Three days ago, you left the village Lingmell behind. The villagers were friendly enough – once they saw you had coin to spend – however they knew nothing of dwarves or Mirn Dural. But as soon as they set eyes upon it, Sen Malor and Dalomdûmir recognise the lone peak rising from the empty plains beyond as the mountain from their visions.

One day ago, you passed the scorched and broken ruins of a farming hamlet. The damage seems months or years old and any tracks had long faded.

You have climbed a steep, narrow road that runs back and forth across the mountainside. As the road winds around, you can see a thin spire of smoke rise from some unseen point high on the mountain.

Further along the road, in a bare shoulder of rock, stands a great door of dwarven make.

As dwarves, you are aware that Mirn Dural very likely has more than one entrance – however you do not know where any others might be! Dwarves hide their secrets with great cunning.

The mountain door.
Jun 20, 2023 9:20 am
At the head of the party a somewhat diminutive dwarf wearing dull earthy toned clothes and a close cropped beard, lead the march up to the door, his pack bulged with tools and gear but he carried it all like a professional. Ulrich also wore a smile at the sight of the stone door and he quickly approached it.

"Well I'll be a goblins uncle. A door lads! This has to be the place, no question bout it!"

Ulrich is going to start investigating the door, checking for traps, hidden mechanisms, locks, etc.

As Ulrich gets closer to the door, he can see it is slightly ajar and looks like it could be pushed open. There is no light or movement visible through the crack.

Faint runes in ancient dwarf-tongue, heavily weathered, proclaim the realm of Mirn Dural.

Ulrich cannot find any active traps or mechanisms on the door itself, but does spot two concealed arrow-slits high on the wall, one ether side of the door. In the old days dwarven archers would have used these to defend the entrance.

Ghardak steps forward and bows to the door.

"We come to return this place to the dwarves. May we rid it of the creatures that have claimed it as their own," the stony dwarf says. Ghardak checks that there is no one aiming at them through the arrow slits.
Jun 20, 2023 10:54 am
Ghardak's keen eyes peer into the darkness behind the arrow-slits. There is no movement nor glint of metal. The stony dwarf feels sure that no-one is aiming at the dwarves before the door.

Gyrmmal looks at the door in awe. The construction is magnificent, as all dwarven structures are.

We found it. he says. Then after a moment I guess we can go in
Jun 20, 2023 6:14 pm
Gromli grunts, "At last." For this dwarf, being here is a childhood dream come true.

"The door and its surroundings match the description passed down for generations. 'Woe be to any who dare desecrate Mirn Dural' is what our high priest used to say." Gromli looks for any signs of additions or damage to the immediate area.

The wizened dwarf looks dubiously at the door. Though, he looked at most things either dubiously or disdainfully. He chews absent-mindedly on some sort of dried root vegetable. "It would be wise to find another entrance. At the very least, we would have an escape. It may not be our way, but sideways is a good way."
Jun 20, 2023 6:25 pm
Ulrich slyly peaks his head through the ajar door and gestures for the others excitedly.

"Ain't no traps or defenses here to bother with and shes wide open and inviting. Looking for another door might be more trouble than the effort as well. Its bound to be hidden and I don't feel so inclined to traipse about this cliffside all night."
Jun 20, 2023 10:07 pm
"I don't think one would be so easily found, and not from this direction. Maybe the skinnier ones can squeeze through the arrow slits," Ghardak says. He prepares to go in, also attempting to detect anything untoward like Gromli is doing.
Jun 20, 2023 10:15 pm
Dalo tucks the rest of the vegetable inside his beard, held in place by a stout copper ring. "So long as you hear my council, I will follow."

Gromli cannot find any signs of damage other than the wear of many years. Nor is there any sign of new construction, which he believes would easily stand out given the great skill the door was made with.

Gyrmmal, too, notices the craftsmanship as the heavy door moves easily beneath his hand.

It opens into a large hall. Gyrmmal is standing on a narrow ledge overlooking a deep, dark crevasse that cuts the room in two, completely obstructing passage to the opposite side. The broken beginning of a great stone bridge can be seen. This must have been a last line of defense for the dwarves of Mirn Dural.

A dangerous-looking rope bridge, frayed and thin, spans the gap. Not dwarf-work; no dwarf would be satisfied with such rickety construction.

Water gurgles and rushes somewhere far below.

On the far side of the chasm two copper braziers burn brightly. By their light Gyrmmal can see two humanoid shapes. They appear to be gesturing and talking to each other with raised voices, but he cannot make out what is said. They don't appear to have noticed Gyrmmal.

The time is early afternoon.
The chasm is about 30 feet across. The bridge looks like it could only be crossed slowly and carefully.

Jun 21, 2023 1:26 pm
"I can try and get a closer look, but me eyes ain't the keenest. A bit of light would be right welcome." Ulrich lowered himself into a half crouch and moved quietly towards the bridge in the hopes of getting a better look at whatever was on the otherside. His hand gripped the handle of his small axe as he waded through the darkness.
Jun 21, 2023 1:43 pm

He does notice, however, that the voices are human.

Ulrich raised an eyebrow at the recognition of tallfolk voices and skunked back towards the entrance and his companions.

"Its a pair of longshanks to be sure. Couldn't quite make out what they were blathering on about but they haven't noticed us yet. Ya think they are friendly? Or are these just some vagabonds looking to desecrate the place?"
Jun 21, 2023 4:58 pm
Gromli keeps his voice low. "Whoever or whatever they are, they do not belong here. We can't allow them to go any further. They will only interfere with our mission."

"I'm not one for sweet talking, but maybe a couple of us should approach them and convince them to leave. The rest of us can spread out in the hall and be ready if they are unreasonable."
Jun 21, 2023 6:25 pm
"Good thinkin' Gromli! I can hang back and give em a good pelt or two with me sling, as long as theres some light, should things get less than civilized." Ulrich untied a strap of leather from his tightly cinched belt and unraveled it into its usable state.

"Hopefully they don't have any friends deeper within neither."

"I'm not the most enchanting individual..."

Ghardak examines the bridge to see if it will tolerate the weight of a dwarf with heavy armor.
Jun 22, 2023 5:00 am
The bridge looks like it will support the weight of a dwarf in heavy armour without immediately breaking, but it might not remain stable whilst doing so.
Jun 22, 2023 12:51 pm
"Be careful when you cross the bridge."
Jun 22, 2023 6:21 pm
Gromli turns to Ghardak. "I have no intention of crossing that bridge yet. I don't believe our ancestors would make such a shoddy ... thing. There must be a better way into the mountain."

He turns to Grymnal. "It is my idea, so I shall join you."

Gromli steps inside the hall and calls to the two near the braziers. "Ho, strangers! We mean you no harm! What business do you have here?" Then he starts walking toward them at a cautious pace.

Ulrich sets a stone into the cradle of his sling as he quietly settles himself into a hidden but advantageous position across the chasm.
Jun 22, 2023 10:06 pm
Hrmph! The runemaster finds a nice stone upon which to sit. It had been quite the journey, and these younger dwarves didn't even look tired. He rests a moment and allows the foolish one to get killed by manfolk.
Jun 23, 2023 12:12 am
Gyrmmal walks in with Gromil. He hold the lit lantern.
Jun 23, 2023 1:58 am
Sen also loads a stone into his sling and quietly slips into the shadows behind Gromli and Gyrmmal.
Jun 23, 2023 2:48 am
Gromli hears a startled exclamation from the far side of the chasm. A moment of silence follows, then suddenly an arrow clatters off the stone wall a few feet to his left – an obvious warning shot.

"Don't come any closer!" a shout comes. "Who are you? What's your business here?"
Jun 23, 2023 4:16 am
"Our business is none of your business! We were sent here by the Lords of the Dwarves. Present yourselves now!" Gromli grips his sword and continues forward.
Jun 23, 2023 6:03 am
"Aw, hell. Get out of here while you can. Ghazat'll have your heads, and ours too if we let you in!" the voice replies.

A few moments later a second, shaky, higher-pitched voice pipes up.

"Wait, maybe we can make a deal." One of the shadowy figures steps forward. The glow of the braziers illuminates a young woman clad in shabby leather armour and carrying a bow, with an arrow nocked but pointed downwards.

"We'll let you in if you let us out. We just want to get out of this place," she calls.

She continues to exchange words quietly with the other human whilst looking over at the dwarves.

Those that speak goblin or orcish recognise Ghazat as a goblinoid name of some kind.

Jun 23, 2023 1:23 pm
"Shhh, be quiet! They'll hear you." the woman hisses, shooting a nervous glance over her shoulder.

The other figure steps forward from the shadows to stand beside her. It's a young man wearing chain armour. A bow is slung across his back and he's holding a battle-axe.

"No more talking," he says. "You come across first, and no funny business or I'll cut this bridge down. We're taking a hell of a chance on you."
Jun 23, 2023 10:56 pm
"I would go, but I can be a bit abrasive - especially to those who don't get our dwarfish humor" says Sen quietly to the rest of his party "But for whoever does go across I think we should tie a rope around their waist in case that bridge doesn't hold"
Jun 23, 2023 11:07 pm
Ulrich, seeing there was no immediate danger, sets aside his sling and stone and uncoils the rope from the side of his pack. He finds a sturdy boulder and cinches the rope around its base and offers the other end to whoever desired it.

"That'll stop a good drop! But unless you want to do one at a time we should have another tied up."

Not to cause trouble, but I don't see why our characters would immediately obey commands from unfamiliar intruders and take a dangerous path to an unknown location to probably fight an unknown enemy. It seems awfully risky without more information. That said, in the interest of keeping the story moving, if the party wants to use the rope bridge, Gromli will volunteer to be first.

Also, I think there's a good chance that the dwarves from long ago would have built at least one secret passage in this hall and the PCs should at least look for a way down that doesn't involve the bridge.

This is a valid point of view, and maybe this is a good discussion to have over the weekend (and probably best in the OOC thread), as I'm going to slow the game pace down a tad. I know people have real-life commitments over the weekend and I don't want them to miss their chance to contribute.

I don't think I'm giving anything away by saying this is a complex encounter with many possible outcomes and courses of action.

Dalo watches as they depart, holding the lead to Freki loosely. "And stay out of our tombs," he calls out to them. Hopefully this orc did them all a favor and scared off some more would-be robbers. Perhaps they would be able to thank this pig-faced monster in person. With a quick death.

After they have left, the wizened dwarf rises slowly and approaches those huddled around the secret door.

Jun 28, 2023 12:42 pm
Ulrich's search discovers the door's cunningly-made trigger: two concealed stone plates above the door, when pushed simultaneously, cause the door to slide open.

A narrow passage is revealed, descending a flight of stairs to open up into a small chamber below. Light from outside slants into the room through a series of narrow embrasures, posts for archers watching the entrance to the dwarf-halls.

Gromli, keeping watch, does not see any movement.

As you pass through the archer gallery, you notice the clever construction of the arrow-slits. They blend easily into the mountainside and would be nearly impossible to spot on the approach, and give great protection to anyone standing inside.

The floor is littered with debris, cobwebs, and rat droppings. Poorly cured hide blankets and well-gnawed bones are scattered about. Freki sniffs at one of the blankets and gives a low growl.

A short passage stretches northward (for reference, the rope-bridge ran east-west). At the far end you can see a small alcove, an apparent dead-end.

Dalomdûmir whips the blanket off the floor and a large rat scurries away, dripping a trail of blood – one of Gromli's stabs must have scored the creature's flank.

Dalomdûmir, chanting, casts a handful of dust towards the orcs.

As the dust sails through the air, Sen slings a stone straight into the doorway-orc's temple, stunning it. Ghardak quickly takes advantage and fells the hapless creature with a strong hammer-blow.

Six other orcs collapse in unison, trapped in sorcerous slumber by Dalomdûmir's enchantment. Only the large orc remains standing, deep in the room.

Hold on folks, we are getting ahead of ourselves.

The combat procedure is this:

> Declare spells and melee movement (we are here)

Initiative: Each side rolls 1d6.
Winning side acts:
Monster morale
Movement
Missile attacks
Spell casting
Melee attacks
Other sides act: In initiative order.

'Melee movement' only refers to retreats and fighting withdrawals (n/a this round as no PCs are in melee yet)

It's clear now that nobody wants to cast any spells, so we can proceed to initiative
(highest roll goes first, PCs win if it's a tie)

The PCs go first, so I'll take your actions as posted.

Rolls

Initiative: PCs - (1d6)

(3) = 3

Initiative: Monster - (1d6)

(3) = 3

Ulrich and Sen Malor pelt the large orc with stones. The orc winces in pain, the distraction creating an opening for Gromli to score a deep stab in the creature's flank.

Freki, Gromli, Ghardak and Ulrich race after the hollering orc, who is only a few feet ahead of the pursuers.

The door opens in the middle of a hallway. To the north an enormous statue stands proudly, a fierce-looking dwarf in heavy mail armor. The stone warrior holds an axe in one hand and a smith’s hammer in the other.

To the south (where the orc went), the passage continues a short distance before turning east. The orc passed by a large, iron-bound door (closed) which has a skull fixed to the center by a spike, and is hurtling headlong down the long east-running hallway. Just in front of him, there is a large south-facing opening. It is not yet clear whether the orc intends to continue east or turn south.

Once the yelling orc has been silenced, the dwarves in the corridor notice a stomping sound and a muffled growling from behind the iron-bound door. Sen Malor, nearest, feels faint vibrations in the floor.

Now that the chaos has passed from the large chamber, Dalomdûmir and Gyrmmal notice that it must have once been the main bunk-room for dwarven guards, now used by the orcs as a living chamber. They can hear that the fleeing orc's shouting has stopped.

Three sleeping orcs remain alive in the bunkroom.

Dalomdûmir searches the downed orcs and gathers a small quantity of coins, totalling 10 gp in value.

The iron-bound door bursts open. Two sleek, silver-furred wolves appear in the doorway, and behind them stands an immense, yellow-tusked ogre. In one hand it clutches a large, double-bladed axe inscribed with dwarven runes. In the other it carries a magnificent steel shield as lightly as a buckler. A steel cap, battered crudely into a mockery of a crown, sits on its head.

"Oi!" it bellows. "'Oo dares disturb da rest of da Great Ulfe?!!"

It does not look friendly.

I'll give the PCs a chance to reply outside of combat time (if they want to), but any other action will trigger an initiative roll.

The Great Ulfe's laughter trails off, and his grin twists into a puzzled frown. "You know, he was a sub-jeck. Maybe you shouldna got him." The ogre goes quiet as it slowly ponders the situation, wearing a confused expression.

Meanwhile, the two wolves snarl at Freki, who growls back. All the canines keep their distance despite the obvious tension.

Dalomdûmir and Gyrmmal can hear that some kind of commotion is coming from the corridor, although they don't know what is being said.
Jul 11, 2023 8:33 pm
Gyrmmal wants to ensure that all the Orcs are dead before he moves on. I would be bad if they went to fight another group and then these ones woke up and they ended up in a fight with two groups. He will join the others in the hall after the last 3 are dead.
Jul 11, 2023 8:50 pm
Ulrich does his best to melt into whatever dim part of the room is available. His words would do little to assuage this beast and he could potentially knick the ogre from behind something fierce if it stayed distracted.

Jul 11, 2023 10:08 pm
Dalo assists Gyrmmal in the grisly task before joining the rest of the band. The wisdom of clearing a path back is evident to the master of runes.

Jul 12, 2023 6:43 am
Dalomdûmir and Gyrmmal finish their grim task and start to head towards the corridor.

Gromli's tale only worsens the Great Ulfe's puzzlement. The dwarves' presence, Ghazat's death, the story of a failed uprising... it's clearly too much for the hulking creature to parse. He scratches his head in silence, thinking hard.

The PCs have a chance at a surprise round if they act whilst the ogre is confused. Negotiation is also possible.

The Great Ulfe retrieves two chains from the room behind him, which he attaches to the wolves' collars.

"We go to kitchen first," the ogre says. "Get food. Not good for shorties if me 'n Vak 'n Thrag get hungry. Har har!"

He gestures to the south-facing opening down the corridor. You can see the passage opens into a large cavern which the orc community is using as a common area. You see all manner of orc-kin: large warriors, domineering matrons, zooming children, aged layabouts, conniving goblins and more. All are silent before the Great Ulfe.

"We takin' dogs for a walk," the ogre tells them, taking obvious pride in the deceit. "Get food first. Back later. You lot stay." The orcs bow and nod. Their fear of their brutal ogre-king is palpable.

The Great Ulfe guides the party further south to a chamber with a chimney and a large cooking fire. The cooking-orcs there provide him a large bowl of awfully pungent stew, which he and the wolves share noisily, and a sack of dried salted meat of some unrecognisable type.

The ogre now steers the party back to the common area. He instructs the orcs to move all the crates and sacks of supplies that cover the east side of the room. A short passage is revealed, ending in an iron gate stuffed with straw pallets.

The Great Ulfe points at it. "Way down," he says.

The orcs are visibly surprised, but don't question the Great Ulfe – they seem intimidated by the ogre.

You do notice they become nervous when the iron gate is revealed, and all shift to the west side of the common area, with a few slinking away. Those dwarves that understand goblin or orc can make out a few frightened whispers about "the bugs".

The iron gate has a crude lock that Ulrich opens easily.

The passage opens into a large chamber that recalls the majesty of the dwarves in the elder days. The ceiling soars to thirty feet high in the center, and upon the walls stunning images of dwarves at their forges are carved in relief.

Two large stone doors exit to the north and south. Several old skeletons lie scattered near the northern door.

In the center of the floor, a natural rift descends sharply. Dozens of stone steps lead down into darkness.

From far below you can hear the distant sound of running water, and a curious buzzing sound.

After the party enter the chamber, four stirges fly up the stairway! The dwarves, alert to danger, are ready for them.

Still to act:
Ulrich
Sen
(Ulfe and the wolves will generally act at the end of the PC turn)
Jul 22, 2023 1:35 am
Ulrich unhooks his handaxe from his belt and hefts it as he looks between Sen's predicament and the beastie still flitting about. He counted himself fairly handy with a toss and weighed the options of what should be done. The one on Sen was slowly draining the poor bugger but if his aim was off the axe might just plant in his neck. But the other stirge was still at large, though swooping somewhat ineffectually. Making his choice he flicked his forearm and sent the axe sailing through the air towards Sen Malor's stirge.

He watches in horror as the creature somehow detaches itself quickly enough to dodge the weapon and sink its proboscis back in.

"Bollocks!!!"

Jul 23, 2023 5:59 am
The Great Ulfe gathers the stirge corpses from the ground and places them into a large sack. "I reckon dems may be good ettin'," he says. "Roast onna stick."

As the party descends down the stairs, they find the narrow crevasse winds down quite a long ways, twisting and turning. The floor has been cut into hundreds of shallow steps, but the walls and ceiling are still natural rock. About 60 feet down a rushing stream spills down from a narrow crack to your left and crosses the stairway, disappearing into a narrow, winding tunnel to your right. The rill is only about 2 or 3 feet wide.

There are now two possible paths: continue down the stairway, or follow the side-passage with the stream.
Jul 23, 2023 6:13 am

The side passage.
Jul 23, 2023 12:20 pm
Ghardak examines both paths, checking for traps and where one might lead.

"Do our histories tell us more about this place?" Ghardak asks.
Jul 24, 2023 2:21 am
The two delvers, Ghardak and Gromli, with their great knowledge of stone-work and mining, see at once that the side-passage is completely natural. There are no signs it was ever worked or shaped by dwarven hands.

Ghardak searches for traps and finds none.

Ahead, the stairway curves round a bend, and there is a hint of airflow suggesting a cavern or chamber of some kind.

Rolls

Find traps - (1d6)

Jul 24, 2023 1:06 pm
"Down? Or the side passage?" Ghardak asks the others.
Jul 24, 2023 3:40 pm
"Great secrets are hidden in small places, far from prying eyes. Let us take the side passage."
Jul 24, 2023 8:32 pm
"Side passage sounds good."
Jul 24, 2023 8:48 pm
Ulrich turns to Ulfe and points down the watery side passage.

"Know bout anything that lies beyond there?"
Jul 25, 2023 3:03 am
"Dunno nothin'," the Great Ulfe answers Ulrich. "Me 'n orcs never been down 'ere. Orcs scared of bugs."

The party follow the stream down the side passage. The stream descends quickly and the going is slow over the slick, treacherous rocks.

About fifty feet down the passage, you see the body of a long-dead dwarf stretched out upon the rocky bank of the stream. It is face down, and wearing a backpack that appears aged but intact.

Next to the body, atop a ridge jutting out from the passage wall, is a nest of stirges. About a dozen of the creatures appear to be sleeping.

Any sound, or any closer approach of light, will risk waking the stirges.

The party are 30 feet from the body and the stirge nest.
Jul 25, 2023 11:34 am
Sen prods and scratches at the wound on his neck. "Is it worth sneaking past those things to explore the rest of the passage? Perhaps our thief could sneak up and check the body of our brother."

"Shhh." Gromli motions for everyone to back up.
Jul 25, 2023 9:32 pm
"We could jump them and cut them up quickly..." Ghardak suggests, infuriated that they have fed on a dwarf.
Jul 27, 2023 6:51 pm
"If we take them by surprise, we have the advantage. If even one pebble shifts underneath our thieves foot, he will be eaten alive."
Jul 28, 2023 12:42 am
"I could try my best to get to our fallen kin, but thats a hell of a lot of bugs!" Ulrich whispered back. He looked back into the chamber once more and sighed. He quietly shuffled off his pack and set it aside, along with his hammer. Ulrich unsheathed his dagger and palmed his sling.

"The moment you see any of those things notice me deal with them! I'd rather not join him" Ulrich gripped the dagger between his teeth and fell into a low crouch as he began to move quietly towards the body.
Jul 28, 2023 12:58 am
Ghardak prepares to charge forward and stab with his sword...
Jul 28, 2023 2:20 am
The party prepare themselves and watch on anxiously, primed to come to Ulrich's aid.

Ulrich moves with painstaking care toward the fallen dwarf, each step seeming to take an eternity...

...until his foot slips on a slick rock, and lands with a splash in the shallow stream. The stirges awake from their slumber, instantly coming to full alertness! They begin to swarm towards the party.

The stirges come to full alertness instantly, swarming out of the nest to the very roof of the cavern before falling upon the hapless adventurers, their beaks like piercing spears. Being feeding creatures, they instinctively divide themselves amongst their targets.

It is now the PCs turn!

Stirges have 4 hp and are AC 12.

A PC trying to remove a feeding stirge can make an Open Doors roll to tear the stirge off.

When attacking a feeding stirge with a weapon, make an attack roll against the stirge's AC. On a miss, make another attack roll against the feeding victim's AC, dealing damage as normal.

If I have read the rolls right: Ulrich, Gyrmmal, Gromli, Ulfe, and the wolves Thrag and Vak are all successfully hit by the stirges, and are being fed on!
Jul 31, 2023 4:26 am
As the stirge plunged its needlelike mouth into his chest Ulrich yelped in pain and immediately attempted to wrest the creature off of him. But to no avail the blood from his wound already began to coat his hands as they slipped off of the stirge. He whimpers in pain as he reaches for his dagger to finish the job.

Aug 17, 2023 12:24 pm
The Great Ulfe and his two wolves hurl themselves at the stirges, bringing down two of the beasts! Only a single solitary stirge remains.

Rolls

Ulfe attack, damage - (1d20+5, 1d10+1)

1d20+5 : (10) + 5 = 15

1d10+1 : (1) + 1 = 2

1d20+2 : (19) + 2 = 21

1d6 : (3) = 3

Vak attack, damage - (1d20+2, 1d6)

1d20+2 : (18) + 2 = 20

1d6 : (6) = 6

Aug 17, 2023 12:44 pm
In the circumstances, that's enough for me declare the combat over, ruling that the PCs will easily dispatch the remaining stirge.

The dwarves emerge bloodied but victorious, having avenged their slain kinsman.

Able to take a closer look at the unfortunate ancestor, you see he wears a suit of chain-mail links un-ravaged by time, and on the ground beside him is a finely-crafted battle-axe (+1 to hit). Inside his backpack there is a 50-foot length of rope, coins worth 50gp and three small stone discs engraved with runes.

Dalomdûmir and Sen Malor recognise these as clan Stormhammer craft; the discs are imbued by a rune-smith with a rune of power, and the magic is released when the disc is broken – such as being smashed with a hammer, or hurled to the ground. One bears the dwarven rune for treasure, one the rune for courage, and the last the rune for healing.

You can see the passage continues a short distance before bending to the right, presumably back towards the stair you came down on.
Aug 17, 2023 10:38 pm
Ghardak lowers his head and prays for the soul of the fallen.

"You have been avenged," he says. "We should use the one for healing now. Some of you are... sucked dry."
Aug 17, 2023 11:07 pm
Ulrich sits himself up with a groan looking down at his punctured chest. He rips a portion of his sleeves off and does his best to make a bandage of sorts.

"A bit... of healing never hurt no one..." He coughed as he tightened the bandage across his torso. Ulrich eyes the bag of gold thoughtfully.

"At least we've found something of use..."
Aug 18, 2023 1:54 pm
Ghardak breaks the healing rune, hoping it will help the more injured of the group.
Aug 20, 2023 1:45 pm
Ghardak hurls the healing disc to the ground. It strikes near Ulrich's feet, shattering with a momentary flash of white light that spreads quickly over the injured dwarf before melting away like mist.

Ulrich regains 5 hit points.

"Anyone want the axe and chain mail? How about the warrior?" Ghardak says.
Aug 21, 2023 6:43 am
Gromli smiles widely enough that his false tooth glitters in the torch light. "My father is a metal smith. He would be proud to see me wearing such fine armor."
Aug 22, 2023 2:56 pm
If there's anything else you want to do before pressing on, we can retcon that. When the PCs are ready to explore again, they see:

The stream-passage curves southward and exits into a high natural cavern, with a ceiling easily 40 feet or more overhead.

On the northern edge of the cavern is the stairway you used to enter this level.

The stream continues through the floor of the cavern and disappears under a low stone overhang to the south, while larger passageways exit to the south-east and the north-east.

You notice a heavy animal smell wafting from the north-east tunnel.
Aug 24, 2023 10:19 pm
Ghardak is fine with Gromli taking the armor. If no one wants it, he'll take the battle axe.

"Is that the creatures you are talking about, Ogre?" Ghardak whispers to Ulfe regarding the animal smell.
Aug 26, 2023 11:44 am
"Dunno what that is," The Great Ulfe answers. "Never been down 'ere before. Maybe somethin' good to eat?" he says hopefully.
Aug 27, 2023 10:21 pm
Ghadrak suggests heading towards the north east tunnel.
Aug 29, 2023 4:23 am
"Agreed. If there's something there, I don't want it behind us."

Gyrmmal
Dalomdûmir & Freki

Gromli
Ulfe and the wolves

The north-east path leads to a large, high-ceilinged cavern. To the north, a 10-foot wide, square-mouthed tunnel shows that someone or something has been at work in these caves.

A strong gate of rough-hewn timber blocks a small passage to the northeast.

Three other passageways wind off towards the south.

The animal smell grows stronger as you approach.

As Ulrich carefully leads the way, his gaze is repeatedly drawn to a patch of the rock wall near the cavern entrance. Suddenly, the rock seems to come to life before his eyes – too late he realises that a reptilian humanoid was pressed against it, its skin camoflaguing perfectly against the rock.

It pounces into the middle of the party, claws lashing and teeth gnashing at Dalomdûmir.

You can see another of the creatures dashing towards the timber gate.
