While the others prepare for the bitter cold, Agna begins to walk around the perimeter of their makeshift camp. The mood of the survivors is somber, with few words exchanged between traveling companions. Every few steps, Agna scratches a marking on the ground with the butt of her staff, warding the area from bad spirits. It looks to be an evil night ahead.
OOC:
Magic Circle time.

Izuhn will take account of all the survivors and make note of anyone that wasn't found. He also tries to determine if any of the cargo found included the box he was tasked to deliver.

Once satisfied with the answer, Izuhn will settle in near the wagons and the things he had collected. He'd love to offer up some hope, but portents had been bad and so far the journey had matched them.
OOC:
Are there any named NPC's that we didn't find?

Adaia will try and find a warm spot near by Ezahne and Nass, checking in to make sure they're both okay. Looking at the caravan and the general morale Adaia wonders if they'll ever make it...

The night is long and cold. Specially for Adaia who is facing to the extreme cold of the Spine of the World for the first time. Even as she manages to catch some sleep, she is frequently wakes half-frozen and no magic flame or mundane blanket seems to be enough to keep her safe from the extreme temperatures.
OOC:
The night was cold, wet and uncomfortable so no one restores fatigue. Adaia gets frostbite, and is not able to recover from fatigue until she finds a proper warm and dry place to rest (next town). All named NPCs are still alive :D
In the morning, the night storm has abated but the temperature is still dropping, and the wind causes exposed skin to ice over. Thunder rattles overhead as snow, sky, and land blend in whiteout conditions. Lightning in the clouds overhead cause irregular bursts of light that make seeing harder still. In the distance, you can make out the dark shape of a mountain peak looming overhead. Beorne catches up with Agna, rubbing his hands to warm up as he waits for Helda to finish brewing some warm herbal infusion to warm up everyone "Maybe there be some better shelter in there, what ye think?" he points to the mountains. The pass winds through rocky peaks, narrow paths, and wide saddles, but is made far more treacherous by falling snow and ice driven by the constantly howling winds. "Too dangerous to move fast, its gonna take another night to be safe"

Itā€™s uncomfortably, dangerously cold. The moment you stop stops moving, you feel the sharp pain from freezing extremities and know death is coming if you stay still for long.
OOC:
How uncomfortable was the night, what do you do this morning and what if your character feeling about the trip?

There's another number of hazards waiting you today so give me a survival, nature or any other suitable roll to avoid them

"We won't fare well if we stay here neither," Agna warns. "There's been a visitor in the night. I won't wager that it'll be friendly." She takes Beorne to inspect the tracks she'd found breaking one of the lines of protection she drew the night before.

The orc raises her head to peer at the far mountains, consulting her mental image of the lands ahead. In their current condition, the original route she planned would take a heavy toll. If there is an alternative, she would lead them there instead.
OOC:
I'll raise the failed Nature roll.

Adaia doesn't really wake; she's barely slept. As the camp begins to move, she lets out a long sigh and struggles to her feet. Her muscles are stiff and she looks pale, with large bags under her eyes. Joining the group "Whatever path takes us to the nearest place with a hearth gets my vote"

Too long away from the Dale has dulled Izuhn's sense of its danger. The losses of the caravan weigh heavily on his mind like the cold weighs on his body.

The next day's light brings another opportunity, though, and there's no time to waste as they move. This time, however, he keeps a sharper eye out for what the wilderness may have to throw at them.

"A visitor? Ye thinkin that bloody Ogre came back fer more? Would have bet my beard the thing was dead good" After checking the tracks that Agna found the dwarf stops to think for a moment. "Them not lookin like no ogre I have seen before. Maybe some sort of em wild beasts?"

Winter

Winter
Having spent some extra time to recover as much as they could and bury the dead as properly as conditions allowed, the caravan finally gets on its way again, though as a much slower pace than before the tragic avalanche. Agna immediately sets out ahead of the convoy to scout any possible dangers and alternative paths. She noticed an area of light, powdery snow atop heavy, slushy snow and, finding a broken tree branch, she tests it. "Quicksnow!" she warns the others as they approach and guides them around the dangerous area.

After her terrible experience with the deadly cold mountains, Adaia is now much more aware of the real dangers of the Ten Trails. Feeling much better after having Agna's warm brew, the elf is paying as much attention for any surprises on the way. "Stop! There a crevasse!" she shouts at some of the merchants walking besides the wagon where she as she notices the long deep crack hidden by a thin crust of ice and snow. Unsure how long the crevasse is, she uses her magic to blow the snow away and reveal the entire 10-foot-deep hole in the snowpack.
OOC:
We can have Adaia healing 1 fatigue from the tea, though frostbite still applies
Izuhn stays in the back, making sure not only that no one gets lost. Off in the distance, he notices that the storm looks . . . odd; behind them, the winds are bringing snow of a dark crimson color. "The snow, cover youselves!" he warns everyone as the whirling snow becomes stinging pellets of coppery, dark-red sleet, which blows into eyes, noses, and mouths and threatens to freeze solid everything in its path. Luckily, everyone caught in the icy winds manages to climb up or hide behind a wagon, but the dwarf is still disturbed by the blood like appearance of the snow...

After traveling for almost half of the day and having avoided many of the potential dangers on the trail, you notice the wind abates for a moment. Not having to fight the icy winds boosts everyone's moral and the caravan pick up the pace. However, something thatā€™d normally be a good thing, unexpectedly turns into a new danger, halting the progress. Sparkling snowflakes the size of dinner plates lazily drift down from the storm above and, while beautiful, theyā€™re razor sharp - something that becomes immediately apparent as the wind picks back up and sends the snowflakes whizzing around the area cutting limbs off the evergreen trees.
OOC:
You basically have ice daggers flying your way now. What do you do? How do you help the others?
Oct 26, 2023 11:17 pm
OOC:
Ooh, this seems like a hard one.
Izuhn watches as the outlandish snowflakes slice through tree limbs and head right for the group. He quickly turns his eyes towards the heavens and asks for some help, before using his Divination magic to offer a few seconds of prescience to himself and anyone that he can warn.

Unfortunately, this warning comes a moment too late for Izuhn and one of the snowflakes catches him where it hurts worst.... in the beard.

Thankfully, only the bottom braid is cut, but its clear that Izuhn is as frazzled as the bottom of his newly loosed facial hair.

Adaia stops for a moment, enjoying the brief respite from the harsh cold winds - standing looking up at the sky, taking in the beautiful scene of the snowflakes falling. A wind whips up from out of nowhere, and the snowflake that she was admiring brushes past her face - a single drop of blood rolls down, rubbing her face, she sees the blood and looks around for cover.

"Quick, find cover! Get low to the ground, the snowflakes!" She rushes over to the nearest group of travellers and begins her usual ritual attempting to control the surrounding snow and create a barrier against the wind.

If I want to find some form of shelter for the group to hide in, is it Survival, Search or Nature?
Oct 27, 2023 10:09 am
OOC:
Search is more to meticulously looking around (sort of investigation), Nature is more ("book-able") knowledge so I guess survival applies the best here since it's a more practical skill on how not to die in the wild :D

Snowy giant owls
OOC:
Izuhn gets one fatigue and the sympathy of every dwarf in the caravan.
Izuhn's magic allows him to rally everyone into safety, as Adaia's snowstorm protects everyone as they reach for safety. However, Izuhn takes one second too long for himself, and one of the ice razors chops off his braid, and with it, a bit of his dwarveness. Agna manages to spot a cave in the distance, which will provide shelter to everyone until the storm calms down. She guides the caravan though the swirling snow, which she notices moves in odd patterns, but she can't stop to think of it. Safety is her priority.

As the cave she spotted comes into view, so does new trouble. Withing the odd snow lambent, yellow-orange eyes burning with malice suddenly open. And the white creatures that have so far remained invisible in the snow take flight, clearly intended on driving you away.

Not sure if elementals count as evil spirits for Magic Circle, but we'll find out! Agna wants to trap them inside the cave so they can't approach.
