Chapter 3 - Taking flight into uncertainty

–The Next School Day–
The following day at school, the rumors of the worm incident have spread, and they haven't done Robbie any favors. Throughout the day, she overhears snide remarks and teasing related to worms and dirt.

Tanya, for the most part, remains unaffected by these comments until an encounter with Oskar in the hallway. Oskar is a well-intentioned classmate but often struggles with understanding social norms. In a rather loud and enthusiastic voice, he asks Tanya about the types of worms she had the previous day and whether he should start his own worm farm at home, displaying his fascination with all things related to bugs. Izzy takes notice of this and seizes the opportunity to give Tanya the nickname "worm farm."

Surprisingly, the incident ended up bolstering Emilia's social standing. It was framed in a way that cast her as a victim, targeted by Robbie and Tanya, and as a target of Mr. Andersson's reprimand. At school, Izzy approached Emilia with apparent sympathy, saying, "I can't help but feel awful about how Mr. Andersson singled you out like that. It's just not fair, and I just wish there was something I could have done to stop it." It remained uncertain whether Izzy was being genuine or had ulterior motives.

–After School–
A commotion erupts in the schoolyard as a crowd of kids gathers around a lifeless, fluffy white dog. It's a grim sight, with the unfortunate animal bearing clear signs of having met a violent end, its body covered in peck marks made by birds. Each of you manages to catch a glimpse of the pitiful creature before Mr. Andersson intervenes, ushering the onlookers away to handle the unpleasant task of dealing with the aftermath. Frustration is evident in his muttered words, questioning why he always seems to be the one tasked with such unpleasant responsibilities.

You’re scene starts here, but it doesn’t have to be at this location. What do your characters do or where do they go?

Tanya approaches Robbie, feeling the levels of toxicity in the school a little too much for her taste.

"Was your day as shit as mine?" she asks, sarcastic. "Worm Farm, Izzy called me. Hilarious, huh?"

Then changing the subject, "Did you see the white dog killed by the birds? Did it look to you like the same dog that scared the pigeons yesterday?"
OOC:
did the dead dog look the same as the one from the brush?

OOC:
Yes

Robbie nods when Tanya asks about her day. "People kept making dumb comments about worms. It's so mean. We didn't even do anything. If anything, Izzy is the worm farm. She brought those things to school!" She sighs. "And Emilia didn't say anything to support us. I thought after yesterday, she would be on our side..."

When Tanya asks about the dog, Robbie also confirms. "I think it's the same one. Or at least the same breed." It wasn't a nice sight, but Robbie has seen dead animals on the farm before and even helped with butchering chickens so she can handle it. Even if it's a dog. "You think we could have saved him if we had done something different? I was too focused on the pigeon yesterday."
Sep 15, 2023 6:33 am
You could have back me up. The thought runs through Emilia's head alongside the image of Izzy shrugging and walking away yesterday. She bites the words back however and forces a smile. 'I get it. At least I was the only one who got dragged in with those two. It was sooo boring though. The worst.
The sight of the peck marks on the dog causes a moment of panic as Emilia stares at it before Mr Anderson starts to usher everyone away.

Was it the pigeons? Was the thing at Robbie farm dangerous. Perhaps she should forget the entire thing happened, stay away from Tanya and Robbie.

Curiosot was gnawing at her however... Along with Robjes words from the day before about friends, hanging out.

She catches sight of the two talking but doesn't approach, worried about her image if others saw. Instead she tries to catch one of their eyes and gestures with her head in the rough direction of their shared safe spot before heading in that direction.

"Saved the dog? Well, yesterday it looked more like the pigeons needed saving, from him. But this... Pigeons cannot kill a dog. And they cannot plan a... revenge. I think those things that were inserted inside them might make them dangerous, you know?..."

She catches a glimpse of Emilia. " Hey, look who's here. Seems she is asking us to go to the hideout... "
Sep 15, 2023 7:11 am
"But Freddie doesn't seem dangerous," Robbie argues. She decided that if she adopts a bird, she'll have to give him a name. And so she did. "He also doesn't seem very smart, though he's funny to talk to."

When Tanya points out Emilia, Robbie waves at her, probably more obviously than Emilia would have liked, then she turns to Tanya. "Let's go meet her then," she says, smiling happily at the fact that Emilia seemingly still wants to hang out with them, even if it's probably more about the birds than them.

— Moving Locations, The hideout —
OOC:
This is how I picture the hideout. However, it’s your space, and I encourage you to take narrative control and own it.
Within the school lies an abandoned wing consisting of a couple of rooms, perpetually locked and forgotten due to budget constraints preventing the much-needed renovations. Although the door to this area is locked, the frame around it is so warped that it can't fully latch, making it merely stuck. A forceful push is all it takes to swing the door open.

The corridor leading to this neglected area is dimly lit, with long-forgotten fluorescent lights overhead. Their hideout is a classroom in this area, its chalkboard covered in dusty equations and diagrams. Desks and chairs are pushed haphazardly against the walls, while cobwebs drape over the windows.

OOC:
would be fun if the access to the hideout was from a ventilation grill outside, so the locked door is actually solid and impassable? (unless you are the school keeper and you have the key). That would make it also accessible when the school grounds are closed (I imagine the locked door is within school grounds, while the secret grill is on the exterior wall on the outer perimeter.) How does this sound?
Like they always do when entering the hideout, they avoid going all at the same time, choosing moments of calm to sneak in one at a time.

Once inside, Tanya sits on the stacked desks in what she considers their corner of the hideout.

"I sincerely hope this place is still a secret? Or did you tell Izzy's barbie dolls to come play here?" she tells Emilia.
Sep 16, 2023 9:12 am
OOC:
I like that idea, B. But the access needs to be big enough for Robbie
"That would suck," Robbie replies to Tanya's question. "I like this place because we can get away from all the mean popular kids here. But we should furnish it at some point. Imagine if we could get beanbags in here! That would be so cool."
Sep 16, 2023 10:24 am
OOC:
Yeah a slight more hidden/have to look for entrance sounds god to explain why ithers haven't found it.
Of course I haven't.. Though they wouldn't step foot in here with all the dust and spiders anyway.

She wasn't a fan of the spiders either, but she would rather tolerate one crawling near her than scream and panic in front of these two.
She goes to the opposite corner o than Tanya, which has been cleaned of dust and cobwebs and sits on a desk with a sigh.

'So...? She looks expectantly athe there other two, especially Robbie.

"I've been talking with Freddie a bit since yesterday," Robbie tells Emilia. "That's the name of the pigeon we caught yesterday." She makes sure to say we and not I so that Emilia feels included. "He's not very smart, just like a regular bird. He likes food and shiny things. But I didn't find out anything else. I guess we have to work together for that." She looks at Tanya. "Aren't your parents scientists? Maybe they know something about this."
Sep 16, 2023 10:47 am
You named the pigeon? Emilia looks dumbfound for a moment

'Is.. It a good idea to keep it.. Just that dog. If that was the pigeons. Has it.. I mean.. Has' Freddie' seemed aggressive at all? '
Sep 16, 2023 10:52 am
Robbie frowned in mild confusion at Emilia's initial question. "Well, it would have been rude not to name him, right? All the animals at home have names." She then shakes her head at Emilia's concerns. "No, he hasn't seemed aggressive to me. He pecked at me once, but I think that was because he wants out of his cage. But anyway, pigeons can't kill dogs. That's ridiculous. It must have been some kind of bigger birds who did that."
Sep 16, 2023 10:58 am
She looks at Emilia for a long moment, trying to read her. What game is she playing?

Then turns to Robbie. "Yeah, I asked her about the birds, if she knew of these... experiments. She was shocked at the idea someone could do something like that... then started preaching about STEM..." she sighs and shrughs, "but that's my Mom for you..."

"I've been thinking about the dead dog. It's all very strange. Pigeons cannot kill dogs. So... someone has been inserting something to make them talk. That seems to have made them more dangerous, too."
Sep 16, 2023 11:04 am
'one maybe but.. Lots? There were.. Lots of of marks on it right..' Emilia frowns. 'Or are you suggesting some is making.. War pigeons? That's illy right? Why pigeons?

'I ut the dog.. Ifthey were defending themselves.. . Then they may look for the missing one?' She frown a concerned look towards Robbie before looking away to try and hide that she was maybe just slightly worried about the farm girl.
Sep 16, 2023 11:08 am
Robbie chews her lip in thought. "So you think they might come looking for Freddie?" she asks. "I still don't think he or the other pigeons are dangerous. They couldn't have hurt the dog. But maybe we should go to my place and check on him."
Sep 16, 2023 11:17 am
"I can think of two possibilities," she says, her pedantic tone surfacing in her words, "either the experiment on the birds went wrong, and the birds are reacting, becoming much smarter, and dangerous... Or... whoever is doing the experiment wants to control the birds, and the attack was part of it. Maybe they are testing on pigeons, to then insert devices on... rats, or even dogs..."

She looks at Robbie. "either case, it is not unthinkable that they could come for Freddie..."

OOC:
I think the ventilation grill outside is brilliant! I also love that Freddie now has a name.
Freddie indeed appears to be a friendly bird. In a remarkably short time, he has grown fond of Robbie. Now, whenever he sees her, he enthusiastically declares, "I'm Freddie." He seems rather proud of his own name. Most of his conversations revolve around food. Occasionally, he utters the word "Home," although Robbie can't quite discern whether it's meant as a statement or a question.

At this point, all three kids would be aware that they need an ornithologist or a good library is to understand more about the behavior of the birds.
OOC:
I’ve thought a lot about this following detail, and I'm kicking myself for not including it in the previous day's info. I think it was a missed opportunity on my part, so I’m going to include it post-facto. My goal is nothing short of making this the perfect adventure/mystery :D Sorry group!

Tanya's mother initially appeared unhelpful and unaware of any animal experiments. However, Tanya overheard her mother in a conversation with her father that suggested otherwise. He, too, expressed enthusiasm for directing the conversation toward STEM topics. Tanya heard her father briefly mention to her mother, "Didn't you once mention that animal experiments were Gunnar's area of research? If you happen to meet him again, you should inquire if he has any book recommendations for Tanya." Her mother responded in a manner that suggested she was uncomfortable with his particular type of animal research.
