Chapter 0: Hole in the Sky

Rat approaches the ledge and tosses a handful of bread crumbs over...
Jul 19, 2023 8:38 pm
The bread crumbs land on something solid and seem to float in midair. The invisible bridge is real!

Through feeling around very carefully, you are able to determine that the bridge is 30 feet wide, 2 feet thick, and feels like stone cobbles underfoot. It simply hangs in the sky with no support. This is the path forward...

You muster your druthers as you set out as a group along the invisible bridge. It is just wide enough for you to march six abreast, forming four ranks.

As you travel through the night, the bridge gently rises to a height of a half mile over the surface of the ocean. Dawn eventually breaks, and the day is sunny but the air is quite cold at this height. Land is completely out of sight.

Eventually, you reach the limits of your stamina. You will need to rest here, on a bridge you cannot see, oh so high in the sky...

Rat clings to the hem of Hyde's tunic as he goes, terrified that the bridge will suddenly give out beneath him. When the group finally makes camp, the orphan boy takes bread from his pouch and hands some to Hyde who accepts the meal with a nod.

"Good lad."

Sage is furiously scribbling notes in his journal regarding the bridge and the effects of high altitude on the body. This was certainly higher than he had ever been and the sensation was exhilarating!

As for Boxer, the dwarf, he did not care for the bridge one bit. The old mule sat cross legged in the center of the path and would not move.

The groups all went as soon as they saw that the bridge had been created.

They travelled until they could no longer walk due to exhaustion, they now sat down on the invisible bridge and hoped for the best.

"Stay close together." Bren the scribe said to his and the other groups, "it will help you stay warm in this cold weather."

OOC:
Does the bridge have walls?
Henry suggests that the group find something down to mark the edges of the bridge.

Joe the farmer has been collecting eggs from his hen and cooks some and offers them to his compatriots around him. He keeps an eye on the chicken to make sure no one gets any ideas about cooking it.

Deacon spends his time helping others and praying.

OOC:
The bridge has no walls, so you will have to be careful around the edges!

Threadz had walked confidently in front after the bridge’s existence had been confirmed. When it came time to rest, he was grateful for the last meal as it seemed as though no one thought much about how long this would take and where they would get provisions. He eyed the pig of a fellow townie with curiosity.

Honey had enjoyed the walk across the bridge. The views were unbelievably beautiful and there was a sense of mystery and purpose in the air. When settling in for the night, she unpacked her jar of the bee’s gold and dunked a hunk of bread to fill her belly before rest.

Fox and Talon, brothers of an Elven mother, huddle close together as they did when they were children and bear the strange night.
Jul 20, 2023 7:01 pm
Aemon and Yvon set up their bedrolls with feet toward the invisible edge.

Wrong Jonny crouches down and eventually just curls up fetal as close to the middle as he can.

Havlar marks the edge near him by sprinkling crumbs from his meal nearby. When he wakes, he'll be able to see if he moved closer in his sleep, is his thoughts.

You rest for several hours before resuming your journey along the invisible bridge. Gray clouds begin to gather in the sky above you. By midday it starts to rain. By late afternoon it becomes a full-fledged storm! You struggle to make progress in the pouring rain as thunder booms and wild winds whip you about!

Suddenly, a huge gust of wind blasts you!
OOC:
Every character must make a Luck check (roll d20, succeed by rolling at or under your Luck score); on a failure, the wind blows that individual off the bridge. They must make a DC 10 Reflex save to grab the side or they fall half a mile to their death!

This is a good time to remind you about your ability to burn Luck to increase your saving throws or ability checks! (Quick Start Guide pg. 22)

Pyne and Asha are able to hold onto their groupmates and are safe from falling off the bridge, but Ulric and Bren aren't so lucky and they begin to slide to the edge. They struggle and try to grab onto something, both finally able to get ahold of the edge of the bridge, saving them from falling.

"Help us!" Cried Ulric and Bren together.

"Quickly, we must make a line holding each other's legs so that some of us can get close to get the ones that are going to fall off!" Shouted Asha ash she took out her handaxe and began to motion for some of the others to grab her legs so that she can crawl over to get to the edge and help pull up those that are hanging on for dear life.

Threadz is spacing out and does not tune into the storm’s intensification, so he nearly loses his balance when the wind whipped up.
Honey, Fox, and Talon seemed to see the change blowing in the wind. They huddled close and stayed secure.

Roy, Selene, Kip, Minnie, and Alister gather at the cliff's edge. All of them whisper to each other, arguing over the Blue Lady's promises. Selene surveys the night sky and calculates the hour. She hushes the group and breathes, "It's time. Who will cross?" Kip frantically scoops up Minnie and idly scratches the sow's head. Kip shakes her head and confesses, "I need to know that I won't fall into the sea!"

Alister spits, "You sky-blind coward. Time away from the Stone has turned your courage sour."

Kip bears teeth and hisses, "Words! If you're so brave, show us how it's done. Fall to your death and be swallowed by the sea."

Alister lunges toward Kip, but Selene and Roy get between them.

Roy thinks, "Now is my time, lead!" Roy clears his throat and lowers his voice, "I will take the first step. Follow me, travelers. Let us change our stars together!" Roy takes a deep breath, swallows his fear, and takes a step off the cliff and into the night sky.

Well shoot, those were the two I had better character concepts for lol. Time to adapt 😂
Henry and deacon feel the wind blow and try to help other hold on, but in their efforts they exposed themselves. The wind caught them both causing them to tumble off the edge to their fated death.

Pipit and Joe were both able to hold on to the group to survive. They assist the group pulling others up when the wind calms.

Rolling first. Aemon and Wrong Jonny made it, and Yvon will burn 3 luck to pass. Havlar rolls reflex.
Aemon Stetch falls to his knees at the edge, but keeps his balance.

Wrong Jonny turns sideways and just leans, the wind leaving him be.

Yvon Kant feels like he's going over but his knee buckles fortuitously and he falls flat splaying his limbs, frozen at the close call.

Havlar rumbles off the edge but grabs a hold with one hand, and then pulls himself back on. He heaves and pants with the exertion.

As Thanger and Stelious watch in horror has Themla and her dog Clancy blows into the air, an amazing thing happens. Thelma grabs her dog and the fist drops them both rightfully at the edge of the bridge. Thelma manages to somehow twist and use her strength to move back to the middle. Then, out of nowhere, a figure is walking towards them on the bridge. It’s Mildred. She is moving very slow.

Poor Deacon the beadle has fallen off of the invisible bridge. You take small comfort in the fact that the storm makes it impossible to witness his gruesome death when he slams into the water half a mile below you. Fortunately, that is the only loss you suffer.

The wind becomes more manageable as the storm continues. It is cold and miserable, however, and those with a weak constitution begin to sniffle and cough.
OOC:
Any character with a Stamina of 7 or lower begins to get sick. Sick characters take a -1 penalty on attack, damage (attacks still do a minimum of one point), ability checks, and skill checks based on Strength, Agility, or Stamina. Sick characters who get eight hours of rest can make a DC 11 Fort save to recover.
At long last, the storm abates around midnight. You are wet, battered, and exhausted, but you are alive...
