'' They're not ?'' Roald says with fake surprise in his voice.
'' that's highly unfortunate for us... And for you as well I'm afraid ''
Roald takes a pause to watch the woman's reaction. Before he continues.
'' you see, if our friends would have been here we would 've taken you back to camp under our protection. But if they are not here... We will have to return and search somewhere else. The problem is of course, what we should do with you. The only thing I can come up with is taking you with us until we are far enough from your camp, that when we release you there is no risk of your friends coming after us. Let's say a day or 2 or maybe when we reach the village. People will probably want to know where you were and where your clothes are and such...

Are you really sure you haven't seen them? Let me describe them to you.''

Roald gives an elaborate description of the 2 boys, giving the woman time to think things through.
OOC:
it probably won't change anything since I 'failed' the Cha roll. But you never know with a different approach.

"Hmm. I don't know." Albert tells Norbert "Looks like there's nobody else around here. Wonder what that woman was doing out here all alone?" He looks behind at the group who still seems to be busy with the captured woman. "We may have some time to try and get a look at that camp."

He gestures at Daryl to join them. "Daryl, do you know where to go from here? If we can just find where they are keeping the prisoners, we can bust them out."

"Hey, I just had a crazy idea. If they have Theo and Phil, and we have that woman. Maybe we can negotiate an exchange."

"I never saw the camp." Daryl apologises. "When I got away I ran in the opposite direction. If we can get to the cage --it is just over there-- we may be able to free Theo and Phil." He agrees, though that does not address the possible issue of the mayor's daughter --who is also Theo's sister-- and Theo is unlikely to leave without her.

Olden steps forward slowly and carefully extricates the woman's legs from his belt, taking care to secure the belt to his waist.

He waits patiently with a smile tugging the corner of his mouth, as he sees Roald trying his mix of charm and a bit of fear on the woman.

"He's a good sort, my companion there is, don't let him scare you. Why not help him find his friends? Your feet, lass, really could use a bit of rest and some of that willowbark that grows near our camp" he says, pointing at her abraded feet."

"Stay" Norbert whispers to the dog. "I'll get as close as I can to the camp and I will return at the first sign of trouble." he adds to Albert and Daryl. "Be ready when I come running." He adds with a noncahalant smile.

He leaves any stuff he carries with the men and slowly makes his way in the direction everyone assumes the camp is. Staying low to the ground and in the shadows he makes hihs way through the undergrowth.

I added a +1 for dex, we can ignore if it doesn't apply.

Norbert presses himself to the ground when he spots the sentry. He stays as silent as possible and waits if he's spotted.
Lying on the floor he ways his options.

"I can't just leave now, at the first sign of trouble. I have to think about Theo ... and his sister." he thinks to himself in the encouraging voice he always hears from Albert. "I hope his god favours the bold."

He slowly backs up a bit and tries to get around the sentry in a wide arc.

Your prisoner looks offended at your comment about her feet. You get the feeling you have accidentally pushed on a metaphorical sore-spot. You can't know this, but she is rather proud of how her feet look, and has been worrying about what all this traipsing around unclad has been doing to them.

She does not seem to hear the rest of your words at all, fixated as she is on the perceived insult.
OOC:
Roald can continue with his 'intimidation', this presumably happened before and around the same time as his words above.

Your 'sentry' is less of a sentry and more 'just another woman doing her own thing', it is easy to skirt around her, and then to use her tracks to get you to where you can hear the sounds of many feet, and some light chanting.

You don't know this part of the valley, but you had not heard about there being a stone table in the middle of a clearing. The table stands below an old crooked oak tree, which leans east over the clearing.

Sunlight streams into the clearing, forming a rough circle around the dancers. The dancers are all adult women --of various ages-- and all naked. There are eleven of them dancing --of you look close enough to count-- which might seem a strange number to anyone who knows about such things. There are at least two other women out there (your prisoner and the 'sentry' you passed).

You don't see any sign of the mayor's daughter, or Theo or Phil (presumably you did not get to see the cage while dodging 'sentries'?). All the women look like locals to you. Some of them are friends of your mum. There are a few trying to guide some of the less nimble to the 'correct steps' but no one looks to be 'in charge'.

'' Please think very hard, have you seen them? ''
He looks the woman in the eye. She presses her lips in a tight line, indicating she's not going to speak.

damnit, maybe one last push...

''Hey Olden, how long since the others left? Maybe we can start packing to head back to the village. What do you think we should do with this one? Do we need to tie her up? I don't want to get strangled this night when we have to share my cloak''

Roald winks at Olden in a way that she has to notice it.

"While we're waiting for Norbert to get back, let's go and check out that cage you were talking about." Albert tells Daryl. "Since you said they are 'just over there' that shouldn't take too long. Then we can come back and exchange information to come up with a plan."

As said, Albert carefully and slowly walks in the indicated direction, trying to stay behind cover when possible and keeping an eye out for any movement in front of him.

"Wait." She says. "I will be a good girl, just don't leave me here. I want to go home." It is almost as though she does not hear the the rest of what you say, fixating on the talk of leaving. Her lip quivers and you realise she was trying not to cry instead of refusing to speak.

After a little probing you get her admit guiltily. "I didna 'spect it to go like this. By the time they started talking about sacrifice I's in too deep... and I didna know what they meant." (You suspect this is only partially true.) "I didna speak to the girl --none of us did-- but she seems nice, and, you know, just a girl in the end. I don want to hurt her, please take me with you."

She seems quite willing to betray her fellow women, but also willing to leave the mayor's daughter to her fate just so long as she does not have to do the deed herself. At least she has confirmed that the girl is here.

You don't meet anyone on you way to the cage, it is easy to hide in the forest foliage. However, the ground around the cage is bare, with nowhere to hide, so getting closer will be more challenging.

From your vantage point a dozen or so paces away you can see that Theo is alone, he looks in bad shape, either sleeping or unconscious, but still breathing.

Roald stares at the woman, who now apears to be just a girl.
"Alright, I believe you. But I'm afraid it is not that simple. If this girl is in trouble we have a duty to help her, we cannot leave her with these witches! That is what they are? right?"

"We'll wait for our friends to return, and then we will come up with a plan. Maybe you can be a part of this and return home a hero instead of a witch, wouldn't that be fantastic? I'm sure there is a reward in it as well."
Jul 19, 2023 8:39 pm
That doesn't look good. Poor Theo. Albert thinks as he looks at the cage. Then continues in a whisper. "We'll get you out of there, buddy." He takes a moment to survey the immediate area around the cage, taking note in his head of things like the distance to a tree-line or any 'guards' in sight. "I don't see Phil or the girl anywhere." he softly tells Daryl.

When he feels he knows enough, he takes a step back, hiding in the shrubs once again. Quietly, he prays to Raynor. "Raynor, please protect the young ones who have been taken by these savage women. And help us guide these women towards your light, for they have not felt the warmth of your benevolence in their life. So that we can bring the children home safely."

After focusing on his breath for a minute or so, he opens his eyes again and heads back to where Norbert split off. "Daryl, please go and tell the others what we've seen already. I'll wait for Norbert."

- Roald -

"What? They're 'witches'?" She asks, grasping at straws. "So... it's ... not my fault?" If she can blame her actions on 'witches' that would absolve her of 'blame' in her mind.

The promise of heroics is not yet a significant factor in her decision process, but you may be able to use such ideas to gain her aid in whatever you do next.

"No." Daryl agrees. "I did not see Phil after I woke up before I left. Theo was inconsolable and not making sense except to go get you, but we never knew about a girl. Sorry"

At your instruction he quickly runs back to Roald, Olden, Limpy and the woman to tell then what you know.
Jul 21, 2023 2:11 am
Olden adds quietly, "It's all the witches' fault? You think the folks back home will buy that? Tongues wag, yes lass?"

"Now think what the same folk might say of you if you help save them. You could walk ... proudly .

Olden turns around as he thinks he hears something. "Time's running out, I think."
Jul 21, 2023 4:30 pm
Nobert carefully makes his way back to where he left the two other. Upon meeting Albert he explains the situation as he saw it in one fell breath: "There are eleven women dancing arond a stone table. They don't have clothes on either. There was one womand going around, but I saw no others. So that makes twelve women and girls. I don't think they were armed."

After a deep breath he adds clearly dismayed:"Some of them know my mother..." At those words the dogs puts it head against his leg and Norbert pats her absendminded.

Did you get around to the cages?
Jul 21, 2023 7:37 pm
"Yeah, we saw Theo. He's not looking too good. But as far as I could tell still breathing." Albert tells Norbert. "I've sent Daryl ahead to the others, we should return too and tell them all of this."

As they make their way back, he continues. "So some are familiar to you? Do you think they'd recognize you? And would that be a good thing?"
OOC:
I think we can assume all of the info about the witches and cages is also shared with the rest of the group.
Jul 22, 2023 6:40 pm
"They will probably recognise me as I look pretty similar to my brothers and father, Albert. But I don't think that will make any difference seeing I'm a boy and not supposed to be in these woods."

After a little while he adds :"I hope they won't put up a real fight. I would be very opposed to hurting them ... any more then I hurt the women from before. Hopefully you will be able to talk them out of the fight and the sacrifice."
