Book 1: To Assume Control in Narport

Sep 1, 2023 3:18 am
The four of you appear at the audience chamber of the Dean of the Reapers, Shanword Hill. The Dean is an impressive man, a gray-haired human dressed in his clerical robes. You know that no one could rise to the head of the Reapers without a great deal of skills, and Shanword is legendary amongst the organization for his many exploits in his younger years while climbing the ranks.

The past five years, however, he has served as the Dean of the Reapers, a mostly administrative position- though there are rumors that he may be in line to be promoted to Primate should he still live when Hapi calls the current head of her church back to her in death.

As you approach, Dean Hill looks up from a stack of papers that he is going over- they appear to be assignment documents.

"Greetings, junior Reapers. I know that it is not customary for the Dean himself to call on those of your rank to direct you personally, but I have a special assignment, and your superiors in the organization have flagged the four of you as having skills that will complement each other and be up to the task at hand.

That task, I'm afraid, it not some simple reaping to be done- would that I could just send you off to face down a necromancer and his horde of scum undead."
at this, the Dean makes the sign of the Reaping, a quick motion that sweeps from one shoulder to his waist opposite which is common amongst the followers of Hapi
OOC:
This would be the equivalent of crossing oneself for a Catholic
"No, I'm afraid that I am sending you into territory that is currently a little bit. . . uncharted. High Reaper Dominity has been called back to the Goddess of late, and since then there has been no word out of Narport, despite there being a church presence there. I need you to go, assume control of the city, make sense of what Dominity has left behind, and clear the territory of any and all those that should be brought back into compliance. Any questions?"

Khi Khe stands at attention, the dwarf dwarfed by the looming, cloaked figure of Umi just behind it, scythe stowed on its back. Her face cannot be seen under the darkness of her hood, but her raspy, rhythmic breathing still escapes. He shakes his head.

"No questions, honored Dean. Well… perhaps one. Do you have any clue what specific manner of task might await us in Narport, what troubles may lie ahead, or is information too limited for any of that?"
Sep 1, 2023 9:12 pm
Ehtycs lowers his hood, Just one, sir he says looking up at the Dean who towers greatly over his small 2'3" body Is there anyone from the church we should seek out in Narport when we get there?
Sep 1, 2023 11:28 pm
Fiden just sits and waits as the others ask questions of the dean and wonders why he took it upon himself to deal with us. Surely something of a lesser to do.
Sep 3, 2023 1:13 am
"What troubles lie ahead? Would that I could tell you, but I am a Dean in the Church of Hapi, not our God's beloved brother Pacifa-- a priest of death not prophecy, but if I were to hazard a guess I would say the usual type for Reaper's work- necromancers raising undead, wizards cheating death, other deities priesthoods resurrecting the dead and none of them wanting to pay as is only proper. Beyond that? Assuredly a deluge of overdue paperwork. Of that I can guarantee you."

"Our records on Narport are woefully incomplete. A Priest was sent there several years ago, and by last reports he has several locally trained acolytes- Priest Jonias was his name, but that is near all I can tell you about him."

"If there are no questions, I'd suggest you prepare yourselves- you can stay in the guest chambers here tonight and dine at my table, then you will have a journey of some weeks on your way to Narport."

Leandra stands at the back leaning against the wall playing with a coin in her left hand. Her silver right arm hangs oddly at her side still. She seems to be more focusing on the others in the room than the Dean, at least at first, clearly expecting the task to be more minor than it it is. The surprise at the psychopomp had been clear as she entered with a rapid whispered [b; why cna;t you manifest cool like that'[/b] at seemingly the air to the very perceptive.

At the reveal of their mission her surprise is clear and the coin nearly dropped before she tries to act cool and just nod in confirmation, not saying anything. As the dean makes the sign of Hapi the silver arm suddenly moves mirroring the sign, though again those perceptive would notice a look of frustration cross the young woman's face.

'One question... do we know why Dominity was recalled to Hapi? Old age or.. soemthing more sinister?
Sep 3, 2023 2:34 am
"Nobody knows the whole story, though we are assuming that it must have been old age. For a human to live to over a hundred and sixty years is unusual to say the least, but the Church records are quite clear on when Dominity joined the Reaper's and he had been a full Priest for for over fifty years when he assumed control in Narport which was a hundred years ago. Even had he begun as an acolyte at ten or eleven as some do, well, needless to say our great Goddess had been quite generous with the High Reaper already."
Sep 4, 2023 5:57 pm
"Your high one. We shall leave for Narport and fix all as you desire on the morning. May Hapi bless our travels."
Sep 4, 2023 7:11 pm
'Well my friends, tomorrow is tomorrow, but we still have an evening ahead of us. How about we go find and inn and get to know each other, since we will be working together. ' She seems to go to throw her arms around the shoulders of he two nearest to her, despite being at least a foot or two about everyone else, but only her left arm actually moves, the right staying rigidly at her side, which prompts an eye roll.
Sep 4, 2023 7:48 pm
"The Inn for a bit would be fine. We have rooms here awaiting us later." With us both being Hapi, Fiden doesn't pull away as her personal space is invaded some. Her Eagle would use its talon and bite. Fiden does even handle the bird.
Sep 4, 2023 10:56 pm
Leandra pulls back her left arm as the eagle starts to get agitated and lashes out. Whoah. Sorr.. .. As she talks the right arm suddenly snaps forward seemingly going for the bird. Her left grabs the wrist and pulls it down, and for a moment it looks like it's struggling.

'Easy there. Sorry... defensive reflexes. I didn't not mean to startle your bird.' She tries to offer the dwarf a friendly smile...even as she keeps an iron grip on the silver arm.

'Right inn it is. '

Note: Eagle is not present. It tends to not go inside buildings. Something about its 7' wing span. Sorry about mentioning anything about it to make it appear to be present. To be sure it is waiting outside the building watching.

The Old Empire Seat, while no longer the greatest city in the world, is still an ancient city of breathtaking beauty. Teeming with people, the city has the smell of most cities about it, but also has more great temples, cathedrals, and other grand public works than any other city in Kesperex, save perhaps the fabled Imperial Capital in the Eastern Plateau Lands.

The sense of history pervades the Empire seat- it was here in the second age that the Trinate War Gods Attrianna, Drexiesh, and Jarrett paraded the head of the dragon god whose name is never to be spoken through the streets and ushered in the end of the reign of dragons and their servants the kobolds.

The Empire Seat was old already then, steeped already in the history of a thousand years before Riverport, Narport, and the other cities of the Fertile North had even been founded, when the fae still ruled the vast uninterrupted forests that still dominated much of the regions North of the ancient wall.

Finding a public house to take a glass of ale or wine was simple enough, though choosing which one provided perhaps some difficulty- for any number can be found, catering to all tastes and income levels from dive bars full of sweaty peasants and slaves to effete wine bars where a single glass could buy and sell those peasants and slaves a dozen times over.

Ehtycs isn't really a drinker and he tends to avoid such places like taverns and inns when he can. Alright then, lets go. he says and he reluctantly follows the rest of the group.

OOC:
Apologies. Just started back at work yesterday after 6 weeks so was very tired when I read it, so read as that is what it was doing than what could happen if it were far.
'One drink is fine. I won;t go overboard.' The human seems to murmur to herself as the start out on their search. She'd learned lately that if she had more than a couple the drink would 'accidentally' end up on the floor.

As the settle into a place she immeadiatly gets a mug of ale, holding it her left her, and oddly away from her right side of her body. 'So if we're going to be working together, may as well get to know each other. Who's first? '
OOC:
If people would rather jump to the mission, happen to just say 'they went to the tavern and talked in stead. Just yeah she like to socialise.

She mentions to the party just before the Eagle comes, "That Cinder Eagle is mine. Don't touch or attack it."

Party will note that as we changed buildings, Fiden's Cinder Eagle came to her. "I shall be in another building for a while." she says to it as it lifts off. You immediately realize that the Eagle seems to understand common. This bird is more than just a wild Eagle.

While inside with a brew, "I be Fiden and you have met my Cinder Eagle. I'm a junior priest of Hapi, so should we need some healing than I can be of service. I'm also a lady of the wilds and fine huntress. I can supply us nourishment when we out of the city to save on the need for provisions."

Khi Khe briefly pauses at the door, looking to Umi. The skeletal hulk pauses, and looks back, no expression visible in the darkness. Khi Khe shrugs, then beckons her to follow. "Does not hurt to show off Hapi's might, just a little," he mutters as Umi's birdlike, skeletal toes clack against the floorboards, coming to a stop just behind where Khi Khe sits, hovering over him.

"I am Khi Khe Feathermane, a Postulant within the Church of Hapi. Even before my days here, I have indirectly served the goddess for many years. This will be my first mission as a Reaper." He turns over, looks up at the cloaked figure above. "She is Umi. A minor servant of Hapi, generously gifted by Hapi, bound to me as I am to her. Our relationship is a mutually beneficial one. I receive her protection, she ascends in the rankings of Hapi's host, all to the benefit of Hapi and the church. Please treat her with respect. Her appearance may be unsettling, but she is a dear friend."

After spending some time in the tavern getting to know one another, you return to dine with the Dean. His table is well set, offering scrumptious food and drink in an ordered manner-- seven course served each of them promptly by his liveried servants. It is clear that whatever his reputation, the Dean values orderliness above all.

The following morning you depart, and travelling with a caravan as far as the south western fork of the great river, board the charted river vessel the Church has provided. From there your journey is restful, if bumpy to those unaccustomed to water travel. The boat travels up the river, through the great confluence in Riverport, and on to Narport where you depart to find yourselves in a city you've never visited before but where you now exercise authority within the matters of the Church and the Reapers' purview.

You find yourselves disembarked in a busy dock where goods and passengers are being loaded and unloaded.

Fiden had no qualms with the boat trip despite she is a Fire Dwarf. Her Cinder Eagle was constantly around. Off and on it would land.

Well this has easy trip here. she says after disembarking. She eyes the going on's in the dock after having landed but seems to have her Cinder Eagle around but not anyplace obvious.

Ehtycs is glad to finally be off the boat, while it was uneventful he prefers to travel on land.

Thank Hapi for that he says as he stretches his body. We should probably head out to find Priest Jonias.
