Trials, Tribulation, and Treasure

Aug 28, 2023 4:41 am
The sun had just begun to cast its first golden rays upon the provincial dwarven outpost of Floatstone, at the edge of the mountains. Within the quiet marketplace, Rhidon Axehorn, a seasoned dwarven merchant and adventurer, proudly reviewed his heavily laden wagon. He had served both as lead negotiator and guards on this trip saving the merchant house quite a bit of money. Having finished selling off the imported goods and purchased the local specialty. A local stone the town was named after that had an unusual water affinity. The merchant house had sent a junior apprentice merchant, Korgan, to help out on this trip. Hopefully the last would me a better traveling companion on the return trip.

Just then, a distraught woman with tear-filled eyes approached Rhidon's wagon. Clutched tightly in her trembling hands was a faded, crumpled parchment. Rhidon recognized her as one of the local merchants for a small company that had sold him the floatstone. "Please," she implored, her voice quivering with emotion, "you must help me. My daughter, Elira, has been taken by the Crimson Crone. I've heard tales of your bravery and your knowledge of the world beyond. I beg you, Master Axehorn, find my child and bring her back!"

Rhidon's glanced at the parchment she held, recognizing it as a map of the nearby Enchanted swamp, a place he knew to be fraught with both beauty and danger. He exchanged a knowing look with his loyal, burly assistant, Korgan, who stood nearby.
OOC:
Welcome to the game @CurtFactor. Go ahead and begin the story of Rhidon Axehorn. Feel free to add to the story and scene as well as directing your character.
Aug 28, 2023 12:05 pm
In an attempt to comfort her, Rhidon puts his hands on the woman's shoulders and looks into her eyes. You have my word, we will find Elira. He takes the map and taps it against his heart before tucking it away safely.

His demeanor becomes more direct as he snaps into action, looking to Korgan and delivering orders. Make arrangements with a partner in town. Ensure the wagon's safety while we are gone.

Rhidon directs his attention back to the mother. Bring me a small trinket of hers, perhaps a toy. When we find her I want to ensure she has something from home she can hold on to.
OOC:
Just to get a feel for their relationship, when we say 'loyal' is Krogan more loyal to Rhidon specifically, or the merchant house itself?
Aug 28, 2023 1:08 pm
Krogan seems a bit excited at the prospect of setting off on an advnture but also a bit worried. Rhidon known that the lad has worked hard, as he had done, for the chance to serve the company outside the confines and shelter of the established buisness centers. Krogan is a good dwarf but though the thought of adventure is infections the boy has always been more of the diligent and dutiful sort than having the wild and seeking spirit of Rhidon.

The woman offers to keep the wagon in her companies compound while are away. Elira was out working, scouting for deposits of the floatstone with her companion when they wer set upon by the crone. Though her companion was able to escape Elira was paralyzed by one of the crones spells and her companion coulld only watch helplessly as the witch dragged her back to the swamps.

The Crimson Crone is a bit of a local legend and has troubled the area for several decades. Normally she confines herself to the swamps but has been known to venture beyond their borders from time to time. The lady goes on to explain that the locals know of a trickster fey who love to taunt the crone and has been known to help those who she troubles, for a price. Handing you a small pouch she says that this should b sufficient to entice the trickster to aid you is finding the crones lair and rescuing Elira.
Aug 29, 2023 12:24 am
Along with the pouch she hangs you a necklace she removes from her neck. A simple steel chain with a runestone attached. Show this to get and she will know I sent you. Though she is no infant she is still young
Aug 29, 2023 12:37 am
Rhidon accepts the pouch and puts it away separately from the rest of his gear. He knows better than to try any funny business, he’ll leave that to the tricksters should they accept the offer.

After confirming where the fey can be found, and sending a short message to the Merchant House forecasting a four-day delay, they depart for the swamp to seek out the tricksters and strike up a deal.
OOC:
I’m assuming she told me the name the locals use to refer to the trickster fey, if not I would be sure to get this information too before leaving.
Aug 29, 2023 1:22 am
The trickster is known as Flit or Fade, with fade having a darker nefarious conotation. She is known to enjoy prnaking and teasing those who wander the wilds of the area but usually does not harm those she torments. There are a few who claim, quelty and only in town, that fade has lured powerful beast of monsters to those who displease her. It seems that Flit thinks it all a game and hates poor sports who "cant take a joke" or "go too far" . Apparently the Crimson Crone and Flit despise each other and go out of their way to interfere in each other's buisness and pleasure.

Rassaerra Gravelmane, the merchant and mother of Elira, aranges for a cart to take you down the road, saving you a half days travel. The driver ends up being Kokkik Beastfoot, Elira's companion, and is a vetran scout but obviously terrified of the hag. Getting on in years he is a welthe of knowledge but obviously more skilled at avoiding and escaping trouble than handling it direclty.
Kokkik Beastfoot
Kokkik tells yo uwhat happend as you ride along the small and bumpy road
We were following a 'hunch' Elira had, she being a a bit gifted with divinations, and were checking out a new area. I've bee roaming the area around hear for year and should not have been anywhere near the Crimson Crones teritory. But there we are climbing down into this gully to look at a particular rock formation when sudenly the earth opens up and out steps the crone. Scared me to death. I bow and start appologizing, knowing her to have a nasty tempter, but she just strikes me with that staff of hers then does the same to Elira. I move to grab Elira but the crone turns to me and says She s mine now, be off before I feed you to my pets and drags Elira back into he hole that shuts tight.

After several hours Kokkik pulls the wagon over and waves up the hill side. The ravine is up theres a way. Just look for a small stream with two waterfalls. Follow that up the hill till you rach the spring then head east a bit and you should find the ravine. I marked it with the rune "AiR"

Though Kokkik does not seem to enjoy the fey he does prove quite knowledgable.and explains
Now to get Flit, the best way I know it to set up camp and cook some good food and have some drink on hand. Set an extra place with a cup of drink. Do that and she should show up. If you play games while you wait, either riddles or games of luck, she will b in a better mood and try to join the games. That should make her willing to hear you out. Pulling a small sack he hands it to you bfore turning the cart around Flit don't like me much so I will be leaving less you have something else yo uneed from me
In the sack is a leather cup with some dwarven dice, a pack of cards, a small bottle of some ale and the fixings of a decent meal.
Aug 29, 2023 1:41 pm
Rhidon thanks Kokkik for the information and supplies, before sending him on his way as he is clearly uncomfortable this close to the fey.

As he and Krogan walk towards the marked runes, he gives his makeshift apprentice some advice: Kokkik knows this area well, when we come to Floatstone on another expedition we should consult him to know what we're getting into.

While trekking forward, Rhidon wonders what sort of game would entice a trickster. Of course… Grudge! The game almost always brought me and my brother to blows growing up.
OOC:
Unsure how long it will take to get to the indicated spot, but it's my intention to head there and instruct Krogan to begin cooking unless something prevents us from doing so.

Also just to clarify is it Flit or Flick?
Aug 29, 2023 2:59 pm
Hiking up the hillside for well over an hour before coming to the stream you stop for lunch and fill your water skins with the cool refreshing water. Helping Krogan, who is more familiar in a tavern than with a campfire, you chat and start playing Grudge as you eat and wait for the fey.
Finishing a game, having trounced Krogan soundly, you reach to gather up the pieces to start again when you see a slender hand beat your to it.

Flit
This looks fun! Mind if I join? the small fey asks. The wild looking fey is about 2 feet tall and currently eating and drinking the food set aside for Flit.
OOC:
It is Flit. No idea why you might be confused about that. It's not like I would forget a fictional characters name in the middle of a story then have to do back and edit it to make sense. No way that would ever happen 😛
Is grudge an actual game?
Aug 29, 2023 4:40 pm
OOC:
Not an actual game, I pictured it being kind of a casual card game (very straightforward, easy to explain). The sort you can play many rounds of going into the night.
It’s a better game with three… Rhidon pauses to take a drink, but doesn’t take his eye off the fey. …but also much bigger swings. He gestures towards his partner. Krogan here has had bad luck with the dice. Please join us, maybe you’ll help his chances.

Krogan proceeds to deal in the fey, and explain the basics of Grudge. After the first couple hands, Rhidon breaks the ice a little more. Your company is quite welcome here. A joyous evening is order, as we have dangerous work tomorrow.

Flit
Flit is an animated talker and has spent the time not only playing but telling of her recent escapades. These range from teasing a snake into chasing her and leading it into knowting itself, finding a helpless bear cub and piping a behive to sleep so she can get some honey for the poor cub, and an ongoing endever to create paths that glow iat night due to a fungus she is cultivating. The paths will lead to all the houses of those who do not want to be bothered that live in the areas. She is quite proud of this last escapade and says it should start showing results withint a reay or so.
The tick is to ensure that all the targets are properly seeded with th fungus spres so that wherevr they move a new path will start to grow within a season or two and she laughs merily.

At you comments about dangerous work on the morrow she sighs Well I am glad to be off then. I am not fond of danger and even less fond of work I shal never understand why all you peple insist on working. Still you hav fed and taught me an enjoyabe game so it is only right I return the favor. It is not right to owe favors The last part is mumbled to herself and she pulls a snall satcher from her back (was it there before?) and begins digging through it.
Aug 30, 2023 4:34 pm
Rhidon listens to Flit's tales, and eyes widen at the mention of the glowing fungus paths. Glowing fungus... extremely clever!

At the mention of favors, Rhidon takes the opportunity to use his salesmanship to propose a deal. You're right about danger, but our work is to rescue a young woman. She was kidnapped by an old crone rumored to inhabit these parts.... I have a plan but it requires distraction. This is something you're quite skilled in. While I appreciate the offer of being taught a new game, and will perhaps take you up on that another evening, would you consider repaying this favor by aiding us?
OOC:
Based on his trade this feels like a 2d6, let me know if it would be something different.

Rhidon proposes a deal asking Flit to help distract the Crone - (2d6)

as this is a 'deal' and your are 'selling' Flit on this I think you can roll 3d6. When in doubt roll more and if I think it is too many I will simply ignore the last/leftmost dice

OOC:
Okay thanks, I'll roll one more here

Ridon manages to persuade the fey to "repay" he debt for the gaming experience by aiding him in his quest for the girl.
Flit
Ok, what's the plan and who is the target of these nefarious activities the small fey croons with a delighted and mischievous smirk. It wouldn't be the Crimson Crone now would it? That hag has no sense of humor let me warn you.
Sep 5, 2023 9:15 pm
Indeed, it is the Crimson Crone! Rhidon uses some of the cutlery and other items from their meal to visualize the plan for the fey.

So here's what I'm thinking... you aid us in creating a diversion near the Crone's lair, something to draw her into the woods. Then Krogan and myself will enter, find the girl, and make our way back to town. If you've already marked the path with glowing fungus, it should be easy to find.

With a twinkle in her eye Flit replies Can do. If you want to get into her house I better lead her far away. No problem there. But you better watch out for her pets. She always has one in her house or watching over the area is there is anything valuable outside. If the crone has a people kid it could be out in the animal pens or inside depending on what she wants with it.

Tell you what. You guys hide before I got get her attention then give me a couple of minutes to wind her up enough to lead her far enough away that when you trip her wards she will be so intent on me she will delay her return.

Fair warning though. If you kill a pet she will hunt you down.

The crones pets differ, from alligators to giant toads or insects to man eating plants. Flit explains a bit about the layout of the hut with glee throwing in the occasional comment on things you can do to torment the crone waving off your concerns about the crones retaliation as a worry for later and part of the thrill

He pats her on the back enthusiastily. This is an excellent plan Flit, and valuable information. Krogan and I will hide near the bridge and wait for you to lure the crone away.

Rhidon also takes a moment to talk with Krogan, making sure he understands that we are trying to avoid or distract the creatures as well, and should avoid engaging directly.
OOC:
I figure hiding is kind of a martial arts type move so I rolled it with adv below, just for clarity should I end up battling any creatures given my training is it possible to try subdual damage? Would that be a higher difficulty or anything like that?

Rolls

Hiding just outside of Crone's area - (3d6)

(335) = 11

OOC:
Martial arts is simply fighting without weapons. Sneaky is what let's you hide.
Flit flies off with a giggle and after a minute you hear her singing a satyrical song about a crone and hapless frog she has fallen in love with. The frog tries to rebuff the crones advances but this of course only spurs the cringe to every increasing efforts to score get love with each verse.

After several verses a scream fills the swamp, sending shivers down your spine, and a crimson cloud bursts out of the hut and begins chasing the fey who only laughs and continues singing as she dodged and begins leading the cringe away.
Sep 7, 2023 4:06 pm
Rhidon puts his hand on Krogan's shoulder to remind him to wait a moment. Flit told us to wait a couple minutes, let's be patient and listen for any friends.

With the Crone's sudden departure, Rhidon listens carefully to see if he can figure out where the girl or any of the pets might be.
OOC:
For my character, would this sort of standard perception stuff be 2d6?

Rolls

Listening for any other screams/growls - (2d6)

(15) = 6

Sep 7, 2023 6:31 pm
After a minute the singing and screeching fade and the noises of the swamp return. Not hearing any clear noise from across the way you move softly across the bridge and listen as you approach the pen and house.

The pen is currently empty though the smell indicates not long out of use. Continuing on to the hut you listen again and hear a slight whimper followed by an oddly deep and rumble growl(?).
