"Mmhmm, knowledge is always good," Krisanna mumbles, trying to keep her eyes open and focused. She moves to the nearby washbasin and splashes cold water on her face and gives her cheeks a few brisk slaps. "Ohh, ok, better. Color me intrigued," she adds a little more perkily.

Lothar is bleary-eyed as well and wears only the trousers he pulled on after Annabella knocked at his door. Unlike Browyn, the man shows no compunction about walking into the girls’ room. He does his best to listen to the words that tumble from the not-really-a-barmaid, then he shrugs his brawny shoulders.

"Sounds great. But why all this skulkery?" he asks simply.

OOC:
Books and notes found, so here we go again.
The Skulduggery as you call it is because Those I am associated with are not the only people invested in the Misty Vale. I am sure you saw the Knight in the tavern room. She is part of the Keepers of the Immaculate Flame. They seek to bring back the Dragon Empire. she looks you all over and then states, Maybe I should start at the beginning. Settle in as this may take a bit.

A thousand years ago, the vile demon Sathmog came to our world. His prophet was a village priest named Azrahel Koth. The demon whispered dark secrets in his ear until his magic grew so powerful that he could open a rift between the worlds and allow his dark master to take physical form. With Azrahel Koth as his herald, Sathmog proclaimed a demonic realm in the world of humans that lasted two centuries. It was a time of darkness and evil, but also one of incredibly rapid human expansion at the expense of the elder kin – dwarves, elves, giants, and halflings.

As time passed, the opposition to Sathmog grew, until one day a young hero named Eledain managed to summon the ancient dragons charged with guarding the world from demonic influence. Mounted on dragonback, with the elder kin as his allies, Eledain finally defeated the demon. The beast was banished on a hill in the depths of the forest, but as his final act he cast a curse which he said would spread a sickness throughout the world and one day be its undoing.

Azrahel Koth was captured, but since his master had made him immortal, Eledain’s knights could not slay him no matter how hard they tried. Instead, he was imprisoned in a crypt under an island in a lake in a remote valley, guarded by warriors sentenced to remain at their posts until the end of their days.

Eledain founded a new empire, based on the worship of dragons and their cleansing fire. His realm expanded, cities were built, and paved roads spread through the wilderness. Soon the elder folk grew weary of humanity’s advance, and many left. The dwarves burrowed themselves into the mountain and built a new realm underground. In the autumn of his life, Eledain started to distrust
and fear the dragons who had carried him to victory against Sathmog. To secure his power, the dragon emperor sacrificed part of his soul to forge Um-Durman, a magical sword with the power to slay dragons and demons alike. Finally, the humans would be
free and independent of primeval beings. When Eledain eventually passed away the sword was hidden in a crypt, as the dragon
priests believed the weapon to be too dangerous to be used except in extreme emergencies. Opening the crypt required a special key: a statuette split into four pieces, one for each direction ruled by the dragon emperor.

After Eledain’s death, a power struggle broke out between his sons, and the empire took a tyrannical turn. All protests against
the dragon knights’ rule were severely punished and the realm was beset by strife. Finally, the dragons turned their backs on the empire, which collapsed shortly thereafter. Savage orcs invaded much of the region and many humans were forced into exile.

All that remained from Eledain’s reign were the fading words of monks and knights who continued to worship the Immaculate Flame. But legend has it that part of the dragon empire survived across the sea in the far east.

The Misty Vale was the where the Capital of the Dragon empire stood. The Immaculate Flame seeks the sword as does the those who wish to see Sathmog return.

Browyn listened to the entire tale without saying anything. He looked at Elaria wondering if this was her objective after all—to gather the statue and use it to obtain Um-Durman. Was she somehow related to the Dragon Empire? These stories mean that this kind of powerful artefact is no good in anyone's hands. Something leads to something, and ultimately, good intentions don't remain good for a long time. The road to greater good is paved by miniscule acts of controlled evil. Whatever it seems, Um-Durman, if it comes out and falls into the wrong person's hand, will be a disaster. Even if it fell into someone's good hands, it might have too much power to corrupt it's protector. Wouldn't it be better to let it stay hidden as it is? But, it is too late to voice any opinion. He had already pledged his service to Elaria and he can't go back on his word now. But this maid has yet to disclose the identity of their mysterious organisation. Someone should inquire about this.

Noticing that he was looking at Elaria while thinking all this, Browyn quickly shifted his gaze back.

"We can't have demons in charge," Felskrudd nods in agreement. "It bites into the profit margins. So what makes you the more responsible buyer... should we find the sword."
Mar 12, 2024 12:30 am
Lothar leans against the wall and listens, trying not to doze through the monologue. It's all a bit for show, of course, and he's actually listening attentively and many elements of the tale catch his attention.

"So let's get this straight. This magical sword, the Duran Duran... it's hidden in a crypt, yeah? Is that the very same crypt where, what's-his-name, Azrael Goth, is still imprisoned? You know, in the remote valley. 'Neath the island in the lake. Guarded by the immortal warriors."

Glancing at Kris, the man lifts an eyebrow and lowers his voice conspiratorially. "Sounds like child's play."

Before the not-really-a-barmaid can answer, Lothar pushes himself off the wall and hones the point of Silvergrin's question, adding, "And who is it you work for then, if not the dragons? Or the demons. Or the orcs. Or the goblins. This fuckin' valley's full of bad actors, innit?"

No, no it is not in where he is. I believe that the sword is here in Outskirt in the ruins it it built on. The sword is believed to have the power to get to the island he is on and actually kill him.

As for me I work for the seekers of truth. Our interest in the sword is that we are seeing the demon's minions increasing. So much that even the orcs are afraid and even leaving the valley. So if things do not change he maybe able to release himself from the prison.

That is why I am looking for adventurers like yourself to find the pieces of the statue so that he may be destroyed or at least kept from using the sword to break free.

Lothar has never gotten the full story from the other lady, the one who lost her friend -- Elaria. So he looks at Krisanna, and at Silvergrin and Silentstep before he speaks up. Was this the same stuff Elaria was after? Was she at odds with this lady and her Seekers of Truth?

"How many pieces did you say? Four? And do you know where they are? And, ah, how much they are all worth to you?"
Mar 20, 2024 4:40 am
It is hard to put a value on them as they could be what saves or ruins the Misty Vale and the surrounding area. If the wrong people get their hands on them they could bring another reign of Demons upon the land or if used correctly rid the world of a great evil.

Yes we have learned there are four pieces. We are trying to find the locations of the pieces but it seemed that they were hidden well. Three of the pieces are believed to be in the Misty Vale as it was divided among his four descendants.Three are believed to die in the Vale itself which is why we believe that they still remain in the vale. The fourth piece it is believed left with one of his descendants. We think it is is in the what remains of the Dragon empire. We have people trying to find the descendants and see if they know where the fourth piece is.

You notice Elaria is deep in thought. It looks likes she is about to say something or ask a question but each time stops and keeps her peace.
Mar 20, 2024 10:46 am
Krisanna makes a mental note of Elaria's body language, but reserves questions and comments for later. "Assuming all of this is true, and such a Doomsday weapon exists and can potentially be found. Why should we trust that you are who you say you are? We are strangers in this strange land, and would seem easy marks for someone, or someones, of bad intent to lure us with honeyed words and/or the promise of gold to do their dirty work." She casts her eyes around the room, looking at her companions. "I don't mean to be rude, but rough experience has taught me that the more valuable something is, the greater the lengths - and depths - to which people are willing to go to get it. Trust in the gods, but don't forget to tie up your horse, and all that."

I understand. It goes both ways I guess. That is why I explained so much. I was originally thinking of just giving you some information about a place that would be worth investigating but I hope to be a good judge of character.

So how about this. As you spend time here, find out if what I said is true. I will also give you any leads I have about the statue and other places to explore. If my words match what I tell you , you will know I can be trusted.

On the other hand what I hear about you and how well you do on your explorations will let me see your character and if I should continueto help you.

Nodding, Krisanna offers a genuine smiles and says, "Fair enough, and a fairer deal then I've had on many an occasion. I can work with that." She leans back against the nearest wall and crosses her arms, the day's (and evening's) fatigue catching up with her, but doing her best to soldier on and stay alert.

"And just to return to my burly companion's query - what are we talking about in terms of compensation? Not that the reward of doing good isn't enough in and of itself for such a stalwart crew...," she pauses momentarily and gestures at the assembled group. "But food, lodging, supplies, time and effort... you know. And aside from said statue bits and sword, what of any spoils or other stuffs we might collect during our investigations? Just so's we're all same paging here," she concludes, stifling an urge to yawn but not totally succeeding.
Mar 21, 2024 4:34 pm
We do not have much to offer in compensation as what money we do get goes mostly into research. Anything you collect in result of us giving you leads will be your. I believe we can afford giving you lodging here for free but that is all I can offer at this time.

Lothar isn't quite sure what to make of all this, but the idea of being given leads to check out... leads to ancient, treasure-packed crypts and towers and dungeons -- the woman has his attention.

"You have maps and such, do you?" the man asks, making eye contact with Krisanna, Browyn and Felskrudd, giving them a let's do this look.

When they have the key, or pieces of it -- then they'd be in a position to negotiate further payment...

I can tell you that this side of the Iron Forest there's an unholy place with huge stones rising into the sky. Riddermound it's called, named after the dark knight who was chained by the gods when the world was young. They say he was buried alive in that mound, along with his family, his servant, and his riches.

It can be found to the west and slightly north
of outskirt

"Sounds dangerous," Felskrudd says. "And how many foolhardy adventurers has gone there before. Chances are they all died or the place is already picked clean. But I guess it warrants a journey to check."
Mar 26, 2024 2:15 am
That I cannot answer but I can say the Misty Vale is ripe for exploration, it is also unfortunately a very dangerous place still.
Mar 26, 2024 2:17 am
You see Elaria pull out her maps and looks at it , puts it away and says, I think I can find it on the map I have. It doesn't look to far away.
