OOC:
Spoke too soon!

Martha has now lost 9 sanity points in one day, 1/5 of her starting Sanity, meaning she has hit Indefinite Insanity.

With Temp Insanity, the character gets an INT test to try to avoid the effects but not so with Indefinite.

As with both types of Insanity, the investigator initially suffers a Bout of Madness, lasting 1d10 rounds. I'll roll below for the effects:
OOC:
Martha suffers from Mysophobia - Fear of Dirt or Contamination.

The initial 6 rounds will reflect and extreme reaction to this, then there is an underlying insanity that lasts indefinitely or until cured.

Go ahead and describe Martha's reaction.

Rolls

Bout - (1d10)

(9) = 9

Rounds - (1d10)

(6) = 6

Phobia - (1d100)

(62) = 62

Oh god, get away Martha says while putting her feet up in the chair and locking her arms around her legs. You are so dirty. she looks around. Everything in the place is filthy, oh god, I can’t get away from it her eyes well with tears.

Has Samuel tended to her wounds?

I think at this point, Sam is still in the cellar, reluctant to leave Calvin alone.

Jeffrey, your psychoanalysis might be helpful now!

Martha, you’ve had quite a bit of stress to your parasympathetic nervous system. It follows that your brain is sending these alarm signals. Don’t forget to breathe and let it pass. Imagine that you are in a boat, floating in a river and the trees on the shore are passing. Let them pass by…. Let them pass….
Dr. Shepard makes his voice slow and melodic to help induce a state of near hypnosis.
OOC:
Oops. Wrong methodology

OOC:
You could try harder and push it, but risk further damage. Or drop a ton of luck, if you really want to.

The good doctor does not tempt fate. A person’s path is their own. He might try again after she calms down, but for now he stays quiet and guarded.

Reggie paces while Dr. Shepard tries to calm Martha down. He says, "We need to get her to a hospital. At the very least, her wounds need to be cleaned up."

With the creature safely tethered to its prison, you emerge from the cellar. With the evidence you gathered, including the rounded piece of bones that turns out to be a piece of Rose's skull, and the sigil, it casts doubt on the case against Arthur Blackwood. The bones found in the cellar show signs of an animal attack and the sigil itself suggests a third party involved, perhaps cultists.

None of you leave that place unscathed and for some the scars last for years and your eyes have been opened to a deeper understanding of the world around you.
Rewards:

Finding the skull +1d4 sanity
Trapping the creature +1d6 sanity

You can also roll against each skills successfully used. If you roll over, gain 1d10

Calvin - Occult
Spot Hidden
English Language

Reggie - Spot Hidden

Martha - Brawl

Samuel - First Aid

Jeffrey - Medicine

Also, Martha has gained 5 Cthulhu Mythos points, as entering a Bout of Madness for the first time grants insight to the world beyond.

Oh wow! That was so cool! I really appreciate the game and getting to play with all of you! Thanks for a great time!

You’re welcome. Feel free to make your improvement rolls here, Calvin might have more tales to tell.

Also, as I run these one shots for the Cult of Chaos, I welcome any feedback of your experience. Did you enjoy it? Would you play CoC again?

OOC:
So it’s done then? I was so invested in it that I had to play my character SO differently than I would play any fantasy PC. It was a good struggle to not always do the "right thing" or "heroic thing". I learned much as a big fan of RPGs. And, for my first time playing in the Cthulhu mythos, you ran a fantastic game! Your gentle nudging was never railroading. Choice always felt alive…. as did consequence :-/ ;)
OOC:
So, yes, I’ll play CoC again.

I loved Jeffrey’s quiet narration from the safety of the cabin above. Note doing the heroic thing usually ends in character death or madness, or both!

I've got mixed feelings. It was great sometimes; sometimes it wasn't. I felt like it was the first day of swimming lessons, and we were unceremoniously dumped into the deep end and told to start swimming.

I'm surprised that it ended quite so suddenly. I was preparing for our next course of action, but we were, in fact, done.

I appreciate the opportunity to play CoC, but I'm not sure that it's a fit for me.

The one shots are very short and usually consist of a little more research first than on this scenario. I personally prefer longer form campaigns but the thing about CoC is that encounters usually end in death or madness so avoiding direct combat is always the best solution. I’m glad you stuck around and have it your best shot.

Yeah, I get that from reading the stories. The beast in the cellar forced (some of) us into combat when it went after Martha and blocked our escape. It is what it is. Fortunately, Calvin figured out what to do.
Jul 4, 2023 5:58 pm
Incidentally, it never came into play, but Dr Jeffrey is also a distant descendant of the Blackwood line. Had he entered the cellar fully, there might have been a different ending!
