Session 5: Trek to Ten-Towns

Winter

CESN

As the sun rises, everyone is ready to recommence the travel to Icewind Dale. The road stretches out before you, the sky gray with clouds, the ground white with snow and the mountain range rising to block the horizon. Beorne Steelstrike estimates this will be a 4-day trip at best as the fresh snow from the storm will slow overland travel throw the dangerous mountain passage to a crawl.

Just past midday, you come across a smashed cart at the side of the road. Two sets of tracks lead away from the cart into a grove of snow-covered fir trees.

Oct 2, 2023 10:32 am
The line of caravans slow to a pause as they come across the wreckage. Agna's brow creases when she sees the broken cart. A lone cart meant that its drivers had been either desperate or confident. Either way, misfortune had clearly struck.

She leans forward to inspect whether the tracks were made by man or beast.
OOC:
I'm rolling Nature to see what kind of tracks they are instead of Tracking, since Agna isn't trying to follow them for now.

Oct 2, 2023 7:49 pm
"A few of us head onto the thicket then?" Izuhn hops down from his riding place. "I'd rather find the surprise than it find me later."

Helda approaches you "Ye might be right there. No want no surprises this far north" She takes a very quick look at the tracks and agrees with Agna. "Boots and horse yes... Maybe someones get caught by the storm?"
Oct 3, 2023 10:02 am

The group quickly picks up the tracks leading them away from the cart. The four of you follow the tracks into the fir grove for about a half-mile into the grove, finding a grisly scene at the end of them: the half-eaten frozen carcasses of a half-elf man and a horse. Adaia can't tell what killed the half-elf, and any tracks around the scene seem to have been lost to Izuhn, but Agna is able to tell those look like Wolf bites.

Oct 3, 2023 12:09 pm
OOC:
I agree that the mechanic of getting XP when rolling doubles below a skill is kinda wonky. Agna has collected a bunch of experience since the game started and hasn't spent any yet lol. I do like how doubles above a skill's level causing that skill to level up.

Agna only purses her mouth at the grisly scene. "That man ain't been dead long," she says after studying the corpse for a long moment. "Even with the cold an' all, body's too fresh." So decided, she ushers the group back and arranges the reagents for a summoning around the dead half-elf - a raven's feather, the eye of a lamb, a branch newly snapped from the tree.
OOC:
Gonna assume that the successful Nature roll lets me decide that the corpse is recently dead, so Agna can finally use Commune With Dead!

Oct 4, 2023 11:38 am
When the ghost continues its aimless mumbling, the shaman presses her lips into a line. Perhaps this one was too far gone. Sometimes that happened, when the dead wanted to escape what had happened to them. She tried once more, adding more force to her voice. "What happened here, ghost?"

Nothing. Agna uses the butt of her staff to break the pattern she'd arranged around the corpse, dismissing the spirit. "Not much help from this one," she informs Izuhn and Adaia. "Far as I can tell, something was taken from him afore he died. A woman, maybe."

Oct 4, 2023 11:01 pm
Agna turns to the dwarf, her brows raised. "I ain't sure how. You got a way to hear the ghost if I raise it?" she asks. "I can try the ritual, but no point doin' it if the only one who knows how can't talk to the spirit."
Oct 5, 2023 12:49 am
Izuhn fumbles a bit. "Er...well... I've not ever talked to a spirit. If your magic keeps it to only you then I guess not." Izuhn shrugs his shoulders. "That leads us to a dead end here then?"
Oct 5, 2023 3:21 am
The orc weighs Izuhn's words for a moment. "Don't rightly know," she says. "If ye think it's worth a try, well."

She arranges the items used for the ritual again, this time around the remains of the horse. A ghostly horse appears in the air, head moving around in confusion, but a glance to her side shows no sign that Izuhn's noticed the summoning. Agna shakes her head. "Can't seem to make it show to none but me."

Beorne prepares the abandoned wagon ("no point in leaving behind sturdy works like em") and in no time you are on the move again. The next day is mostly uneventful, besides the common difficulties for crossing a narrow mountain pass after a snow storm and the casual sighting of potentially troublesome local wild life, but nothing came out of it.

Youā€™ve traveled for two days without interruption and you expect to reach the other side of the Spine of the World soon. Night is falling however, so that would have to wait for tomorrow. The night is long and cold. Specially for Adaia who is facing to the extreme cold of the Spine of the World for the first time. Even as she manages to catch some sleep, she is frequently wakes half-frozen and no magic flame or mundane blanket seems to be enough to keep her safe from the extreme temperatures.
OOC:
The night was cold, wet and uncomfortable so no one restores fatigue. Adaia gets frostbite, and is not able to recover from fatigue until she finds a proper warm and dry place to rest (next town). All named NPCs are still alive :D
In the morning, the night storm has abated but the temperature is still dropping, and the wind causes exposed skin to ice over. Thunder rattles overhead as snow, sky, and land blend in whiteout conditions. Lightning in the clouds overhead cause irregular bursts of light that make seeing harder still. In the distance, you can make out the dark shape of a mountain peak looming overhead. Beorne catches up with Agna, rubbing his hands to warm up as he waits for Helda to finish brewing some warm herbal infusion to warm up everyone "Maybe there be some better shelter in there, what ye think?" he points to the mountains. The pass winds through rocky peaks, narrow paths, and wide saddles, but is made far more treacherous by falling snow and ice driven by the constantly howling winds. "Too dangerous to move fast, its gonna take another night to be safe"

Itā€™s uncomfortably, dangerously cold. The moment you stop stops moving, you feel the sharp pain from freezing extremities and know death is coming if you stay still for long.

Having spent some extra time to recover as much as they could and bury the dead as properly as conditions allowed, the caravan finally gets on its way again, though as a much slower pace than before the tragic avalanche. Agna immediately sets out ahead of the convoy to scout any possible dangers and alternative paths. She noticed an area of light, powdery snow atop heavy, slushy snow and, finding a broken tree branch, she tests it. "Quicksnow!" she warns the others as they approach and guides them around the dangerous area.

After her terrible experience with the deadly cold mountains, Adaia is now much more aware of the real dangers of the Ten Trails. Feeling much better after having Agna's warm brew, the elf is paying as much attention for any surprises on the way. "Stop! There a crevasse!" she shouts at some of the merchants walking besides the wagon where she as she notices the long deep crack hidden by a thin crust of ice and snow. Unsure how long the crevasse is, she uses her magic to blow the snow away and reveal the entire 10-foot-deep hole in the snowpack.
OOC:
We can have Adaia healing 1 fatigue from the tea, though frostbite still applies
Izuhn stays in the back, making sure not only that no one gets lost. Off in the distance, he notices that the storm looks . . . odd; behind them, the winds are bringing snow of a dark crimson color. "The snow, cover youselves!" he warns everyone as the whirling snow becomes stinging pellets of coppery, dark-red sleet, which blows into eyes, noses, and mouths and threatens to freeze solid everything in its path. Luckily, everyone caught in the icy winds manages to climb up or hide behind a wagon, but the dwarf is still disturbed by the blood like appearance of the snow...

After traveling for almost half of the day and having avoided many of the potential dangers on the trail, you notice the wind abates for a moment. Not having to fight the icy winds boosts everyone's moral and the caravan pick up the pace. However, something thatā€™d normally be a good thing, unexpectedly turns into a new danger, halting the progress. Sparkling snowflakes the size of dinner plates lazily drift down from the storm above and, while beautiful, theyā€™re razor sharp - something that becomes immediately apparent as the wind picks back up and sends the snowflakes whizzing around the area cutting limbs off the evergreen trees.

Unfortunately, this warning comes a moment too late for Izuhn and one of the snowflakes catches him where it hurts worst.... in the beard.

Thankfully, only the bottom braid is cut, but its clear that Izuhn is as frazzled as the bottom of his newly loosed facial hair.

However, Izuhn takes one second too long for himself, and one of the ice razors chops off his braid, and with it, a bit of his dwarveness. Agna manages to spot a cave in the distance, which will provide shelter to everyone until the storm calms down. She guides the caravan though the swirling snow, which she notices moves in odd patterns, but she can't stop to think of it. Safety is her priority.

As the cave she spotted comes into view, so does new trouble. Withing the odd snow lambent, yellow-orange eyes burning with malice suddenly open. And the white creatures that have so far remained invisible in the snow take flight, clearly intended on driving you away.

However, she is brought back from her thoughts as Ezahne mumbles incoherently and takes them to the cave entrance. "I. The guard. He was wounded by that beast. I just check if he was... Could find him. I retraced, maybe you know. Wounded was behind. And then then" She stops just outside the caveā€™s mouth, where you find whatā€™s left of Ibrahim. For lack of a better description, he's been torn limb from limb and their component parts arranged in an unusual geometric pattern in the snow. "Was it. The Ogre?"

The only indications of what happened are the tracks of a large creature, a bear perhaps, quickly being erased by the wind-driven snow, making it impossible to track the creature. Whatever it is, it is probably still out there, waiting in the storm.

ahahah well at least there is a roll Agna fails and doesn't level up šŸ¤£
Despite Izhun's and Adaia's reticence about going out in the storm, Agna insists that they can't rest until whatever is out there is stopped. That beast is venturing way to close to the group for anyone to be safe. She walks into the storm ignoring the freezing winds and wonders around for a moment, but it seems that all traces of the creature have been erased by new layers of snow.
Nov 14, 2023 8:17 pm
Adaia comes to the entrance of the cave following Agna, but doesn't go outside and calls into the storm "The storms too strong Agna! We won't ever be able to find it, it'll just find us or someone else! Best we stay together until it's passed."
Nov 16, 2023 2:27 am
The wind buffets Agna as she trudges through the frigid ground, looking for signs of the beast that savaged Ibrahim, but she comes up with nothing that might lead her to the killer. Any track it might have laid on the snow had been obscured by the falling snow, and this is an area in which she has little expertise. Despite this, she stays stubborn in surveying the area for a while before returning to the cave. "I'll be on the next watch," the shaman declares.
Nov 16, 2023 3:56 am
Izuhn sighs at Agna's hard-headed insistence. He then casts a glance over his shoulder deeper into the cave and sighs again. "We might need more than one watchmen. There's no telling if this cave is safe or not. Honestly, it might be worth exploring somewhat deeper even if just to distance ourselves from the creature outside."

Izuhn also mutters under his breath. "Guess it's time for the next deadly circumstance."

OOC:
So if I got correctly, Agna stays and Izuhn goes deeper into the caves. What will Adaia do?
Agna remembers the tracks left by some large creature during the night. Those tracks would match the beast described by Ibrahim, which in turn would mean that thing has been pursuing them for some time. If it is anything like their well known forest cousins from the south, either the caravan made the mistake of entering its territory, or worse, it is hungry.

Whichever is the case, the orc knows the cave entrance cannot be left unguarded...
Izuhn decides Agna will need backup for her task and goes deeper in the cave, looking for Beorne to update him on the outside dangers. The caravan master agrees to have some extra guards work with Agna, but he is worried about Nass' findings. Of course an artificiallly dug tunnel would tingle the curiosity of most dwarves in the caravan, so Helda was send with a group of dwarves to explore what he is calling "the ruins".

Izuhn follows the short tunnel Nass pointed out, which transitions from unworked stone to a corridor of hewn stone ending in a grand chamber. The chamber would be in complete darkness if it were not for a the torches carried by three members of the caravan:
- Ezahne stands in front of an ice-covered door made of white marble with streaks of gray and blue, fascinated with the Draconic writings and diagrams on it.
- Nass is looking around the chamber, currently staring at the ornate ceiling overhead
- Godric appears to be searching a long-cold remnants of a camp.

You her the echo of steps and whispers from the darkness, but you can't tell from where...
Nov 20, 2023 1:40 am
Adaia ponders the bodies outside the cave, but doesn't think a proper burial is possible anyway, that and the excitement of the tunnels draws her away. She'll go with Izuhn and seeing Nass poking about will wander over.
"Quite amazing isn't it, what are you looking at here?"
Adaia will study the surrounds and the ceiling to determine if she knows anything about them or their origin.

Nass turns back to illuminate Adaia as she ask her about the cave. "Ah yes, very impressive. Come, look at all of this" Nass takes the elf around the cave showly moving her torch to illuminate the walls around the door, revealing the detailed bas-relief carvings, depicting numerous humanoids casting spells which appear to alter entire landscapes. Leading to the ceiling, you can see depictions of floating cities as grand as Neverwinter or Waterdeep, and above them the drawings of ancient gods who are somewhat familiar, yet distinctly different from the ones revered today.
OOC:
Between your success and Nass...
As you discuss the nature the deities represented, you both notice a symbol that was similar, but not exactly, that of Mystra. This could point to the humanoids being clerics of the deity of magic. You both heard the legends of the floating cities of the ancient magocracy of Netheril, a powerful civilization that has been gone for more than a millennia now. Some within the Arcane Brotherhood even claim to be the successors (at least spiritually) of such a mighty empire, studying and trying to recreate some of their long lost spells. "The floating cities were from the Second Age as it requires the magic of the Nether Scrolls, so this must represent events from about 4 or 5 thousands years ago. I'm guessing the cave itself is from a latter time, perhaps a wizard copied it from some book?" as Nass turns to show more of the carvings, you notice some particularly terrifying pictograms. The humanoids and their servants appear to be dead, with the central figure seemingly a emaciated humanoid giving a sermon or lecture of a group of rotting corpses. Nass doesn't seem to pay attention to the carvings at all and continues "Well Ezahne was the one who came looking for ruins so she might know more about this"
Nov 22, 2023 10:14 am
"Yes where is she? She'll be amazed at our luck stumbling upon this."
Adaia is going to take some time and sketch some of the architecture, symbols and pictograms. As she does she wonders about the purpose of the room, and how it came to be here. Is the rest of the cave similar or does this seem out of place?

The symbols and pictograms catch Adaia's curiosity as she tries to put it all together. Who, and why, would anyone build this place? She can't tell for sure, but it does looks like it was build into the mountain, like a Dwarven stronghold... though the references to Netheril probably mean this is human made.

Nass turns her torch towards the door in the wall "She's been staring at the door for awhile now". Adaia can see the other's woman's shape moving in the darkness just out of the light's reach.
Nov 23, 2023 6:11 am
Adaia will find Izuhn, as she thinks a dwarf should surely be able to make some sense of what we're seeing.
"Izuhn, what do you make of this? Underground construction sounds like dwarven, but the motifs are human and of a race of men known to live in flying cities to make it harder to deduce what is going on."
Nov 24, 2023 1:21 am
At the cave entrance, Agna keeps watch in silence. Banter and questions from the other guards Beorne sent to join her is answered in grunts or single sentences. With no sign yet of the beast making another attack on their temporary camp, she scans the skies for any sign that the blizzard is beginning to cease.

"Izuhn, there is a riddle on that door, Ezahne thinks that something called Ioun stones need to be inserted to unlock it. This journal describes the stones and there are many similarities in the notes and the riddle. I believe these pebbles are either Ioun stones or fabrications of them. The scholar takes another look at the journal as the elf looks inside the bag. She quickly notice that all the peddles in the bag are also depicted around the outside of the door forming a circular pattern with a chute at its center, just under the Netherese text.

Inside the bag Adaia finds:
* Three spheres: one marbled pink-and-green, one faceted clear, and one incandescent blue
* Two prisms: one dusty-rose and one vibrant purple;
* Two spindles: one clear and one pearly-white
* One pink rhomboid
* One pale-lavender ellipsoid

Judging from the door diagrams, four seem to be missing.

Adaia carefully drops the stones in the central chute, trying to match them to the ancient riddle, under the excited supervision of Ezahne. Once she places the last stone, there's a loud noise of old machinery moving and the stones rolling on hard surfaces and then, little gaps open under the stone symbols, and they are returned. Nothing else was happening."Strange, I was sure we got it." Ezahne says confused, checking her notes. "Ah! Wait. Let's try switching these two here."

Clearly nervous with all the noises behind the door, Godric interrupts Ezahne. "Wait. Did you hear those sounds? You can't just put those things in there! Who knows what sort of traps and other nasties these people left here!" he soves everyone aside and starts checking the door, listening closely to every sound as he himself drops the stones.

One he is done, the door slides open with the grinding of stone. The grad entry of the room is covered with faded frescoes of life and magic matching those of the Netheril Empire. You all look into the dark space in silence and, a heartbeat later, you sense a pulse of arcane energy and notice, in the far wall, something written in sticky blood: Godric Orchard.

The man shrieks in terror and runs out of the ruins towards the cave entrance in desperate panic.

As Adaia enters the chamber, she noticed a weak, sickly light from an undetectable source seems to illuminate it from. At the center, The elf notices a stone bridge, each stone carefully worked to resemble a bone, giving the structure a eerie feeling as it crosses over a dark pit covered by a thin fog. Like outside, Adaia notices the remains of detailed frescoes depicting what look like powerful mages surrounded by scores of seated students taking notes. Spread across the walls skeletal attendants are shown cleaning, making deliveries, and bringing food to these mages. There are a number of scenes that attract the elf's attention. Someone coaxing a spirit from the body of a recently deceased human, under the watchful supervision of a mage; a group of people conducting a ritual in a graveyard, as the dead raise from their graves and the townsfolk run away in panic; a mage appears to be vivisecting a screaming gnome as other stand by taking notes. The last one depicts two elder mages standing over a kneeling apprentice as she cuts off her own right hand.

It is after seeing this last on that Adaia notices all the powerful looking mages in the frescoes are missing this right hands. She can't tell for sure, but all these dark arts seem to suggest this was a necromancy academy. As she reaches the conclusion she trips on broken piece of the wall. Everything goes deadly silent for a moment and then suddenly an absolutely horrifying scratching skittering noise starts, echoing throughout the entire room. Adaia assumes the noise is related to whatever magic was activated by the door trap, and its source must be hidden under the thin fog...

The others obviously follow, even if they are not as comfortable as they would be, knowing the orc might return at any time...

On the other side of the pit, Adaia finds her way to another chamber through a number of collapsed chambers and dead ends. The floor of this chamber is broken open at the center, with chunks of ice lying strewn. The elf immediately notices that this chamber is frigid compared to the rest of the caves. She would say even colder than the blizzard outside. A quick inspection tells Adaia that the ice is free of dust and so, it must have formed recently. Confirming her suspicion, she spots an icy tunnel between the partially collapsed rear of the room. The slope upwards and the icy winds coming from it, suggests it might lead outside.

"Find Helda, tell her to get back here and stop messin' around in the tunnels. Clean them out? Ye already got a fine spot here. Adaia looks around the ruined place, finding nothing left but the old writings. What surprises her the most is that she actually recognizes those symbols! These are not the same as those from the door. Instead of Netherese, these are elven. Probably much more recent than the ruins themselves. It seems to be describing some sort of ancient ritual. It mentions how the Netherese found and used a naturally magic absorbing gem they called chardalyn and how the writer found a small trove of it in some old ruins. The ritual involved sacrificing seven of their most illustrious elders and bind the necromantic energies to these gems, which were used to craft a dark staff. The ritual is described as a replication of the creation of some legendary crystal shard... called crenshinibon.

Though it is clear he is not directly responsible for the other merchants who joined the dangerous trail at their own risk, his job being to lead them to Ten-Towns means he is still responsible for making sure they do so alive. Happy with the dwarf's response, the orc returns to check on those 3 wizards. There is a reason why wizards tend to die first, and that's because they can't keep their hands off of dangerous witchcraft stuff.

As Agna returns, she figures out they had already entered another chamber while she was away... She continues until she finds both Nass and Ezahne close to a deep gap in the broken floor, carefully inspecting pieces of broken ice. Adaia is in the far corner of the room, close to some strange, possibly cursed, writings.

And that's the moment that the chamber shudders... Ezahne and Nass struggling for balance...

Adaia desperately wants to record the writings, the details of the ritual would be invaluable. Though she is distracted by Ezahne and then the sudden quaking of the room, placing her hand on the wall for stability.

"Are you two tryin' to fall in there on purpose, or did your mothers never teach you fools the least bit o' sense?" Agna bellows when she sees where the scholars have positioned themselves. "Get back from there!"
