The Sacrifice Camp (RP)

Jul 12, 2023 3:54 pm
Continues from The First Sacrifice.

The sun is not yet peeking in through the trees when the party sets off in search of the camp. It has now been more than a day since Daryl walked these woods and the dog keeps losing his scent and the party has to backtrack or hope Daryl's memory --while travelling the other way-- can set them on the right path.

The drumming stopped before the light --one wonders what that means-- so that can not help guide you to the camp. But after many hours Daryl finally says. "This is it. I know it. Just past that stream is the cage where I was kept."

Die of Fate:
1: You get there in the nick of time, and are discovered as you approach.
2: You get there in the nick of time. The ceremony has started.
3: You get there in the nick of time. The ceremony has started, but you can prepare and then act to stop the sacrifice.
4: You get there in the nick of time. The ceremony has not yet started, and you can prepare and act to stop it.
5: You get there in the nick of time. The ceremony has not yet started, you can see Theo still in the cage.
6: You get there with some time to spare. You can see Theo still in the cage Daryl mentioned.

As Daryl speaks there is a shout of surprise from off to one side. A naked woman was doing her business and is startled by men being there. She tries to cover herself and also run back to the camp while calling for help.

You have not heard a response from the camp direction, so you may still be able to prevent her from sounding the alarm.

What do you do?
Jul 13, 2023 7:39 am
The woman's nudity scarcely registers on Olden as he looks first towards Norbert's dog and then for other ways to discourage the woman. He takes his tool-belt off - a wide D-loop affair with pockets aplenty and weighted metal pieces at either end.

He swirls it around a couple of times, takes careful aim at the woman's legs and lets loose.

Not much of a bola this, and I'm not likely to hit her but, Selusia, please let me not do that woman any serious harm!
OOC:
A roll? Something with a nice disadvantage considering the lousy makeshift ranged "weapon" perhaps?
Jul 13, 2023 9:45 am
Taking Olden's action as permission to act and seeing the woman to far of to rush her, Norbert decides on his sling. He has not used it in some time but he used to practice a lot on trees and branches out of boredom. He grabs the first pebble he finds and hurls it at the woman.

Albert is startled but tries to react to the situation quickly. Not sure yet if he should attack with intent to hurt, he decides to take a different course of action. Maybe it's the helplessness of being naked or the fact that it's a woman, but he's suddenly not as eager to strike anymore.

Using his broomstick to push shrubs away and vault over obstacles, he tries to run ahead of the woman and stop her from getting to, what he assumes will be, the camp.

Norbert's sling shot strikes the fleeing woman in the shoulder at the same time that Olden's belt-bola tangles round her ankles with a painful sounding 'twack' of buckles. She cries out as she falls, both trying to cover her nudity and protect her body and face from the rough, root-rutted and stony ground.

Albert is barely able to catch up to her before she starts to tumble. He could try to catch her, but can be pretty sure he will get a handful of something intimate in the process.

Roald has not had many encounters with naked women, and is a bit flustered at first. When he sees Albert taking off after the woman he starts running too.
Jul 15, 2023 12:29 am
Being younger and faster than Albert he quickly catches up, he nimbly jumps over branches and fallen trees.

Gently he holds the woman's arm, while at the same time avoiding any delicate parts. He notices the bruise on her shoulder from the pebble of Norbert"s sling. He puts his hand on her mouth to prevent her from screaming.
"I'm sorry you got hurt, we will not use any more violance if you promise not to scream."
With his free hand he untangles the knot that holds his cloak and chivalrously throws it over her naked body.

- Roald -

You dexterously manage to avoid any unnecessary touching, but the woman still struggles against your hand over her mouth, not fully realising that you probably saved her from a nasty fall.

Her eyes look defiant, but she is surprised when you cover her from view. Several thoughts pass over her face, but at last she nods, acquiescing to your threat.

When you remove your hand she glares at you. "Can't stand the sight of a real woman." She mocks, but you notice she has not removed the cloak and in fact clutches it to herself in relief.

"You..." She says, looking around at the group of men. "You are not supposed to be here." But there is some hidden doubt in her voice that you can't identify yet.

What do you do?
Jul 15, 2023 9:54 am
Olden winces and hangs his head briefly as hears the painful sound of his belt buckle making contact. I've got amends to make ... and not just to this woman, he thinks as he shuffles forward, pulls a handful of crushed herbs and an old handkerchief out.

"Forgive me, lass, and allow me. This will help with the bruising and will quickly dull the pain," he says in a subdued voice, as he places the herbs on the purpling skin and gently ties his kerchief around her calf, just below Roald's cloak. The triage complete, he steps away without a word and looks at his companions.
OOC:
I'm assuming the woman isn't going to (or won't be in a position to) object to the "first aid". Olden's got the Heal skill in his list
Jul 15, 2023 11:59 am
Albert puts his stick on the ground, ready to try and trip the woman as she runs past, when the belt latches on and realizes the woman will fall directly onto his broomhandle if he doesn't act. He would have tried to catch the woman, but ... not if there's a chance of his bar's last memento breaking in the process.

Luckily for him, and the woman, Roald's quickness saves the day. He breaths a sigh of relief while impressed with his companions. I don't know what your plans are, Raynor, but you sure put us together to great effect. He thinks before moving on.

"Stay here for a bit, I'll go see if anyone else noticed." He tells the others and does a quick surveillance of the area to make sure nobody else is near.

- Olden -

If your prisoner objects to you touching her legs there is not much she can do about it, especially not until after you untangle the ensnaring belt --which we can assume you do unless you say otherwise. She glares at you defiantly but can see what you are doing and is puzzled by your care.

It looks like she wants to say something acerbic, but is unsure how strictly the promise to not make a sound will be interpreted. She settles for pulling her legs and feet in under the cloak as her act of defiance.

You might notice that her feet are dirty and scratched and bruised, as though she has been walking around in the forest barefoot, but that all looks recent, like up until a few hours ago this was not the case.

You can hear the faint sound of people over in the direction Daryl indicated --Daryl is blushing furiously and does not know where to look, and will have come away with you if you let him. There no uproar or commotion to suggest your scuffle was noticed.

Unless you go quite far away, and past the stream, you can't see the camp or even the cage. You might be able to catch a glimpse of the cage if you are careful, and Daryl indicated that the camp was out of sight from the cage on its far side.

What do you do?
Jul 15, 2023 4:25 pm
Norbert goes with Albert towards the camp. He feels relieved that he isn't the only one who is so uncomfortable around the naked woman. Even covered up he does no seem to be able to look at the bruise he caused her. "Should I try to sneek closer, Albert?" He asks well before they get to the stream.
Jul 16, 2023 7:46 pm
Roald speaks to the woman in a soft voice.
'' you can relax, we won't harm you. My name is Roald, what is yours?''

We are looking for our friends, they were last seen in this forest, do you know something about them?''

We heard drums during the night, it seems like some kind of feast is going on...''

"No. Thank you." Your prisoner says to Roald, turning her nose up at the offer of a drink. "Your friends ain't round here." She says, but it is a pretty bad lie. "Just us women folk, doin a, uh, 'powerment... thing. Men ain't sposed to be here." She clutches the cloak to herself tighter at this reminder.

She does not sound very bright, and you doubt she really knows what is going on or is an 'independent thinker'. This means you could possibly trick her, but there is little chance of having a reasoned discussion to change her mind.

What do you do with her?
Jul 16, 2023 9:29 pm
'' They're not ?'' Roald says with fake surprise in his voice.
'' that's highly unfortunate for us... And for you as well I'm afraid ''
Roald takes a pause to watch the woman's reaction. Before he continues.
'' you see, if our friends would have been here we would 've taken you back to camp under our protection. But if they are not here... We will have to return and search somewhere else. The problem is of course, what we should do with you. The only thing I can come up with is taking you with us until we are far enough from your camp, that when we release you there is no risk of your friends coming after us. Let's say a day or 2 or maybe when we reach the village. People will probably want to know where you were and where your clothes are and such...

Are you really sure you haven't seen them? Let me describe them to you.''

Roald gives an elaborate description of the 2 boys, giving the woman time to think things through.

"Hmm. I don't know." Albert tells Norbert "Looks like there's nobody else around here. Wonder what that woman was doing out here all alone?" He looks behind at the group who still seems to be busy with the captured woman. "We may have some time to try and get a look at that camp."

He gestures at Daryl to join them. "Daryl, do you know where to go from here? If we can just find where they are keeping the prisoners, we can bust them out."

"Hey, I just had a crazy idea. If they have Theo and Phil, and we have that woman. Maybe we can negotiate an exchange."

- Albert -

"I never saw the camp." Daryl apologises. "When I got away I ran in the opposite direction. If we can get to the cage --it is just over there-- we may be able to free Theo and Phil." He agrees, though that does not address the possible issue of the mayor's daughter --who is also Theo's sister-- and Theo is unlikely to leave without her.
Jul 17, 2023 9:26 am
Olden steps forward slowly and carefully extricates the woman's legs from his belt, taking care to secure the belt to his waist.

He waits patiently with a smile tugging the corner of his mouth, as he sees Roald trying his mix of charm and a bit of fear on the woman.

"He's a good sort, my companion there is, don't let him scare you. Why not help him find his friends? Your feet, lass, really could use a bit of rest and some of that willowbark that grows near our camp" he says, pointing at her abraded feet."

Your prisoner looks offended at your comment about her feet. You get the feeling you have accidentally pushed on a metaphorical sore-spot. You can't know this, but she is rather proud of how her feet look, and has been worrying about what all this traipsing around unclad has been doing to them.

She does not seem to hear the rest of your words at all, fixated as she is on the perceived insult.
OOC:
Roald can continue with his 'intimidation', this presumably happened before and around the same time as his words above.
Jul 17, 2023 3:26 pm
- Norbert -

Your 'sentry' is less of a sentry and more 'just another woman doing her own thing', it is easy to skirt around her, and then to use her tracks to get you to where you can hear the sounds of many feet, and some light chanting.

You don't know this part of the valley, but you had not heard about there being a stone table in the middle of a clearing. The table stands below an old crooked oak tree, which leans east over the clearing.

Sunlight streams into the clearing, forming a rough circle around the dancers. The dancers are all adult women --of various ages-- and all naked. There are eleven of them dancing --of you look close enough to count-- which might seem a strange number to anyone who knows about such things. There are at least two other women out there (your prisoner and the 'sentry' you passed).

You don't see any sign of the mayor's daughter, or Theo or Phil (presumably you did not get to see the cage while dodging 'sentries'?). All the women look like locals to you. Some of them are friends of your mum. There are a few trying to guide some of the less nimble to the 'correct steps' but no one looks to be 'in charge'.

"While we're waiting for Norbert to get back, let's go and check out that cage you were talking about." Albert tells Daryl. "Since you said they are 'just over there' that shouldn't take too long. Then we can come back and exchange information to come up with a plan."

As said, Albert carefully and slowly walks in the indicated direction, trying to stay behind cover when possible and keeping an eye out for any movement in front of him.

"Wait." She says. "I will be a good girl, just don't leave me here. I want to go home." It is almost as though she does not hear the the rest of what you say, fixating on the talk of leaving. Her lip quivers and you realise she was trying not to cry instead of refusing to speak.

After a little probing you get her admit guiltily. "I didna 'spect it to go like this. By the time they started talking about sacrifice I's in too deep... and I didna know what they meant." (You suspect this is only partially true.) "I didna speak to the girl --none of us did-- but she seems nice, and, you know, just a girl in the end. I don want to hurt her, please take me with you."

She seems quite willing to betray her fellow women, but also willing to leave the mayor's daughter to her fate just so long as she does not have to do the deed herself. At least she has confirmed that the girl is here.

You don't meet anyone on you way to the cage, it is easy to hide in the forest foliage. However, the ground around the cage is bare, with nowhere to hide, so getting closer will be more challenging.

From your vantage point a dozen or so paces away you can see that Theo is alone, he looks in bad shape, either sleeping or unconscious, but still breathing.

What do you do?
Jul 19, 2023 8:30 pm
Roald stares at the woman, who now apears to be just a girl.
"Alright, I believe you. But I'm afraid it is not that simple. If this girl is in trouble we have a duty to help her, we cannot leave her with these witches! That is what they are? right?"

"We'll wait for our friends to return, and then we will come up with a plan. Maybe you can be a part of this and return home a hero instead of a witch, wouldn't that be fantastic? I'm sure there is a reward in it as well."
Jul 19, 2023 8:39 pm
That doesn't look good. Poor Theo. Albert thinks as he looks at the cage. Then continues in a whisper. "We'll get you out of there, buddy." He takes a moment to survey the immediate area around the cage, taking note in his head of things like the distance to a tree-line or any 'guards' in sight. "I don't see Phil or the girl anywhere." he softly tells Daryl.

When he feels he knows enough, he takes a step back, hiding in the shrubs once again. Quietly, he prays to Raynor. "Raynor, please protect the young ones who have been taken by these savage women. And help us guide these women towards your light, for they have not felt the warmth of your benevolence in their life. So that we can bring the children home safely."

After focusing on his breath for a minute or so, he opens his eyes again and heads back to where Norbert split off. "Daryl, please go and tell the others what we've seen already. I'll wait for Norbert."
Jul 19, 2023 8:39 pm
- Roald -

"What? They're 'witches'?" She asks, grasping at straws. "So... it's ... not my fault?" If she can blame her actions on 'witches' that would absolve her of 'blame' in her mind.

The promise of heroics is not yet a significant factor in her decision process, but you may be able to use such ideas to gain her aid in whatever you do next.
Jul 19, 2023 8:45 pm
- Albert -

"No." Daryl agrees. "I did not see Phil after I woke up before I left. Theo was inconsolable and not making sense except to go get you, but we never knew about a girl. Sorry"

At your instruction he quickly runs back to Roald, Olden, Limpy and the woman to tell then what you know.
Jul 21, 2023 2:11 am
Olden adds quietly, "It's all the witches' fault? You think the folks back home will buy that? Tongues wag, yes lass?"

"Now think what the same folk might say of you if you help save them. You could walk ... proudly .

Olden turns around as he thinks he hears something. "Time's running out, I think."
Jul 21, 2023 4:30 pm
Nobert carefully makes his way back to where he left the two other. Upon meeting Albert he explains the situation as he saw it in one fell breath: "There are eleven women dancing arond a stone table. They don't have clothes on either. There was one womand going around, but I saw no others. So that makes twelve women and girls. I don't think they were armed."

After a deep breath he adds clearly dismayed:"Some of them know my mother..." At those words the dogs puts it head against his leg and Norbert pats her absendminded.

Did you get around to the cages?
Jul 21, 2023 7:37 pm
"Yeah, we saw Theo. He's not looking too good. But as far as I could tell still breathing." Albert tells Norbert. "I've sent Daryl ahead to the others, we should return too and tell them all of this."

As they make their way back, he continues. "So some are familiar to you? Do you think they'd recognize you? And would that be a good thing?"
OOC:
I think we can assume all of the info about the witches and cages is also shared with the rest of the group.
Jul 22, 2023 6:40 pm
"They will probably recognise me as I look pretty similar to my brothers and father, Albert. But I don't think that will make any difference seeing I'm a boy and not supposed to be in these woods."

After a little while he adds :"I hope they won't put up a real fight. I would be very opposed to hurting them ... any more then I hurt the women from before. Hopefully you will be able to talk them out of the fight and the sacrifice."
Jul 23, 2023 8:15 am
Roald listens in silence to the scouting reports. When everyone is done speaking he says:
'' So no one has seen the girl, that's a pity. If we'd know where they are keeping her we could try something stealthy and avoid a fight. I guess that's out of the question now.''

He closes his eyes for a couple of seconds and prays in silence. He is still a bit uncomfortable saying the words out loud.

Jul 23, 2023 5:53 pm
Norberts' hart sinks at Roalds' words. He also closes his eyes and his shoulders sag. "If there is no other way." He says and grips his axe.

"Are we all going together or do we spilt up to get Theo first?"
Jul 23, 2023 6:34 pm
"Poor you." The woman scoff at Norbert's objection that 'some of them know his mother'. "One of them is my mother." This obviously complicates her acting against them, but also has broader implications about her abandoning the whole affair.

"I can go watch them for you." Limpy offers eagerly.

"It's your friends' lives at peril so this is just a suggestion," says Olden. "Sounds to me like someone could get Theo out while they are ... distracted," the last said while subconsciously fingering his mallet and what looks like a slim jim tool. "Wouldn't pay for them to grab him again."

Olden then looks thoughtfully at the woman, starts saying something before subsiding into silence.
Jul 26, 2023 8:53 pm
Albert nods to Olden "You're right. Theo should be gotten as soon as possible. He needs medical attention urgently." He looks around. "I'm not sure that this is a good place to set up a base of operation. It might be too easy for them to find."

He thinks for a minute. Then speaks up again. "Here's my idea. 2 or 3 of us head to the other side of this 'village' and start a campfire. Put lots of pine branches on it to cause a lot of smoke. The others wait near the cage until they see the smoke and notice that the witches are distracted. That's the time to go free Theo. The first group will then circle back to help the others escape safely." He looks around the group for input.

"What do you think?"

"Um..." Dylan mutters. "What about Phil... and the girl?" He adds quickly, as though he may have forgotten about her again.

Limpy looks up at the sun, which is soon going to be directly overhead. "When do you think the ... um... thing will happen? I always pictured it as a 'midnight, under the full-moon deal', right? But then you say they are already dancing now?"

Your prisoner scoff at this last part, as if trying to elevate herself over the 'stupid male assumptions'.

"Is it a good idea to give the witches a sign we are here? Why not surprise them? The cages did not seem to be guarded? Why the diversion?" Norbert responds to Albert. "If we all go to Theo, set him free and then go on to the witches we won't lose any extra time. When did they plan for the sacrifice to start, uhm ... lady." directing the last sentence at the young still naked lady under the coat.

"Of course" Albert tells Daryl (/Dylan? ;) ) "We'll get them too. But it appears getting Theo might be a quick and easy thing. We should take advantage of that before continuing."

"Well, just because we didn't see a guard when we were looking, doesn't mean there isn't one around somewhere." He replies to Norbert's suggestion. "But you may be right. It would save us time and effort to go only for the cage."
Jul 28, 2023 7:14 am
'' OK, let us all go for the cage first, maybe Theo has extra information about Phil and the girl.''

Roald stands and tightens his sword belt. He unsheaths his sword and tests the edge with his thumb. Being the son of a butcher he is used to keeping his blades sharp but lately he has been neglecting the maintenance.

'' Mighty fine job Olden, thank you very much.''

After a few test swings he puts it back in the sheath.

Lady looks at you sulkily when you say you are going to leave her, it is hard to tell what her reaction is to the talk of 'tying her up'. She folds her arms beneath the borrowed cloak but stays sitting on the ground.

As you approach the cage the Theo looks much the same as before --unconscious but breathing. There is movement in the trees on the far side, but you don't know if it is a lookout, someone wandering off for a pee-break, --or if they are looking in this direction if it is-- or something else or nothing at all.

You can scout around and check or wait till you are sure the coast is clear, but that will take time and the drumming and chanting has increased in intensity. Or you can risk going to get Theo now, you will have to be very quiet (with the lock, and the rusty door, and the poor boy) or risk being noticed.

What do you do?
Aug 4, 2023 8:36 pm
"Right, there he is, see?" Albert tells the others when they reach Theo's location. "That cage looks pretty sturdy. Is anyone good at picking locks by chance?" He imagines chances of that are slim, but asks anyway.

"I still don't see any guards, it was like that a few minutes ago too. When Daryl and I were here." He takes another good look around. "It might be safe enough just to go and get him."
Aug 5, 2023 3:10 am
Olden unslings his shield, bows his head briefly against it, eyes closed, and then reseats said shield.

"As Albert says, we'd best grab Theo while we can. I can help with that lock," he says pointing at a padlock of unknown type on the cage. He starts talking in a low but almost eager sounding voice, pulling out a leather wallet from his belt and spreading out a variety of instruments including picks, pins, two files, a wrench and some skeleton keys.

"I know what you're thinking," he says wagging a finger and seeming to inspect the lock, "but this ain't it. You'll be surprised how many wanderers stop at wayfarers' shrines and complain about no longer being able to open the rusty old lock on Da's chest. The biggest problem is not the lock. It's in making sure that they really are travellers and not highwaymen come upon some booty."

"Someone keep watch while I work on the lock please. My hands aren't as nimble as they used to so be prepared to grab him and run if I slip and make a racket." With that he starts working on the padlock in earnest, discarding keys quickly, trying to pick one pin at a time and, when that fails, resorting to his trusted raking technique, face screwed up in concentration.

Unlike the old and stuck locks on your "travellers'" chests, this one was put on recently --after Daryl escaped. It looks like someone --Theo probably-- has tried to hit it with a rock --there is crumbled rock-dust below-- but you are able to repair it and get it open in no time.

The hinges are a bit rusty from being out in the rain of a few days ago, but a little preemptive oil stops them from squeaking very loudly as you open the door and allow the group to get to the unconscious Theo.
Aug 5, 2023 8:21 am
The cage is open without indecent, it does not seem like anyone noticed. Theo is 'free' but still unconscious, he does not respond to light stimuli.

Aug 5, 2023 10:54 am
"That does sound like something that would happen at a wayfarers." Albert agrees, though he's a little bit taken aback by the amount of tools that Olden keeps pulling out of his pockets. This man is prepared for any situation. I may need to step up my own game. He makes a mental note to ask Olden for some preparation tips somewhere down the line.

After a quick discussion on who does what, he goes with Olden to keep an eye out while he works on the lock. Turns out Olden is not just all talk. As if guided by a divine power, the lock opens without much resistance. "Well done, Olden. Seems like you were meant to join us." He smiles and pats the man on the back.

"Norbert, can you have the dog keep watch while we carry Theo to safety?" He steps into the cage to see how Theo is doing. "He's unconscious." Albert says, quite worried about the state Theo is in. "We should probably get him to safety before helping him, though. You never know when the women might show up."
Aug 5, 2023 11:03 am
Daryl is quite distraught at how bad Theo's conditions has become, he is clearly second-guessing his decision to leave and go for help, flogging himself with all those standard "maybe I should have stayed, maybe I could have done something ..." doubts.

"Maybe 'Lady' can watch him?" Limpy suggests. "Unless..." He waggles his eyebrows at Albert and Roald probably hinting that he wants to see another miracle, like when Daryl passed out or with his leg.

What do you do?
Aug 5, 2023 11:08 am
Roald grabs Theo under the shoulder on one side. Trusting Albert will get the other side they start dragging Theo out of the cage. The damn thing is just not big enough to stand up straight which makes carrying Theo in a decent way impossible for the first couple of meters.

''Daryl, limpy help us out here will you, take his legs so we can bring him out of sight quickly.''

When Theo is safe between some bushes, Roald walks back to the cage. He spotted a moldy blanket in the corner before.
With some branches and grass he fills up the blanket to make it look like someone is sleeping... Well from a far anyway.
He closes the gate and clicks the lock shut.
Aug 5, 2023 12:42 pm
Norbert kneels next to the dog and whispers in its ear. After a few seconds the dog moves to the edge of the clearing. There it plants itself on her belly under a brush and seems to turn in a statue.

Seeing the dog depart Norbert turns to Daryl: "Theo is Lucky that you came to get help. These men are his only chance at surviving this I fear."
Aug 5, 2023 1:32 pm
"You really think so?" Daryl asks Norbert with a pleading tone in his voice. He has taken a little heart from the encouragement, and that argument does sound reasonable, but nothing changes the fact that he left his friend, or that he was responsible for getting his friend into this whole 'adventure' deal in the first place. It might take a while for him to come to terms with everything.

Between you all you are able to get Theo out and away from the cage, the blanket dummy looks convincing enough from a distance --which may be mostly an indication of how bad Theo looked.

A little water on his parched lips causes Theo to lick them, taking in some liquid, but if you try to give him more than that he will choke. It will take a long time to re-hydrate him at this pace.

What do you do?
Aug 6, 2023 1:34 pm
My lady be praised, Olden thinks letting out a long breath.

Seeing the less than successful attempts to revive Theo, he calls out, "Not too much water or he'll choke, and loosen his clothing if you can. He needs smelling snuff to revive him. Daryl, you and your friend are from around here. Seen a plant with sharp, silvery, rubbery leaves around here? Alewort some call it? Those leaves when crushed might do."

So saying, and seeing that the others have Theo secured, he rushes ahead in the direction of their previous stop, eyes scanning left and right.

"A 'plant'?" Daryl inquires. "No... I have not seen anything like that." But it sounds more like he has not paid any attention to plants. Limpy shakes his head as well, he too in not familiar with plants.

Maybe Norbert will have seen such plants and be able to help you search?

You do know that merely shocking Theo into wakefulness without dealing with the cause of his condition could do him harm. It might help you get a few words out of him, but will not help his body heal or replenish his strength or deal with his starvation and dehydration.

Aug 6, 2023 5:22 pm
"Olden, can you help me look at Theo's leg?" Albert asks, kneeling down next to the boy. "Moving Theo seems to have opened up a wound here." He notices some blood trickling down his leg. Even though Albert doesn't know much about this, he's smart enough to know that these kind of things can get infected. Especially out in the wilderness.
Aug 7, 2023 5:18 am
Seeing the blood on Theo's leg make Roald grab the handle of his sword. His knuckles turn white from the firm grip.
If I get my hands on who is responsible for this...
He doesn't speak a word but is breathing heavily through his nose.
Calm yourself now, Roald. There's still 2 others to rescue first.
He kneels next to Theo, touches his forehead and prayes in silence so no one will hear the anger in his voice.

please Raynor help my friend through this ordeal, give him back some strength to walk and talk. Give all of us the strength and courage to put an end to these demonic rituals.

"Do we go to the altar now?" Norbert asks with a tremor in his voice. He doesn't really look at anyone in particular. It is difficult to judge what Norberts mood is, maybe it is anger, maybe stress for a fight...
Aug 8, 2023 11:08 am
"Not yellow, no, lads, Alewoet grows in clumps and has these thick, grey, rubbery leaves. Was hoping that'd wake him up and he could then help us find the problem but I think we're running out of time."

Olden shakes his head, then scratches his head, and starts ransacking his pack in haste.
He looks up suddenly at Albert's words, sidling up to take a look. "The beasts," he mutters as he feels Theo's forehead and then starts gently feeling around the wound.

"A fever, and redness, and swelling in his leg. The wound might be getting infected. Hot water, some vinegar and clean wrappings will help." He curses as he continues "Till such a time, some of this vile spirit ... and oh honey might help tide him over."

He holds his hip flask up in query. "That's going to itch like mad, leave an ugly scar. What do you all think?"

Theo's leg is washed and wrapped, but there is no sigh of Alewort or anything else that could help in this area. Before you can do more for the lad the sounds coming from the 'witches' camp change...

A hush falls on the chanting, and the drumming slows to a almost unheard steady thump-thump that could just be your hearts beating.

You hear a pitiful cry of protest that sounds like a girl begging people to stop.

Roald stands and unsheats his sword.

'' Seems to me they just forced our hands, nothing to do but leave Theo here in the bushes, make our way to the altar and rescue the girl. If one of us could capture or immobilize the leader we might avoid unnecessary bloodshed. I think most of these women are like the girl we found earlier, in their hearts they know that what they are about to do is wrong ''

If there is a leader and if it's possible to see if someone is standing out...

Roald keeps his thoughts to himself, he knows none of them like hurting, let alone killing people.
Aug 8, 2023 7:19 pm
Albert is torn between helping Theo and helping the girl. He looks around at the others, with a conflicted look on his face. With Olden out of options for regular healing, and Roald already in the mindset of saving the girl, he feels he's the one to help Theo right now. "Leave me here with Theo. I will try my best to help him and will join you as soon as I am able."

He nods at Roald, knowing he would understand. "Olden, your shield might be a good way to symbolize that you're not of hurtful intent."

Bowing his head to the group, he adds "May Raynor's fire bolster your actions, friends."
Aug 10, 2023 6:52 pm
"Stay close to me, Daryl. I'll feel safer for it." Norbert says to the young man.

He runs over to the dog. After a few seconds the dog trots over to Theo, sits beside him and licks his face a couple of times. If there is no reaction he lays his head on Theo's leg and appears to fall in sleep.

"As ready as I'll ever be, Road."
Aug 11, 2023 11:20 am
Once everyone is clear about the next steps and most are heading off to save the girl, and likely Phil, Albert bows himself over Theo.
"I don't know if you're a religious person,... Lady" The 'name' feels odd to him. "But, if you were to join me in prayer, I would greatly appreciate it." Then he puts a hand on Theo's chest, about where his heart should be.

"Raynor, once again, I must call upon your divine power to aid an ally in the cause. This boy has been maimed by those who wish to do a thing that has long been abolished by the ones of faith. Sacrificing innocent life to please a higher power. I'm sure you are aware of the goings on in this place.

I implore you to break through this area of misguided intentions and give Theo the fire he needs to stand up and address the situation at our side. Your side."

After this, he solemnly starts a common prayer to Raynor. Hoping that Theo might be healed.

"Meh." Lady shrugs at your offer for her to join you, she does not seem interested in another 'cult' --this one lacking the needed peer-pressure-- and merely sits sulkily trying to ignore you. She scoffs softly at your words of prayer... until the power starts to flow.

As you finish and look up she has reached out a hand to lay it beside yours on Theo's chest, her cloak has fallen from one shoulder to gird her like a warrior's toga --shoulder to opposite hip-- and her eyes are alight and eager with fire.

"We have to stop that evil woman!" She declares with more confidence in her voice than you have heard so far.

Did you get any hint of what passed between Lady and Raynor?
Theo's breathing eases and his fever seems to abate. He turns his head seeking water and is now strong enough to manage drinking by himself. He is still weak, but whispers a plea for you to help his sister.

Aug 11, 2023 1:03 pm
To his surprise, Albert feels Lady's hand joining his on Theo's chest. As Raynor's light flows through him as a conduit, he can sense that part of it is diverting to her instead of Theo. For a second he gets the urge to shove her off. After all, Theo needs this and she is or was part of the 'problem'. But Albert remembers his own words from a second ago. "Raynor will conquer our heart." And why not conquer two at the same time if they are on offer. He smirks, realizing Raynor's plan.

Ignoring the woman's words for now, he tries to tend to Theo's needs first. "Bring me that waterskin, please." He asks Lady and proceeds to bring it to Theo's lips. "It's alright, Theo. Have some water and rest. Daryl, Norbert, and Roald are already on their way to your sister. Along with some new friends of ours." He can't help but have a reassuring smile on his face. All doubts that filled his head minutes ago have been pushed out by the light. They'll surely return, but not for now.

After making sure that Theo is fine, he addresses Lady. "You're right, we do have to stop her. And preferably it should be as peaceful as possible." He takes her hand and holds it between the two of his. "For that we need your help. What can you tell us about these women? What could change their minds? Who is leading them? Anything can be helpful."

Roald hunches down as he walks along the edge of the clearing. The chants and screaming of the Girl overpowers any noise they make.
'' better be quiet anyway, let's remain unseen for as long as possible ''
Slowly they approach the circle with the altar, al the time checking to see who is taking the lead and if immediate action is required to rescue the girl.
Aug 13, 2023 12:14 pm
It seems like the girl has just now realised what the actual intent is and her pleading ramps up into screams for help as she is dragged towards the stone table.

Even though it is screwed up in fear, the girl's face looks familiar, as though you have spent the past few days with her --though that could just be that is Theo's sister and bears a familial resemblance. She is the only one wearing anything, they have decked her in a simple, white, floor-length shift, and tied flowers in her loose hair.

She is being held by two women who are being directed by a large fat woman with a strange grin on her face. Nine other women continue to dance in a circle around them.

There are squeals of shock as women everywhere turn to look in his direction in surprise, trying to cover themselves with the hands, and with carried drums for those who have them.

"They are just women from the farms and the village." Lady answers, sounding a lot more erudite now in her confidence, but also sounding a fair bit more scathing about her fellows of a moment ago. It almost sounds like she had to restrain herself from putting the word 'silly' in front of 'women'.

"I think this is all 'Aunty Nicki's' doing? Though she isn't my Aunty, and even my mum calls her that?" Lady sounds a little confused at this part, but she shrugs it off --doing interesting things with the only half-concealing toga. "Aunty Nicki has been going around convincing all the women that 'men are bad' and that we have been mistreated... I have not been 'treated' at all, I will have you know, the men mostly ignored me... and that we... I can't remember exactly what we were doing, or why." She sound more indignant about this than confused.

"It got more and more... er... 'more', y'know? Started with some 'help each other' and now it is 'sacrificing', and I don even know what for. What good does a sacrifice do us? I think there was talk of it bringing us... something... posteriors? No that was not it..."

She thinks for a moment before bursting out: "Hey! Why are we sacrificing a girl!?" She demands. "I though it was suppose to be about helping women!" With that she strides off in the direction of the camp, her indignation showing (along with a lot of other parts of her also showing).

Focusing very hard on not looking at all the naked women around him (maybe he will have to face the sooner or later for an errand from his mother), he asks the girl on the altar: "Are you OK, can you walk?" And he helps her down and on her feet, supporting her if necessary.

He is also trying very hard not to look at the beautiful girl in his arms with the beautiful eyes and the beautiful ... 'FOCUS NORBERT' he reminds himself and is happy he still remembers his own name. What would her name be? 'NO FOCUS'

The thought of how she knows his name passes shortly through his mind, but the 'don't drop her thought is a lot stronger. 'Please Raynor, don't let me drop this girl' He prays to Alberts's god. The scene behind him is completely forgotten. He faintly hears the witch and Roald but is almost unaware of Limpy and the rest of the women.

Albert, still walking behind Lady, hears commotion as they make their way through the woods. Then, behind a thick bush, he spots the others. Quite a few others, actually. And most of them are naked...

"I think that's.. Yes, that has to be Roald and Norbert. And.. Is that the girl? Oh thank the gods she's safe!"

In a bit of an awkward spot, Albert follows behind Lady at a distance. He suspects that she won't have any trouble getting to where she is wanting to go. That might make it easier for Norbert to get to him. Then he notices what's going on when Roald shouts. As he walks, he does a quick prayer in his head.

Raynor, please don't let this turn into a place of bloodshed. Keep Roald on the path of light. He doesn't want to openly call for Roald to stop, as that might encourage the women to take action. Then again.. If Roald hurts her, it might be too late to do anything about it.
Aug 27, 2023 12:06 am
The trembling in her voice convinces Roald she is telling the truth.

'' walk with me'' Roald says in a soft voice while nudging the woman in the right direction.
'' Here's what's going to happen if you behave: we're going to walk to that cage over there where I will lock you in. If everyone stays calm and they don't come after us, no one will get hurt and you'll never hear from us again. If you stop sacrificing humans, that is. Once we are out of sight you can call on your followers to set you free. Now tell them to stay calm. I don't like hurting people, but I'll damn well will if I have to.

"What?! The cage?!" The woman squawks at your threat. "But it is locked. I don't know where the key is."

"I don't want to go anywhere with you... like this!" She objects loudly enough to be heard by everyone, she sounds genuinely scared of the prospect of being dragged, naked, into the woods and away from the other women.

Hearing this, the other women continue to move around slowly, they are not being hostile, but have moved to block your exit. "Hey! Let her go! You brute!" They yell (along with other, less polite, things).

Suddenly a proud, regal, warrior woman wearing a toga that covers half her body --which is a lot more than most women here, but also, somehow, draws more attention to the naked parts-- strides up to you, focused on the girl in your arms. She shoves aside a few of the women that were sorta-passively-blocking your path and gestures for you to follow her.

Norbert stops for a second. Scans the woman, looks at her ... face. 'Oh' he thinks, seeing the lump on her forehead and recognises the woman from their first meeting, earlier this morning. She doesn't seem threatening and is going in the right direction. So let's start a little procession.

'This girl is getting heavy. Should I throw her in my neck like a sheep? No ... no she woulden't like that. I'll just have to hang in there.'

Norbert pulls her a little bit closer to his body upon wich she huggs herself even closer to him. "Almost there." Norbert says to her as much as himself.
Aug 29, 2023 5:43 pm
Albert rushes to Norbert when he springs forth from between the naked women. "Is she alright? Best bring her to Theo. Or you can give her to Lady." He looks from Lady to Norbert and gives him a wink. "She has seen Raynor's light. We can trust her."
Aug 31, 2023 2:12 pm
"I will stay with Roald and ... uhm ... Limpy." He says to the girl. "Stay with these people, they will take care of you and keep you safe." To Albert he says: "I get to you as soon as possible."

He turns around, takes his axe in hand and heads back to Roald without looking back. Looking back would probably have made his knees buckle. 'What is her name?'

Then he focuses his look on Albert and tries not to make eye-contact with any of the women around him. He grips his axe tight and moves back into the circle.

The girl clings to you when you try to pass her off to Lady. She looks scared of Lady and her strange garb --though you don't think she recognizes her as one of her captors. She holds out a pleading hand to you as Lady leads her away.

The women surrounding Roald are pushing and shoving, but keeping their aggression just below the level that would demand physical violence.

The women all around you are still shouting for you to let their friend go, your position of power and the knife to a woman's throat has angered them. They are pushing towards you those nearest you are trying to get the knife away from their friend, or their friend away from you.

Sharp as your knife is, it is going to be very hard to avoid doing her another injury if they keep up this barrage of not-quite-violent engagement.

Aug 31, 2023 8:53 pm
Albert asks Lady "Please, get her to Theo and keep an eye on them. If anything goes wrong, come get me." He then heads after Norbert to join the others in their attempt to stop this ritual.

Getting closer, he spots what exactly is going on with Roald and the women. From a few meters away, he says "Roald, she is safe. You can put the sword down. We're not here to spill blood, but to prevent it, aren't we?" The look in Roald's eyes is worrying him. To the women he says "We don't mean any of you harm, but we will fight if you make us. We can all leave in peace as long as we get to take our friends with us." Trying very hard not to look at their naughty parts.
OOC:
Is Albert anywhere near the 'altar' at this point? I might want to try a Raynor thing on it if that's an option.
Sep 1, 2023 6:17 am
Roald has had his eye on Albert since he came closer. Good thing he did, because else he would not have heard him over the shouting of the woman.

I don't want this

He assesses the situation as if he has left his own body. He sees himself standing, threatening an unarmed woman in the middle of an angry mob.

Then Albert gets through to him ''...safe...''

'' Alright woman, I'm going to let you go and we will retreat. Consider this a final warning: stop doing these rituals or we will be back.''
With that he releases the woman while pushing her in the direction of the others. He looks for the best way out, with the least opponents, sticks his sword in the air and starts running.

''WHAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!'' A deafening roar escapes his lips to scare away those in his path.

Roald's women, once released turns to look at the men, sees Daryl --who has approached with Albert-- looking hale and hearty, and declares: "See. I told you he was OK."

Then Roald's roar causes them all to scatter, in different directions, away into the trees --much to Limpy's disappointment and longing gaze.

Lady glares at the women --one in particular, but you might not be able to notice that-- and you can't say for sure if she is glad or sad that she did not have (or get) to fight anyone.

Some fleeing women are heading in Theo's direction, but he was fairly well hidden and should be OK.

As soon as the women scatter and the immediate danger seems to have passed Norbert turns to go after Lady. He looks forward to seeing the dog and Theo. If no-one mentions Phil to him, Nobert will be ready to leave. He forgot about him ...
Sep 2, 2023 9:08 pm
Albert is a bit surprised, but happy that they seem to have resolved this without injuring anyone. As Roald nears, he ask "where is Phil?"
In the corner of his eyes he sees the pagan altar not far away. Something about it rubs him the wrong way. Or is it pulling at him? A strange feeling none the less. Is it Raynor calling out to him to maybe destroy it? Or is he being influenced by another spiritual being? Does he have time to find out? These things go through his mind in a flash.
Sep 3, 2023 7:22 am
'' I don't know... And I'm not sure that she does.
I asked and she answered, but in the end it dawned on me she was talking about Daryl the whole time''
Sep 3, 2023 5:41 pm
"Oh No." Norbert mumbles while he stands back up. He was so surprised he actually stumbled, but he tries to play it off as if he just looks at something on the floor. Nobody will fall for that.

He whistles short and shrill. A few minutes later the dog comes pounding through the underbrush.

"Are you sure, Roald? Who else could know where Phill is. She is responsible for him." Norbert suddenly seems very tense and has a weird look in his eyes. Even when addressing Roald he does't really make eye-contact with him.
Sep 6, 2023 6:54 am
"That's not good." Albert replies to Roald. "Let's go talk to Theo first, then. Maybe he knows something." With his eyes lingering on the strange altar, he turns to head back to Theo.
Sep 9, 2023 1:22 pm
"Should we let her go, just like that." Norbert ask indicating the 'witch'. "Maybe we no to talk to her later. And it will be dificult to find her afterwards." and more as a afterthougt he whispers "What if she curses us."
Sep 9, 2023 6:06 pm
"Under Raynor's protection, I don't think we need to fear that, Norbert" Albert reminds him. "Besides, from what I gather, all of those women live nearby. I'm sure they won't be disappearing into thin air. They have families here."
Sep 11, 2023 2:56 pm
Roald agrees with Albert: "Let's regroup and try to find Phil"
Sep 17, 2023 4:15 pm
The group arrives back where you left Theo, with Lady standing guard over him while his sister is kneeling beside him, hugging him and inquiring about his well being. You can see Theo weakly patting her back and both trying to reassure her he is OK and enquirer about how she is.

At some point you might notice, off in the distance, all around, naked women trying to hide behind tress and bushes and rocks. They look lost and embarrassed more than threatening, but it is strange they have not gone and gotten their clothes.

What do you do?
Sep 20, 2023 6:42 pm
Norbert slowly walks up to old Berta (probably not much older than his mother, but old since he knew her). "Hey, you may not remember me, but I am Halbert youngest son. We live a mile or so south of you. I don't know what happend her or why. But maybe it's a good idea to get your clothes and leave. There was some evil afoot and I hope these brave men turned the tide here."
Sep 20, 2023 6:52 pm
- Norbert -

Berta looks even more embarrassed when she learns that you know her. "Halbert? Ya?" She agrees, trying to keep the bush between you and her.

"Our clothes are gone." She wails. "Or, at least, that's what young Berta said. But she lies." You know of the famously antagonistic relationship between Berta and her daughter --everyone does-- but all the other women seem to believe 'young Berta' and the more nimble ones who went to check.

"How am I going to explain this?" She asks you. "How am I going to get home?!"

What do you do?
Sep 22, 2023 5:47 pm
Albert rolls his eyes. "You can't be serious." He says, overhearing the conversation. "So all of you have no clothes?!? Well we're not tailors." He says in quite an annoyed voice. "And we also don't carry around multiple sets of clothes. So I suggest you all grab what greenery you can to cover up and follow us."

He walks up to Limpy to ask him something. "Limpy, where is the nearest house? Can we get to it without having to cross open terrain? Once we get these women inside, we can get clothing to them."
Sep 22, 2023 9:27 pm
- Albert -

Limpy's attention snaps back to you --he has been distracted by 'lookout duty'. "Hmm..." He says, scratching his chin. "They really have picked the most out of the way place, here. I suppose there is old Gralt's farm a few hours thata way." He points in what you think is the direction opposite to where you came from.

"But this is poor land." He admits. "No one here has 'spare' clothes. Especially for so many ..." he gets distracted again before remembering he is supposed to be a 'hero' or something. "The only place that might have something for them to wear is the baron's?" You estimate that the baron's place is about a day's walk from here, Barky's inn is along that route.

What do you do?
Sep 23, 2023 3:35 pm
Roald takes the others apart.
''Listen up, we got Theo and his sister, we rescued Lady, we stopped a murder and an evil ceremony. Is it really our job to clothe these women too? I say we let them sort it out on their own while we start searching for Phil. They know these lands better than us anyway.''
Sep 23, 2023 9:46 pm
"I get what you mean Roald." Albert agrees. "But I do feel bad for them. It seems like most were just dumb enough to follow the leader." He is clearly conflicted about the situation. If his friends are the 'good guys', then it makes sense to also rescue these lost women. "You want to just leave them here in the woods, naked?"

Albert might need a bit of persuasion to simply leave without them.
Sep 24, 2023 6:41 am
'' An hour ago they were happy being in the woods naked! I just don't think we can be of value at this point. They are from these parts and probably have friends and family that want to help them. ''
Roald thinks for a moment.

'' How about this: we leave them here while Lady and Limpy go to ask for clothing at nearby farms. Just for a few of them. The women with clothes can on their turn go home and bring more clothes for the ones left behind. That way we help them and are free to search for Phil ''

Roald sees Limpy's eyes sparkle with the thought of being left alone with a bunch of boobs.

'' Maybe Daryl wants to stay behind as well? I rather not have one of us alone searching for the rest''
Sep 25, 2023 6:07 am
"These clothes can't just have disappeared. Neither can Phil have. How about half of us and half of the women search the clothes. The other half searches for Phil." Norbert chips in.

He turns to Lady: "This is not a good time to argue with your mother, where did you see the clothes for the last time?"

He starts moving in the direction of where he found Lady. "Lets start at the beginning. And Roald, maybe some of the women know something about Phil."
Sep 25, 2023 6:30 am
"When we first got here Aunty Nicky had us all remove our clothes and they were... taken away?" Lady explains, not sounding at all embarrassed to be talking about such an act with a bunch of men while half her torso is on display.

"I don't know where." She shrugs --causing Limpy's eyes to track up and down in ardent delight, and Darryl to look away in embarrassment. "I don't know where Auntie Nicki went, I though she would be at the sacrifice. Maybe she has got them?" She does not show any shame at the mention of what they were going to do, but does sound disgusted and angry at it.

What do you do?
Sep 26, 2023 7:54 pm
"Aunty Nicky... " Albert thinks. "Isn't that Olga's sister? Should we go look there?" He wonders out loud. "But we can't bring the women, there are kids there."
OOC:
I'm honestly a bit confused about what we're doing next now. Is finding the clothes important to the story? Or are you trying to have us go that way because it will lead to Phil or something else?
Sep 27, 2023 5:19 am
When you get back, Theo has had a bit of a rest and some water and a little left-over bread and is strong enough to talk in full sentences, even if his sister is still a little... is she drunk? It sure looks that way...

When you fuss about missing Phil he looks sheepish and apologizes for the fib, explaining: "'Phil' is my sister. Theuphilda. We did not think you would let her come along if you knew, and she would no help us with the translation unless we let come... so we lied, to everyone." Daryl looks flabbergasted. Phil smiles beatifically at you all --especially Norbert.

"When I heard that dad was saying she had been taken we tried to go home, but, somehow ended up here. This 'Auntie Nikie' person must have done something to our minds? But I knew you would come and save us."
"We don't think 'Auntie Nicky' is anyone's actual 'aunt'... or sister." The consensus seems to be from everyone you include in the conversation. "She's just called that because... because that is what she told us to call her."

There is some angry muttering about why people followed her, or did what she said, and that devolves into a --obvious-- realization. "Hey! She took our clothes and ran away! Leaving us to do the..." People turn to Theuphilda (Phil for short), "We're right sorry about the whole virgin sacerfice business. Can't imagine how we ever thought that was a good idea or would solve our problems. This 'Nicky' person just seemed so convincing. She tricked us."

What do you do?
Sep 27, 2023 6:23 pm
Albert takes another good look at Theuphilda "How did I not see that before?!? Phil! It is you." He is overwhelmed with relief and gives her a big hug.

"I can't believe that darn Nicky. Why even go through all that trouble?" He says a bit later "Olaf was right to mistrust her."
Sep 28, 2023 4:56 am
Norbert just stares at Phil for a few seconds. Then he sits down and says "I’m just so happy you are OK." He looks around silly when he feels he is blushing and people are looking at him.

"Where do wee go from here? If Nicky is not stopped this might happen again. And this valley wil not be safe. I trust these women not to do this again, but Nicky might find other victims."
Sep 28, 2023 10:04 am
- Norbert -

"Oh." Phil says, crestfallen at your reaction. "I thought you knew." She is blushing more than you are as she says this and she hides her face.

In light of this revelation some of her previous behavior seems a lot more... 'flirty' than you may have realized.

What do you do?
Sep 30, 2023 8:18 am
Albert looks at Norbert. "I do have an idea about that, actually. We could try to do a cleansing ritual on that altar. With Raynor's fire, we could perhaps neutralize it." He offers. "That way Nicky wouldn't be able to use it anymore. At least I hope."

He looks at the children "But let's get everyone home first."
Sep 30, 2023 8:45 pm
Roald is baffled by Phil's Revelations. Part of him is also angry about the wild goose chase she sent them on.
OOC:
I'm not really sure if Phil was part of the search party for the mayor's daughter. Basically searching for herself.
But his, no, ... her pretty face calms down his angry feelings.

she's still a kid Roald, don't be too hard on her.

After hearing Albert's plan:

'' sounds like a plan Albert, if I can,.. I would like to help. Although I have no clue how to do such a thing. ''
Oct 1, 2023 5:50 am
"So back to the mayor it is then. Maybe I can quickly say hello to mom, once we’re there. You could come along, if you like." That last sentence was only for Phil. If blushing would hurt, Norbert would be dead by now. Even the dog doesn’t know how to behave. It started to hop around Phil but now it keeps her distance whit everyone looking annoyed and confused at her.

"I still don’t understand how the Baron fits into this. And is there more than one? And will he keep out of the village affairs now?"
Oct 1, 2023 6:28 am
- Norbert -

"I would love that." Phil says, her eyes hidden behind long, downcast lashes. She is glad of the dog's antics serving as a distraction so she can hide her intensifying blush by burying her face in the dog's fur.

OOC:

Phil looks relieved at the change of subject, but then angry at the subject matter.

"What?! Just because I'm suddenly a girl again I can't come with you anymore?!" She exclaims, there is still a slight drunk edge to her speech, and that may be adding to the volatility of her reaction.

"You were fine with us adventuring with you before. This is exactly why we did not tell you." This last sentence is spoken to Albert but Phil's eyes definitely dart to Norbert as though begging him to understand the need for the lie.

"If you are going to break the altar, I want to be part of that. I deserve to be part of that!" Phil says.

What do you do?
Oct 4, 2023 2:06 pm
"Whow, just a minute there..." Roald steps in.
"Nobody said you were not welcome to keep on adventuring with us. It's just that we would like to have your father's permission. If he says it's fine, we would be delighted to have you tag along"
Though Roald is not 100% sure if all his friends would agree, he for one would have no problem with the girl becoming a part of the group. But he expects the mayor to have some oppositions. Without his permission they could accused of abducting his daughter instead of rescueing her.

"Would you agree with cleansing the altar first, and THEN make a quick stop at your father's?"
Oct 4, 2023 4:57 pm
"He will just say 'no'." Phil says, looking defeated.

"Then let's do this one thing first." Theo says, clearly agreeing with his sister's assessment of their father's impending reaction and trying to make the most of this last opportunity.

What do you do?
Oct 4, 2023 5:27 pm
"I think your father would want to know you are safe a soon as possible. He would be very upset if he found out we went adventuring before we brought him the good news." Norbert looks in the direction of the altar and adds "but leaving this horrible site without cleansing it would be a worse crime. So Albert, what do you need from us?"
Oct 5, 2023 3:36 pm
Albert looks thorn between the choices. Is it good to take them with him? "Well... hmmm..." It takes him a while to think about it. "I suppose Raynor does want as many followers as possible. Witnessing such a cleansing would surely help." He assumes. "And I'm loyal to him before the mayor." Besides, he realizes, they are here now. Why not get it over with?

By thinking this through, he can see the benefit of finishing this first. "Alright. But you'll have to help us if you're going to stay."

"Let's see." He tells Norbert. "We'll need some incense to burn, a torch, some kind of flammable liquid and if possible a large hammer." He is making this up on the spot, but he's read about rituals before. With some knowledge from books, mixed with own ideas, he feels confident that this'll be possible. "Yeah, that should do it. Anyone have any of those?"
Oct 6, 2023 11:13 pm
'' I think I saw an axe over by the women's camp, we could use the back of the axe as a hammer. I'll go and see what I can scavenge''
Oct 9, 2023 5:57 am
"I will go rummage around the stuff around the women's camp. Does anyone know what incense is? And would a oillamp do as liquid? I'm sure they will have had one last night." He looks around for someone to go along with him, his eye resting just a little longer on Phil.
Oct 9, 2023 9:43 am
"Oh. They smeared oil on me, from a barrel, if that helps." Phil says, and you can see her hair and skin does have a certain sheen to it.

What do you do?
Oct 9, 2023 3:51 pm
"Let's find that barrel, then." Norbert says without spending one second to think about why the would cover the girl in oil. The only explenation he can think of would burn an image in his brain he could never get ride of.

"Do you need to wash it off?" He adds as an afterthought
Oct 9, 2023 3:58 pm
- Norbert -

"Do you have soap?" Phil asks in reply. There might be a stream nearby, but water does not wash off oil very easily, and she is not that covered that it soaked through her robe... except in a few places --though maybe you should not be looking too closely.

What do you do?
Oct 9, 2023 5:21 pm
"Great!" Albert says, hearing everyone getting to work.
While they others search for the needed items, he heads to the altar to inspect it. Anyone who wants to follow him is welcome to.
Oct 10, 2023 9:37 am
Roald walks a few meters alongside Norbert and Phil. Their awkward silence gives him some kind of unwelcome feeling.
''I'm going to check out the other side of the camp first, see you in a bit.''
He leaves them on their own and starts looking for the axe he saw earlier.
Oct 10, 2023 8:37 pm
Albert makes his way to the stone table. Now that he doesn't have to worry about the women, it's easy enough to get there. Getting closer, he sees it's made up of natural stones, all meticulously placed to fit together. Some substance that was perhaps mud or clay acts as a glue to give it some extra strength. The ground at the base of it is densely packed with grass and ivy, some of which is growing up one of the sides. For a second Albert thinks to see the movement of a mouse, but in a flash it's gone.

He spends some time just looking at it and trying to sense any sort of power or entity that may emanate from within. While waiting for his friends to arrive, he closes his eyes and takes a deep breath. In his head, he goes through some words that he might use in his prayer later.

The 'altar' is really a stone table, in your training you may have heard of such things being used for sacrifices or 'power transfers' —whatever that means.

The table/altar feels old. While it is hard to tell for sure, with all the trampling around that the women have been doing for the last few days, it does not look like anyone has come here in a very long time, 'generations', you would guess. So how anyone knew to arrange this whole thing at this spot is a mystery.

The altar feels devoid of power, but you can suspect that performing a sacrifice upon it would charge it up. Destroying it should prevent such use in the future, merely dismantling it might not be enough, but engulfing it in Raynor's fire and blessing should do the trick.

Roald walks around the makeshift camp. Some moldy tents and a few firepits with nothing but ashes. He checks out the tents, but besides some straw and grass that were used to sleep on. There is practically nothing to be seen.

what did they eat?

He looks around to find the axe, not so far from him he hears Norbert and 'Phil' chatting quietly while they search the other side. It puts a smile on his face.

way to go Norbert!

Roald almost trips over the axe, it fell down from the tree it was inbedded in. He grabs the handle and walks over to Albert.

'' got you hammer Albert! Did you find out something about this table?''
Oct 15, 2023 8:24 am
"Seems its very old. Definitely an altar for sacrifices. Albert answers. "I wonder how it ended up here. Who made it?"

"That'll do as a hammer. Thanks Roald." He smiles calmly at him. "When he others get here we can start cleansing this place."
Oct 15, 2023 6:50 pm
For the ritual, Albert hands out some instructions to the others. "Roald, grab the axe and strike the altar when you feel the time is right.
Norbert, can you pour the oil onto the altar?
Phil.. uhm Theuphilda, can you and Theo light the herbs and let the smoke flow onto the altar?"

He thinks for a second more. "The hit from the axe should be enough to light the oil. Oh and feel free to pray with me."
When everyone is ready Albert then turns away from the altar and says a prayer.

"Raynor, we stand before you in the presence of a foul site. This ancient altar was to be used to sacrifice humans and animals alike. Even children were not to be spared. A practice that has already been abolished in your name is something we cannot stand for.
We seek your fire to cleanse this place, so that no blood need be spilled. Bless us with your light as we have seen you do before."

He ends with the well known phrase.
"With righteous strength we will not stray
Raynor's fire will light the way."

He squeezes her hand but doesn't dare to say anything.

For a moment it feels like there is a connection between you and Phil, but she does not look at you instead and pulls her hand away. This is not a rejection —though it definitely feels like it— but rather an expression of the anger you noticed building inside her as she sobers up and the weight of almost being sacrificed descends on her.
Oct 17, 2023 5:38 am
Phil strides forward and takes the hammer from Roald's hand. Righteous anger burns within her, and the white robe they clad her in seems to glow as she raises the heavy tool above her head to strike at the altar.

Her anger does not feel directed towards 'conquest' and could easily slip into 'revenge' if she is not guided by more steady hands, real or metaphorical.

Norbert raises his eyebrows a few seconds after Albert hit the altar and nothing happens. He is so used to witness miracles when the man is around.

When Phil lets go of his hand his heart sinks even deeper than the disappointment from Alberts' failure. Seeing her pick up the axe his heart skips a beat and then stops almost as he realizes she in still clad in oil "WAIT!" he shouts. "The oil." he mumbles, trying not to think of everyone looking at him.

Phil takes a step back, lowers the axe and puts it in Norbert's outstreched hands. 'Raynor, This valley needs to be cleansed from the evil this altar represents. I don't raise this axe with a heart filled with anger, but love. Love for my family and village. Love for generations past and future. But mostly for the people around me here and now.'

When Phil steps back a bit Norbert raises the axe above his head and swings it at the cursed stone.

With these thoughts in his mind, Norbert looks up to the sky while he swings the axe down.

'Raynor, This valley needs to be cleansed from the evil this altar represents. I don't raise this axe with a heart filled with anger, but love. Love for my family and village. Love for generations past and future. But mostly for the people around me here and now.'

'Albert guided me these lasts few days and has shown your ways. He is a kind and helpful man and doesn't hesitate to help even people who have wronged him moments before. I hope you can see the truth in my heart and guide my hands.'

He closes his eyes and doesn't really dare to open them when he feels the impact rattle his bones.

Albert doesn't let Roald's attempt stop him. Instead he prays louder, really calling upon Raynor's power. If He wants something form Albert, it'll have to go both ways.

To his surprise, Norbert steps up and delivers a strike with resolve. Albert can see it in his eyes before he closes them. Through the smoke of sage and herbs, he can see a crack appear on top of the table. And then, soon after the oil ignites, burning the moss that covered its sides previously.

He raised his hands up to the sky and mouths "Thank you".

Roald watches how Norbert hits the table. With a loud bang some sparks fly away but they fade out even before they hit the table. Still, moments later the top of the table is burning with a roaring fire, whiter than normal flames.
He instantly knows this is Raynor's work.

Roald drops to one knee and bows his head.
'' thank you Raynor, once again you displayed your infinite power''

The fire starts to creep over the edges with Parts of the moss dropping on the ground beneath.
Clearly oil has been soaked into the ground because now a fire is spreading all around the table.
Luckely the woman cleared all the bushes and trees. There is now immediate hazard but everyone has to take a few steps back.
The heat of the fire burns Roald face. But he can't stop watching. As does everyone else.

Norbert does a few steps back, looks at the axe in his hands and drops it. "Thank you Raynor." He looks over to Albert "And thank you for making me aware of this glorious guide. I have learned a lot about life these last few days."

He looks over to Phil and says:"There might be many great adventures in the world out there, but I believe my place is here in this valley. Maybe I can spread Raynors word and love here. That might be the way out of this stupid situation we have with the barons. I'm willing to give it my all if you stand beside me." With the fire of the altar end in his heart he doesn't even blush.

Albert nods solemnly to Norbert. "It's good to see that Raynor has found a place with you as well, Norbert." He gives him a warm smile, then turns back to the altar. The fire, now almost extinguished has left a blackened tabletop. The impact of the 'hammer' however shows a white outline of a circle with a triangle in it. It takes a bit of imagination to see, but definitely a sign that Raynor left his mark here. Hopefully, it will deter wrongdoers from using this site of power in the future.

He looks around at everyone who witnessed the event. "Spread the word of what happened here, my friends. You saw it with your own eyes and felt it in your heart. Nobody can take that away from you."

After hearing Norbert's resolution and giving him some time with Theuphilda, he walks over and offers his hand for a heartfelt handshake. "It was a privilege to travel with you, Norbert. But if you feel that your place is here, then you must follow that path. I have no doubt the region will benefit from it!" Then pulls him closer into a hug with a happy chuckle.
"Looks like it's just us again, Roald! Unless you're still interested?" He looks over at Daryl with an inquisitive expression.

Content that it's safe to leave, he picks up his broom handle and heads back to town with the others.

- Norbert -

At first Phil looks disappointed —she was looking for adventure and to get away from her father— but then she hears your last words and tears spring to her eyes as she reaches out and takes you hand again.

"Actually I think I have had quite enough 'adventure', come to think of it." She admits. "And it was not what I thought it would be."

She studies you approvingly for several long moments before continuing: "We had better add my father to the 'silly situation'." She says. "I have watched how he runs the village, and had many plans on how to make things work better... or even just to make them work at all. But, as a girl, I could not take over as mayor... however... if my ... er... man?... took on that role I could guide him (/you) and we could fix this mess."

She drags Theo into the conversation. He seems embarrassed by the topic but agrees that her ideas are sound. "I would support you." He says to you. "But I think I need to leave. Go to school in the city and learn more." Theo has no interest in 'rural government'.

- Albert -

Daryl appears torn by indecision. "I don't know." He says. "This was nothing like what I expected. While it was 'heroic', what we did, I pictured more 'adventure' and 'strange new places'... the places I saw were just 'strange'."

You suspect he might rethink things and decide to come with when the time comes, but for now he really wants to go home.

"Did anyone find my armour?" He asks, and when no one has, he looks worried. "My father is going to kill me. That was his grandfather's."

"Oh, right! My backpack!" Albert suddenly recalls. "I completely forgot. I need to find it." He says a bit embarrassed that he didn't remember before suggesting they were 'done here'.

He takes some time to look around for where their gear might have been stashed.
Oct 24, 2023 5:54 am
'' This is it then?'' Roald is a bit lost for words. He looks around the circle to everyone, pauses each time another pair of eyes meets his.
'' It was a privilege going on this adventure with all of you.
In this short time we've been together you have become true Friends and I hate to leave you all behind. ''

He gives everybody a sincere hug.

'' Let's find the gear and be on our way Albert, I'm not one for long goodbyes''

Norbert is a warming to the idea. "Uhm... I think we would make a great team. We could start with helping your father out and taking the difficult and tedious tasks off his hands." He says with a knowing smile.

"And we would be able to spend some more time together and get to know each other."

After hugging Roald he tells the men to come back to the village and that they will take good care of their compagnons while they rest there.

Everyone is tired, and there is no real rush to get back to the village. It turns out Limpy's farm is on the way and he is excited to have you spend the night there... provided you tell him all the details of what happened and how Raynor cleansed the altar.

Apparently Lady has taken the flock of lost women somewhere she says they can find clothes, Limpy did not pay attention to where exactly.
Suddenly the sleeping arrangements are awkward: Does Phil need her own room? She has nothing to wear other than the thin, single layer of white (oiled) linen, but she does not seem phased by that and insists you all treat her the same as before. Theo's protectiveness now makes a lot more sense, but he seems to trust you all with his sister.

- (Feel free to add any details that happened that night.)
The following morning is a leisurely start. Limpy apologises for not being able to provide much by way of breakfast, but it is adequate, if simple.

You arrive back at the village gate after lunch time. Limpy came with to bask in the shared glory (it seems he has something on his mind, but is waiting to see how the past days' actions are received?). The gate guard tries to object to your entering till Theo gets firm and points out that people are waiting for his sister's return.

Inside the village wall not much has changed. At least there is no longer a queue of women outside the healer's place, and those women that you do see look a little sheepish --none of them look familiar from yesterday. You can see the Captain (Bimi) leaning against the wall of the inn, watching your return, but there are probably other people that you need to see first.

Of the mayor, there is no sign.

What do you do?

Albert is out like a light when he lays down. This day has been so overwhelming his brain just shuts down. Before bed though, he takes the time for one more prayer. Thanking Raynor for his help once again.
He thanks Limpy warmly for the breakfast and gives him a strong handshake. "You've been a great help. Thank you. I know Raynor will watch over you."

Heading into the village, Albert gives Bimi a wink from a distance, trying to tell her everything is alright. "Let's make sure the mayor knows his kids are home safe before we do anything else." He offers as a course of action to the others.

OOC:
The amount of this information that each of your characters might learn heavily depends on how much time and effort they put into talking to people and investigating, and also on how long they spend in this valley (Norbert might learn most of it, even after the others depart).

It is up to each of you what your characters find out. If there is anything omitted that you want to explore (or would have explored) further, we can talk about it.

The mayor looked mildly pleased to have his kids back, though more worried about his son's well-being then his daughter's after her traumatic ordeal —if anything he seems pleased that she was eligible. He is a lot less pleased to hear of Theo's plans to leave and further his studies, he definitely plans to derail that idea if he can.

This behaviour does not endear him to the general populace and his position is tenuous at best... someone just needs to work out how one goes about replacing a rural village mayor.
It turns out the women were tricked into joining a cult, and then into doing progressively more extreme things —in the classic (but inaccurate) scenario of 'boiling the frog'— culminating in the aborted sacrifice of the mayor's daughter. Everyone involved admits they were not happy about doing that part (though, obviously, who would claim otherwise?) but did not object due to 'peer pressure'.

The lure that got them involved was talk of how much the men of the valley were oppressing the women under misogynist authority. Few of the women say they felt this way before learning about this phenomenon. From what you have observed: things are bad for everyone —due to mismanagement— and almost all the men (except for the mayor) were surprisingly subservient to their wives, including the scary Olaf —sneaking out to go see his friends and brother because Olga did not approve of them— and even the 'second' baron (whose name we forget) —who seemed very concerned when your questions suggested he would disobey his wife's orders and even think about going out on the night of the solstice.

Aside: Speaking of 'wives' Limpy declares that he is going to seek out Helena and finally ask her to marry him. "No." He says shyly, "After the ox sat on me, I could not face her, out of embarrassment." Depending on how that goes he may or may not be keen to adventure with the party when it leaves.

Back to the 'cult': None of the women really know who 'Aunty Nicki' was —and she has not been spotted since the night before you broke up the ritual— they all assumed she was related to someone else, usually the person who introduced her, though there is confusion over who introduced whom. The hazy consensus is that she has been around for 'a year or three', whispering in people's ears and sowing discord. Everyone seemed to not want to talk about her, as though she had cultivated a habit, in each of them, to treat their relationship as 'special' and 'secret'.
After a few drinks, Olaf boasts about his 'contact', about how he gathered information about the activities of the baron and was instrumental in setting things right. He thinks that Nixon worked for the baron, but is not sure now, and was convinced that Nixon was talking about the near baron and not the other baron, so he is confused about which one. He can not recall Nixon actually saying this outright, but that was the impression he got.

The mayor's expression hardens as he hears this story and he vanishes for a while shortly afterwards, returning looking angry. Possibly there is some connection there.

Someone claims that Olaf's baron also had a 'secret contact', though they don't know if it was a spy from the village or from the other baron.

The person the party saw the other baron sneaking off at night to meet 'in private' (in a public inn?) bears a striking resemblance to the little you saw and have now heard about Olaf's Nixon.

Everyone involved admits that their contact mostly shared information about the bad things being done by people they already disliked. More sowing of discord.
It takes a few days to organise, but Barky was true to his word and enlisted Olga to organise a feast. Depleted as it is, the valley needed to spend the money having food and entertainment shipped in.

A carnival sets up outside the village and people from all over come to participate. There are squabbles and fights as people from opposite sides meet for the first time. Ahsa spends a lot of time talking sternly to these people afterwards and they end those conversations looking contrite and embarrassed by their behaviour.
Ahsa is still being carried about on a palanquin —apparently she provided both the plans for its hasty construction, and the name, though where she would have learned about such things is a mystery— this makes her seem regal —as opposed to 'injured'— which might explain why people are listening to her? That and the fancy clothes the village has provided for her, for some reason?
The captain is worried about Ahsa. "I know her parents, I knew her as a kid. She was always... I don't want to say 'a bit ...dull' but that is the truth." She tells you. "They sent her off on an adventure to try to develop some sort of 'interesting personality to attract suitors'. I think they got more than they bargained for, on both counts." She seems worried.

There is little time to talk with the captain, but she does tell you that she needs to speak to you before you leave. She has possible information about the 'horned-wolf' symbol you found in the evil temple. When she is strong enough she needs to get back to her caravan and her real job, "But," she says. "If you are going to continue to deal with that temple, I may know where to start looking for more information."
Describe what your character do during the carnival/feast/celebration.

Describe anything that you want to have happen to your character in the future. If they are not adventuring further, feel free to go into far future details, as you like it.

Roald enjoys the feast from a distance, staying away from alcohol he looks at the villagers partying till the early hours. He likes watching people. Some of the villagers come to talk to him, asking him about his adventures, and he is happy to tell them every detail of the monsters he encountered.
Talking about the temple makes him wonder what actually was going on there.

unfinished business... Hmmm. Maybe I should talk to Albert about this in the morning... Or maybe better, in the afternoon. He chuckles as he watches some drunk men stumble by.

When he hears the captain will not be joining them next time it saddens his heart, he grew quite fond of her over time.

Maybe I can change her mind, no harm in trying...

And then there is ahsa, what to think of her... Het transformation is peculiar, to say the least.

maybe I should have a chat with her too before we leave, I could tell...

''HEY! WATCH WHERE YOU'RE GOING!''

A drunken, foul smelling guy with spots of vomit on his shirt bumps into him.

Roald pushes him aside and forgets what he was thinking.

Time to go to sleep

Albert is a annoyed by the mayor's uncaring demeanor. These kids deserve better than that. Is all he can think of while the mayor thanks them for their help in a way that suggests he's only saying these words because he has to. Not able to hold his tongue any longer, he gives the mayor an earful in the name of Raynor. Quoting some verses from the holy texts and slamming his staff on the floor for gravity when needed. Without waiting for a response, he turns around and walks away with the words "I don't care to talk to you again until you find out the meaning of the word 'respect'!"

It seems Raynor's fire can take on other forms as well...
Aunt Nicky is easily forgotten for Albert. She ran of, probably to go and swindle some other people in another village. She won't be back here though, not now that people know her true colors. He doesn't see the point in chasing after her either. If their paths cross again, then so be it.
The feast is something Albert greatly enjoys. At some point, after enough beers, he even asks Bimi to dance. He waves at Roald who has been watching from a distance. Where would Albert be without him right now? With a big smile on his face he dances away into the night, being sure to remember how he got to this point, and who to thank for it!
Throughout the past days, Albert has been pondering what to do with the money he got from Asha. It took him some time, but there are a few things he wants to get done and since he has the funds for it, that seems like a good plan.

Firstly, he gives a generous sum to Daryl. "I know this won't replace your old armor's sentimental value, but you'll be able to continue your pursuit of becoming a great warrior. And I know you'll do a fine job at it."

The next handful of coins go to the healer who has been taking such good care of his wounded friends. "Please use this to help more people. You have a good heart and I'm sure you'll put the money to good use."

Albert used to dream of rebuilding his bar and getting back to being a bartender. But life has chosen to put him on a different path and has once again connected him to Raynor. Being a bartender is great, but conquering hearts with the hope and power of Raynor is unbelievable. He decides to visit Olaf and tell him about his plan.
"Olaf, I owe you and Olga a debt for your hospitality and would like to repay that. However, I have a task for you, if you are willing to execute it." He tells him. Albert pulls out a small pouch containing the rest of the coins. "Please use this money to, first and foremost, feed your family." Which shouldn't be a difficult task with gold coins. "Secondly, " He continues "use the rest to build a place of worship in Raynor's name. I'm sure there are people around who will be happy to help after seeing some of Raynor's strength." He smiles warmly "What that place needs to be is up to you. A shrine, a temple, hell it could be a bar if you'd like." He laughs. "Just make sure people are welcome and safe there."
After getting all his stuff in order, Albert heads to the captain as she had told him she had more information on the horned wolf.
