Three days ago, you left the village Lingmell behind. The villagers were friendly enough – once they saw you had coin to spend – however they knew nothing of dwarves or Mirn Dural. But as soon as they set eyes upon it, Sen Malor and Dalomdûmir recognise the lone peak rising from the empty plains beyond as the mountain from their visions.

One day ago, you passed the scorched and broken ruins of a farming hamlet. The damage seems months or years old and any tracks had long faded.

You have climbed a steep, narrow road that runs back and forth across the mountainside. As the road winds around, you can see a thin spire of smoke rise from some unseen point high on the mountain.

Further along the road, in a bare shoulder of rock, stands a great door of dwarven make.

As dwarves, you are aware that Mirn Dural very likely has more than one entrance – however you do not know where any others might be! Dwarves hide their secrets with great cunning.

The mountain door.

At the head of the party a somewhat diminutive dwarf wearing dull earthy toned clothes and a close cropped beard, lead the march up to the door, his pack bulged with tools and gear but he carried it all like a professional. Ulrich also wore a smile at the sight of the stone door and he quickly approached it.

"Well I'll be a goblins uncle. A door lads! This has to be the place, no question bout it!"
OOC:
Ulrich is going to start investigating the door, checking for traps, hidden mechanisms, locks, etc.

As Ulrich gets closer to the door, he can see it is slightly ajar and looks like it could be pushed open. There is no light or movement visible through the crack.

Faint runes in ancient dwarf-tongue, heavily weathered, proclaim the realm of Mirn Dural.

Ulrich cannot find any active traps or mechanisms on the door itself, but does spot two concealed arrow-slits high on the wall, one ether side of the door. In the old days dwarven archers would have used these to defend the entrance.

Ghardak steps forward and bows to the door.

"We come to return this place to the dwarves. May we rid it of the creatures that have claimed it as their own," the stony dwarf says. Ghardak checks that there is no one aiming at them through the arrow slits.

Ghardak's keen eyes peer into the darkness behind the arrow-slits. There is no movement nor glint of metal. The stony dwarf feels sure that no-one is aiming at the dwarves before the door.

Gyrmmal looks at the door in awe. The construction is magnificent, as all dwarven structures are.

We found it. he says. Then after a moment I guess we can go in

Gromli grunts, "At last." For this dwarf, being here is a childhood dream come true.

"The door and its surroundings match the description passed down for generations. 'Woe be to any who dare desecrate Mirn Dural' is what our high priest used to say." Gromli looks for any signs of additions or damage to the immediate area.
OOC:
Using this ability: As expert miners, dwarves have a 2-in-6 chance of being able to detect new construction, sliding walls, or sloping passages when searching.

The wizened dwarf looks dubiously at the door. Though, he looked at most things either dubiously or disdainfully. He chews absent-mindedly on some sort of dried root vegetable. "It would be wise to find another entrance. At the very least, we would have an escape. It may not be our way, but sideways is a good way."
Jun 20, 2023 6:25 pm
Ulrich slyly peaks his head through the ajar door and gestures for the others excitedly.

"Ain't no traps or defenses here to bother with and shes wide open and inviting. Looking for another door might be more trouble than the effort as well. Its bound to be hidden and I don't feel so inclined to traipse about this cliffside all night."
Jun 20, 2023 10:07 pm
"I don't think one would be so easily found, and not from this direction. Maybe the skinnier ones can squeeze through the arrow slits," Ghardak says. He prepares to go in, also attempting to detect anything untoward like Gromli is doing.

Dalo tucks the rest of the vegetable inside his beard, held in place by a stout copper ring. "So long as you hear my council, I will follow."

Standing towards the rear of the party, Sen nods. "Have faith. The Maker will keep the stout of heart. Let us not dally at the doorway. Onward to glory my friends!"
OOC:
Sen has the following spells prepared:
1st: Cure Light Wounds, Light
2nd: Bless

Gromli cannot find any signs of damage other than the wear of many years. Nor is there any sign of new construction, which he believes would easily stand out given the great skill the door was made with.

Gyrmmal, too, notices the craftsmanship as the heavy door moves easily beneath his hand.

It opens into a large hall. Gyrmmal is standing on a narrow ledge overlooking a deep, dark crevasse that cuts the room in two, completely obstructing passage to the opposite side. The broken beginning of a great stone bridge can be seen. This must have been a last line of defense for the dwarves of Mirn Dural.

A dangerous-looking rope bridge, frayed and thin, spans the gap. Not dwarf-work; no dwarf would be satisfied with such rickety construction.

Water gurgles and rushes somewhere far below.

On the far side of the chasm two copper braziers burn brightly. By their light Gyrmmal can see two humanoid shapes. They appear to be gesturing and talking to each other with raised voices, but he cannot make out what is said. They don't appear to have noticed Gyrmmal.

The time is early afternoon.
The chasm is about 30 feet across. The bridge looks like it could only be crossed slowly and carefully.

Gyrmmal turns around and takes a few steps back towards the group so he is not directly in the doorways

looks like there are two creatures having an argument in there. I got a lantern we can use. Not sure if we want to alert them though

"I can try and get a closer look, but me eyes ain't the keenest. A bit of light would be right welcome." Ulrich lowered himself into a half crouch and moved quietly towards the bridge in the hopes of getting a better look at whatever was on the otherside. His hand gripped the handle of his small axe as he waded through the darkness.
Jun 21, 2023 1:43 pm
Ulrich creeps through the shadows to the edge of the bridge, but without a light source or getting closer, he cannot see any more than Gyrmmal did.

He does notice, however, that the voices are human.
