"Bring down the cave behind us and be on our way, I say," Agna announces, looking into the pit with deep disgust. She snaps her fingers in front of Ezahne's nose. "We came in through the front, din't we? It shouldn't take long for the blizzard to pass."

Ezahne seems to calm don't a little as Agna mentions the blizzard passing soon. "But the ... that thing... It's back there. We can't go back that way? Maybe we can close the door and wait here?" she says, considering the terrible archeological loss of destroying the caves.
OOC:
Persuasion worked to calm her down, but convincing her to destroy these ruins goes against her motivation. You'll need a raise with -1 penalty
Jan 13, 2024 2:59 pm
OOC:
I'm confused. What thing is she talking about?
Jan 13, 2024 4:14 pm
CESN says:
She looks disturbed as she stops and looks at everyone in the room. "It got him. The thing. It got him. It's going to get us all. There's no way out. This place is cursed" she says with trembling breath.
OOC:
She's talking about the creature that killed Godric. Ezahne ran after him and then returned disturbed after witnessing the thing getting him. Just tying to keep the NPCs looking like more than a static sprite 🤣

The thing however, was described by Ibrahim's spirit, and looks like it could be an owlbear. Agna noticed tracks of something large before, so it could have been following/hunting you.
Jan 14, 2024 2:31 am
OOC:
Oh, I thought she was referring to the dead explorer - didn't realize that she meant Godric died too. It looks like the guards didn't stop either of them from running outside the cave then.

I feel like Agna's failing pretty badly at her job so far. Is there a way to stop these NPCs from randomly running off to their deaths?
Jan 14, 2024 10:48 am
OOC:
since the rime is 5e’s attempt at (non-gothic) horror, this extra module is sort of setting the paranoid mood with the classical "creature picks one character at a time". As written, they die. They do have motivations so presumably can be used if they survive but dnd adventures are not that well written 😅

Agna trying to trip him was a great idea 👌 you were unlucky with the roll. if it were a success, he would have not made it to where he was supposed to die.
Jan 14, 2024 11:16 am
Adaia tries to stay calm with her overwhelming excitement "Well there is nothing to do but stay here until the blizzard dies down. Everyone stay calm, there is no curse on this place. and then under her breath "well, maybe on this expedition"

"I understand everyones hesitation, but something like this is why some of us have come north. I must continue investigating - though once the blizzard dies down I'll happily leave. Ezhane, Nass are you with me? How about you Agna?"

Adaia will cross the room, slowly as she is taking in the details of the room - with the odd glance down at the hands.

Roleplaying Agna makes me think of trying to shepherd cats lol. Part of why it's feeling a bit random might be because I haven't really connected the dots between the situations - avalanche, Ibrahim's death in the snow, Ezahne running outside.
Agna's gaze flick between the elf and the dwarf, trying to make sense of the multiple streams of chatter in her direction. She closes her eyes, rubbing her temple. "Damnably long night," she mutters to herself. One look at Adaia tells the shaman that she would not be prised away from the accursed ruins inside this cave. "Stay put for now," Agna grates out. "Study the walls if ye must, but don't run off anywhere by yerself. That goes for you too," she says, jabbing a finger at Ezahne.

With the warning spoken, the orc goes back to the caravan to speak with Beorne. "Keep watch on yer flock, Steelstrike. I ain't having the eyes and hands to guard all of ye at the same time. There's two got out into the storm. Two more dead!" She sighs loudly. "I'll be needing yer help if we mean to reach the Towns with aid, and not end up as just more blood stainin' the snow."

As soon as Agna leaves the room, and despite telling the scholars to stay put and not touch anything or go anywhere, Adaia decides to cross the bridge, fascinated by their finding. The others obviously follow, even if they are not as comfortable as they would be, knowing the orc might return at any time...

On the other side of the pit, Adaia finds her way to another chamber through a number of collapsed chambers and dead ends. The floor of this chamber is broken open at the center, with chunks of ice lying strewn. The elf immediately notices that this chamber is frigid compared to the rest of the caves. She would say even colder than the blizzard outside. A quick inspection tells Adaia that the ice is free of dust and so, it must have formed recently. Confirming her suspicion, she spots an icy tunnel between the partially collapsed rear of the room. The slope upwards and the icy winds coming from it, suggests it might lead outside.

"There's more of those writings here" Nass points out to Ezanhe, who quickly checks them.

Beorne Steelstrike
It takes Agna a little bit to find Beorne, as he is constantly moving between tunnels, busy setting up the caravan to wait out the storm. The dwarf doesn't looks surprised as he hears the news from the orc. "Another two?" he sighs. "We already have some guards fall fer an ambush of em piercer creatures. Fell from the dark ta feed on soem good dwarves." He looks around to give some orders order the other traders. "Helda be cleanin the tunnels to be sure we can wait the storm safe." He stops for a moment, worried about something. "Aye, ye have anything in mind ta help?"
OOC:
Persuasion worked, so you can ask him for something (which could give you a bonus later!) . However, they are already aware of the dangers and working on it.
Jan 15, 2024 2:02 am
More bad news for Agna. "What piercer creatures?" she growls. "Keepin' yer people together would be a good start! No one goes anywhere alone. No one goes anywhere at all unless ye give them permission. And you don't give them permission to wander."

"Find Helda, tell her to get back here and stop messin' around in the tunnels. Clean them out? Ye already got a fine spot here. Going explorin' is only going to attract more attention from whatever is hidin' in these caves. We already found some monsters over yonder," she jabs a finger at the place where she left Adaia. "More'n enough for company. I'm goin' back there to try and keep it from killing more o' us, so don't go findin' new trouble when the old mess ain't been cleaned up yet!"
Jan 15, 2024 10:26 pm
"We better not head up there, it likely leads outside. Though it might be a useful escape route if the beast tries to attack." She keeps to herself that its just as likely that the beast uses it to attack us.

"What does the writing say, I'm afraid that is all were going to find down here, everything else has long been destroyed."

Adaia will take a look at the writing as way, whispering under her breath to cast Read Magic.

Adaia looks around the ruined place, finding nothing left but the old writings. What surprises her the most is that she actually recognizes those symbols! These are not the same as those from the door. Instead of Netherese, these are elven. Probably much more recent than the ruins themselves. It seems to be describing some sort of ancient ritual. It mentions how the Netherese found and used a naturally magic absorbing gem they called chardalyn and how the writer found a small trove of it in some old ruins. The ritual involved sacrificing seven of their most illustrious elders and bind the necromantic energies to these gems, which were used to craft a dark staff. The ritual is described as a replication of the creation of some legendary crystal shard... called crenshinibon.

"Hey!" Ezahne's shout distracts Adaia from the text. "This ice here looks different. It doesn't seem to melt the way the other does."

Beorne agrees with Agna and starts regrouping. Though it is clear he is not directly responsible for the other merchants who joined the dangerous trail at their own risk, his job being to lead them to Ten-Towns means he is still responsible for making sure they do so alive. Happy with the dwarf's response, the orc returns to check on those 3 wizards. There is a reason why wizards tend to die first, and that's because they can't keep their hands off of dangerous witchcraft stuff.

As Agna returns, she figures out they had already entered another chamber while she was away... She continues until she finds both Nass and Ezahne close to a deep gap in the broken floor, carefully inspecting pieces of broken ice. Adaia is in the far corner of the room, close to some strange, possibly cursed, writings.

And that's the moment that the chamber shudders... Ezahne and Nass struggling for balance...
Jan 20, 2024 1:35 am
Adaia desperately wants to record the writings, the details of the ritual would be invaluable. Though she is distracted by Ezahne and then the sudden quaking of the room, placing her hand on the wall for stability.
Seeing Agna come into the room "Hey Agna, you better get in here - we've found another exit though there's something off about it. And I've a bad feeling about that quake."
Jan 20, 2024 10:47 am
"Are you two tryin' to fall in there on purpose, or did your mothers never teach you fools the least bit o' sense?" Agna bellows when she sees where the scholars have positioned themselves. "Get back from there!"

The orc struggles to keep her balance on the shuddering ground, reminding her unpleasantly of her time aboard the Icebreaker. Managing to keep her footing, she marches forward and drags the two back away from the pit by force.

Nass and Ezahne, surprised to see Agna return, quickly move away from the gap on the floor, though Ezahne stops to grab some of the ice crystals just a little further, taking advantage of the orc's distraction as Adaia to show the exit. It doesn't take a second after the elf mentions her bad feeling or an immense creature to crash through the new exit tunnel into the room, filling it with a shower of show and ice.

As the snow and powdered ice settles, a huge creature with shards of blood frozen into its fur and feathers comes into view. Callous intent burning in her crystalline blue eyes, she stares intently at you and lets loos an ear-piercing shriek.

You hear an earsplitting crack coming from the ceiling just about Ezahne, the scholar turning her eyes away from the ice she was collecting, freezing in terror as a huge chuck of ice starts to detach.
OOC:
Ok, the creature that's been hunting you shows up and a massive bit of ceiling is about to fall on Ezahne. The owlbear uses fearsome roar, so you have to save that. I guess (counter)intimidation is the most suitable skill on the list

Just going to roll first, and then edit my post based on the result, I don't have high hopes for Adaia haha
Adaia sees the huge beast barrel in, and she begins to tremble in fear, knees and hands shaking. The splitting of ice makes her cower reflexively and the final straw, the beasts roar - Adaia screams out in fear and turns to flee "Run! It's here, oh god we're doomed!"

Adaia is terrified of the huge beast and for a good reason. As the elf cowers, she witnesses the huge chuck of ice detaching from the ceiling with an earsplitting crack and crashing to the ground with immeasurable force. The only thing of where Ezahne once stood frozen in panic is a pile of shattered ice and the slowly growing pool of dark-red blood...

"Oh gods! I'm not dying here!" Nass shouts terrified, a beam blue-white light streaks from her hands as she uses the first spell she can remember to attack the creature. The beast seems to ignore her magic, staring at Agna as the orc seems to challenge it.
OOC:
Ok, this is a boss fight. it has 3 legendary resistances so I'm going to need 4 successes or a critical hit to beat it.

Adaia is frightened this turn so has -1 disadvantage on every roll
