The hammer comes down with a mighty blow. But no fire is to be seen.

''I don't understand '' Roald mumbles.
'' did we do something wrong? Should we try again?''

- Roald -

There is a shower of sparks as the 'hammer' hits the flinty stone of the table but the oil does not ignite, not even on the grass and vines that entwine the lower parts.

For a moment it feels like there is a connection between you and Phil, but she does not look at you instead and pulls her hand away. This is not a rejection —though it definitely feels like it— but rather an expression of the anger you noticed building inside her as she sobers up and the weight of almost being sacrificed descends on her.
Oct 17, 2023 5:38 am
Phil strides forward and takes the hammer from Roald's hand. Righteous anger burns within her, and the white robe they clad her in seems to glow as she raises the heavy tool above her head to strike at the altar.

Her anger does not feel directed towards 'conquest' and could easily slip into 'revenge' if she is not guided by more steady hands, real or metaphorical.

What do you do?

Roald tries to catch Norbert 's eye. Mouthing 'help her' when he looks in his direction.

Norbert raises his eyebrows a few seconds after Albert hit the altar and nothing happens. He is so used to witness miracles when the man is around.

When Phil lets go of his hand his heart sinks even deeper than the disappointment from Alberts' failure. Seeing her pick up the axe his heart skips a beat and then stops almost as he realizes she in still clad in oil "WAIT!" he shouts. "The oil." he mumbles, trying not to think of everyone looking at him.

Phil takes a step back, lowers the axe and puts it in Norbert's outstreched hands. 'Raynor, This valley needs to be cleansed from the evil this altar represents. I don't raise this axe with a heart filled with anger, but love. Love for my family and village. Love for generations past and future. But mostly for the people around me here and now.'

When Phil steps back a bit Norbert raises the axe above his head and swings it at the cursed stone.

With these thoughts in his mind, Norbert looks up to the sky while he swings the axe down.

'Raynor, This valley needs to be cleansed from the evil this altar represents. I don't raise this axe with a heart filled with anger, but love. Love for my family and village. Love for generations past and future. But mostly for the people around me here and now.'

'Albert guided me these lasts few days and has shown your ways. He is a kind and helpful man and doesn't hesitate to help even people who have wronged him moments before. I hope you can see the truth in my heart and guide my hands.'

He closes his eyes and doesn't really dare to open them when he feels the impact rattle his bones.

Albert doesn't let Roald's attempt stop him. Instead he prays louder, really calling upon Raynor's power. If He wants something form Albert, it'll have to go both ways.

To his surprise, Norbert steps up and delivers a strike with resolve. Albert can see it in his eyes before he closes them. Through the smoke of sage and herbs, he can see a crack appear on top of the table. And then, soon after the oil ignites, burning the moss that covered its sides previously.

He raised his hands up to the sky and mouths "Thank you".
Oct 20, 2023 6:12 am
Roald watches how Norbert hits the table. With a loud bang some sparks fly away but they fade out even before they hit the table. Still, moments later the top of the table is burning with a roaring fire, whiter than normal flames.
He instantly knows this is Raynor's work.

Roald drops to one knee and bows his head.
'' thank you Raynor, once again you displayed your infinite power''

The fire starts to creep over the edges with Parts of the moss dropping on the ground beneath.
Clearly oil has been soaked into the ground because now a fire is spreading all around the table.
Luckely the woman cleared all the bushes and trees. There is now immediate hazard but everyone has to take a few steps back.
The heat of the fire burns Roald face. But he can't stop watching. As does everyone else.

Norbert does a few steps back, looks at the axe in his hands and drops it. "Thank you Raynor." He looks over to Albert "And thank you for making me aware of this glorious guide. I have learned a lot about life these last few days."

He looks over to Phil and says:"There might be many great adventures in the world out there, but I believe my place is here in this valley. Maybe I can spread Raynors word and love here. That might be the way out of this stupid situation we have with the barons. I'm willing to give it my all if you stand beside me." With the fire of the altar end in his heart he doesn't even blush.

Albert nods solemnly to Norbert. "It's good to see that Raynor has found a place with you as well, Norbert." He gives him a warm smile, then turns back to the altar. The fire, now almost extinguished has left a blackened tabletop. The impact of the 'hammer' however shows a white outline of a circle with a triangle in it. It takes a bit of imagination to see, but definitely a sign that Raynor left his mark here. Hopefully, it will deter wrongdoers from using this site of power in the future.

He looks around at everyone who witnessed the event. "Spread the word of what happened here, my friends. You saw it with your own eyes and felt it in your heart. Nobody can take that away from you."

After hearing Norbert's resolution and giving him some time with Theuphilda, he walks over and offers his hand for a heartfelt handshake. "It was a privilege to travel with you, Norbert. But if you feel that your place is here, then you must follow that path. I have no doubt the region will benefit from it!" Then pulls him closer into a hug with a happy chuckle.
"Looks like it's just us again, Roald! Unless you're still interested?" He looks over at Daryl with an inquisitive expression.

Content that it's safe to leave, he picks up his broom handle and heads back to town with the others.

At first Phil looks disappointed —she was looking for adventure and to get away from her father— but then she hears your last words and tears spring to her eyes as she reaches out and takes you hand again.

"Actually I think I have had quite enough 'adventure', come to think of it." She admits. "And it was not what I thought it would be."

She studies you approvingly for several long moments before continuing: "We had better add my father to the 'silly situation'." She says. "I have watched how he runs the village, and had many plans on how to make things work better... or even just to make them work at all. But, as a girl, I could not take over as mayor... however... if my ... er... man?... took on that role I could guide him (/you) and we could fix this mess."

She drags Theo into the conversation. He seems embarrassed by the topic but agrees that her ideas are sound. "I would support you." He says to you. "But I think I need to leave. Go to school in the city and learn more." Theo has no interest in 'rural government'.

Daryl appears torn by indecision. "I don't know." He says. "This was nothing like what I expected. While it was 'heroic', what we did, I pictured more 'adventure' and 'strange new places'... the places I saw were just 'strange'."

You suspect he might rethink things and decide to come with when the time comes, but for now he really wants to go home.

"Did anyone find my armour?" He asks, and when no one has, he looks worried. "My father is going to kill me. That was his grandfather's."
Oct 23, 2023 6:47 pm
"Oh, right! My backpack!" Albert suddenly recalls. "I completely forgot. I need to find it." He says a bit embarrassed that he didn't remember before suggesting they were 'done here'.

He takes some time to look around for where their gear might have been stashed.
Oct 24, 2023 5:54 am
'' This is it then?'' Roald is a bit lost for words. He looks around the circle to everyone, pauses each time another pair of eyes meets his.
'' It was a privilege going on this adventure with all of you.
In this short time we've been together you have become true Friends and I hate to leave you all behind. ''

He gives everybody a sincere hug.

'' Let's find the gear and be on our way Albert, I'm not one for long goodbyes''

Norbert is a warming to the idea. "Uhm... I think we would make a great team. We could start with helping your father out and taking the difficult and tedious tasks off his hands." He says with a knowing smile.

"And we would be able to spend some more time together and get to know each other."

After hugging Roald he tells the men to come back to the village and that they will take good care of their compagnons while they rest there.

Everyone is tired, and there is no real rush to get back to the village. It turns out Limpy's farm is on the way and he is excited to have you spend the night there... provided you tell him all the details of what happened and how Raynor cleansed the altar.

Apparently Lady has taken the flock of lost women somewhere she says they can find clothes, Limpy did not pay attention to where exactly.
Suddenly the sleeping arrangements are awkward: Does Phil need her own room? She has nothing to wear other than the thin, single layer of white (oiled) linen, but she does not seem phased by that and insists you all treat her the same as before. Theo's protectiveness now makes a lot more sense, but he seems to trust you all with his sister.

- (Feel free to add any details that happened that night.)
The following morning is a leisurely start. Limpy apologises for not being able to provide much by way of breakfast, but it is adequate, if simple.

You arrive back at the village gate after lunch time. Limpy came with to bask in the shared glory (it seems he has something on his mind, but is waiting to see how the past days' actions are received?). The gate guard tries to object to your entering till Theo gets firm and points out that people are waiting for his sister's return.

Inside the village wall not much has changed. At least there is no longer a queue of women outside the healer's place, and those women that you do see look a little sheepish --none of them look familiar from yesterday. You can see the Captain (Bimi) leaning against the wall of the inn, watching your return, but there are probably other people that you need to see first.

Of the mayor, there is no sign.

What do you do?
Oct 29, 2023 8:15 pm
Albert is out like a light when he lays down. This day has been so overwhelming his brain just shuts down. Before bed though, he takes the time for one more prayer. Thanking Raynor for his help once again.
He thanks Limpy warmly for the breakfast and gives him a strong handshake. "You've been a great help. Thank you. I know Raynor will watch over you."

Heading into the village, Albert gives Bimi a wink from a distance, trying to tell her everything is alright. "Let's make sure the mayor knows his kids are home safe before we do anything else." He offers as a course of action to the others.

OOC:
The amount of this information that each of your characters might learn heavily depends on how much time and effort they put into talking to people and investigating, and also on how long they spend in this valley (Norbert might learn most of it, even after the others depart).

It is up to each of you what your characters find out. If there is anything omitted that you want to explore (or would have explored) further, we can talk about it.

The mayor looked mildly pleased to have his kids back, though more worried about his son's well-being then his daughter's after her traumatic ordeal —if anything he seems pleased that she was eligible. He is a lot less pleased to hear of Theo's plans to leave and further his studies, he definitely plans to derail that idea if he can.

This behaviour does not endear him to the general populace and his position is tenuous at best... someone just needs to work out how one goes about replacing a rural village mayor.
It turns out the women were tricked into joining a cult, and then into doing progressively more extreme things —in the classic (but inaccurate) scenario of 'boiling the frog'— culminating in the aborted sacrifice of the mayor's daughter. Everyone involved admits they were not happy about doing that part (though, obviously, who would claim otherwise?) but did not object due to 'peer pressure'.

The lure that got them involved was talk of how much the men of the valley were oppressing the women under misogynist authority. Few of the women say they felt this way before learning about this phenomenon. From what you have observed: things are bad for everyone —due to mismanagement— and almost all the men (except for the mayor) were surprisingly subservient to their wives, including the scary Olaf —sneaking out to go see his friends and brother because Olga did not approve of them— and even the 'second' baron (whose name we forget) —who seemed very concerned when your questions suggested he would disobey his wife's orders and even think about going out on the night of the solstice.

Aside: Speaking of 'wives' Limpy declares that he is going to seek out Helena and finally ask her to marry him. "No." He says shyly, "After the ox sat on me, I could not face her, out of embarrassment." Depending on how that goes he may or may not be keen to adventure with the party when it leaves.

Back to the 'cult': None of the women really know who 'Aunty Nicki' was —and she has not been spotted since the night before you broke up the ritual— they all assumed she was related to someone else, usually the person who introduced her, though there is confusion over who introduced whom. The hazy consensus is that she has been around for 'a year or three', whispering in people's ears and sowing discord. Everyone seemed to not want to talk about her, as though she had cultivated a habit, in each of them, to treat their relationship as 'special' and 'secret'.
After a few drinks, Olaf boasts about his 'contact', about how he gathered information about the activities of the baron and was instrumental in setting things right. He thinks that Nixon worked for the baron, but is not sure now, and was convinced that Nixon was talking about the near baron and not the other baron, so he is confused about which one. He can not recall Nixon actually saying this outright, but that was the impression he got.

The mayor's expression hardens as he hears this story and he vanishes for a while shortly afterwards, returning looking angry. Possibly there is some connection there.

Someone claims that Olaf's baron also had a 'secret contact', though they don't know if it was a spy from the village or from the other baron.

The person the party saw the other baron sneaking off at night to meet 'in private' (in a public inn?) bears a striking resemblance to the little you saw and have now heard about Olaf's Nixon.

Everyone involved admits that their contact mostly shared information about the bad things being done by people they already disliked. More sowing of discord.
It takes a few days to organise, but Barky was true to his word and enlisted Olga to organise a feast. Depleted as it is, the valley needed to spend the money having food and entertainment shipped in.

A carnival sets up outside the village and people from all over come to participate. There are squabbles and fights as people from opposite sides meet for the first time. Ahsa spends a lot of time talking sternly to these people afterwards and they end those conversations looking contrite and embarrassed by their behaviour.
Ahsa is still being carried about on a palanquin —apparently she provided both the plans for its hasty construction, and the name, though where she would have learned about such things is a mystery— this makes her seem regal —as opposed to 'injured'— which might explain why people are listening to her? That and the fancy clothes the village has provided for her, for some reason?
The captain is worried about Ahsa. "I know her parents, I knew her as a kid. She was always... I don't want to say 'a bit ...dull' but that is the truth." She tells you. "They sent her off on an adventure to try to develop some sort of 'interesting personality to attract suitors'. I think they got more than they bargained for, on both counts." She seems worried.

There is little time to talk with the captain, but she does tell you that she needs to speak to you before you leave. She has possible information about the 'horned-wolf' symbol you found in the evil temple. When she is strong enough she needs to get back to her caravan and her real job, "But," she says. "If you are going to continue to deal with that temple, I may know where to start looking for more information."
Describe what your character do during the carnival/feast/celebration.

Describe anything that you want to have happen to your character in the future. If they are not adventuring further, feel free to go into far future details, as you like it.

Roald enjoys the feast from a distance, staying away from alcohol he looks at the villagers partying till the early hours. He likes watching people. Some of the villagers come to talk to him, asking him about his adventures, and he is happy to tell them every detail of the monsters he encountered.
Talking about the temple makes him wonder what actually was going on there.

unfinished business... Hmmm. Maybe I should talk to Albert about this in the morning... Or maybe better, in the afternoon. He chuckles as he watches some drunk men stumble by.

When he hears the captain will not be joining them next time it saddens his heart, he grew quite fond of her over time.

Maybe I can change her mind, no harm in trying...

And then there is ahsa, what to think of her... Het transformation is peculiar, to say the least.

maybe I should have a chat with her too before we leave, I could tell...

''HEY! WATCH WHERE YOU'RE GOING!''

A drunken, foul smelling guy with spots of vomit on his shirt bumps into him.

Roald pushes him aside and forgets what he was thinking.
