Gromli glares at the young man and says in a low voice, "And we're taking a hell of a bigger chance on you."
Jun 24, 2023 7:37 am
Robago says:
"Shhh, be quiet! They'll hear you." the woman hisses, shooting a nervous glance over her shoulder.

The other figure steps forward from the shadows to stand beside her. It's a young man wearing chain armour. A bow is slung across his back and he's holding a battle-axe.

"No more talking," he says. "You come across first, and no funny business or I'll cut this bridge down. We're taking a hell of a chance on you."
OOC:
Not to cause trouble, but I don't see why our characters would immediately obey commands from unfamiliar intruders and take a dangerous path to an unknown location to probably fight an unknown enemy. It seems awfully risky without more information. That said, in the interest of keeping the story moving, if the party wants to use the rope bridge, Gromli will volunteer to be first.

Also, I think there's a good chance that the dwarves from long ago would have built at least one secret passage in this hall and the PCs should at least look for a way down that doesn't involve the bridge.

This is a valid point of view, and maybe this is a good discussion to have over the weekend (and probably best in the OOC thread), as I'm going to slow the game pace down a tad. I know people have real-life commitments over the weekend and I don't want them to miss their chance to contribute.

I don't think I'm giving anything away by saying this is a complex encounter with many possible outcomes and courses of action.

Ghardak starts looking around on his side of the bridge for another possible means of egress.
Jun 25, 2023 12:17 pm
When Ghardak's search takes him to the left wall, the faintest outline of a door in the rock-face catches his eye. It's not immediately clear how it operates, but he's sure there is a secret door there.

"There's the outline of a door here.." Ghardak whispers to the others.

The longer the stand-off continues, the tenser the humans seem. Their faces are taut with desperation. If you had to judge, they seem close to breaking point.

After checking if this is a trap, Ghardak tries to get the secret door open.

Ulrich stands by with the rope should anyone need it to cross the bridge but he eyes the direction of Ghardak's discovery should everyone move for it.

Dalo moves towards the bridge across from where the humans wait. Hrmph! "It has been a long journey, and we do not wish to be rushed. Come across, we have more to attend to than some long-legs who thought they could profit in the tombs of our ancestors." He does not mention the secret door.
Jun 26, 2023 7:36 pm
Gromli stays where he is and looks behind him. Then he faces the humans and holds up his open weapon hand. "We are assembling now."

You said you want to leave, if you cross the bridge you can walk right out the door! I’m not sure how us coming to you helps that. He says. Then he starts to slowly inch towards Ghardak and motions to the others to follow. The bridge doesn’t look safe and the door is possibly the best way to get out of this standoff without leaving.

The humans seem slightly relieved by your entreaties. They start out across the bridge, the young woman leading the way. It immediately begins to sway and roll sickeningly under their weight, but with practised movements they keep their balance and manage to cross safely.

"Thank you," the young woman says.

"Ghazat's the chief orc," the man says. "I'd keep clear of him, if I were you. Something's going on, and he's even more vicious than usual. We're getting the hell out of here."

With that, they dart towards the door.

Describe for us what Ghardak doing to try and get the door open.

Ghardak tries to pry the door open using tools or finding how it swings; in or out.
Jun 27, 2023 1:07 pm
Ghardak investigates the door and discovers that it slides rather than swings. It stubbornly resists his attempts to pry it open; there must be some trigger to open it.

Dalo watches as they depart, holding the lead to Freki loosely. "And stay out of our tombs," he calls out to them. Hopefully this orc did them all a favor and scared off some more would-be robbers. Perhaps they would be able to thank this pig-faced monster in person. With a quick death.

After they have left, the wizened dwarf rises slowly and approaches those huddled around the secret door.

Ulrich watched the scene unfold with slight confusion and worry as to this orc the humans mentioned. He coiled his rope back up and approached the door with the others to take a gander under lamplight.

"Perhaps a switch or false rock is nearby?"With that he started to look around the area.

Gromli keeps watch to make sure no one crosses the bridge from the other side.
Jun 28, 2023 12:42 pm
Ulrich's search discovers the door's cunningly-made trigger: two concealed stone plates above the door, when pushed simultaneously, cause the door to slide open.

A narrow passage is revealed, descending a flight of stairs to open up into a small chamber below. Light from outside slants into the room through a series of narrow embrasures, posts for archers watching the entrance to the dwarf-halls.

Gromli, keeping watch, does not see any movement.
