"A fine morning to you, noble companions. Yes, I shall join you in the preparations," Cirion replies feeling much relieved, his guilt starting to dispel now that this new chapter of his life is getting into motion.

I shall accompany you also if that is okay. We will require a stead if everyone else is. Cannot be holding the group back.

Drakis2 says:
OOC:

How many miles is it to Umbar from Pelargir, and is there a road?
OOC:
It's about 600 miles by road. The distance would be shorter off road. But traveling on a good road, which this is, pretty much all the way, cuts travel time in half. And going off road would not cut the distance in half, only to like 2/3s - 3/4s.

OOC:
@emsquared When you say it will take about 2 weeks up above was that on foot or on horse back? Based on the 600 miles that’s horseback, but wanted to clarify if we need horses in order to not be too late.

"I say we provision quickly, so we can take advantage of the day and reach Umbar as quickly as we can", Seònaid says to the group. "Let us see if we meet any trading caravans going south, and we can barter for a ride."
OOC:
I’m ready to get going!

Agreed let us move while the daylight is in front of us!
Aug 4, 2023 8:45 pm
"A good morning to you all" Duinhir greets them. "I agree, we should start our travels while the day is young and make most of this fine day."
Aug 5, 2023 4:21 pm
"What are we waiting for, then? Onwards, fellow travellers!"

So this it... the first steps of my new life, He thinks as they walk out of Pelargir. He finds comfort in the company of his newfound fellow adventurers, and is eager to hear their stories.

Bob, I am no longer in need of your services. You have a new master to document the actions of. I order you to record The Epic of Cirion the story of a young man finding himself
Aug 5, 2023 9:15 pm
He smiles at the thought of a scribe chronicling his adventures. "Ha, rest assured, Bob - there is very little to record yet! You'll have an easy task."
Aug 5, 2023 11:28 pm
Seònaid laughs and pats Cirion on the back.

"Do not say that young man. Surrounded by such generous of spirit warriors as Ragnarr, and his able scribe Bob, you are in the company of those that will soon commit to great deeds, and I am sure you shall be one of those at the forefront. You have courage. Yes, as you command, let us be on our way."

"Greetings all! My business is done in Pelargir." Éothain will mount and ride Skunktail once the party exits the city gates. "The road ahead is clear for our expected journey."

OOC:
That's on foot. A good road cuts travel time in half, and can be reckoned independent of Terrain Difficulty/Peril Rating.

600 miles / 20 miles per day on foot = 30 days

30 days * 1/2 days for good road = 15 days

Ok, so if we're ready to go, and here are our Journey tasks:

Cirion - Scout
Duinhir - Scout
Éothain - Lookout
Ragnarr - Guide
Seònaid - Hunter

Let's get on with the mechanical Journey Phase!

So with Ragnarr as our guide, @Mnrtoler, please give us our 1d12 Embarkation roll, modified by your Survival skill+1/2 Wis modifier (round down)! (I'll about for the Peril Rating on the back end.)

Journey Event

OOC:
Hey gang, so, normally, I might take the opportunity to expand a Journey Event or two into a Skill Challenge or very mini-sidequest.

But as we have a player waiting on us, I'm going to keep this a pretty straightforward thing.
As the party embarks upon the ancient Harad Road, the sun-drenched expanse of Harondor unfolds before you like a tapestry of contrasts.

A surprising touch of spring-like coolness continues to fill the usually arid air, carrying the subtle scent of blooming desert flora. The transition to a desert's harshness still seems a long way off, and it grants the beginning of your journey a feeling of leisurely respite.

The sandy soils, which you might have expected to be parched and unforgiving, are currently bearing traces of new life along the roadside, as delicate wildflowers dot the landscape with bursts of color, harmonizing with the earthy tones of rugged escarpment.

On either side of the road, the northern reaches of the Harad lay before you on the horizon. Rolling dunes barely discernable in the distance, kissed by golden sunlight. Towering sandstone mesas stand as silent sentinels watching your approach, their rugged beauty defying the relentless passage of time.

The first few days at least pass easily as you progress along the Harad Road, the merging of this spring-like vitality with the stark beauty of the approaching desert leaves an indelible impression. This unexpected harmony in nature's rhythms seems to mirror the journey of you all as you travel this ancient path, a reminder that even in the harshest of landscapes, the promise of renewal and growth can persevere.

You do see many travelers at this stage on the road with you, some going south - most of them peeling off in the first day or two to return to local settlements, but many are heading north. And of those, most appear to be fairly small groups of simple folk - traveling workers, craftsmen, merchants - but it is on the third day of your journey when you spot a larger contingent heading your way from the south. Perhaps a dozen people, a few of them on horseback, and from this distance you think they may be armed.

They could be nothing - perhaps just a wealthy caravan under armed guard - or, the Corsair Ship-Lords are in control here, they could be hostile Haradrim looking for Northerners worth shaking down...
OOC:
So, two things:

1. because of your well-rolled Embarkation, you each may ignore the first level of Exhaustion that you may or may not get during the course of the Journey.

2. would you like to try to avoid this large contingent on the road, or just continue on your course and pass them by (and hope that they just pass you by)?
Aug 7, 2023 6:57 pm
OOC:
Awesome I actually rolled well enough to help the group not get exhaustion.
In barely more than a whisper, What do each of you think of this group coming? Shall me meet them head on and hope they have reason to continue their journey uninterrupted or should we try to avoid them?
Aug 7, 2023 7:16 pm
His heart is longing for adventure, and his instinct would be to meet this group of travellers and hear their stories. But the solemn words of the Commander in the tavern still ring in his ears.

He responds in a whisper too. "If I may say... the Commander made it clear that time is of the essence, if the children are to be found... maybe we should avoid these men without risking a delay? Unless we think they might have spotted the vessel we seek further South? You are more experienced than I, what say you? Seònaid ? Duinhir ? Éothain?
Aug 7, 2023 7:48 pm
OOC:
What does our Lookout (Éothain) make of them?
"I say we avoid them," Seònaid whispers to Cirion & Ragnarr. "Wait to see what Éothain spies of them. Friend or foe."
Aug 7, 2023 8:16 pm
"Avoid them. I prefer we not risk any delays."
OOC:
Does Éothain get a Lookout roll?
