Zephyr
Helix,
She smiles and looks over at her raven, "Mage is my protector. If I'm in trouble, I can send him to find another Talon. He's really good at keeping track of everyone. Give me a kiss, Mage," she says softly. The raven turns and opens his beak and gently touches the tips of his beak to Zephyr's cheek. She grins, proud of the bird's reaction.

"Are you hungry?" she asks as she heads for the hallway and beckons you to follow.

Janelle
Litch,
Janelle enters the room without hesitation, her demeanor calm and professional despite the blood, smoke, and grease stains marring her suit, shirt, and tie. "I'd like to understand more about our situation. You rescued us from those raiders. Who happened to have a missile that could take down a plane..." she takes note of the new weapons in your armory but doesn't mention it. "And now, we're here. I can assure you Princy would reimburse you for saving us, but you'd need to take us to The Tower for that. That said, without our butler, I'm worried about Parker's health and would like to make sure she's okay to travel. And I don't want to separate Paisley from her mother if I can help it. So... what's your plan, sir?" She folds her hands behind her back and waits patiently for your answer as Kes softly mutters "sir" with amusement.

What do you do?
Jul 18, 2023 2:40 pm
"Litch is fine." I inform her, though I don't press it. If she's more comfortable using the formal honorific, I'll respond to it. So...she hasn't caught on to Syd's identity. That could prove useful. "My medic is more than competent and will care for your charges. I'd rather get them to a safe and stable condition before moving them."

I pause and look over her face and suit. "Maybe get you cleaned up too." I hold up a hand before she can retort anything about duty before luxury or some-such shite. "You're doing a good job, looking out for their well-being, Janelle. Rest assured that I want them cared for as well." The placating finished, I ask. "I've heard that things are...unstable at the Tower currently. Is it even safe to take your charges back to Princy right now?"

Janelle
Litch,
Janelle takes the compliment as well as one could when you aren't her boss, but her savior instead. You ask about the situation at the Tower and she frowns. "I'm afraid you likely have more up-to-date information on the sitrep than I do, suh - than I do, Litch. We've been in Chicago for a couple of weeks visiting Parker's family. I know Princy was attacked and that our butler and advisor have left. Parker insisted we return once she heard about the trouble, but she did speak with Princy, so I know he's alive, at least. I doubt I can keep her away from Princy for long, even if it is dangerous."
Jul 18, 2023 4:30 pm
I watch the bird interact with Zephyr as easily as the waves interact with Canary's vessel, but the eerie feeling in my stomach doesn't go away. She may be only boasting about her bird, but the bravado that he easily tracks the Talons sounds like a threat - if he can track them, he can track you too. Don't even try to run away.

I swallow down the feeling and put a hand on my stomach where it sits with quiet, dread-filled weight. I don't answer aloud about being hungry, but I do follow her out. My body feels like it went through a choppy storm. Maybe some food will settle me.
Jul 18, 2023 7:08 pm
I want to as if Chicago is also as covered by water as it is here. I haven't left this city in over a decade; I don't know how other municipalities are faring. Canary might have an idea. I nod when she mentions the butler again. "I know Edmund, the butler. Who is the advisor who has also absconded? Do you suspect that either of them were involved?"
Jul 19, 2023 2:56 am
Somehow, even the sound of the air seems different as I enter the vast open space of the Talons' sanctuary. "Frankly, I'm rather surprised myself. But she's not out of the depths yet, she's going to need blood, and soon. Aloe's short on time too, hard to tell whose clock has less time on it." I stop as I near the bottom of the ramp, near enough to speak comfortably, but no closer to ensure that whatever the men were discussing before would remain between them. "I hate to impose but I need to get to the Fountains to get some supplies as soon as possible. Miss Zephyr recommended I check with you."

Zephyr
Helix,
You trail Zephyr as she leads you down the hallway into a large kitchen. The room appears to have been a kitchen before the Great Flood, so there is a hood for the oven and a large stainless steel industrial refrigerator. There's only a trickle of power here, though, so the Talons have had to make do with less opulence than you saw in the Vault.

Zephyr's other raven flies into the room and caws with a higher pitch. Both ravens fly to an island and walk back and forth excitedly as Zephyr prepares a simple meal of a hearty soup - which appears to be a lobster bisque of some kind - along with some bread. She makes two bowls, putting one in front of you and taking the other. She sits near you on one of the stools at the island and breaks up her bread to hand-feed the ravens. "Been a weird week for you, hasn't it?" She says casually, opening the door for conversation as she watches her ravens gobble up the bread.

You notice the whispers are quiet now. It was in the back of your brain for a few minutes now, but other thoughts dominated. But the Roost, a place for the Gray Wing, seems to ward them away or something.

What do you do?

Janelle
Litch,
"Lucius," she replies after only a moment's consideration - she seems to judge you enough of an ally to spill that secret. "Edmund, no. Lucius? Probably. I've always considered him an opportunist, but Princy valued his insight and clever tricks. I very much want to return to The Tower and try to dig up who is the assassin, learn how Princy is doing, and try to clamp things down."

Merlin

Merlin
Syd,
Javan starts to reply, but Merlin raises a hand, "The Fountains? Alright, I can take you. Jav, keep an eye on our guests while I make this run. C'mon, Syd." He ambles towards the rope ladder down and heads for the dock. "I assume you don't have anything to trade for these supplies?" he asks when you join him.
Jul 21, 2023 10:46 pm
"I was with Edmund when one of the Fountaineers attacked him." I divulge, figuring that she'll find out from people at the Towers' docks that Kestrel and I were sighted at the scene. Hiding it from her now holds little value to me. "Chap with slick-backed, black hair who goes by the name of Kamae. They seemed to believe that Edmund was behind the assault on Princy, but I agree with you that it sounds rather farfetched."

I watch Janelle's face for any kind of reaction that she disagrees with my assessment of the butler as I continue. "From what I gather of him, Edmund is a saver of lives, not a taker. The misguided fool even tried to save Kamae's life when they were cut down. Doesn't sound like the actions of a killer." I fix her with a steely gaze. "It's not what I would have done in his shoes."
Jul 22, 2023 3:00 am
The steaming bowl of soup and the bit of bread in front of me are nothing compared to the meal I shared with Wells. The conversation there may have been a cocked and loaded gun, but the food was unparalleled, worth risking the bullet between the eyes.

Speaking of between the eyes, the headache that came with the Whispers has gone away, but their silence is unsettling. I shift on my stool and scoop up my spoon, stirring the soup without sampling it. I glare at the birds as they gobble up the goodies Zephyr gives them, then drop my gaze back to my own grist.

"It's been a nightmare I can't escape," I answer finally, lifting the spoon and taking a tentative sip of the soup. I put the spoon back down and level my gaze on her. "Why do you seem so intent on walking through it with me?"
Jul 23, 2023 8:40 pm
Merlin volunteering to take me to the Fountains takes me by surprise. He is also right about me not having anything to offer. "That's very kind of you Mr. Merlin. And you are right. I have nothing to offer at the moment, though I'm certain when I get back to the Tower that Mr. Princy would be more than able to compensate however possible." As soon as I speak the words it occurs to me, and Merlin is probably already aware, that there is a lot of "if" around my ability to pay for anything right now.

"I must look like a thoddo to all of you." As far as possessions go, I have the clothes on my back, the revolver I took from Blue Light, and the knife I carry under my vest, in addition to the handful of tips I was able to collect off tables at Poseidon's Belly last night. The gun I was hoping to use to avenge Princy's attempted murder, but it may be better off in the hands of one of the Talons. Or at the bottom of the sea. And even though the knife is likely valuable, it is more of a sentimental item to me than anything else. Still, if I can't save Aloe and Parker I fear I'll be unwelcome here in addition to being unable to return to the Tower. The only things I have, these relationships, teeter on the precipice of hope, and utter despair.

"I have nothing." I quietly repeat, more to myself than anyone else.

Janelle
Litch,
"Kamae isn't one I'd save either. I agree that Edmund isn't an assassin," Janelle says simply. She doesn't waver under your steely gaze, but she isn't defiant, either. Purely professional. "I'd like to get an update from my boss, but I can't leave Parker and Paisley alone - no offense. Would you be willing to send one of your people to The Tower with a message from us? I assure you they will be paid for the effort." She carefully, and slowly, reaches her hands up behind her neck to pull a nice-looking golden necklace out, pulls it over her head, and offers it to you, "Worth a couple of jingle to the right people."

What do you do?

Zephyr

Zephyr
Helix,
Zephyr listens to your brief description of your latest days. When you ask why she keeps asking, she shrugs, "Sometimes a burden is lighter when shared. My moms both say that. It's been more true than not." She slurps some of her own soup, then offers more bread to her birds. "This place can be an escape. Or... at least a pause."

Merlin

Merlin
Syd,
Merlin doesn't stop moving, but he does slow down a bit to keep close to you. "Stuff is just what you can keep. Used for trade. Skills are what makes someone valuable, Syd." He glances over his shoulder as if to indicate what you're leaving behind. "People like Javan, Kes, and me, we're killers. The world's full of them. Dime a dozen. You? You're a healer. Very rare. Very important."

He pushes open the door to the outside and walks down the dock towards his jet ski. "We'll figure out a way to get them what they need, alright?" He looks back at you then, checking in with you.

What do you do?
Jul 25, 2023 2:59 am
The silence of the Whispers is a pause, I suppose, but is it a pause with purpose? Am I just a prisoner, separated from my power, or is this peace a present? A moment to regroup and come back stronger?

I pick at my bread, pulling crumbs apart and tossing them casually into my bowl. Even without the Whispers, Hard Strike's edict echoes in my head - worm your way into their good graces. Then, you will strike at their wicked heart.

I bring my gaze up to Zephyr and for a moment, I can see her heart there, vulnerable and beating, open to worms or leeches or snakes. Maybe I am all three.

"I was this close to securing myself a place in the Vault." I hold up my hand, fingers pinched almost together. "A life of luxury and security." I don't mention how it was all spiraling out of control before Amazon showed up. Instead, I pick up my spoon again and stir the bread crumbs into my soup. "I'm never going to get another chance at that now." And Lucky's never going to trust me again either. I shake my head. "It doesn't feel like an escape. It feels like a loss."

Zephyr
Helix,
"Did you really want to be a caged bird?" Zephyr asks pointedly. "All you'd ever be to those people would be an item they bought and paid for. We frelling saved you. Well, my father did."
Jul 25, 2023 1:29 pm
I stroke my chin, feeling the sharp stubble beginning to push through the follicles. I ponder her idea. Jackdaw springs instantly to my mind, but he doesn't always carry a gentle touch. He's a deal-maker, not a diplomat. I think we might need the latter in dealing with the Tower. We don't want Princy to think that we are holding his women hostage. Of course we expect to be paid for the safe delivery of his family and Janelle, but that's a given. We aren't brutes like the other flotsam that call themselves gangs.

But who to send instead? Why only send one person? There's safety in numbers and I can utilize the strengths of two birds to deliver one stone. "None taken. I'll send a couple of my Talons to deliver this piece. Whom should they ask for?"

Janelle
Litch,
Janelle blinks, "No, the necklace is my payment, to you, for taking the message. I can speak it to your Talons, or write it down if you think they might need that. They can deliver it to either of the twins. Wendy or Dez. They can speak with Princy and will be easier to reach." She offers you the necklace again - it seems as if it's an important item to her.
