cloak.

Hoping the ship doesn't plunge, Khyree rushes down the railings and reaches out to help Grekkor. "Here, Master! Take my hand! Quickly!"
Jun 18, 2023 6:06 pm
The ship stays stable when you let loose the helm. You can feel that your connection to the ship remains and your control of it stays intact.

When you call out to Grekkor he makes a greater effort to climb the rope high enough so you can reach his hand. When he does you grab his hand and pull him aboard the main deck. An arrow is lodged in his side, his cloak is engulfed in flame, and his body shows signs of being struck by lightning. You rip off his cloak and toss it over the side of the ship. Your master's form slumps to the deck as soon as you remove the burning cloak.

You notice that Grekkor's scales show a faint, lingering luminescence, traces of residual electricity flicker along them, their edges appear slightly singed, with small tendrils of smoke rising and dissipating into the air. Where lightning struck him most directly, there are marks left behind—a network of faint, intricate patterns, resemble lightning bolts frozen in time. You master doesn't look good.

There is shouting and human screams from below. It sounds as if the ents are fighting back the human intruders. The ship now hovers safely above the clearing out to range of the human's arrows.

Grekkor coughs and calls you in a weakened voice. "Khyree, I must tell you some things." He waits for you to come close, because he can't speak loudly. He continues, pausing occasionally throughout his story when his body erupts in convulsing pain, "Things...that I was not sure to be true...that I thought were perhaps just myths, have manifested their truth today. This ship...It does exist. It was created by the founder of our order, the great dragon Gradius--whose twin brother, the dragon Sekkor, was lost to the darkness in his exploration of the Underdark. But Gradius' exploration instead took him to uncharted lands of the south, discovering the Dragon Realm Portal. He founded our order, whose original purpose was to protect the Portal and channel its energy to benefit the world. Gradius promised his followers wisdom, focus, peace, and protection, teaching them how to tap into the Dragon Force. His brother, however, created an order of his own. Dark hearted followers of the Deep Dragon, Sekkor, were tasked by their master to find and annihilate those of our order, human and dragonborn alike, until no more remained. The mage I faced below was one such of Sekkor's followers along with other humans down there. They must have been searching for this ship."

Grekkor's body convulses again. He closes his eyes and breaths to regain command of his thoughts and body.

"Very shortly, you...Khyree will be the last of the followers of the Ascendant Dragon."

"It was believed that Gradius constructed the Dragon Ship to aid his followers in traveling between places of power and infused it with his own essence through a gem known as the Dragon Gem. It was believed that the Dragon Gem was a twin to another gem created by Sekkor...two dragon twins and two twin gems embedded with their makers' essence."
Jun 20, 2023 10:38 am
"Master..NO!" Khyree knows Grekkor's words of his own approaching end is true, but she still wants to deny it. "These terrible cultists of the dark dragon must be stopped. It is they who should be no more..."
Jun 22, 2023 4:56 am
"Yes Khyree it is they that should be stopped. They indeed have nearly accomplished their task of annihilating the Order of the Ascendant Dragon. But not fully. You are the last of our order in this realm. The Deep Dragon Cult must never discover the Dragon Realm Portal. I fear what should happen if they did. I suspect..." He coughs, "...that their search for this forgotten vessel is an attempt to locate that portal, as the ship is connected to its creator, Gradius. The Ascendant Dragon commands that portal and its influence on this realm."

Grekkor pauses. He closes his eyes and takes a heavy breath. His scales still flicker occasionally with sparks of electricity. He continues with his eyes closed,

"I feel the presence of our master here Khyree, maybe not fully here, but with this vessel still."

He opens his eyes.

"I can pass now, join with the Dragon, offer my Ki to this ship and our master. This will help you. You are chosen to command this vessel. Its fate...the fate of the Ascendant Dragon is in your hands now."
Jun 23, 2023 7:56 pm
"I can feel our master here too, Master Grekkor." She acknowledges and holds his hand. "I don't know if I can do this alone...again, but I will gives it my best. Promise."
Jun 25, 2023 4:49 am
The dragonborn monk's body convulses with pain, trembling as relentless agony courses through his veins. With each labored breath, the weight of the searing pain from the lightning strike and the flaming arrow wound seem to overtake him more.

Struggling to speak through clenched teeth, the monk's voice trembles with a mix of pain and determination. With weakened but resolute eyes, he locks gazes with you. Grekkor's voice, though strained, carries an undertone of unwavering conviction.

He says, "I know you will Khyree. You have great strength within you," he manages to say, each word an arduous effort. "I have witnessed your growth, your dedication. You carry the legacy of our teachings. Embrace your potential...embrace your best...you are ready."

With those last words Grekkor's life leaves his body. For a moment his form lies motionless and all seems silent. Then his body begins to glow, getting brighter each second. His glow is soon followed by the blue glow of the ship. The spectral sails and dragon wings are visible to you again. And you hear a distant unearthly dragon roar.

Then the glow fades. Nothing remains of Grekkor. The ship once again looks like a normal seafaring vessel--although it still hovers hundreds of feet above the clearing and the chaos below. And you still feel the connection to the ship, realizing it will respond to your will. But there is something different now. The connection is stronger than before and you can feel the energy of your master has combined with the ship.
OOC:
Grekkor had 9 unspent Ki when he passed. These have been transfered to the ship. Khyree may spend this pool of Ki to navigate the ship along with spending her own KI. The 9 Ki that Grekkor contributed to the ship are not replenishable. Once they are spent, they are gone.

Khyree felt the sudden rush of emotion come over her. She had long ago given up tears, but there they were again, filling her eyes and threatening to stream down her cheeks. She grabbed up Grekkor's cloak and held it close. The old dragonborn had been the only being that had ever shown her kindness. She would miss him dearly.

Alone again, save the lingering essence of her master and that of the great dragon in this ship, she got to her feet and ascended to the helm once more. She had never liked this accursed jungle. Now she had more reason to despise it. Focusing her Ki, Khyree turned the floating vessel and headed for the coast.
Jun 27, 2023 7:10 am
OOC:
With the current air speeds and weather, it will take 4 hours to make it to the coast. It will cost 1 Ki to travel to the coast (which is just about 100 miles away) if you keep at your current 500' elevation above land. If you wish to elevate higher it will cost another Ki. In either case let me know if you will use the ship's Ki reserve, spend your own Ki, or a combination. Remember that once you touch the helm and spend a Ki (which you have already done) you don't physically have to stay at the helm to navigate the ship. You can navigate the ship through your connection with it from anywhere on board. So you may explore the ship while you travel.
Jun 29, 2023 8:16 am
Khyree focuses the Ki within the ship and commands it to rise another five hundred feet, before it heads bearing for the coast.

With her course set, she begins an exploration of the vessel, beginning with the captain's cabin.

You enter the captain's cabin and are awestruck by a magnificent dragon statue, its imposing form crafted with remarkable attention to detail. The dragon's outstretched claws both hold items. In one claw, there is a lantern encasing gem that seems to swirl with red and blue energy as if the colors are are competing for superiority...or maybe trying to maintain a balance. It's hard to tell. In the other claw of the dragon statue, there rests an ornate scabbard that looks ready to receive and house its blade.

Carved into the base of the statue are writings in draconic form that say: "Bound by Blood, Forged by Fate, In Unity We Soar, Our Division Escape."

The cabin is otherwise in disarray. Dust, jungle snakes, webs and spiders have laid claim to this room. The webs and dust blow around as wind from elevated air currents blow in through broken window panes behind the statue.

Jul 5, 2023 9:06 pm
Khyree carefully clears a path across the cabin floor of spiders, snakes, and cobwebs until she can reach the statue. She stands and admires its artistic beauty and then picks up the scabbard. She has no sword herself. The only thing she does have that has a similar shape is the dagger talon dagger she has kept at her hips for years now. She chuckles to herself and, drawing the dagger, attempt to fit it into the mouth of the scabbard.
Jul 6, 2023 1:51 am
Making a path toward the statue, you kick at snakes--that fearfully slither away from you--and brush aside webs.

When you touch it and try to lift the scabbard from the statue's claw, the claw closes tightly around it. Suddenly the name of the scabbard rushes into your mind. It is the Soulbound Shealth. It tells you without words, without sound, that it waits only to house Reaver, which you seem now to know is the blade created by Sekkor, infused with his essence through his Dragon Gem embedded in the blade's pommel.

As the nature of the scabbard makes itself known to you, your mind gets flooded with many more images.

You see visions of a grand forge surrounded by intense heat and billowing flames in an obsidian fortress deep within subterranean depths. With skilled and precise movements, the dragon Sekkor forges Reaver there, its blade taking shape under the dragon's powerful claws.

The vision then focuses on the hilt of Reaver, where Sekkor embeds his dragon gem with a surge of raw energy. The gem radiates a blue and red swirling glow, pulsating with the flames of the forge.

The vision transitions and you see a dragonborn pirate captain; you somehow know his name is Ezber. He wields the blade as he boards a ship. The dragonborn's image soon morphs into a tabaxi warlock, also a pirate captain--you know he is Admiral. He waives Reaver and orders his crew to make haste. You somehow know he is the one who possesses Reaver now.

The vision shifts again and reveals a swirling vortex of darkness, a tear in the fabric of reality that exudes an aura of chaos and corruption. It is surrounded by an ominous mist; the air crackles around it with raw energy, and a sense of foreboding permeates the immediate vicinity. This, you somehow know to be the Portal to the Demon Realm.

https://i.imgur.com/fK9wMLx.jpg

Finally, the vision settles on the port city of Jahore at night, where Admiral is unconscious, shacked, and being carried into the shadows of a sewer tunnel by skulking armor clad humans and goblins.

After the vision subsides you slide your dagger into the Soulbound Sheath. It's not a good fit, but does slide in. Nothing else happens when it does.

Khyree pulls her dagger back from the sheath quickly and frowns. 'This sheath should not be aboard the ship. It is an artifact of the dark dragon.' Her brows furrow and she looks sternly at the dragon statue. "I don't want this here on the ship." She points at the sheath. "If you insist it remain, we have a problem you and I."

When you say those words out loud the gem inside the lantern in the statue's other claw begins to swirl and glow. You notice that the blue and red swirl looks identical to the gem on the pommel of the blade, Reaver, that you saw in the previous vision. The lantern, you suddenly know to be the Dragon Breath Lantern glows brightly and more visions flood your mind.

You see the dragon Gradius instructing followers as they construct a ship next to a large temple nested in the deep jungle. A dragon statue is brought to the ship. Gradius himself rests a lantern--housing a swirling gem--in one of the statue's claws. He then rests a empty scabbard in the other claw.

"When both gems are reunited here, we shall know the workings of the Deep Dragon," claims Gradius to his followers. "We may yet be able to turn my brother from his dark path."

The vision morphs and you see Gradius in the jungle enter a surreal layered portal cradled in jungle forest growth. This is the Dragon Realm Portal.

Khyree folds her arms beneath her breasts and stares at the dragon statue. "My path forward is my own and I do not share your optimism for redeeming an evil sibling. Neither mine nor yours."

"I plan to clear away this cabin of its layers of filth and age for my own. There is no room for the trappings of another here. Not the dark dragon, Sekkor's. Not the dragonborn cutthroat, Admr's. And..not the pirate, Admiral's."

You toss Grekkor's cloak over the dragon arm holding the scabbard. The glow of the gem in the lantern subsides.

As the next couple hours pass you search the ship and do your best to clear the captain's cabin. While clearing away webs and getting rid of snakes you manage to bring the quarters to some semblance of livable. You mange to seal broken window panes with canvas and adjust furniture to a usable state. There is a desk and cot in the quarters.

In the desk you find an old journal. You flip through it to find it is a captain's log. An early entry describe some visions similar to yours at the dragon statue. A later entry describes a vision of the dragonborn, Ezber. The previous captain describes seeing Ezber abandoning Sekkor's Cult when coming to distastefully understand the purpose for his dragon master's dealings with demons.

There are some entries describing some encounters the ship had. One such entry starts with:

Captain's Log: 21/52 on the Eve of Moor

As the chronicle of this venerable ship continues, I must recount the extraordinary circumstance that recently unfolded during my time as its captain. The Dragon Ship, infused with the essence of the dragon Gradius, has proves itself to be an instrument of great power.

In our most recent journey, we encountered a treacherous storm, the likes of which I had never witnessed before. Fierce swirling winds lashed against our sails, threatening to tear them apart. Lightning crackled through the sky, illuminating the raging seas below. It was a trial of endurance and skill that tested the mettle of everyone aboard.

But it was during the height of the storm that my moment of revelation occurred. The Dragon Ship, in its boundless connection to Gradius, harnessed the very essence of the storm. Lightning arced from its masts, guiding us safely through the tempestuous waters. The ship became an entity of raw power, resonating with the fury of the storm. Guided by this synergy, we navigated through treacherous skies.

Other similar entries of encounters relate more situations:

...A grand battle ensued as our paths converged. The Dragon Ship, guided by the essence of Gradius, transformed into a formidable force, radiating authority. The ship's dragon form evoked awe and fear in our adversaries, and its ethereal wings seemed to carry us effortlessly through.

The clash was fierce, our enemies' sending thundering forces at our vessel. The Dragon Ship weathered the onslaught with unwavering resilience, its dragon scales deflecting the energy. The ship itself became an instrument of retribution, retaliating with blasts of fire, tearing through the enemy like a dragon's breath. We fought with a ferocity inspired by the awe of our master's essence...

There is an entry where the former captain summarizes what he had come to understand about the ship. It is able to disguise itself, appearing as:
>a mundane seafaring vessel
>a misty cloud formation
>a shapeless form of raw energy
>an ethereal dragon shaped force.

Late entries describe the captain realizing that "the ship's connection to Gradius seems to be waning". Also, he relates that "the Deep Dragon Cult has nearly killed all of the Order of the Ascendant Dragon in their search for Gradius' Dragon Gem on board this ship".

In the last entry the captain says:

...with the my Master Gradius' influence fading and the Cult desperately searching, I must hide the the ship here in the jungle. The Ents have agreed to to keep it hidden and safe...

Other Areas of the ship include:
>Main Deck--There are signs that the deck was once also used as a open training area for martial arts practice and communal gatherings.
>Crew Quarters--The ship could house a crew of 15-20 if needed.
>Mess Hall--There are some weathered and broken long tables and benches and a galley area which is void of supplies.
>Storage Hold--This is mostly barren. Any barrels of foods and supplies are dried up and decayed.
>Observation Deck--The way up to this is in need of much repair.
OOC:
Note: It costs 2 Ki for Khyree to change the ship's appearance. No matter what form the ship takes on, its decks still can house people and cargo just the same. Some signs are visible to those onboard--like an ethereal glow, or cloudy mist--when the ship adopts different forms, but otherwise the ship appears to stay the same to those onboard. You may ask me to elaborate on anything in the captain's log.

As you are sorting through the ship, while on the main deck you notice a rope fastened to a rail (on the opposite side of the ship from where you pulled up Grekkor). That in itself is not odd, since there are a many ropes dangling off rails and haphazardly from masts and various pulleys. But in your keen investigation you notice that forest growth--that has taken over parts of the main deck--has been recently disturbed on the deck at the point where this particular rope, hanging over the side of the ship, is tied. It is subtle but noticeable. That realization keeps you alert.

As you continue scouring the ship your heightened awareness brings your attention to the occasional sound of muffled footsteps and patterns of dust moving where airflow has been disturbed by some movement that was not yours. You also catch the faint scent of ozone now and then.

OOOPS typed that wrong, but Khyree rolled a 15, so she succeeded in her intimidation.
As you verbally welcome your hidden stowaway's challenge, you are able to make out the Jungle Coast shore 1000 feet below. You spot a small fleet of six ships. Based on what Grekkor has described to you about the North, they appear from your elevation to be ships from the northern continent of Brun. Some of ships display colors that are the same red as the dress of the humans you encountered in the jungle.

Captors on the shore appear to be herding groups of people toward the ships. You see some glints of chains in the sunlight. One group being herded has the sparse barbarian dress of your people and your people's general build and hair color array. Also true to your people's form, you notice many are resisting as various struggles are slowing down the captors' effort of moving these captives toward the ships.

The smell of ozone suddenly becomes stronger. There is a crackle of electrical spark. Materializing before you is the the mage you saw hours ago levitating above the jungle clearing, the one your master Grekkor faced. As the mage appears, the Dragon Ship seems to rear in dislike of his presence. The mage must have let down some magic that shielded him from being detected by the ship.

In one hand, the mage holds the orb from before, electricity sparking around it, and in the other hand, he swings a chain made of glowing energy.

His eyes burn with obsessed intensity and he sneers at you.

Khyree will search the mage's body and make sure he's dead.

Once this is done, she focuses the ship's Ki and has it change appearance to a cloud floating in the sky.

She drags the mage's riffled corpse to the railing and tosses it overboard. She watches it splat into the water far below. Then, takes a better look at these six ships and the slavers trying to corral people into them.

If the orb is still rolling around on deck somewhere, she will pick it up and examine it.

You search the dead mage. All you find in his dark robes are some vials of black liquid, a satchel of spell components and a spell book. Around his neck, he wears a jagged amulet in the shape of a dragon's head crafted from obsidian.

https://i.imgur.com/KK2lmKn.png

You focus the ship's Ki and its appearance changes to cloud formations. To you the ship continues to feel as solid and tangible as it did before. Your only indication that it is disguised is the fact that a light cloudy mist covers the deck at your feet.

When you toss the corpse overboard, it falls for a while getting smaller and smaller until a you can just make out it crashing into the water below.

You focus on the shore and see that the captors below appear to still be corralling groups of chained humans toward the boats. Six boats are anchored near each other. Four of the boats have red sails, two are un marked, and one has black sails with and emblem on it very similar to the dead mage's amulet.

Some groups of captives are at the shore already and are being loaded onto small boats and rowed to the ships. Other groups are further away yet. You believe one of the further away groups to be your barbarian people. There are probably 50 or so captors on the shore herding four groups of captives. Each captive group has at least 20 people in it. You can't be sure how many people are on the boats.

You find the orb wedged between a barrel and a railing. When you pick it up, it looks mostly like a plain glass orb that easily fits in your hand due to its size. Examining it closely, you see a tiny nucleus of arcing of electricity in its center.

Putting the orb in her backpack along with the vials of black goo and the spell book, Khyree returns to the rails and tries to think what she wants to do next. She really wishes the energy she senses within the ship were such that she could possibly take down the ships of the slavers and their dark dragon cronies, but she is unsure of success in the matter. She would have the element of surprise on her side most likely, but the odds were fairly high against her.

Peering hard along the coast, she tries to identify the locale below.

This picture is the best I could do; its not 100% to scale. Khyree's ship is a bit higher up than the vantage point here--and more or less directly above the locale below her.

A - represents the group of about 20 captives that look like her people. They are being hearded by about ten captors.

B, C - represent the groups of captive getting closer to the loading boats. Both B and C are groups of about 20 captives being hearded by about 10 captors.

D - represents the group of about 20 captives that are being loaded onto boats and rowed to the ships--looks like toward the two unmarked ships. There's probably 20 or more captors loading people. Also, at letter D on the beach near the loading boats, Khyree can just make out a pile of bodies.

MORE SHIP MECHANICS (I included these in the thread you started)
For 3 Ki the ship can fire acid in a 120-foot line that is 20 feet wide. Each creature in that line must make a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw, taking 54 (12d8) acid damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

As far as attacking the ships below goes, the ships would have to make a saving roll of DC 18 to avoid being rendered useless, and they would sustain 12d8 damage.

By spending 3 Ki, you could do some fancy maneuvers that would possibly be able to cut a path that would allow the 120-foot line acid breath attack to hit all or most of the ships. The attack bonus for this roll would be Khyree's wisdom bonus +2(ship's bonus).

Though it is not within her power to take on the whole of the gathered armada and its manpower, Khyree focuses her energy on the dragon ship and directs it down, in a strafing run of the dark dragon's vessel and the other two slave ships, spraying acid over their sails, decks, and masts.

Focusing your Ki you urge the ship to dive. You stand on the bridge at the helm. The ship seems to come alive; you feel its energy surge. As the ship dives, the cloudy mist stirs at your feet and in your mind you can see the ships below as if you share the 'sight' of the dragon vessel. You guide the ship in its decent, aiming it toward a run meant to swoop over and attack just above the three ships closest to the shore.

When you get the ship close you swoop it upward and over your targets and the same time letting loose a blast of acid. You hear shouts and exclamations coming from the crows nests and decks below.

The crews of the ships scramble. Shouts and exclamations turn into cries of agony as the stream of acid rips across the vessels. The acid evaporates sails and burns holes in the ships decks. In the case an unmarked ship, its main mast is severed by the acid and it falls into the deck cracking its hull. The ship begins to sink and the other two are going no where any time soon.

As you swoop up toward a high altitude the Dragon Ship rears in satisfaction. One of the unaffected ships manages to fire off a balissta, but your ship moving quickly, is soon out of range; its cloud disguise makes it hard to pinpoint against the clouds above. The giant balissta bolt falls short into the water.

You notice that the excitement on the water caused the slave herding to be halted on the beach. Further, it looks like your barbarian people have taken the opportunity created by the distraction to come at their oppressors in full force.

The crater is high above the forest; only a few other nearby peaks are higher. The land around the crater continues a steep descending slope 800ft or so down to the jungle on one side and to the ocean on the other. The nearby peaks protrude out from the ocean.

It seems unlikely that any bands of humans like the slavers or even creatures such as centaurs could make their way up here very easily. The air is thinner but cool and comfortable. If any creature at all resides up here, it would be unlike anything you've encountered.

As peaceful as the area feels, something strikes you odd about the rock formation at the center. It's a bit different than the other rocks around the crater. There's a slight discoloration that doesn't match the other rocks. It also seems oddly symmetrical to you. As your ship comes around closer, you catch glimmers of light as the sun's light plays across the surface of the rocky peak. You wonder what could be catching the light that way. The glints almost seem metallic. At the origin of one glint, your keen senses notice what looks like, from this distance, to be a hairline crack that's unnaturally strait. It stretches completely over the entire formation. It almost seems like a seem.

Cloudy mist still lingers at your feet due to the ship's disguise.

Khyree eyes the spired formation warily, as she sets down the ship at the edge of the pool. She needs rest and recovery time and hopes that the crystal clear water will have time to settle so that she can possibly take aboard some for drinking at some point.

The sleep was needed and restful. When you wake you meditate, attuning to, focusing on, and absorbing the force of the Dragon. You invite its energy and you coax it into the reserve of the Dragon Ship as well.

But this time like never before, you felt you had to penetrate a veil to connect with the force. Much of your meditation in the past has been done in the presence of your master Grekkor, so at first you thought the veil may be due to Grekkor not being present to guide you as he did in the beginning or as he later meditated along side of you helping draw out the energy. But you are not so sure that is the reason. It felt as if the Dragon force had been scooped out of the area, taken, bottled up and you first had to penetrate the borders that confine it.

Khyree scans the city for the best area to dip the ship down long enough for her to debark and then have it vanish back into the sky. Her funds are meager, but she needs to resupply food if nothing else.
Sep 12, 2023 2:04 pm
OOC:
If Khyree waits until nightfall, she could probably bring the ship down anywhere. Otherwise, there are plenty of guard towers on the wall of this small city. A cloud formation resting down next to the city might spark some interest. There are some hills about a mile inland and a narrow river that meets them. Khyree could set the ship down behind the hills and likely not be noticed by the watch (In that case I would roll Perception +1 for them with a DC 20)
Sep 12, 2023 8:17 pm
Discovering the spot between hills on the narrow river, Khyree directs the dragon ship down. Then, as quick as she can get off the cloud-disguised vessel, can sends it back into the sky.
Sep 13, 2023 4:51 am
As you bring the ship down behind a hill, you get a good view of the hilly area. It's still very jungle-like here, but more open and less dense than the area where you evaded the centaurs into the clearing guarded by the ents and ultimately connected with the ship.

Looking back toward the coast you notice a strange structure near the river. It has a large pipe with steam coming from it. The city is about a half mile beyond that.

You set the ship down in the river, disembark, and send it back into the sky.
OOC:
The city is in the direction of the red arrow.

Time: early afternoon
Sep 13, 2023 9:31 pm
With the ship safely back in the clouds, Khyree glances at the odd smoking pipe stilling out of the building. A curious chimney perhaps. She shrugs and sets off on the road toward the city she saw along the coast.
Sep 14, 2023 4:21 am
You easily find and take the road, which basically follows along side the river until it eventually crosses it over a bridge. Over the bridge, the road splits from the river and follows a narrow inlet waterway. Soon you are close enough to the strange structure you saw landing the ship to get a good look at it.

It looks mostly human in design--not the tribal humans that you grew up with, but the type of humans who build cities, walls, and keeps and who are controlled by kings and queens.

But there are definitely some modifications that look just as strange up close as they did from the sky. These you are not convinced are human in design. There are smaller pipes beside the large smoking you noticed before. There are additions to the building of odd shapes as well. Also, a constant subdued hum comes from the structure. You also notice a thick cable attached to a round copper plate. The cable runs from the plate down into the ground.

You don't see anyone around the building.

https://i.imgur.com/4w88FTT.jpg
Sep 14, 2023 9:10 am
Khyree eyes the odd structure suspiciously and keeps on task to reach the city. She minds her own business and goes about her way.
Sep 17, 2023 3:04 am
After following the road for another quarter mile, Khyree rounds a bend around a hill and finally sees the walled city ahead. It appears to be surrounded by a wide waterway on all sides except on the side of the city that is ocean shore. The road bends and leads toward a large drawbridge with defense towers on all corners. The bridge is down. You can see a caravan of some sort heading toward it now. The caravan, which is between you and the bridge, is still a distance from the bridge. You yourself are about a quarter mile away from the bridge.
Sep 18, 2023 7:15 am
Khyree speeds up, as she tries to catch up to the caravan before it gets to the city bridge.
Sep 18, 2023 1:17 pm
As you get close to the caravan, you see that it consists of four carriages being driven by--the small 2-3ft tall frog-like--grippli people. The carriages, being pulled by huge beetle-like insects, look like they are filled mostly with goods heading to the city. Much of the wares looks like edible plants foraged from the jungle, perhaps also some medicinal plants. Two of the four carriages are covered: the one at the head of the caravan and the one you are nearing at the back. The last carriage is filled with massive 6 ft long leaves. A two-foot tall driver steers two large beetles from a small seat on the front of the carriage. Revealing the carriage's leafy jungle commodities, flaps on the back of the covered vehicle blow open and closed on the breeze that comes off the ocean.
Sep 19, 2023 8:27 pm
Khyree continues at her quickened jaunt to draw alongside the last carriage. She glances to her side and calls out the frog-person. "Hi. Can you understand me? What city is this we are headed towards?"
Sep 20, 2023 2:08 am
"Understand human me do, creeek," says the grippli driver, ending the phrase with an elongated high pitch guttural rasp. "City of Haila we go, creeek. Only human city for weeks' travel. Most humans from north world here, creeek. They know not jungle. We bring jungle things. Humans want grippli wares, creeek." The driver turns and gives you a good look. "You not north world. You jungle human?"
Sep 21, 2023 8:57 pm
"Haila. Thanks." Khyree acknowledges and nods to the grippli's summation of her origins. "Yes. Not from the north world. More west of the jungle though."
Sep 22, 2023 3:10 am
"Barbarian human you then." confirms the grippli merchant, satisfied with his conclusion. "Why you at edge of jungle city?, creeek."
Sep 22, 2023 10:20 pm
Khyree turns to the grippli merchant. "Supplies. I am running low on needed food stuffs and, like you mentioned, its the only human city in a week's journey. I hope I can find what I need with little to no trouble."
Sep 23, 2023 2:17 am
"By foot, carry you supplies. Strong barbarian you are, creeek."

You are not versed in the peculiar mannerism of grippli, but you do sense a bit of sarcasm in the driver's statement and if you didn't know better you would think there was a smirk on the grippli's wide maw.

"You take ride into city. Leaves big inside make good cover. Gate guards always curious, creeek."

Ahead the road turns to the left and you can see a drawbridge made of heavy timber and iron. It is a massive and impressive structure to find at the edge of the jungle. There is also a weathered stone building that appears to be a barracks near the bridge. The drawbridge is heavily guarded. You see armored guards, scanning the hills for any hint of danger, some look already alert to the approach of the caravan. Banners flutter in the wind.

The waters beneath the bridge are rough, like the waves of the crashing shore. The wide waterway running under the bridge wraps around the city.
Sep 23, 2023 7:30 pm
Khyree looks at the grippli merchant with a wry smile. "Could I? That would be great. I don't want to draw too much attention from guards and those whose aim would be to attack me or steal the few coins I have to buy goods."
Sep 24, 2023 4:32 am
The grippli gives an affirming nod and says no more. You can easily climb into the covered carriage and hide in the huge leaves within.
OOC:
If Khyree does hide in the carriage, you may make a stealth roll. Is there any other particular precautions she takes as the carriage makes it to the bridge?
Sep 25, 2023 9:25 pm
Khyree sneaks into the carriage at the merchant's permission and attempts to hide in the giant leaves, under the cover of the carriage.

You slip under the leaves. Hidden away as the caravan makes it the rest of the distance to the bridge, you feel the carriage come to a halt.

"That's good. Stay there," you make out a guard say at the head of the caravan. "Grippli. We've been informed that your last shipment was infested with insects. The problem still has not been eradicated in the city. How do we know you don't bring more trouble like that again?"

"Assured you be. Checked the goods and retrieved them from safe places we have, creeek." responds a merchant.

"Still, we are ordered by the Provost to inspect." returns the guard.

"Inspect if you must, creeek," agrees the grippli. "But touch you not. Jungle goods need care to handle. Fragile and sensitive they are, creeek. Your Provost not be happy if you damage goods."

You then hear the guard move toward the carriage and begin looking inside. It doesn’t sound like he is taking much time at each. Eventually he come to the one you are hiding in.

The guard moves the flap aside at the back of your carriage. He peers inside for a moment. He is about to finish his inspection when he lingers for a moment longer. You hold your breath, in case he noticed the leaves moving from your body expanding and contracting. He sniffs a few times and pulls his head out of the carriage.

"Driver. What does you load consist of?" he asks.

Your grippli acquaintance responds, "Jungle leaves, for medicine and writing. Fragile now they are. Treated they must be, creeek."

"Just the leaves here?" asks the guard skeptically.

"No bugs. Safe, like other carriages you searched." retorts the grippli.

The guard seems satified with the response and waves the caravan on. The carriage gets moving again. The upward slope and then decline over the bridge is bumpy. A few minutes after crossing the bridge you hear a gate being raised. The carriage continues. You hear the sounds of a city: some calls from human voices, carriages, horse hooves, dogs barking, a tower bell that rings three times.

Your carriage makes a turn to the left. Soon the sounds of the city are muffled. The carriage stops. It sounds like your driver leaps from his seat to the side of the carriage.
Sep 27, 2023 8:30 pm
Khyree cautiously peak out from amongst the giant leaves to see who or what may be within range to see her exiting the carriage before do so.
Sep 28, 2023 2:44 am
You cautiously peek out. And see that the caravan has pulled into a warehouse of sorts. The carriages are parked in horseshoe arrangement just beyond large doors in an spacious front entrance of this huge building. Two humans push the doors closed. The grippli merchants are moving about, some are unloading their wares. The two humans move to help them upload. These humans don't appear to be guards. Other grippli are tending to the beetles, feeding them leaves and giving them water.

As you try to make sense of what you see when you peek out, your grippli friend suddenly steps into your view. "Creeek...Big leaves I unload and you slip to cover," he quietly suggests. "Hide. Grippli leave and foremen humans head to station soon, creeek."

You can't see anything but the entrance space of the warehouse from you position, but you notice the air smells fresh like the jungle or a greenhouse, and also there is a different tint to the lighting outside the carriage; its not a natural light from windows, or firelight from lamps; its something else all together.
Sep 28, 2023 8:31 am
Khyree nods her understanding and prepares herself to move with the grippli merchant when he unloads some of his wares. She looks for a likely space to move into to hide while the rest of the unloading takes place, until the Humans depart the area.

You move with the grippli merchant as he unloads and are able to use his cover to slip out of the carriage undetected.

What you see as you look into the warehouse is something unfamiliar to you. Strange light emits from orbs. Cables hang all around connecting these orbs and other things in the warehouse. There's a low hum that reminds you of the hum you heard when you walked past that structure on you way to this city. The ceiling of this place seems to be made of blue energy, shining its pale light down on the plants and other jungle goods in storage. As stange as this space is to you, something about that blue energy does seems familiar; it somehow reminds you of the dragon force.

There are many places to hide in here, you just have to stealthily take your pick.
OOC:

Khyree is on the lookout for possible egresses from the warehouse not so open and easily spotted. She would also at least give a silent gesture of thanks to the Grippli merchant for helping her sneak through the guard checkpoint into the city.

There may be an exit of some sort at the back of the warehouse, you cannot tell. There is a second level made up of scaffolding. You see a few places that would be easy to climb to make it up there.

Shortly, the caravan unloads completely. The humans pass a cylinder of blue glowing energy to the grippli merchant at the lead carriage--it remind you of the blue cylinder in the gnome flying machine. Then the grippli fasten their beetles beasts and return to driving positions. The humans open the large warehouse front doors and the caravan begins to move.
OOC:
You want Khyree to do anything at the moment or wait for the humans to leave the entrance area?
Oct 1, 2023 12:51 am
OOC:
She'll just wait.
Oct 1, 2023 5:00 pm
The caravan pulls out. From your hidden vantage point you see the humans close the doors after the last carriage of the caravan exits. One pulls a lever or something similar. You then hear a mechanical hiss and the humming sound gets louder. You think you see the cables dangling around the warehouse jerk as you hear the sound of four hissing and groaning metallic clanks and wheezes secure the door; the reverberations echo through the warehouse. While the door mechanism operates and the cables hum more loudly, the blue energy ceiling seems to swirl a bit.

One human turns to the other, "I'll go out the back and head to the station. Don't worry I'll secure the back too. You gonna do the rounds here before leaving yourself?"
Oct 3, 2023 7:55 am
Khyree listens. She know she has to act now to get out the back before the guard gets there. She moves through the warehouse and heads for the back doors. This warehouse ordeal is becoming way more trouble than its worth to get into this city.
Oct 6, 2023 3:07 am
Ahead of the guard who you heard announce his intentions, you manage to sneak through the warehouse to the back. There, from nearby shadows you see a smaller--but thick and reinforced--door that looks to be the back way out. There is a lever on the wall next to the door that is pulled down. The lever is fastened to a metal plate that has a keyhole in its center. Near the lever a large key hangs on a rod.

The guards are still having some last words at the front of the warehouse.
Oct 6, 2023 7:36 am
Khyree cautiously touches the key. If nothing happens, she takes the key and inserts it into the keyhole. She turns the key and then pulls the level down.
Oct 6, 2023 2:27 pm
Nothing happens when you touch the key. When you pull the lever there is a mechanical hiss. The humming sound amplifies. The door releases with metallic clanks that sound through the warehouse.

You hear a guard exclaim. "What!? How? Check the back door!"

The door releases from its frame and you can see a beam of daylight shine through. You push the heavy door to open it wide enough and then slip through. Outside of the door you step onto a busy city street. A tailor displays wares, a cobbler makes repairs outside a workshop. Others walk down the street toward more workshops. City walls loom in the distance. You detect an ocean breeze. In various places down the street, cables--overgrown with jungle vegetation--connect structures.

No one seems to look up as you emerge through the door. Everyone appears occupied.

On the outside of the warehouse building, next to the door you came through there is another lever and a keyhole. You still hold the key.

Time: Mid Afternoon
Oct 6, 2023 9:07 pm
Khyree places the key back on the rod, moves through the open door, and closes it behind her. She hastily moves down the street to mingle in the crowd, looking for a tavern to have a drink and bite to eat, and a market to purchase supplies.
Oct 7, 2023 8:16 pm
Closing the warehouse's backdoor, you shift inconspicuously in to the crowd.

As you move down the street, you see that the people in this city are a mix of peoples from different lands. All look foreign to look.

You pass by a number of workshops and trades peoples' establishments including:
An Apothecary
A Blacksmith Shop
A Bakery
A Barber/Surgeon Service
An Alchemist Shop

Eventually the road widens into a square of sorts where there are carts selling poultry, eggs, grains, produce, spices, meats, and other provisions and goods.

"The Weathered Boot Inn" stands at the edge of this market square, its timber-frame is adorned with a worn sign depicting a faded ship.
Oct 10, 2023 8:27 am
Khyree takes note of location of the various carts of goods in the market square and heads towards the inn. She doesn't have much coin to spare, but would like to find something filling to eat and a drink before going about her shopping for supplies.
Oct 11, 2023 11:04 pm
As you push open the heavy wooden door of the The Weathered Boot Inn you hear a cacophony of sound. The dimly lit interior combines with thick smoky air. The mingling scents of burning jungle leaves (enjoyed by some patrons), exotic spices, roasted meats, and the sweet aroma of honeyed mead fills your nostrils.

Orb shaped lanterns connected by cables and suspended from wooden beams cast a soft, un-flickering light that illuminates worn wooden tables. The walls are adorned with various trinkets and artifacts from distant lands.

At the center of the tavern, a large fireplace crackles and snaps; its flames casts long shadows across the room. Patrons huddle around it, some sharing tales, others warming in silence. The bar, a massive jungle mahogany structure, is lined with bottles of various sizes, holding a diverse array of liquors foreign to you. There is a mahogany table in the center of the common area with a map carved into it.

The tavern's clientele is just as diverse as the city's population. There are even a few elves with graceful features that sip elixirs, their ears barely concealed by their flowing hair. Two dwarves with braided beards laughed uproariously while clicking tankards of ale. Some hooded figures whisper secrets in a corner, and humans at the bar engage in lively discussions that sound to be about the jungle and its mysteries.

As you make your way deeper into the tavern, you are met with only a few curious gazes, some patrons taking measure of you while others remain engaged and oblivious.

The bartender, a grizzled figure with scars on his face, nods in greeting, offering a welcoming smile. A server, wearing a vibrant, flowing outfit carries a tray of exotic dishes balanced gracefully on one hand and weaves through the crowd, expertly delivering orders to occupied patrons.

A tiny Grippli bard perches atop a sturdy wooden table, his emerald skin glistening under the soft light. He regales a party of sailors at the table with uproarious tales and witty jests in a guttural, croaking version of the common tounge. The bard accompanies his tales by skillfully interjecting sounds from an intricately crafted set of aquatic hand chimes perfectly suited to his webbed fingers, each note resonating with a silvery, otherworldly tone.

There’s one lone young human male sitting at a corner table. He’s eating a meal and looking like he’s trying to keep inconspicuous.
Oct 12, 2023 7:17 am
Khyree approaches the grizzled figure at the bar. "What do you have on the menu tonight? I'm looking for a good meal and a drink." She tells him.
Oct 13, 2023 2:41 am
"Hello. Haven't seen you in my inn before. Welcome. Hmm...let me see...tonight..." he looks up and thinks as he continues to wipe out some tankards resting on the bar. "...Tonight we have a hearty pottage of various meats, bread and house made cheese, fish-potato pie, and an assortment of edibles from the jungle foragers. Plenty to drink here too." he nods in the direction of the various exotic liquors behind him. "But if you want something more straight forward we have some ales, meads, and wine."
Oct 13, 2023 11:19 pm
"The pottage, bread, and cheese, with an ale, please." Khryee tells the barman and looks about for a place to sit.
Oct 14, 2023 8:00 pm
"Excellent choices. You won't be a bit disappointed. Let's see..." The innkeeper/bartender stares at the ceiling and does some quick math in his head. "That'll be 12 copper coins. Find a seat you like. I'll have Jayla bring your meal out to you."

The bar is built out from the center of the left wall of the room. Directly across from it, the fireplace is on the opposite wall. There's a swinging door off to one side of the bar. Judging by Jayla's activity with trays in hand, you presume it leads into the kitchen. On the other side of the bar is a dark narrow hallway.

Seats in the Tavern:
>There is an open seat at the bar where some humans discuss the dangers and mysteries of the jungle.

>There is a unoccupied small table top fixed to a barrel near the fireplace. Some patrons huddle around the fireplace sharing stories. They look mostly human, but there is a small one you guess to be a gnome.

>The grippli bard entertains on an table at the back corner of the tavern; in the opposite, somewhat shadowed, back corner there is an unoccupied table. This shadowed back area is also where the young human male eats alone at a table. His clothes are tattered and worn, his face is dirty. He doesn't appear to have any weapons.

>The cloaked figures sit in shadows on the opposite side of the tavern--the side with the door you came in. You notice they occasionally look up at the young male eating.

>There is a free table between the elf and dwarf parties' tables.

>No one sits at the large carved map table. There is a large candle chandelier hanging above it. The candles are not lit. Instead light in the room comes from the illuminated orbs hanging from the beams. The map table separates the fireplace and bar area from the back area where the grippli and young human are.
Oct 14, 2023 9:13 pm
Khyree takes the grizzled barman and slides 13 coppers across the bar to him. Then, moves over to sit at the map table to await Jayla with her food and to get some fresh eyes on the details of the map.
Oct 16, 2023 10:28 am
You sit down at the map table to see a map of what looks like trade routes to the northern continent on the Sea of Dread, the sea that this city and the jungle coast sits on. The protruding wooden carving is made to look like a parchment map. Islands, routes, and ports are carved and painted under a glossy finish.

https://i.imgur.com/3cCeML7.jpg

You are examining the map as Jayla floats over with your meal, balanced on a tray. She places it on the table at the edge of the map, trying to find the flattest spot. "Not many sit here...well, enjoy dear." She finds a spot flat enough not to spill your ale and starts to say, "If you need anyth..." before getting cut off by a loud dwarf calling across the room for more mead. She rushes off.

While continuing to study the map, you enjoy your meal and drink, which is rather tasty and refreshing. When you are nearly finished the young lad in the back of the tavern get's up and walks by you to leave. He makes quick involuntary eye contact with you giving you a faint nod but presses hurriedly by your table to the front door.

As you noticed before, he is tattered, dirty, and weaponless. You see that he has something clenched desperately in his hand as if to keep it concealed.

He hastens out of the front door. You see that the cloaked figures watch the boy leave. A moment after the boy does, the two of them get up and exit the front door.
Oct 18, 2023 7:49 am
Khyree finishes her meal and drink, then makes her way out of the inn and back onto the street. Where, she heads back toward the market area to begin buying supplies.
Oct 20, 2023 5:07 am
As you get up and move to the tavern's exit, Jayla rushes by you with another tray in hand. "Bye dearie," she says just as you open the front door.

On the way back to the market, you walk by an alley and catch a glimpse down the narrow passage of the two cloaked figures beating down the young lad who walked by your table in the tavern. One hits the boy with a quarterstaff; the other readies a narrow mace. The weaponless boy doesn't stand a chance if left alone against the onslaught.
Oct 21, 2023 7:37 pm
Certainly not swayed to assist the dirty boy against the two men, Khyree stops in her tracks upon seeing the situation and calls down the alley. "What did the boy do to deserve this?"

Having seen the boy clutching something in his hands, she could easily believe that he was a common thief and she has no sympathy for thieves...or bullies.
Oct 21, 2023 11:22 pm
The cloaked figure with the mace looks up when you speak and sharply replies, "This does not concern you! Begone wretch!"

The other cloaked figure now searching the fallen boy exclaims in a hissing female voice, "He has nothing! This is not the boy."

"Just finish the useless urchin then,"
replies the other. "and let us move on from here to continue our search."
Oct 24, 2023 7:15 am

Before the loud-mouth mace wielder can even know what hits him, Khyree's quarterstaff takes the wind from him. Then her spinning kick takes his life. Khyree's fist to the other's chest sends the cloaked figure flying backward, dropping the staff and stumbling to the ground, dazed and winded.

The boy, frightened and unable to stand, uses his arms and legs to hastily shuffle backward on his bottom to retreat from the fight. He backs up as far as he can until he is against an alley wall.

As you lunge in for a another wave of lethal blows, the figure looks up from the ground, with a feverish glint of ecstasy, and hisses, "Sekkor will deliver me."

Your staff cuts the cloaked figure's last syllable short as it cracks the figure's jaw. Your kick that immediately follows collapses the figure's rib cage. After a wheezing last breath, the figure lies motionless.

The frightened boy cringes against the wall and looks at you with uncertainty.

As Khyree continues down the alley in the opposite direction she came in it, the boy calls out, "Wait. Can you help me? I don't know how to do it myself." His desperate plea is made with a voice about to break into tears.
Oct 30, 2023 10:29 pm
Khyree waves the boy on. "Keep up. Neither of us wants to get caught in this alley right now." As he moves closer, she asks, "Do what yourself, exactly?"

Upon your words, the boy forces himself to get up, wincing at the pain of the wounds inflicted on him, he moves hurriedly. Limping the distance, he rushes to a pile of garbage and broken barrels on the other side of the alley and picks up something from the ground in the mess.

He then hurries the best he can to keep up with you. When he gets close enough you can see blood on his lips when he says in a desperate tone, "I have to bring this amulet to a far away place. It’s called…Elegy…it’s an island. Evil people like those you saved me from took my family and others. They used this amulet to torture their minds. My father said it was made by demons. He took it from them and hid me with it away from them. He said to bring it to Lady Oceana when it was safe." His voice shakes and he fights tears. "They took my father and mother! They’re gone…only Lady Oceana can find them."
Nov 1, 2023 1:50 am
Khryee squints as the boy brings out the amulet he says was made by demons. She sighs and looks at the boy. "I need to purchase supplies for travel and get out of this city as quickly as I arrived. We can talk about this more and this Elegy once we're clear of this place."
Nov 1, 2023 4:25 am
Upon your words, the boy forces himself to get a hold of his emotions and he focuses his energy on quietly keeping up to you as the two of you hastily move through the alley in the opposite direction you entered it.

The late afternoon sun has already passed over the narrow opening between the tall buildings of this alleyway, so it is shadowed and dismal here. But soon the alley opens to a wider road with more light. On the wider road there is little activity here beyond a stray cat darting behind a barrel, the splash of a pan being poured out onto the street from a upper story window, and a tapestry being beaten against the wall from another upper story window. Your sense of direction tells you that you could make a turn down another alley and cut through to the market area.

Upon cutting through the alley, you come out near the Barber/Surgeon Service and Alchemist Shop. You make a turn onto the main road that widens into a market square where the many carts and stalls are set up with food, provisions, and other goods.

There's even more of mosaic of sights, sounds, and smells at this hour than when you first passed through earlier. The market place of this walled port city on the edge of the jungle seems to be a bustling hub of commerce. Stalls now line the street, adorned with brightly colored awnings that provide shade from late afternoon sun. As you walk into the market, the boy--still limping--keeps close to you.

The aroma of exotic spices and tropical fruits mingles with the salty tang of the nearby sea. Vendors look mostly like human merchants from the north to you, but their wares include items crafted from rare materials found deep within the jungle. A nimble grippli, hops between a couple stalls, describing a collection of herbs and potions to onlookers. Even a centaur trots gracefully through the throngs of people, displaying finely wrought armor and weapons. There are a couple resourceful gnomes, displaying their inventions and finely crafted tools. They also sell cylinders of blue energy similar to the one you saw on the gnome flying machine as well as the cylinder passed to the grippli merchants in the warehouse.

Merchants mostly haggle in the common tongue, but occasionally you pick up dialects of desert and jungle tribes. The air is thick with the sound of negotiations. You hear traders from the north continent regale their southern counterparts with stories of sophisticated city life and technological marvels, while the southern inhabitants share folklore of ancient spirits and natural wonders hidden within the dense jungles.

The market's energy is amplified by the presence of various entertainment. Acrobats and fire dancers showcase their talents to captivate the audience and encourage their flow of coins. The rhythmic beats of tribal drums and the haunting melodies of indigenous wind instruments create a mesmerizing background of musical sound.

Beyond the market, the walled city's architecture reflects what you imagine to be northern continent craftsmanship, with intricately carved wooden facades and sturdy stone structures. Guard towers positioned at strategic points along the walls reveals that this city relies on ever-present security and that the dangers of the jungle lurking beyond the city's borders remain foreign to those who rule here.

You try to stay alert...

Khyree is looking mostly for food stuffs at this point her rations aren't going to hold out too much longer. That's about all she can afford right now. Most of the materials for repairs to the ship are going to be too pricey or impossible to do with the situation being what it is.

You zone into an area of the market where carts and stalls display food provisions.

Making your way to one of the stalls labeled Gideon's Goods, you see an arrangement of preserved foods meant for long storing, such as on a ship. There's salted and cured meats, dried lentils, dried fruit, nuts and various seeds, hardtack, pickled vegetables, some different grains, salt for preserving, and other provisions.

The boy stays close by you. Next to Gideon's Goods there is a cart loaded with fresh produce, jungle mushrooms, and breads. Its merchant is currently helping others. Between the two merchant stations are a couple barrels. The boy stands near them.

You hear the vendor address a customer who pushes away cart loaded with his goods. He says, "Remember my name, Gideon Saltwright, next time you make port here in Haila." The merchant is a sturdy and weathered middle-aged man. His calloused hands bear the marks of meticulous work. He wears a salt-streaked apron and a old sailor's hat.

As you examine Gideon's wares, you become aware of distant shouts. "Halt! Stop right there!"

When you look in the direction of the sound you notice an agile young man further away down the market square dodging between stalls and weaving through startled onlookers as he evades pursuing city guards. His maneuvers are accompanied by the occasional crash of overturned wares--that cause his chasers to reroute--and the startled cries of vendors hastily securing their stalls. The evading man ducks behind a stall in the distance and disappears from your sight. The guards continue on in their pursuit.
Nov 3, 2023 10:37 pm
Khyree looks through the offerings that Mr. Saltwright has on display and chooses food stuffs amounting to nearly eight gold pieces. She hands him the coins and begins to gather up the things she has purchased.
Nov 4, 2023 3:01 am
You hand the merchant 8 gold coins and start to gather the items when he says, "Let me give you a sack for all that." He starts to place the food stuffs you collected into a canvas bag with a shoulder strap. "This way it'll be easier to carry." He quickly gets the goods in and lifts the bag to judge its weight. "Not bad, I'd say about 15 lbs. This will keep you and your boy going for at least two weeks."

As Gideon tests the bag's weight you notice the young man (who disappeared from your sight earlier) stealthily slip out from behind the Gideon's Goods stall. He moves toward and crouches between the barrels near the boy. The boy notices him too. The man looks at the boy and places a finger lightly against his lips, silently asking to keep his presence secret. He then gives a gentle, yet mischievous curve of the lips with one corner slightly lifted in a sly manner.

The guards are getting closer to this stall. They are only two stalls back when you here one call out, "Come out you thieving mechanic! You don't really think you can desert your work unannounced and run off with things that don't belong to you, do you? Come, come, you have a date with the Warden."
Nov 4, 2023 1:15 pm
Khyree shoves as much of the bag's contents into her backpack as she can fit, thanks the merchant and moves in the general direction of the gate she entered into the city, wanting to get out of Haila before nightfall and back aboard ship soon after that.
Nov 9, 2023 4:08 am
With her backpack stuffed full of provisions and after thanking the merchant, Khyree turns and starts to move away from the stall in the direction of the city gate. Not more than moment after she does so, she hears the startled voice of the boy who had been following her closely. The voice sounds muffled and panicked and not right behind her.

A quick glance back toward Gideon's stall reveals the boy being dragged behind another stall by a dark cloaked figure. The boy's hand is still clutching the concealed amulet tightly. The abductor muffles the boy's mouth with one arm that also holds a curved blade resembling the shape of a dragon's tooth.

It happens quickly. The busy shoppers and merchants don't seem to notice, nor do the guards rapidly approaching the area in search of the other young man who evaded them. In fact, that man is the only one beside you who notices the boy's abduction. The young man stands up from hiding between the barrels and pulls a dagger from his belt. As he does, an approaching guard yells, "There he is!!"

ignoring the guards, the young man hurls his dagger at the boy's snatcher. The dagger lodges in the dark cloaked figure's neck. The man growls and lets loose of the boy.

"Run boy, run!" says the young man, and the boy does not hesitate but runs to catch up with you.
Nov 9, 2023 7:58 pm
Khyree gives the young man a nod and keeps moving away from the scene with the boy close behind.
Nov 10, 2023 3:23 am
The commotion grows behind you as you keep moving; the guards shout more. By the sound of it, the young man managed to elude them once again.

You hustle out of the market area; the boy seems to be keeping up with you. Eventually the street leads to the area where you exited the back of warehouse (which is now on your right). Just past the warehouse is a large stone archway that arches over the end of this street. It appears open to a main city road; you figure its the same road that the Grippli caravan came in on before turning into the front of the warehouse.

The archway is guarded by two armed guards standing on either side of the arch. And beyond the archway you can see other guards riding past on the main road, heading in the direction of the city gate.

OOC:
Does it seem like the watch and guards are stopping and hassling people or just going about their jobs?
Nov 12, 2023 11:05 pm
OOC:
Good question. Here is something Khyree sees that may answer that.
While you ponder the purpose of the guards stationed at the archway a cart turns into the arch from the main road.

"Stop!" says a guard as the two step away from the wall into the cart's path. You can make out one guard asking, "What is your business down this street?" He waits for a response from the driver, which you cannot hear. "Late to market?" He waves to the other guard, who peers into and examines the contents of the cart. The examining guard nods. "Okay, go ahead," says the commanding guard. The cart driver urges the cart forward, heading through the arch in the direction of the market.

As that incident is occurring, you also notice the young man from the market shimmy over the edge of a roof on this narrow city street to your right. He carefully slips down on top of a second floor balcony awning and disappears. A moment later--before the cart has passed by you--he pokes his head out over the awning and whispers--loudly, "Psst, hey, you better have a good reason to be going that way if you’re thinking about walking past those guards. I suggest you don't. Safer moving around up here."
Nov 14, 2023 8:28 am
"I do have a good reason." Khyree replies back. "I want to get out of this damn city."
Nov 15, 2023 3:54 am
"Then we have that in common. You may have noticed already, but I kinda urgently gotta get out of this town." he says, still poking his head over the awning. "My guess is you're not from this city or the jungle out there and you got a boat stashed up the coast."

He then--in a swift stealthy motion--flips himself around, shimmies off the awning onto the balcony below it, hops over the rail, and then hangs from it for a moment, before dropping onto to the street not far from you. Crouching behind a weathered wooden stall behind the warehouse, he looks to make sure the guards at the arch did not notice him before he continues, "I'm pretty handy and know my way around a boat. And more importantly I know a discrete way out of these city walls."

Nov 16, 2023 10:36 am
"I am all for discreet." Khryee replies to the man. "Get us out of this city and we can talk about the boat once we're safely out of here."
Nov 17, 2023 12:47 am
The man nods to you and kneels down. "Get on boy." He says, "And hold on tight."

As the boy--still tightly clutching the amulet--gets on the young man's back wrapping his arms around the man's neck, the merchant cart fully passes by on the street. The man stays low behind the stall for a moment.

"It's, Rowan, Rowan Kael. Here goes our discrete exit."

With the boy on his back, Rowan, keeps low and moves to a shadowed warehouse wall. The nimble man uses vine covered drain pipes, decorative stonework, and stone sills to make a stealthy ascension up the warehouse toward its roof.
Nov 17, 2023 10:09 am
Khyree follows Rowan's lead and climbs up after him. "Khyree. Khyree Vadis." She says by way of quick introduction.
Nov 17, 2023 7:05 pm
You easily follow Rowan to the roof of the warehouse.

What you see on the roof is quite amazing. The blue energy ceiling dome you saw inside the warehouse now makes a breathtaking canopy roof of swirling force. At the center of the roof juts out a pole. Attached to the pole is a wide cable that angles downward off the city wall side of the warehouse.

Rowan does not step on the blue dome but keeps to the stone sill on the edge of the roof. He pauses and rustles through his bag as he explains, "They don’t guard the energy hubs because they don’t think anyone can get near them. But I’ve designed a few things that allow me to do just that."

He takes a pair of identical odd contraptions from his bag and clips them to the bottom of his boots. They have curved metal posts with small round ends that contact the roof sill instead of the bottom of his boots. A mesh of some material you can’t pinpoint connects the posts.

He takes out another pair and hands them to you. He also takes out two straps that are made of a mesh similar to the mesh on the boot clips.

"With these we can walk up there to that post and use the straps to slide down to the underground tunnel that the energy comes into the city on."

Oddly the energy on the roof doesn’t seem at all dangerous to you, in fact it feels familiar, comfortable. You notice that the blue energy nearest to you seems to subtly respond to any small movement you make. It swirls in response to you. Rowan, proud of his invention, doesn’t even seem to notice.
Nov 17, 2023 11:32 pm
Khyree slips on the footwear devices and straps them onto her feet. She resists the urge to reach out and touch the familiar surge of blue energy and nods when she is ready. "All ready..."
Nov 18, 2023 4:48 am
"Great. Let's do this," says Rowan. "Don't let go kid," he says to the boy.

He steps onto the blue dome. It ripples a bit as if it is water, but the round ends of his footwear devices barely sink into the blue energy. He walks up toward the pole in the center of the blue dome.

With your first step, the blue energy not only ripples but swirls under your feet obscuring the contents of the warehouse below that before stepping you could vaguely make out through the translucent blue dome. As you continue making steps the energy begins to rise up and circle you, at first just your legs, then up to your waist, finally around your chest. You know this force. It is the dragon force. It surrounds you and embraces you, enhancing your focus and Ki.

The force offers you strength by sacrificing some of itself. But something about it troubles you. It also feels stretched, trapped, and imprisoned. You feel like it swirls around you in attempt to ask for your help.

"How did you...What was that!?" asks a stupefied Rowan when you make it to the pole and the energy subsides from circling around you.

Still astonished Rowan says, "I will surely like to hear that. Let's get a move on it then." He makes sure the boy is secure. "Hold on," he says to the boy. Then he flips his mesh strap over the cable, grabs the two ends of the strap with both hands and slides down the cable toward the stone structure-just inside city wall-that the cable is attached to.

He makes it down the cable and drops onto the top of the stone structure. The structure has an opening on top of it that the cable goes into. The opening is wide enough for a human to enter and climb down.

"Coming?" Rowan calls up to you, somewhat subdued, as he is trying to be discreet.

From the top of the warehouse you see the sun is low in the sky on your right to the west.

When you make it across, Rowan helps the boy down off his back. He points at the shaft at everyone's feet and says, "You're gonna have to climb down yourself kid. There's not enough space for both of us climbing together, because we have to stay to the side the cable is not on. We can't touch the cable." He looks at you, "Well...I know I can't touch the cable anyway...after what I saw on the roof I'm so not sure what you two can touch or can't touch."

He notices that the boy clutches something in his hand. "You're gonna need both hands kid." The boy doesn't say anything, but looks reluctant to loosen his grip on the item he protects.

What's left of the daytime sunlight shines a bit into the shaft and you see the fat cable disappear below as the shaft bends. It looks like about 40' down the shaft turns and heads under the city wall.

The boy looks at his hand, then back at you. Then his gaze flickers between his hand and the escape route. His internal struggle is evident, but he silently nods, looks at you, and opens his hand.

The boy watches you place the amulet carefully in your pouch. You can see in his face that his internal struggle is conquered as he puts his full trust...and hope in you.

Rowan already has descended into the opening using the narrow spiked brackets and thin rails opposite the fat cable as footholds and handholds. "Do as I do," he says mostly to the boy. The boy breathes with resolve and follows Rowan's lead.
