OOC:
Hey, way to come through in the clutch!
The magister winkles his nose like he just smelled or tasted something nasty at Ragnarr's explanation, and then further works his mouth soundlessly for a moment like he's swallowing the distasteful thing, while he writes upon a scroll before him.

Ultimately he says through his interpreter, "The magister sees it fit only that you pay the administrative fee for signatory to your stay. Should representation be required by you in your stay, you will pay it at that time, no duty tariff was assessed.

1 silver pence a piece, and you may go.
"

The interpreter points to a small but heavy, ironbound chest near the door, and the magister has already moved on to review notes for the next case.

...

Entering into Umbar, you are still far from the sea yet the fetid smells of salt water already intermingle with the dust and spice and frying flatbreads that seems to dominate the air here.

It's structures are tall and tiered and plastered in a muddy stucco, white-washed with a limestone-powdered sealant. Almost blinding to look upon at the wrong angle.

The streets are seemingly disorganized, appearing to have grown simply out of the need to accommodate more people, rather than any plan, however you are able to find your way to the smithy where your contact is purportedly residing after some time.
OOC:
Apologies gang, for the railroad straight to Onar, but I want to get GreyWord in. If there are other things you want to do of a high priority in Umbar, we can possibly say they are done on the way there?

And what you do from here is ofc yours to determine as a group.

OOC:
Awesome!
Thank you, sir. Ragnarr drops 6 silver pennies in the box and reaches one to the interpreter. For your service

"The light... It is so different, this far South," he murmurs while shielding his eyes from the glare.
He looks at the ground, "the shadows have sharper edges, too..."

Éothain could not hold his tongue as the party wound through the streets, "I have no fondness for bureaucrats and their sense of superiority. The larger the town, the more pompous and useless they are, and that magistrate was no different. He would not last on day on the plains of home . . . and no one would put his name to song."
Aug 21, 2023 3:48 pm
"I have seen my share of these types in the White City Éothain and, yes, they dot their papers in airless rooms. But they also do much to help the city run, and without them the people would be in dire straits," Seònaid replies to Éothain. "Do not judge them too harshly for they are fathers and mothers of those who fight to protect us all against the Shadow."

Turning to Cirion she says, "Yes Cirion, much will be different to you here. I have not traveled these lands, and have heard dark tales of the folk who live here. So together we can discover if it be true that they eat foods of such heat that your innards boil if you do not be careful. Hahaha!"

Duinhir also pays the requested amount. It is just coins after all and he just regards coins for what they are a means to an end. They are of no real value in the wild after all.

When they are out of earshot he joins Éothain and Seónaid's conversation. "Some of these coins might go to do good in the city but I'm sure most of it will end up in the pocket of some dishonest clerk. That magister seems pretty well dressed."

And so it is that the company comes upon the location of the forge where Andireg said they could find their contact.

It's a ground-level unit with a moderately-sized courtyard-like space set off to the side of it, shaded by large triangles of canvas, except the courtyard is filled with the accoutrement of smithing - anvils, troughs of water, barrels of coke, and of course a handful of bellow-worked forges around the periphery.

It looks like there is a business-front associated with it, and some of the equipment appears to be dedicated to that, however the rest of the equipment is made available for people to use on a commission basis.

Andireg's directions do not mention the business, so the dwarf you all seek must be a commission worker.
OOC:
@GreyWord please give us an intro to Onar.

Physical description, perhaps insight into his thoughts at seeing a group of rather obvious-Northerners standing outside looking into the place where he works, any actions he'd take, whatever you feel is appropriate.

Aged dwarf in worn out leather apron drop sized hammer and approach party silently.
Age has stooped his shoulders and hunched his back, but he remains surprisingly strong, yet a bit slow.
His only aye quickly evaluate the equipment of the party, but stay longer than necessary on the faces.
Motley company! he suddenly announce You may pretend you want some dwarf-forged sword or helmet. Or you can save that for someone younger just tell me your actual business. Bitter is my choice. Ónar is my name
Aug 22, 2023 6:35 pm
"We are motley in appearance — the road does that — but mighty in our purpose. We are from Gondor and have business with you of a private matter. Is there a place nearby where we can speak freely?"
Aug 22, 2023 6:58 pm
Seònaid glances about to see if anyone is paying them any special attention, finding she is more cautious than normal in this foreign city.
OOC:
@emsquared: She doesn't have proficiency in any useful skills for this, so not sure what you'd want her to roll?
Aug 22, 2023 8:46 pm
"You have surely ended up a long way from home, master Onar. So have we as you might have guessed. Riverman Wayfarer, at your service." he replies the dwarf with a slight bow not daring to give his real name in the open street.
Noting how Seónaid is looking around, he agrees with Éothain. "Like my friend here suggests, we better speak somewhere more private."
Aug 22, 2023 9:16 pm
Are we so easy to read, then? If any smith can see we are here with a different purpose? Or maybe our dwarven contact is particularly sharp-witted... He ponders, observing the scene.

Drakis2 says:
OOC:
@emsquared: She doesn't have proficiency in any useful skills for this, so not sure what you'd want her to roll?
OOC:
You can certainly roll a Wisdom (Perception - for people following, or trying to conceal the fact that they're looking at you) or (Insight - for more info about why, or how much exactly anyone is paying attention) to try to gain more specificity, or more certainty than what follows...
You all can tell, you're not the only Northerners in Umbar, indeed maybe as much as 1 in 3 people dress in the styles of the Coastal People that inhabit, well, the coasts between Umbar and Gondor. Most of the Coastal folk are true Harondorian, and are generally considered Northron by the people of the Harad (and it should be noted, many people of Gondor might consider the Coastal People Southron).

But your company's specific stylings, particularly armor if you're wearing it, weaponry, and even clothing (cloaks, boots, gloves, etc), can mark you as even more Northern than that, just by virtue of being built of materials and cuts that serve a different function and purpose than are of a demand here.

And of your stylings, you have seen very few.

So when Seonaid looks to see if anyone is paying you all special attention, it could be said that, yes, they are. You are, in a real way, special here. So people walking by, or whom you walk by, tend to find their eyes lingering upon your contingent if for no other reason than you're just something a bit different than the usual, and so, eye-catching.
Aug 22, 2023 10:41 pm
Feeling uncomfortable by the unwarranted attention their group is getting Seònaid tries to determine if anyone is more than just passing curious and, possibly, even spying on them

Ragnarr speaks a little louder than normal, Why yes fine sir I would love to see what dealings my family from Lake Town can make with you. Maybe we should talk in private. Name is Ragnarr. Ragnarr is hoping to have the crowd believe why they are going in private and also to utilize this background feature…
[ +- ]
He is hoping his name will strike almost a fear of the shadow that people will look away and not get too curious
Aug 23, 2023 2:50 am
Seonaid is able to clock a couple people going about surreptitious activities... over there, a small child - dirty feet almost black they've not been washed in so long - timing a vendors roaming gaze to snatch a small roll from under his nose... over there, a man trying to hide the fact from the woman he walks arm in arm with that he's leering at another woman... but anyone she sees looking at her or her company are doing so openly, and really for no longer than the few moments it takes to register their own mundane wonder before moving on. And she feels fairly certain no one's following them, or if they are, they'd must be very good.

Ónar, invites the party into the forge talking in Riddles but making it clear that it will be private once you are inside, still not explaining details of privacy or his interest in the conversation.

He summons a nicely crafted wooden sign "CLOSED" and smaller script below state "Ónar is currently busy. Come back later today!" while waiting for everyone to proceed inside through the doors. He would put that sign on the doors before closing them once everyone inside

I had forgotten about that particular application of the Riddle skill! Nice catch, GreyWord. Kind of a Thieves Cant but for everyone.

Give my terrible roll I believe my PC is too excited and give away the fact that he suspect visitors from Gondor insisting on privacy have something to do with politics or the Shadow, he probably even mention the Shadow as he hurry party inside.
