Éothain shares his information about the legendarium with the others and asks, "Do you think it’s worth the risk?"
"This is something I was not aware of, although I have heard tales of Osgiliath," Seònaid answers Éothain. "I agree, the Legendarium may reveal secrets that will help us in this quest. But that side of the river is as dangerous as you heard. Maybe we can seek out someone who has traveled there and would share their experience. Possibly we can find a member of the guards, or Duinhir may be able to find a Ranger who would share?"

I have added a map of Osgiliath, in it's current state (of ruin), in the IC resource thread, as well as a map of Gondor to Umbar (which you had received from Commander Andireg before your first quest).

As well as updated the other resource posts.

Also, I'm not sure exactly what you want out of researching the lineage of Eldacar. But here's some stuff :)
Eldacar was of the House of Anarion, one of the main two descendant lines from the Kings of Numenor, they are the house that was given rule over Gondor when the Numenorians first came to Middle-earth.

The other main line of descendants of Numenor was the House of Isildur, whom ruled over Arnor in the North, but all were killed in the war with the Witch King.

Here is the Anarion familial line after Eldacar and the Kin-strife wars.

So are we all interested in finding out about the far shore of Osgiliath, and visiting to look for the Legendarium?

Really need to make a group decision on this before I can proceed.

If you all did decide to go for it, it would take place in the time span of the Fellowship Phase, and so wouldn't put you on any sort of delay for getting after the Collector.

Seems like the Lady wanted to wait for news of her agents, sent to collect information on the Collector. I think the first thing to do is wait for their return - or for sufficient time to pass to prove that they won't return? In case they bring fresh news.

Sounds like fun to go find the legendarium. Duinhir is up for it but I will respect it if anyone is against doing side quests

OOC:
sure , happy to go with the side quest if the group leans that way!

I am not bothered either way. Curious to see what is like, but equally happy to stay with the main quest.

@rpgventurer: You found out about the Legendarium, so what do you say?

So it sounds like Steffron and Drakis (perhaps with the caveat of finding aid?) are down. Dr_B is happy to go with the group interest, and @rpgventurer , since it was his question, I'm going to assume he would like to pursue it.

I'll push the narrative that way and if people have second thoughts, we can always change course.
With your new connections, it is easy enough to get in touch with a Gondorian patrol, just perhaps not while on duty. And although Duinhir is a Dunedain, he isn't necessarily directly connected with the Rangers down here. Most Gondorians do not even know they're here. So finding them would take some doing, but they also might know a bit more about the activities of creatures of the Shadow in Osgiliath...

You're able to speak with a Gondor patrol lead, if you would like to start that conversation.

Sorry for the radio silence (to use an anachronism). Things keep getting in the way ...

FYI, if spending a few coins will help, Éothain will gladly spend it. I am going to assume the patrol leader's rank (retcon if necessary).
"Thank you for meeting with me, Sergeant. I am planning a journey that will take me across the river near Osgiliath. I have heard that orcs and goblins inhabit parts of the old city. Is that true?"
Jan 18, 2024 8:41 pm
The patrol leader looks a bit surprised at a private citizen (or even a group of them) wanting to poke around near Osgiliath and across the river, but he recovers quickly enough, "Eh, that's very true.

And for that reason, I'd advise you against such a journey.

Though those creatures are not particularly active, nor brave, nor usually even present in any great number - they are there, and Gondor has, in all but official fact, ceded Ithilien - and with it the eastern half of Osgiliath - to the black hordes in Mordor.

If you had any troubles, there would be no one to know or send aid... You're essentially beyond our jurisdiction or ability to protect you.

We watch it only to ensure an army does not march across it.

Duinhir puts on a grim expression when he hears about the situation in Ithilien. He heard talk about it up in the north but didn't know it was this bad and the eastern half of Osgiliath de facto ceded.

"'Tis dark tidings to learn. Are there still men of Gondor guarding the western half of the city?
Speaking of crossing the Anduin, as I have understood the maps there is only one bridge remaining. Is that so? And are there any other ways to cross the river?"

Duinhir fears the very exposed position they would be in if they had to cross the sole bridge, especially if orcs and goblins are lurking on the eastern bank.
Jan 20, 2024 12:36 am
He nods, "We watch the bridge at all hours and patrol the perimeter of the ruin of Osgiliath.

As for other crossings... not for many miles up or down river. And even then you will find it is only by ferry, either self-serviced , or tended if you're lucky and come upon it at the right time.

It is true, the Iant Sollen is the only intact bridge until Pelargir one hundred miles to the south, and Cair Andros fifty miles to the north.
"

Seònaid sits and listens to the others talk. She had heard rumours that Gondor had all but given up on Ithilien, but had always held the hope that one day this would change. That one day Gondor would again drive the evils of Mordor back, but it seemed this was not to be.

She waits to hear what sergeant says of the bridge for, like Duinhir she is loathe to cross there. She wonders if he guards use boats to sally across to harrass the new tenants there.
Jan 20, 2024 8:12 am
He looks at his companions, then at the patrolman. "What about... If we had our own boat, or a raft. How's the current? Any good spots to sail off from, on the Western side of the river, Sergeant?"
Jan 20, 2024 1:19 pm
"We don't use boats. We don't go across the river.

Sailing into Osgiliath itself would be far more exposed and I would think certain to draw attention, compared to crossing the bridge where you could at least try to use stealth.

If you've never see the Iant Sollen, it's a bridge, yes, but it's huge... wide enough for two carriages to pass abreast, while people walk all around AND lined with a row of buildings on each side - albeit, now ruined - for nearly it's entire length.

There's a reason it was the only bridge not ruined in the wars. It is no small or delicate thing.

You could make your own crossing outside the city I'm sure but again you'd be very exposed while approaching their perimeter. Those black hearted beasts tend to burn all things green and growing.

I always thought it was because they hated other things living, but now as I say it, it also makes for a handy defense...
"
Jan 21, 2024 9:21 pm
"Thank you for your answers, sergeant. It has been most helpful though not cheerful information." Duinhir replies ready to leave the sergeant to his duties.

"But one last thing if I may? You mentioned Gondolin patrols in Osgiliath. How do we show them we are friendly and on their side? If we travel to the ruined city, we may appear suspicious in their eyes. Can we send greetings from you to prove our honesty?" The ranger asks
Jan 22, 2024 2:14 pm
He nods, "We patrol only the perimeter, and only on the western half of the city.

But, yes, if you have a date when you anticipate making the venture, I could certainly make sure the patrols don't mistake you for orcs.
"
Jan 22, 2024 9:42 pm
Duinhir looks around at his companions, questioning as if to say do we have a date?
